4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Guide to Canada.......1998-02-06

A very good guide to Canada - last year ('97) I drove through middle and western Canada and this was the best of the three books I bought. Generally on-target descriptions and commentary of what's worth seeing and what's worth avoiding. More geared towards low and mid budgets.

              Book Description

For his general temperance, however, and self-control, Cato really deserves the highest admiration. For when he commanded the army, he never took for himself, and those that belonged to him, more than three bushels of wheat for a month, and somewhat less than a bushel and a half a day of barley for his baggage-cattle. And when he entered upon the government of Sardinia, where his predecessors had been used to require tents, bedding, and clothes upon the public account, and to charge the state heavily with the cost of provisions and entertainments for a great train of servants and friends, the difference he showed in his economy was something incredible.

This is a great book that gives a very brief history of Ohio and it's sights and symbols. It gives a page each of information on things like the state flower, bird, tree and flag and shows you how to draw them, step-by-step. The state seal, the Capitol, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Neil Armstrong Air and Space museum are also included. I used this in homeschooing activities for my 2nd grader and she learned a lot from it and had fun. The directions are easy to follow, and facts about each symbols are fun and easy to understand. Highly recommened!

I live on the acreage next to one of the authors. Our hearts were melted by this wonderful breed of dogs. We now have a rescued Harrier of our own or perhaps it would be more accurate to say she has us. I was very impressed with how straight forward and factual this book was written. If you want to know about Harrier's....history, breeding, showing, care and loving this is a great book for you.

5 out of 5 stars An End To My Confusion.......2004-11-29

I have solved many mysteries of Depression Era Glass patterns on unmarked pieces through the use of this wonderful, well documented guide. Although this guide presents a small insert of colored pictures the bulk of the pages provide "drawings" in black and white which are actually quite helpful in determining the pattern you are matching. In addition, pattern names, manufacturers and years of manufacturing are provided.

As a dealer I find the value guides helpful and they are separated by item category, color and value range. The author is honest enough in the introduction to advise you to depend on other references for value accuracy in the ever changing market, particularly with the advent of internet auctions. This book has been extremely helpful as a reference guide and is a welcome addition to my glassware book library.

4 out of 5 stars Values are clear, need more examples........2004-02-24

I found that the values were very helpful, but since mostly all that was shown pattern-wise was the plate, it was a bit difficult for me to identify some other pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book for Identification.......2003-11-05

As a new collector of depression era glass, I found this book to be incredibly helpful with identification. The line drawings are clear - the reader has no doubt of the pattern (sometimes photos can be unclear due to the nature of glass). I also appreciate the value ranges given and, of special value to me, each pattern has info on what pieces have been reproduced or reissued.

5 out of 5 stars A variety of patterns from the era in unmistakable relief.......2002-06-06

Now in an expanded and fully updated fourth edition, Depression Era Glassware Identification And Value Guide, glassware specialist Carl F. Luckey is a straightforward guide enabling the reader to competently and confidently recognize and fairly price classic works of 1930s glassware artifacts. While most of the glassware illustrations are in simple black and white, Depression Era Glassware is impressively enhanced with an insert section of superb color photography, all combine to present a variety of patterns from the era in unmistakable relief. The price guide is extensive and lists price ranges for individual pieces of varying sizes. Depression Era Glassware is an excellent, indispensable, authoritative resource for dealers and collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Line drawings to end my confusion........2000-08-14

I have many other books that show depression glass and all of them are great. But this book shows the patterns in line drawings. Sometimes pictures of glass patterns are not as clear as they could be. This book shows a drawing of each pattern and lets you really study it. I found it very helpful in sorting out the initial confusion that new comers sometimes have. Now that I am an 'old pro', I still find myself using this book just to be on the 'safe' side.

This book is a little large to be carrying around, however I still do carry it to places that I already know will have the pattern I am looking for.
The forward describes "Elegant" glassware as handmade and acid etched glassware that was sold by department and jewelry stores during the Depression era through the 1950's, differentiating it from the dime store and giveaway glass that has become known as Depression glass. The word "Elegant" has become "official" nomenclature among today's dealers for designating handmade glass.
It is well organized with the glass patterns in alphabetical order and the prices in columns by color of glass. Most of the pictures are color and have good enough definition to identify what you are looking at. There are a contents by pattern and a contents by company.

The Florences have compiled this second volume to once again help identify the candlestick patterns made from the Depression era to modern day. With no repeated shots from the authors first volume, more than 500 different candlesticks are shown in full color, dozens never before seen in any other book. For simplicity of use this book is arranged according to color: amber, black, blue, crystal, green, iridescent, multicolor, pink, purple, red, smoke, white, and yellow. Many famous glassmakers are represented, such as Heisey, Indiana, Cambridge, Fostoria, Westmoreland, and Tiffin. The descriptive text for each candleholder includes pattern, maker, color, height, and current collector value. A helpful index and bibliography are also provided.

Very beautiful pictures, but limited. Wish Florence has used a different format instead of listing by color. It would have been helpful if he had stated the colors and etchings available for each candlestick.

This book is a very colorful and well written book. However, I expected to see many more pictures of candlesticks than are offered in this book. There is 165 pages of candlesticks with 2 - 3 examples per page, which is probably around the amount made during the Depression Era. Florence gives the company name, the pattern, color, size and mint value. The photos are great and I believe this book is valuable to those just getting into collecting candlesticks from this era.

Orginally purchased for my mother, I purchased it also after looking through it. The original reason for the book was to attempt to id some etched glass, the glass was not in the book, but it was worth it anyway. Beautiful photos, good writing, I saw pieces I had not known exsited. Who knew that such elegant depression glass was out there! I would not recommend it for the "flea market" or "yard sale" groupie, one of his Collectors Encyclopedias may work better, but it is still a very nice book and well worth it if you collect or deal in higher end depression glass.

I have a number of collector books, including Elegant Glassware of the Depression Era : Identification and Value Guide (8th Ed)by Gene Florence. Gene Florence books are my favorite by far. This book is very well formatted. It is loaded with clear pictures that are helpful in pattern identification, informative text, and has easy-to-use pricing guides. The book indexes the glassware by pattern name and by manufacturer.

Whether you are a novice collector or "expert", I am sure you will find this book to be very helpful. Gene Florence's down-to-earth presentation of glassware is refreshing and practical!

                                        Book Description

A remarkable memoir, by turns funny and deeply moving, of one man's coming into his calling and his transformation from ambivalent Ivy League grad to skilled and dedicated firefighter.

Zac Unger didn't feel like much of a firefighter at first. Most of his fellow recruits seemed to have planned for the job all their lives; he was an Ivy League grad responding to a help-wanted ad at an Oakland bus stop. He couldn't keep his boots shined, and he looked horrible in his uniform. Working Fire is the story of how, from this unlikely beginning, Zac Unger came to feel at home among this close-knit tribe, came to master his work's demands, and came to know what it is to see the city of Oakland through a firefighter's eyes.

From the materials of his day's work-the harrowing calls and the hilarious, the moments of triumph and of grief-Zac Unger has forged a timeless story of finding one's path. He never takes himself too seriously, but he comes to take his job very seriously. Because he tells his story with such extraordinary empathy and wit, his fierce passion for his work, his comrades, and the city he protects becomes our own.

I found this book to be incredibly funny, heartwarming, entertaining and very enlightening as to how our beloved firefighters live their lives. They remain our greatest unsung heros. I could hardly put the book down.

5 out of 5 stars what the job is today.......2005-12-16

As a fireman, I have been looking for the contemporary replacement for the 1970s tome "Report from Engine Co. 82" since I first read Dennis Smith's account of the FDNY. I read and reread Smith's book, checking it out of the library at least once a year until it was rereleased in hardback in the 1990s and I bought my own copy. The fire service has changed since the days when the south Bronx and other parts of other cities were burning at a rate unprecedented before or since. With the advent of emergency medicine and active fire prevention and investigation bureaus, our job has grown in the thirty years since Smith's Bronx burned. Before my career is over I expect as much development or more. These changes only firemen can truly see -- from within the ranks.
In "Working Fire," Zac Unger communicates which traditions remain and which traditions are changing in his piece of the firefighting community, while more broadly presenting the daily reality of the modern municipal fire department. On objective terms, a previous reviewer condemns the firefighting aspects of Unger's book. "Working Fire" it is not a training manual. Nor does it claim to be. The reality is that the specific skills Zac Unger learned on his first days in training are very different than the skills he uses or needs daily on the streets of Oakland. Unger's book is not meant to belittle the pain or suffering of others through its accounts. Nor is it meant to glorify obcenely the acts firemen peform. Unger tells the job as he sees it -- as it stands at the turn of the twenty-first century, in a fire department where tradition is met head-on with the needs of a contemporary society. I have been looking for the new "Report from Engine Co. 82." I have found it.

5 out of 5 stars The closest thing to actually riding the fire engine.......2005-08-19

This is a well written account of what its like to be a firefighter. From the initial training through the probationary period and on towards becoming a veteran, Unger takes the reader through each stage of his career. The vivid language allows the reader to experience the conditions inside a burning structure as the firefighters struggle to contain the fire and save lives. Every aspect of the descriptions here rings true, and Unger has provided a compelling and honest glimpse of the struggles and triumphs of life in the fire station.

5 out of 5 stars more men than heros.......2005-04-22

Very good story, real descriptions of fire life as seen from an outsider who, slowly, join our strange world.
I enjoyed the deeply drawn stories of everyday firefighting, with no heros and with all the lacks and concerns of real life.
Well written too, with irony and neat descriptions of people in and out the fire station.

I am always surprised to read how the fire experiences of a fireman of another country could be similar to mine (italy here).

5 out of 5 stars Transcends Typical "Fish Out of Water" Memoir.......2004-11-08

(Note: this may be a duplicate review.) As a librarian, I am guilty of reading many books and commenting on few. "Working Fire" was just too good not to say so to others.

"Working Fire" is an entertaining, honest, and frequently humorous story of Unger's transformation from crunchy Californian and Ivy Leaguer to firefighter. Like Ted Conover's excellent "Newjack," Unger uses the fish-out-of-water theme to take us deep inside a profession most of us only barely understand. Unlike "Newjack," in "Working Fire" we know that Unger wants to become part of this profession, not just observe it for a while, and this adds elements of tension and authenticity that place this book above reportage and make it a classic coming-of-age story. Unger isn't quite as much out of his element as he would like to make us think--we see that when he makes it through firefighting school while others do not--but the constant tension between his past and present life will keep you turning pages, and the well-drawn characters and situations that serve as foils for his development are entertaining as well.

Unger also wisely limited the number of fire scenes. Those he uses are swashbuckling good reading, but are drawn swiftly enough so that readers with only a nominal interest in firefighting will not lose interest in the larger story. (That said, I turned pages without stopping during these scenes, in part because most of the fire scenes are really about Unger, people, and the larger theme of transformation.)

It is also refreshing to read a memoir where the subject is not in recovery, the parents are not evil, and many of the characters are well-meaning and likeable.

"Working Fire" is due out in paper in 2005. With its readability, essential humanity, and "something for everyone" appeal, "Working Fire" would make a great pick for a book club, but it is also a great choice for anyone looking for a good story well told.

                                            Book Description

Belfast, Ireland, was a terrifying place to be during the late '60s and early '70s, especially for a child. The streets were violent with exploding bombs and eruptions of a guerilla war. A generation of children were growing up without their fathers-men lost to the army, the prisons...or the grave. If not for Sister Genevieve, there may have been many more victims of the war. Through the Saint Louise's School, which she founded, Sister Genevieve created a massive support network of teachers, counselors, welfare officers, and psychiatrists. Whether defying the Catholic Church, the IRA, or the British Army, Sister Genevieve was determined to do anything possible to protect and provide stability for her girls. This is the remarkable story of one woman of tremendous spirituality and courage who managed to save hundreds of Irish girls during a horrifying period in history.

5 out of 5 stars A very personal look at a Catholic sister in Belfast........2004-03-26

Sister Genevieve, a Daughter of Charity sister, wanted to work with the poorest of the poor. When she was sent to teach at a school in Belfast, Northern Ireland, she didn't initially feel that this was what she felt drawn to do. As time went by, she came to realize how depressed an area West Belfast was. Most of the Catholic families in the area had little or nothing. Often, what they did have was negatively influenced by the Troubles of the 1970s and 1908s. Sister Genevieve's personal strength helped her to run St. Louise's Catholic school, and to turn it into a haven for the girls who went to school there. The school was able to offer them a true education that they would not have been able to get anywhere else.
