Only guide that does DC art galleries.......2005-01-01

The current Timeout 2004 guide for Washington, DC has really good coverage of DC art galleries; in fact it is the only DC guide that offers any decent "guiding" to Washington area galleries.

It is written by Jessica Dawson, who also pens the "Galleries" column for the Washington Post.

She has a good introduction and even lists her favorites for 2004 under "Names of the Game."

Jessica nails it when she recognizes in her intro that a new "optimism" is kindling a really good art scene in the Washington, DC region.

Unfortunately, throughout the pages dedicated to the galleries, and as it is to be expected, there are quite a few comparisons to New York this, New York that all over the place.

And reading through Jessica's descriptions of the various galleries also offers an honest and rare insight as to how this critic evaluates and views (she seems to have something about "safe art," whatever that is) most of the Greater Washington, DC region's art galleries. For example Dawson praises Zenith Gallery's Margery Goldberg for her "tireless activism," but describes the gallery as "while influential in the neon art scene, consistently shows mediocre painting and craft."

Addison/Ripley is praised for selling "high-calibre paintings, photography and prints," but "their selections, while lovely, are awfully safe."

Cheryl Numark is "Washington's power dealer", while Leigh Conner shows work by the "kind of cutting-edge artists that Washingtonians usually travel to New York to see."

MOCA is "DC's answer to the hip, alternative galleries of New York."

Fraser Gallery (which I co-own) "concentrates on photography, but occasionally shows innovative sculpture and work in other media," while our Bethesda outpost is a "bright, glass-walled gallery [that] exhibits realist painting and photography."

Hemphill Fine Arts "plays host to many of Washington's strongest artists," but "the art here tends towards the decorative."

Fusebox is "sharp and savvy," and has "raised the bar for visual art in Washington," and their openings are "events to see and be seen at."

Accurate, informative, and very helpful.......2002-01-14

I just moved to DC, and I was really lost here until I picked up this thing. The reviewers selected great activities, restaurants, places, etc. Each one I have tried has been worth my time, if not really outstanding. I've asked long-time locals about some of the highly recommended but low-profile places, and they have agreed that those are hot spots. The maps are very nice, and the style is extremely readable. If you need one guide to the city, this is as good a choice as any.

Get Ready To Become Very Interested In Proof Coins!!!.......2005-04-18

You are about to enter into a covenant with a devil: The Ultimate Cameo Proof Coin. After you have begun to read this book, which will initially picque your interest only because it is so beautifully made, you will fall hopelessly, madly in love with the United States Mint Proof Coin! Yes, even though you don't like them or even know much if anything about them, the author of this book is going to take you on such a journey through the various proof coins of the 1950 to 1970 era that you are going to go out shortly after reading this book to seek out some nice proof coins, really. I can't exactly tell you why I know this but trust me on it, you will. I think it is partly because the author describes in such loving detail, date by date, denomination by denomination, what it is about a particular strike that makes one wish to own it, or at least to find it. I think it is also partly because the author has done such a fine job of photographing the various stages of proof that one can literally use this book as a photograde comparison guide....alas, I did to mine and now know that I don't presently own any ultra-heavy cameo proofs, BUT I WILL....believe me, I will. This is a definite addition to the coin reference library.

A wonderful collection tales of the ladies of the Emerald Island from folklore and history. This is a great book to pick up and read a little bit at the time since each woman is written in a short story form.
Those who want to enrich their learning of the women, whether real or imagined,who contributed to the building of the Irish culture will find this a fascinating read.

Spunky Irish Lassies.......2007-04-10

I loved the book. Most all the women in the book show the Irish spunk. I also learned a bit of the history of Ireland. The history is a bit bloody but Im greatful that the author did not go into great detail with it. It also gave me a little understanding about their war. I would recommend this book to anyone, even the young. I am of Irish decent myself and love learning about where my ancestors came from.

Contained within the pages of this book are the stories of thirteen legends of Irish history, all of them women. Each story comes to life, making the characters seem like real people, which of course they were.
Folsom's book takes us from early Irish history through events in the twentieth century, providing us with a look at many of the major events that took place on the island during those years- wars, revolutions, invasions, betrayals.
Not all the women are admirable in the deeds they performed, often being the cause of wars and great suffering. The sheer magnitude of lives lost during all these battles is astounding, whether they were full fledged wars or warfare between rival kings and chieftains. In those days women apparently were resigned to having their husbands and sons slaughtered.
What comes out of this book is the resiliency some of these women possessed, along with bravery in the face of insurmountable odds. Others were willing to defy societal norms to accomplish what they felt strongly about.
I absolutely loved this book. One of the best things about it is that you can read it a chapter at a time, and not feel like you have to read it straight through and lose track of what was going on. I would recommend having tissues nearby, for some of the stories are very sad.
It certainly cleared up misconceptions I had about Irish history, just hearing bits and pieces over the years. It isn't just a history lesson, however. It is a study of character, both good and evil.
I, for one, would certainly like to see a sequel.
