Cheap Sleeps in Paris (Cheap Sleeps)

Amazon.com
With more than 20,000 cafes, bistros, brasseries, and restaurants, Paris can intimidate the average hungry traveler. After all, in Paris of all places "...you don't want to waste time and money on a mediocre meal when you could be eating magnificently and paying less just around the corner." In the 1998 edition of Cheap Eats in Paris, you will find more than 200 listings, running the gamut from tearooms and wine bars to macrobiotic restaurants and boulangeries, and even nonsmoking establishments.
Author Sandra Gustafson shares with us her secrets for eating well on a budget: order the set menu (formule) or the plat du jour à la carte, house wine (vin de la maison), and tap water (l'eau ordinaire). Or, cut expensive corners by seeking out fast food à la Française (le snack). Included is a list of unacceptable activities that will indubitably offend Parisian wait staff, such as ordering only drinks from a table with a cloth or place mat (they are reserved for patrons ordering food), drinking coffee with a meal, and asking waiters for a doggie bag or to split a dish. A substantial glossary of food terms and menu items is a thoughtful addition.
Listings are arranged by arrondissement and provide information on hours, reservations, credit card usage, special menus, availability of English, and nearest metro stops. Gustafson's ample depictions evoke lush images of décor, ambiance, and, of course, cuisine that is nothing short of magnifique, ensuring that your next meal in Paris will be exactly what you were hoping for. --Jhana Bach
Customer Reviews:
Great Book but Outdated.......2006-03-23
Back in the late '90's & early 2000's this book was the best of its kind & rated 5 stars then. Our favorite restaurant of all time "A La Biche au Bois" & our 2nd favorite "Le Petit St. Benoit" were found here & both are still in business. But copyright 1998 (meaning the data was probably gathered in 1997) makes it oudated. What drives this home is that the menu prices are given in French francs.
Personal message to Sandra: We need you back in Paris updating your book!!!
it stinks.......2003-09-20
I didn't remember reading this book three years ago until my partner bought a copy. Naturally a restaurant book written several years ago will be somewhat out of date, but this one is laughably out of date. When I tried to find a restaurant in 2000, I was usually disappointed, because it wasn't there. Now even fewer can be found in Zagat's Survey. It was hard to locate them with the maps, because of numerous errors. Not only will you be horribly served by this book, you will waste a lot of time.
Personal recommendations.......2001-05-31
I've taken this book with me on 2 trips to Paris, & enjoyed every recommendation that we followed from the book. (Actually had to buy the book twice since first copy was lost by a friend on their trip to Paris). It gives you a pretty good description of the environment/background of the restaurant, selects several good dishes worth trying, & lets you know if there's a prix fixe menu. It may be time for an update, but if you want to stay in a budget, you won't find a better guide for eating in Paris unless you have friends that live there.
Seems outdated.......2000-06-07
We have been living in Paris for the last 4 months and have tried to use this book with varied success. We have found may of the entries outdated. In fact the first two restaurants we tried to find no longer exist. Many of the "Eats" are by no means cheap (Paris is expensive anyway). There are lots of cheaper ways to eat well in Paris. We have had about the same luck trying places that look interesting.
Wasted money.......2000-04-26
We bought this book in the hopes of finding good cheap restaurants in Paris. Not so. This book was completely useless. The phone numbers of many of the restaurants are inaccurate, and some of the restaurants do not even exist anymore. Each time we tried to use this book to find a place to eat, we came up empty handed. In fact, we found some wonderful places just by walking around. I certainly would not recommmed spending your money on this book.

Must Have for any Traveler to Paris.......1998-11-06
This book is filled with vivid descriptions of many of Paris' less expensive hotels. Sandra includes some pricier gems as well for those who can afford to splurge. But she avoids the chain hotels that don't offer the character of the smaller Parisian hotels. She describes the accomodations accurately including furnishings, lighting and room size. Many times she recommends specific rooms along with their canopy beds or terrific views! She warns you when there may be street noise and includes the nearest metro stops.
After I read this book I felt as though I knew many of the owners of the small hotels. When I finally got to Paris I saw that she had hit the nail right on the head with the hotel that I finally chose. Thank you!

What a great way to stay in Paris --
at small hotels with small prices.
Thanks to Cheap Sleeps I found an 11-room gem in the elegant 7th arrondissement,
within walking distance of the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and Musee D'Orsay for
$65/night (single). My room even had its own rooftop terrace to better view
la vie Parisienne. I look forward to a return visit, and to the next edition of this book.
Merci beaucoup, Sandra!

Book Description
This teachers' guide is designed to accompany Oxford's Pages from History series and begins with the assumption that the students who will be using one of the volumes in the series have had little or no experience working with primary sources. In addition to looking at such things as what a primary source is and the results of teaching with them, this teacher's guide also includes sample lessons.

Insightful commentaries and nostalgic reminisces.......2002-05-10
Uncommon Friends: Celebrating The Human-Animal Bond is a gentle memoir of the love shared between an animal lover and her four-legged canine and feline friends. In Uncommon Friends, Julie Adams Church reflects both on the joy of living pets and the memory of loved animals passed on. The result of these insightful commentaries and nostalgic reminisces is a moving, compelling testimony that will strike a kindred reflection in fellow animal lovers.

A lot of information in a small book........1998-08-16
Dianna Miller's book is brimming with information. As a novice I am somewhat intimidated, but the more I read, the more I learn. This book will remain on my shelf for many years.
Book Description
Bob Cooley was the Chicago Mafia’s fixer of court cases. During the 1970s and ‘80s, Cooley bribed judges, juries, and cops to keep his Mob clients out of jail. Paid handsomely for his services, he lived fast and enjoyed the protection of the men he served. Yet, by the end of the ‘90s, without a pending conviction, he became the star witness in nine federal trials that took down the most powerful Mafia family in the history of organized crime. When Corruption Was King is the story of a Mob lawyer turned mole with a million-dollar contract on his head who went back and forth between sin and sainthood—a turbulent youth, a stint on Chicago’s police force, law school, and then the inner sanctum of Chicago’s wiseguys. He dined with Mob bosses and shared “last suppers” with friends before their gangland executions. In a startling act of conscience, Cooley walked into the office of the U.S. Organized Crime Strike Force and agreed to wear a wire on the very same Mafia overlords who had made him a player. This book, including eight pages of memorable photographs, reveals the personal story behind the federal government’s most successful Mafia investigation.
Customer Reviews:
A Blast.......2007-05-05
Having lived in Chicago for years I relished this book. Reading it was like sitting in a dive bar and listening to the outrageous, hilarious, and probably sociopathic Sout' Side guy next to you tell tales of Windy City corruption so depraved you know they've got to be true.
An Ugly Business: Naming Names.......2007-04-16
Robert Cooley was a former cop who studied law and became one of the top hustlers in the Criminal Courts Building. After years of fixing cases for the mob dominated First Ward Democratic Organization, Cooley turned informant and helped the United States Attorney for the Northeastern District of Illinois indict and convict a variety of political hoodlums.
The negative publicity from the resulting scandal was so great that when the City Council proposed a redistricting map the former First Ward was eliminated and renumbered out of existence. The newly drawn First Ward no longer includes the downtown business district.
Sadly, the book documents how the leading members of the city's legal profession and political establishment have tolerated widespread corruption and facilitated its longevity through bribing members of the local judiciary. Even murder cases could be fixed for a price.
Cooley is not a hero or a saint and at times his claimed contrition seems somewhat false and selfserving. It does seem that he discovered some dregs of conscience about the same time he was about to be dropped by the leaders of the Outfit. Whether or not he was to be frozen out of the action or found dead in the trunk of an abandoned car is for the reader to decide. Cooley is now in the Federal Witness Protection Program.
Local law enforcement and a series of elected Cook County State's Attorneys abandoned any pretense of prosecuting organized crime and political corruption decades ago. No meaningful prosecutions have occurred without the participation of the US Attorney. On many occasions, the power elite have succeeded in placing players in the Federal Prosecutor's office as well.
What is particularly disturbing to many Chicagoans, even after repeated Federal prosecutions over the past quarter of a century, is the knowledge that many crooked political officeholders and judges remain in office having escaped the net. Some of the former Federal prosecutors who worked on the Operation Gambat (short for "gambling attorney" a code name that recognized Cooley's habitual gambling) cases are now in private practice defending the criminal suspects who are the successors to those that they formerly indicted and convicted.
Poor account of Chicago's bad.......2006-11-14
This is a poorly wriiten account of one turncoat in the world of Chicago crime. Nothing new here and for the most part it is a boring story that I could not finish.
What's Next?.......2006-07-04
This is a great story of the past.We would like to know what the current situation is in Chicago? Who's in charge? Who is the new Pat Marcy? Will There be a Sequel?
How Chicago Works.......2006-06-12
This book brings you through the life of lawyor Bob Cooley and how he got involved in the Chicago 'Outfit'. Coming from Chicago myself I was engulfed in the stories he told of his childhood and even his adult life partying and living the dream life in downtown Chicago. Coming from a working class family Cooley still managed to attend Catholic high school and college. Working his way through law school as a cop he learned a lot of the ways the police worked. It was when he became a lawyor that he really got involved in fixing cases for the mob and gambling heavily. Soon enough he was in too deep to find any other way out but the feds. The stories Cooley experienced in his adult life were truly remarkable and definitely worth reading. From martial arts experts to hanging out with Sinatra at famous clubs, Cooley really lived an amazing life during most of his adulthood.

Customer Reviews:
No wonder it's shrinkwrapped!!!.......2003-11-15
I've read some very eloquent and inteligent reviews on this book, especially from that Savala fellow. I don't have the same analytical skill, but what I do know is that this book made me embarrassed to be a "die-hard U2 fan" and it gives the rest of the world a silly view of how rediculous a U2 fan can be. Is this woman really a fan? Or does she simply have a school girl infatuation with Bono? There's no depth, no heart, not even a glimpse of how the greatest band on Earth relates to the world around her. It's all about her. Just her and her stalking sessions of U2 band members. Get a life, lady. It's cool that a fan can write a book about U2 and get it published, but at least write a good one for pete's sake. This book doesn't do U2 justice and it doesn't do the real fans any justice.
Great book!.......2003-06-22
Great book! Anyone who's been to even one U2 concert will recognize the spirit and passion described so well by Ms. Beeaff. And anyone who has had the pleasure and privilege of 'meeting' any of the band--as I have on rare occasions--will find the same openhearted good nature and authenticity found in Beeaff's accounts. And for those who haven't done either, it's all here. Well written, forthright and informative. Buy it!
Save your money.......2003-06-12
Where to begin? Well, in short, the author seems a bit out of touch with reality & I honestly have a really hard time believing many of her stories. The silliest one being that she & her groupie friends had given some flowers to one of the band's road crew to pass along. A month or so later, her friend just happens to run into Bono & asks if he got them. "Those were from you"? he says. With all the things bands go through on the road, city after city turning into a blur, not to mention the loads of flowers they receive, this little tale just doesn't seem likely.
The reports of the band's wardrobe for each show get old *very* quickly, as did what the author and her friends ate for dinner each night and where they ate it! She mentions over and over again that her favorite song is "Bad" and each performance the Edge gives is "the best one she's ever seen!"
Sorry, but this book really isn't worth the money.
Diary of a mad woman!.......2002-10-17
Your money can be spent better on more insightful U2 books. In this book the author does an excellent job of keeping detailed records of her journeys and the little "run-in's" with the band.(Or as I like to call them "stalking sessions") She also does an excellent job of boring me. This book for me was the equivilant of sitting at my cousin's house watching an 6-hour slide show of his vacation to Delaware. I love U2 as much as the next fan but she goes a little overboard in the way she speaks of Bono. I don't care what Bono was wearing on March 9, 1992! Or what HER interpation of the music is. How about telling me what Bono thinks about his music, life, sports, religion etc..... Oh she can not do this because she is a physco fan. It almost makes me embarrased to call myself a die hard U2 fan.
Only a fan can do that!!!.......2002-01-03
What can I say? There's some great stuff written about U2. "A Grand Madness" is definitely one of them. And it's different. When I first read it I was in my second year of fandom - when the one thing I still hadn't experienced was seeing my favourite band in concert.
"A Grand Madness" took me on a journey ... not quite like witnessing U2 life, but the closest to this adventure I could get. And it wasn't only about the concerts. I felt like Dianne Beeaffs "life on the road" experiences could have been mine; they seemed to express my own engagement, my own dedication to this wonderful band, my own feelings about the music and the people behind, all the feelings that only a fan can have.
Now that I finally *have* seen U2 on tour (and found some great new friends along the way) I feel even more related to this extraordinary book than before. Because this is the best thing a fan can experience. A Grand Madness indeed.

A Look at U2.......2002-01-21
Carter Alan's Road to Pop takes an extensive look at U2's career from their infancy in Dublin to the recording of their first album, Boy, to their first tour of America through their last album at the time of the book's re-release, Pop. It is a fascinating look at a band who is never at a loss for words.
Not the *best* U2 book.........2001-08-25
Being a huge U2 fan, I read everything about them that I can get my hands on, but I gotta say I was kind of disappointed with this particular U2 book. It's mainly a collection of interview sound-bytes taken from other sources. If you want an awesome U2 book, go read U2 At the End of the World by Bill Flanagan. The Road to Pop is more of a general U2 history book, and lacks any kind of "insider" feel. If you follow the band at all, none of the stuff in this book will be news to you.
Carter Alan's journey through U2 and the Media.......2001-08-13
It is not often that a reader gets an in-depth look at one of the greatest bands in the world through the man responsible for introducing them in the United States. Carter Alan's book takes the reader through 17 years of relationships with the band. The book is based off various interviews and general views of the media towards U2 through out the years. This is a MUST-HAVE for all Carter Alan fans.
Worth Reading.......2000-03-24
The Road To Pop focuses on the early years of U2's touring in America from Boy to The Joshua Tree. The reports of U2's activities during this time are entertaining and insightful and Mr. Allens closeness with the band is clear. There are many behind the scenes antidotes and interviews with the band members which really allow their personalities to shine through. The problems begin with the Achtung Baby / Zoo Tv era. Mr. Allens alienation from the band at this time is obvious as the tone of the book changes from a warm first person account to a superficial and almost hostile account. This section of the book contains inexcusable factual inaccuracies, such as the claim that U2 accepted corporate sponsorship for the Zoo Tv tour, which calls into question the reporting throughout the book. Despite this, U2 fans will find the majority of the book about the early years very interesting and well worth the purchase price. Stop reading The Road To Pop at the end of chapter 16 and pick up the story with Bill Flanagans U2 - At The End Of The World.
Wonderful, Magnificant.......1999-04-23
I think this was just really wonderful to read I've read it about 3 times now and again it is wonderful. I think that if you like U2 you should read this. You should also take a look at Far Away So Close it too is wonderful.
