1 out of 5 stars If you move in between the two areas, forget it.......2001-12-11

Nothing about the San Mateo area, which is dead center of the SF bay/peninsula area. The title should be "Relocating to the city of San Francisco and/or Palo Alto". The yellow pages were more helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Only worthwhile if you're single and moving to San Fran.......2001-09-28

This book has a lot of info about the San Fran area, not as much about the Silicon Valley areas around it and it is not meant for anybody with a family that wants to relocate there -- more of a single person who is moving out there for first time. Gives a brief history of info of the counties around San Fran esp the East Bay, like Santa Clara County but not much of the others and may be slowly outdated by now.

4 out of 5 stars Great book & the only one I could find to help me, but.......2000-05-10

I wish the format was a little different. The book breaks everything down by districts & neighborhoods only, which I realize is very important, but provides little overall info. Apart from this minor flaw, I am really glad I have this book. I could have moved to SF without this book, but it sure helps to have some sort of guide.

    3 out of 5 stars Great...if you're heading to San Francisco.......1999-12-25

I was looking for more information about Silicon Valley towns -- San Francisco was treated with so much detail (in terms of breaking down the neighborhoods and really detailing things to do in the city) it wasn't funny. Silicon Valley towns seemed to have just basic demographic information (and I only wish the rent prices quoted were that low today!)

    2 out of 5 stars A Great Incomplete Reference.......1999-11-24

If you are single and you are looking for a job and an apartment in San Fran. or San Jose area this book is great for you. If you are married and own a home and you are thinking about moving to the area, this book is a little value. Spend 5 minutes reviewing it in the store and don't buy it.

Did not cover the east bay at all. Did not give any helpful information about the real estate market. Did not list churches in the area.

3 out of 5 stars A good book for beginners and advanced aquarists alike.......1999-05-07

This is an anthology of articles in ADI, Tetra's German magazine. The different groups of catfishes and loaches are identified and given a broad treatment. Most groups are represented, including rarer ones like doradids, hillstream loaches, and pelagic catfishes. Includes articles on spawning clown loaches, corydoras pygmaeus, ancistrus dolichopterus, hoplosternum sp., and hypostomus punctatus. The book "Hobbyist Guide to Catfish and Loaches" is an expanded version of this book, and is easier to find, as "the Bottom Dwellers" is out of print.

This book has a lot of good pictures and information on my favorite fish Loaches! Also it has soe great info on catfish. One of my favorite fish books.

Hundreds of Roycroft items are illustrated that have recently been sold on the auction block, and all prices realized are given. He is also the author of Lee Middleton Original Dolls Price Guide, published by Hobby House Press, and Annalee Mobilitee Dolls Price Guide, for Portfolio Press. Book Description

As the founding of the Roycroft art community in New York State reaches its one hundredth anniversary this year, collector interest in the Arts & Crafts-style items that were made there is stronger than ever before. Of particular interest are the beautiful and varied hammered copper ware the "Roycrofters" made. This second volume provides nearly two hundred color photographs of copper vases, bookends, trays, and more-including many rarely-seen items. The history of the group and the evolution of its art metal are discussed, along with criteria for evaluating the quality of individual pieces. The different marks and patinas used by the company are documented. of further interest is a discussion of the Tookay Shop and Avon Coppersmith, both spin-offs from the Roycroft community, which continued in a similar tradition. A price guide is included.

            Book Description

In recent years, collectors have come to recognize the beauty and value of Roycroft items, particularly the art metal which is the most available, affordable, and varied of all Roycroft collectibles. Influenced by the English movement that was spearheaded by William Morris, Elbert Hubbard began a new industry dedicated to quality of design and manufacture, from its factories near Buffalo, New York. With 179 full color illustrations, this identification and price guide offers Arts and Crafts collectors and dealers an in-depth look at the many objects that were made. Included are bowls, vases, jewelry, desk items, bookends, candlesticks and other items of interest. The text provides the history and background of the company, as well as information about each of the products illustrated. There is also a good selection of original advertising and promotional material.

                          Book Description

John Lahr is one of the most celebrated critics of the performing arts. Winner of Britain's 1992 Roger Machell Award for the best writing about public performance, Dame Edna Everage and the Rise of Western Civilisation is an insider's account of a great clown and a great act. It takes us backstage at London's Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, with Barry Humphries, and into the weird and wonderful world of his show-stopping creation--Dame Edna Everage.
Humphries is a prodigious comic talent. His copresence in Edna-- a character so real to the public that her autobiography, My Gorgeous Life, appeared on the nonfiction list--actively invites speculation about reality and fantasy, male and female. With her "natural wisteria" hair and her harlequin eyeglasses, Dame Edna was the first solo performer to sell out the most famous theater in England, and she also took the United States by storm, filling theaters from coast to coast. Hilarious and malign, polite and rude, highbrow and very low, the character Barry Humphries inhabits is a bundle of contradictions.
John Lahr, the son of another comic genius, takes us behind the scenes to investigate how a provincial dandy from Melbourne transformed himself into one of the most unlikely megastars of today. In showing the connection between Humphries's comedy and the life it parodies, Dame Edna Everage and the Rise of Western Civilisation goes beyond reportage to an exploration of the nature of comedy, a subject that Lahr has pursued over the years in his acclaimed biographies of Bert Lahr, Noël Coward, and Joe Orton. Richly entertaining and engagingly written, this book is an anecdotal treatise on the nature of comedy and an absorbing inquiry into what makes us laugh.

Barry Humphries is a genius. No book is ever going to do justice to seeing him perform live, but John Lahr has come close. If you're a Dame Edna fan, you don't want to miss this book.

Beyond creating an indelible character, Humphries is a master improv comedian. In November 2003, I saw 'Dame Edna' live at a Dallas, Texas appearance. (S)he balanced five or six active storylines that were conjured up in conversations with various audience members. How the evening went totally depended on what Edna pulled out of those people. The results had the audience rolling in laughter and shocked at how much wonderful material could get mined out of what didn't appear to be much to work with.

If I had 10% of Barry Humphries talent, I would be very happy.

Put the words "Barry Humphries: Living National Treasure" before the title above this review and you will have my full intended heading. Thank you.

For anyone who is a fan of Humphries and his characters this book provides a detailed insight into the creative force and intellect that has produced the best comedy theatre in the world.

For any of the new American fans of Dame Edna, this book may go some way towards filling in what you have been missing out on since Edna Everage made her quiet and unassuming debut in Australia nearly 50 years ago.

Humphries' heavy touring schedule in the US is your gain, and our loss. If you haven't seen the show, do whatever it takes to see this man and his characters on stage. I have never seen theatre which could have an entire audience bent over in laughter, tears pouring down their faces, at the mere sight of a character walking across the stage - Sir Les Patterson - and then reduced to total silence, shedding noiseless tears as Sandy Stone quietly mourned the loss of a treasured lemon tree.

This book has opened my eyes to so many other reasons why we find Barry Humphries' characters funny. It is as incisive an examination of the man and the art as one could hope to find.

Written toward the turn of the nineteenth century by Frances Willard, the founder of the WCTU (Women's Christian Temperance Union) and well-known suffragette, A Wheel Within a Wheel offers lively insight into the mind of an independent woman who also reflected the temper of her times. Brave enough to take up bicycle riding when she was fifty-three years old, Willard reported that her bicycling costume "consisted of a skirt and blouse of tweed, with belt, rolling collar, and loose cravat, the skirt three inches from the ground; a round straw hat, and walking-shoes with gaiters. It was a simple, modest suit, to which no person of common sense could take exception."

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Age of the Bicycle.......2006-10-26

In Europe and the United States there was a brief period that roughly spanned the 1890s. During that period, people of all ages began abandoning one troublesome, expensive and polluting form of tranportation, the horse, without adopting the automobile, which was at least as troublesome, expensive and polluting. That was the Golden Age of the Bicycle. If I were given the power to rewrite history, I'd be tempted to delay the invention of the car long enough, perhaps twenty years, to give our cities, our neighborhoods and our societies a chance to establish themselves around the bicycle, before I would allow the automobile to come along.

Unfortunately, I can't do that. But I can recommend books from this golden age to bicycle lovers so they can get a glimpse of what might have been. This book, Wheel Within a Wheel is one. But be sure to check out Around the World on a Bicycle, the story of the first person to circle the world on a bicycle, as well as Across Asia on a Bicycle, which describes the Asian leg of the second circumnavigation of the world by bicycle and the first using the modern 'safety' bike.

The language is tedious and trying - old fashioned and trite. And the topic is boring. Other than that, not a great little book but for some interest in women's issues.

                            5 out of 5 stars A true gem.......2000-02-21

Frances Willard was a hardy, clear-spoken New England Temperance/Suffrage activist of the late 19th century. Until age 16, she had free run of the world, but then was bound by the corsets and hoops and restrictions of womanhood. That is, until she turned 53 and received the gift of "a wheel" -- a safety bicycle -- from a friend in the movement. Her reflections on riding the bicycle are amusing and profound. It was very much a community effort for her; she describes one lesson in which four friends stand at the corners (including one at each side of the handlebars, counterbalancing them) and walk her down the drive. BUT this book is ultimately more about life than it is about cycling. It is like a journal of all the insights sparked by this return to the unfettered freedom of Willard's youth. And for that, it is precious and challenging. The language reminded me of Mark Twain's dry observations on his own habits and predilections, and Willard is certainly his equal in exercising her powers of observation and analysis. Ultimately she reflects a universal experience: the experience of flight on two wheels that attracts so many of us to the sport and discipline of the bicycle.

New edition: revised and with new introduction by the author! Winner of the inaugural Prometheus Award for Libertarian fiction in 1979.

Canny old Pete Paxton thinks there's a monstrous conspiracy brewing that threatens the LaNague Charter and the freedoms it guarantees for Federation planets. The only way to head it off is to enlist the aid of Josephine "Jo" Finch, the current CEO of Interstellar Business Advisors, a firm Pete co-founded with Jo's grandfather more than half-a-century before. Jo mistrusts Pete and suspects he may beresponsible for the bizarre death of her father that left her orphaned at age ten. But she is soon convinced that the old man's fears are more than justified.

Jo and Pete are soon matching wits with one of the shrewdest, most devious politicos in the Federation, threatened by a ruthless psi-talent whose victims face a fate far worse than mere death. They must also deal with the Vanek - the gentle, enigmatic inhabitants of the planet Jebinose who, against all logic, claim to have murdered Jo's father.

I picked up a copy of this book at the library. It has an excellent plot. Well written and fast moving. I highly recommend this novel and all of Wilson's Lanague Confederation books.

                                5 out of 5 stars Kirsten's review.......2001-12-20

The autobiography of Dervla Murphy's first 30 years was given to my mother in 1981. I picked it up from the bookshelf and read it, inheriting it after my mother's death in 1982. Along with "Jules and Jim" by Henri-Pierre Roche, it has endured as one of my most treasured possessions. Dervla's philosophy of life and her witty, accurate observations are infused always with primitive, glowing truth, and beautifully expressed. I sometimes find myself spontaneously recalling certain phrases from the book when the occasion elicits it. I have been inspired by this book for my whole adult life, and I wish I knew her personally. I really respond to her concept of life. If you're a thoughtful, aware reader you'll probably feel the same way.

                                5 out of 5 stars A truly unusual person!.......2001-12-03

I loved this book. Dervla Murphy had a very unusual childhood, but through it all the burning desire to travel and to write carried her on. She succeded spectacularly in both and her adventures shared with us in books are treasures. This book gives some insight to the circumstances that shaped her life. That she prevailed over such difficult times is a tribute to her spirit. That she found peace and love is a joy.

                                5 out of 5 stars Compelling reading!.......2000-05-20

I loved this book. I got addicted to Dervla Murphy books a few years ago and find her travels around the world fascinating. She is clearly an unconventional person and this book gives the details of her unconventional childhood. She was an only child with a crippled mother. She left school early to help look after her. As a child she loved reading and made her decision to cycle to India from Ireland at a very young age. In this book she is brutally honest, from her childhood daydreams of the teddy bear tree to her alcoholism as an adult. I felt I understood this amazing women better having read this book and I would recommend it to anybody as a great and emotional read.

I found that this book gives an excellent and readable overview of the Medicine Wheel and the construction and use of them. It tends to not give details on historical details of specific ones, but rather generalalities. It is full of good information though.
