Great Guide for Touring Tallinn.......2007-08-24

It was out first trip to Tallinn so we needed to know everything. This little book provided the answers. We maximized our time in the city by reading about the recommended sights to see, how to get there, the costs, if any. Learning about the history of the city gave us an added appreciation of what we were viewing. We learned information about the language, the money exchange, the culture, the restaurants, the hotels, the accessibility of other cities and how to get there. Thanks to this information, we decided to take the Sea Cat to Helsinki for a day - tremendous! If you're going to Tallin, you need this book as your guide.

Dr Pitcairns natural health.......2007-10-05

This is absolutely a must book. Giving dogs prescribed medications often involves side affects which shorten their lives. Being able to find out about natural products that can help them is great. It can not only lenghten their lives, but also cost less in the long run. I highly reccomend this book to all dog owners.

great resource.......2007-10-01

this is a great resource book. It has lots of background info on dog foods and so much info on great supplements. It could be made easier with breakdowns or charts to guide you for quicker reference, because I find myself having to flip back and forth a lot. There is definitely lots of info and it has to be read more than once. I think the recipes are sound and easy to make. Although I can't cook for my dogs all the time, at least I can do it whenever they are ill or recovering from some ailment or surgery to ensure that their bodies are strong when they need to heal. This book makes it manageable to do that.

A great resource.......2007-09-23

This book is a great resource for pet owners. I find the health-care section of the book very useful. I have modified the recipes to accomodate the inherited allery issues my dog has. Modifying the recipes is a very involved process as the substituion of products recommended and appropriate amounts required for balanced nutrition can be a hassle to figure out, especially, if one's pet was allergic to multiple products.

This is a great book for pet owners who want to try homemade cooking and alternative medicine for their pets.

Excellent overall but diet not suited for all .......2007-09-01

There is more than one way to feed a healthy, non-commercial diet. I recommend buying both Dr. Pitcairn's book and Andi Brown's book, The Whole Piet Diet, to see which diet your animal(s) prefer. I have three pets, two 13-yr. old cats and one 1 1/2-yr old terrier. The cats had been eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some canned Friskies. The terrier was eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some raw meat, veggies, yogurt, etc. I recently learned that dry food is difficult for pets to digest and is terribly drying and causes digestive problems like vomiting, dandruff, etc. The Friskies is just plain junk food so I decided that I was going to feed healthier fare and bought both books (Dr. Pitcairn wrote the foreword in Andi's book). While Dr. Pitcairn promotes primarily raw meats with cooked whole grains, Andi Brown promotes cooked stews (grains included for dogs only, not cats). After experimentation, I found that my dog and one cat prefer Dr. Pitcairn's recipes and my second cat prefers Spot's Stew (from Andi's book). When I made the switch, I only started feeding the recipes without supplements to the cats. It took 15 days for them to eat consistently, then I started adding the supplements in small amounts and gradually built up to the daily recommended amounts. Tip: my cats preferred Andi's supplements over Dr. Pitcairn's (especially the essential fatty acids in the form of oils). All of my pets are doing very well on the diets but only because I was persistent in finding what worked best for each pet. I will never feed dry food again!

It's a shame..........2007-08-29

...that an obviously experienced and well researched vetrinarian would recommend a diet that includes grain as one of the staples of the diet. Anyone who does even a minor amount of research about the special diet needs of a dog would easily find that dogs do not possess the proper enzymes to break down grain properly and can lead to either minor or serious allergic reactions. Dogs should not eat any type of grain at any time. Anyone who reads this book, do not take it as gospel. Please do more in-depth research before you make any solid decisions on your dogs diet.

Besides that fault, there are only a few recipies included in this rather long book. I heard very good things about this book before I bought it and was thoroughly disappointed after I read it. Its hard to give this book anything else but a negative review.

This is the best cat care book i have ever read it really helped me with the deliver of my cats kittens and then the after care of them. It also halped me train my cat not to do cetain things like scratching the carpet and couch....you should get this if you have acat it really helps alot.......

This is a good book for basic information about cats, without getting too deep. The pictures are very nice, making it an easy read. I found myself reading it hungrily, but now need more substance. I'll probably try to give this book away now.

Manages to make bad girls boring.......2007-09-03

I could not make it past page 50. The part I did read was Dobie telling childhood tales of neglect and being misunderstood, ostensibly to explain what happened later in her life. This should have been more exciting than it ended up being.

The main problem I had was that the narrative just wasn't compelling. At no point in this book did I care about what happened next. Perhaps Dobie was pulling her punches and keeping things clean for the youth. Young girls thinking of becoming the neighborhood bicycle could benefit from this memoir, but in my experience, those girls don't usually read.

So, the book is a waste on all fronts. Avoid this one.

Too Shallow.......2007-05-22

My daughter read this and found it wonderful, so I gave it a shot. It's a short book, one you can finish in 3-4 hours. That, I feel, represents part of the problem. This book lacks depth. The periods of her life are isolated from each other and she fails to make the connections between her family life, her wantoness, the group sex, and her afterlife.

I'm not sure Dobie understnad the impact of her choosing to engage in sex with those boys in the care had on her adult life. Instead, the ending leaves one with a voyeuristic hangover similiar to watching The Jerry Springer Show.

Kind of disappointed..........2007-04-13

First off, let me commend Kathy Dobie for such an honest, unflinching account of a girlhood gone sadly and strangely awry. Her story of being a 14 year old searching for maturity through inappropriate sexual encounters, culminating in reluctantly "agreeing" to a gang bang, is truly heartbreaking. Unfortunately though, the parts of the book that don't deal with her sexual misadventures and statutory rape(s) fall short of being interesting or particularly informative. And for that reason this memoir feels very disjointed.

With the exception of the tease at the beginning of the book, the first half of the book tediously deals with Kathy's rather ordinary and ununique upbringing in a Catholic household as one of six children. Aside from her deep and unfulfilled desire to be closer to her mother and the fact that she has an older brother who is troubled and prone to running away, there is nothing about her childhood that could prepare her or the reader for the way she so drastically veers off course. All she offers is that at fourteen she makes the decision to lose her virginity and then does so with basically the first man (yes, man) she meets. The only explanation she really offers for her sudden transformation into the town slut is that she really wanted everyone to know her name and for her reputation to precede her. And precede her, it did. It isn't until Kathy delves into her sex life at fourteen that she is at her best and able to really explore what happened and what she was feeling at the time. This gripping, thought-provoking section culminates in the gand bang. Then Kathy spends a good deal of time discussing the aftermath, which is mildly interesting but not very illuminating. She can't adequately explain her feelings about what happened and seems to be moving through the story and time in a daze, which may have been how it felt at the time to the author, but doesn't help the reader come to terms with how Kathy managed to move on from the tragedy that befell her. Then the narrative abruptly shifts to her life today, twenty years later, and we're supposed to believe she has moved past the assault; she's healed. Yet she acknowledges her inability to commit to a man; her need to always live with other people, almost like she hasn't moved on from adolescence. Ultimately, I was left feeling very sad for Kathy the 14 year old who was the victim of such a sad Greek tragedy of her own immature making, and sorrier for Kathy the 38 year old who still seems scarred by it.

I really wanted to like this book so much more; wanted Kathy to delve so much deeper; but ultimately, I felt let down by the lack of resolution as well as the hurried ending.

Unlike many books I've come across.......2007-03-26

I was very much impressed with this book. The first thing that struck me was the description of her early life and family. It depicts (beyond accurately) the smells, sounds, cameraderie, and love present in the house of a large family.

When she got into the meat of her story, I was astounded at how honest she was willing to be with the rest of the world. She offered no apology for how she acted, only an acknowledgement that she acted that way. She did not profess undying hatred for the boys who raped her, but a description of why she loved being around them and why she was so heartbroken afterward.

Somehow, Dobie managed to capture the world from the eyes of a 14/15 year old, but to tell her story through the woman who has come to terms with her past. Excellent, and highly recommended.

Couldn't Put It Down.......2006-12-30

I highly recommend this book. Not having found a really great read in a while, I was more than surprised to find one here in this simple, ordinary looking book. She writes so beautifully and honestly that you almost feel like you know her. All her emotions become your own. Even though I've never been through much of what she writes about in my own life, I felt a strange, strong connection to Dobie and her story of adolescence. I couldn't put this one down. Enjoy!

coffee table book.......2005-12-04

This is an excellent coffee table book full of pictures, pictures and oh yeah...more pictures. That's just fine I suppose-but one reviewer made the comment that it's a "musical journey" thus prompting me to buy the book. However, I didn't find it to be that exactly. Its a cheap, thin paperback photo album with small text paragraphs. For it to be "a musical journey", I would want it to have more text and more insight. To me that makes it more personal. I can watch Rattle and Hum on video and get a bigger buzz than thumbing through this coffee table book. Buyer beware. Buy the DVD of Rattle and Hum instead if you actually want to take a musical journey.

"It's a musical journey...".......2001-03-26

"U2 : Rattle and Hum : The Official Book of the U2 Movie : A Journey into the Heartland of Two Americas" is something that every U2 collector should have on the shelf and a book that U2 fans and music aficionados in general will enjoy. The book chronicles the making of "Rattle and Hum" from the whys of making the film to the live finale at Sun Devil Stadium.

The book takes you behind the scenes of shooting the film, telling of the challenges of making a film unlike any other previous release. It also introduces you to the principle players, both in front of and behind the camera. It discusses the band's influences and gives the stories behind various scenes.

For people who could care less about the making of "Rattle and Hum" and just want to ogle the band, this book will give you plenty to drool over. There are quite a few photos from the shoots with Anton Corbijn, as well as live shots of U2, some which have been distributed widely on the internet, some which you will see for the first time in the book. All of the photos are very beautiful and make this book a great candidate for the coffee table (which is where one of my two copies is)...It's a musical journey." Indeed!
