The Best of the Bunch.......2002-10-17

I bought 4 books for our trip to the lake region and this was by far the most useful. Granted it does not include specific information about hours and costs for museums and sites, but we found that most of that information in the other books was out of date anyway. Use it with another guide if you need that. This book gives detailed background information on each area with history and culture, which gives you a great head start on your appreciation of the places you visit. We also found that it included some out-of-the-way places not in the other guides and really appreciated the personal opinons. Restaurants we tried on their recommendation were excellent, compared to the mixed results when we picked on our own. No guide is perfect, but this one comes very close, and the coming 5th edition may be even closer!

The Best of the Bunch.......2002-10-17

Facaros and Pauls have provided a fun and entertaining guide but they often forget to include essential information to make the book practical. For example, we are told that above Orta San Giulio there are several fetching towns and attractions but we are not told how far they are or how to get there. Is a car required? Any public transportation? Is the sanctuary a pleasant 2 mile walk or a challenging 7 mile hike? Perhaps if you are making a return visit such details are not necessary, but for the first time visitor they are essential. Also, anyone planning to visit this area will most likely include both Mantua and Verona on their visit, but only Mantua is covered here. (Yes, Verona is not technically included in the 'Lombard Plain,' but can you imagine a guide to LA that didn't include Disneyland because technically it's in Anaheim, not LA?) You'll need another guide for Verona. If the authors issue a revised edition including Verona plus more detailed info, this will be an excellent guide. Mr Pauls, can we hope for this?

Great resource for token collectors!.......2007-03-09

Put on your reading glasses and your back-brace! This updated volume (4th edition) is huge, heavy, and filled to the brim with small print and b/w pictures...but those are necessary evils considering the breadth of information covered in this book. I wondered if the $35 price would be justified and I suppose it is. There may be easier ways (e.g., on-line) to find information about individual tokens, private merchant coins and cards, commemorative US coins, campaign tokens, as well as territorial gold and silver, but for serious collectors of early American exonumia or anyone trying to identify or establish the value of an unusual US coin, this volume is indispensable. I only wish my eyes were better! I'm glad I bought the book. Beyond its usefulness as a field guide, it is chock-full of interesting historical information and trivia, making it a very cool resource for anyone curious about how commerce, politics, and territorial expansion took place in colonial and post-colonial times. It also covers the Civil War era and after, up until the turn of the 20th century. Collecting these rare coins can be a gratifying hobby. Many of the coins are quite affordable and all are interesting snapshots of the mindset of our forebears. Also, by using this guide one might discover that the weird coin or faded store card found in Grandpa's sock drawer is a unique treasure which could yield big "bucks" (an exonumia term: buckskins were used as currency in the colonial period) at the next coin show or in an online auction. I gave the book 4 stars only because there are no color pictures, even though the details of coins are often easier to see in black and white. If there were color plates, however, I might not have been able to afford to buy this book.

This is the absolute best reference book for collectors of United States Tokens and exonumia. The detailed pictures make identification easy and the index works extremely well. This is a must have for any United States coin/token collector. A++

Perfect for armchair gardeners and amateur historians.......2004-01-12

This is a fascinating book to sit down and read or just to leaf through and enjoy the pictures. And it is a valuable reference on gardening hstory as well.

The Curate's Egg.......2000-04-17

A weighty tome(not one you can easily read in the bath or on the train), this book is a superb source book for the student of garden history. It is lavishly illustrated with sumptuous but relevant pictures. It has the advantage over many garden history books in that it devotes space to Ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian gardens - periods usually skimped over or skipped entirely, giving the impression that academic interest begins with the gardens of the Italian Renaissance. There is an excellent bibliograpy and illustrations are fully credited.

The main problem is the text layout. Text is split on each page into two ragged edge columns, leading to visual break up of sentences and lots of hyphens! This is distracting to the eye and tiring to read. A large margin for captions compounds the problem, making the text columns even narrower. A single column of fully justified text would make the pages less fussy visually and thus easier to read.

A secondary problem, occasioned by the sheer weight of informatin, is that this book will always be (to me, at least) a reference book. There is just too much information, and the book is too heavy and cumbersome, to make it one to actually sit down and read for the pleasure of doing to.

Lemmy tells it like it is.......2007-06-20

Normally I would never take the time to write an online review...I'm just lazy. This time I am compelled to strongly recommend this read! I've been a Motorhead fan since I was 15 (twenty years now) so maybe I am a bit biased but there is no way to argue that this isn't an incredibly well written and entertaining book. As others have stated in their reviews the storytelling flows like a freshly tapped keg of fine ale.
I started reading this book while dropping a duece and when finished I found that I couldn't put the book down (except to wash my hands, of course)! I read it cover to cover in one afternoon and I wished it was longer! Lemmy is a survivor and proof that not every rock star has to be an arrogant pr!ck. Highly recommended.

"The Dirt" UK style.......2006-11-03

Here's a guy who paved the way for Motley Crue's excess and debauchery. A fun read. Gives you a glimpse into UK life during the 60's and 70's sex drugs & rock & roll age. Lemmy is the messiah of speed metal and death metal. It all started with Motorhead. Without Lemmy, we wouldn't have Metallica.

Awesome! .......2005-11-22

Given the fact that my only exposure to Lemmy and Motorhead was the music, I didn't know what to expect from the book. And let me tell you it does not disappoint! I think Lemmy's one the most prolific (and underrated) singers / songwriters in rock, and has influenced countless bands. This man is nearing 60, and showing no signs of slowing down. The current line-up with Phil and Mickey is the strongest that Motorhead has ever had. Hats off to Lemmy. He has been through it all, and is the perfect example of drugs, sex and rock n' roll. The Rolling Stones seem like a bunch of sissies compared to Lemmy. I love the way he has chronicled his life in the book, from the places he's been to all the colourful people he has met over his long career. There are plenty of surprises in the book. However, I wish he'd mentioned more about the making of each album (and songs), and what went into it. It ends in 2002, with the release of "Hammered", so i kinda feel it's incomplete. Lots more has happened since then. I wonder if Lemmy thinks of a volume 2.
If you're a Motorhead fan, you need to buy this book, and if you're not a Motorhead fan, you need to buy this book.

The other way 'round.......2005-10-02

Well, for starters I kinda bought this book out of sheer curiosity.
I knew some of Motörhead's music and I read and saw some interviews with Lemmy (plus I figured that a guy that survives this long in the rock business OUGHT to be one of a kind...!) but I can't say I'm a Motörhead fan.
Or am I not?
After I read that funny and witty autobiography I looked at Lemmy with different eyes; he's certainly not the average person and he's got a lot more to tell that what you might think... and he also puts it down in a clever way. Maybe a bit rude, sometimes, but that's one thing I at lest expected, so to speak...
Now I thing I'm gonna check out his music with a lot more attention...!
...go figure...!

A very readable book that provides balanced and insightful coverage of the whole of Churchill's life. I would highly recommend this book either to those who have not previously read much about Churchill or equally to those who have read other Churchill biographies or war histories and wish to take a fresh look. Of particular value is the way that the author take the occasional opportunity to dispel certain myths and revisionist ideas about Churchill.

Thoughts and opinions on Winston Churchill.......2006-06-21

Not a true biography but more than just a compilation of essays concerning Churchill's life and times, the author provides us with a 300+ page synopsis/chronology with a sprinkling of his thoughts, insights and conclusions. I found nothing new or "earth-shattering" here. On the other hand it makes a nice supplement, (i.e. much like Meachem's book on FDR and Churchill), to biographys/books I have read. If you are looking for a full-fledged bio start elsewhere, (Manchester or Gilbert), and if your interest is piqued as mine was, come back to this one.

Churchill reading at its best!.......2005-01-09

A compact biography (384 pages) by Oxford Historian Geoffrey Best is far and away the best I have read on Churchill. The many facets of Churchill's life are covered in a series of essays from the author. Best summarizes Churchill's life with clarity and high degree of accuracy.

If you're looking for a comprehensive study on Churchill, this isn't it. You won't find page after page of stilted verbiage here, but you will find a well written presentation of this fascinating man, perhaps the savior of England. If it is possible to write a detailed account of such a varied figure within the brevity of such a small volume, the author has done so admirably.

Though the author clearly admires the subject, this isn't just another "I love Churchill" book. Best gives a fair and balanced account of many areas where Churchill may have erred, such as Gallipolli. The book is fair, and it is no-nonsense, to the point, without a lot of ambivalent inflection.

I have a number of volumes on the life and times of Churchill. I may go to other volumes for research purposes, but this is probably the most enjoyable read I have encountered on the man.

A good read........2004-11-30

The author (Geoffrey Best) is British and that stands out clearly in this volume, especially in the first few chapters. He comes across stuffy, somewhat pompous, and perhaps too conservative. However, as the work progresses the substance of the story of the Great Man and the events surrounding his life come to the fore, and the author falls to the rear. All told, one ends up in possession of a fine, well balanced biography, though lacking in depth. I found the work entirely suitable to my need for an introduction to Churchill. This book is a broad brush of not an in-depth study.

Churchill: A Cogent Inspiration to Future Leaders.......2003-12-01

Geoffrey Best has realized an impressive tour de force in concisely narrating the life of Winston Churchill in less than 350 pages. Best excels at making a cogent analysis of Churchill's strengths and weaknesses. Churchill knew early on that he was called to great things and made his best to make it happen. Churchill's road to destiny was not straightforward in part because of his own personality. "Churchill: A Study in Greatness" is an invitation to know more about an exceptional man who stands out in world history while most of his critics and detractors have sunk into total oblivion.
