What a fabulous book. For anyone who is a fan of this imaginative, committed to animals, wildlife-graphic artist, you will love this. The print quality is wonderful and every painting Charley Harper has ever done is cataloged in brilliant, living color! Lucky me, I own 4 Harpers - but feel like I own them all with this book.

A Delightful Mixture of Art, Science, and Humor.......2001-08-11
Beguiled by the Wild is a complete collection of limited edition prints by wildlife artist Charley Harper that spans three decades of his career. The captions printed in the book are the original versions that were issued with each print. The prints have long been sold out and this book represents the only published collection of his work. A rare self-interview and introduction by Roger Caras are the only additional text. Each page brings to life an example of Charley's unique ability to combine humor, art, and science. Readers will be hard-pressed to flip through the pages of this coffee table book without stopping at almost every page to learn the message inherent with each piece. Charley's unusual style, which he calls "minimal realism", catches the eye and draws a smile. Often a maze of bright colors and geometric shapes dominates the scene making an initial interpretation puzzling. Reading the caption usually provides insight into the biology of selected insects, birds and mammals, which is often whimsical and always factual. "Armadittos", for example, depicts and inverted armadillo mother suckling a line of four pups in a circle of pine needles. The caption describes how armadillos always reproduce with four genetically identical quaruplets of the same sex (and they live in pine forests of the southern states). Similary, "Jesus Bugs" depicts a group of water strider insects with large circles surrounding each of their six feet, which also form circular shadows under the water. Only an entomologist would know that these circles represent depressions on the water surface caused by minute foot hairs that keep the insects from sinking. This artist has attracted a large audience of amateur and professional biologists who should get their hands on a copy of this book before it too goes out of print.
Great Coffee table book for lovers of animals & modern art.......2000-05-02
This is a wonderful coffee table book for anyone who loves animals and modern art. In his unusual style, the artist brings animals to life with geometric precision. The more I look at the art, the more I like it.
Many types of animals are included. There are lots of birds, as well as insects, sea life, dogs, and cats. Forest, farm and African animals are also included. Many of the drawing as well as the anecdotes with them are quite humorous.
Some of my favorites are a raccoon hanging upside down, two whales hugging, a baby harp seal & one of a blue jay bathing. I also especially liked "Love on a limb" featuring two monkeys with their tails entwined.
My all time favorite is called "The Wedding Feast." It features two praying mantis mating. The caption below it is quite funny. There is a nice index in the back of the over 125 plates shown in the book.

A Wonderful Training Guide.......2005-01-12
This is a wonderful book when used properly. The book is to be used as a training guide for a class or workshop. The book is set up to work out specific excercises for a mock historical site. I took such a workshop through the National Trust in which this book was used. We followed along with the instructor (who used slides, charts, and yes, colored markers--see review below)working in team groups. It has been a valuable reference to refer back to. Even if you do not get to take the workshop put on by the National Trust you could adopt the book to conduct a workshop in your own organization. It empahsizes using historical materials and research available to you to create inclusive narratives based on facts and verifiable, giving authority to your exhibits, rather than leaving visitors with mistruths and misconceptions.
Great Tours, and Not a Great Book!.......2004-10-15
I am very disappointed with the book. Just a few ideas are given here and then repeated and repeated and repeated. The authors give very simplified and basic instructions about guide training in a way that can be useful only for schoolteachers in remote areas of Africa.
For instance, they suggest a procedure, which begins with the following operation: "Begin the session with an open discussion. Ask the class: What is material culture? If the class know what it is, ask them to name examples of material culture, both generally and at the site. If they are not familiar with the term (?!?), give a quick accurate definition: material culture is anything shaped by human hands".
An another example is the authors' suggestion to trainers about how to prepare their class on "Identifying the Site's Topics". They say: "Assemble materials. Flip chart pages developed during Activity 2.1 (tape to walls or make available for people to see). Easel, flip chart, and markers of at least four colors." For God's sake, it's about the guide training for conducting historical tours and not about kindergarten activities!
The whole text of approx. 150 pages twirls around a basic idea that 'a great tour' is based on several elements such as storylines, themes, physical evidence, biography of historic personalities and historical context. How to pull it all together is probably a scheduled purpose of the book, but I'm afraid that its authors missed their aim.
The crucial enigma (at least for me) remains the fact that this title has been published in cooperation with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. One could have expected that, given the support which this respectable institution has offered, the authors would do a better (more serious and effective!) job.

Excellent intro to bird songs.......2006-08-17
I've birded for a number of years but I wanted to be able to distinguish birds by their calls, especially the shy ones. This CD volme was the perfect introduction. Dick Walton's informal, almost folksy, comments made for enjoyable listening and learning. Sure there are only 91 species but one great sampling. Now that he has taught me "hooks" and "handles" I have graduated to using the Stokes CDs, but at least I can now differentiate closely related songs thanks to Mr. Walton.
If you are new to bird songs, please start with this volume. In contrast the Stokes volume presents the songs, but no commentary. It is up to you to find the hooks and handles and figure out how to memorize all the songs.
BTW, I disagree with Mr Walton on one bird. He says the California Quail is calling "Chicago, Chicago." In my field experience I am sure it is looking for "Atlanta, Atlanta."

If you live in North America east of the Mississipi and want to identify birds by ear, read on...
This audio set is a very well thought out and produced tutorial for introducing beginning "ear" birders to the world of birding by ear. The audio quality is excellent with several renditions of each song and call. The pace is well suited to the target audience - only after repeated listening will you want to skip ahead through sections. The groupings of similar songs seem well designed, and reflect situations in the field that pose problems. Each song is described verbally, with an onomatopoetic description. I wish the CD were coded so that sub-tracks could be accessed directly without the introductory descriptions, but the design of this set isn't as encyclopedia of song, rather as short course in learning how to identify song.
Buy this and the "More birding by ear", listen to them for 10 - 30 minutes a day (great drive time listening), and master the art of birding by ear!
Birding by Ear, Eastern/Central, Peterson Field Guides.......2001-12-07
....This set of audio tapes was a disappointment to me. I had wanted a set of bird songs to accompany my new Peterson Eastern Birds field guide, 4th edition.( Previously, I had owned the 2nd edition and its excellent, page-coordinated, accompanying tapes and had used them for years.) I bought this new set of audio tapes blind, so to speak, because they were shrink-wrapped with no real description visible. No one in any of the retail stores I consulted knew anything about them nor was willing to break into the shrink-wrapping.
....Birding by Ear, Eastern/Central is actually a 3-tape short course in identifying bird calls. It is essentially useless for field identification. To make use of this set of tapes, one would have to sit down and listen and listen and listen to interminable commentary by a sonorous male voice introducing bird calls in clusters that are of minimal use because they are grouped by similarity, which often doesn't translate into geography or habitat. The second side of the third tape is a "review" that is actually a test.... one must listen to a series of unidentified songs and try to remember what they are, after having spent the hours required to listen to the other 5 sides of the tapes.
.... The up side of this set of tapes is that the bird song recordings are excellent. They include both the song and the call. (But they are useless in the field in this format.)

I have never been to Tahiti, but after reading the fun, informative facts about Tahiti, seeing the beautiful pictures, and sampling some of the excellent cocktail recipes, I am ready to go!
Mr. Bondurant's love and knowledge of Tahiti come through clearly in the book, which is very well laid out. It provides enough information and explains things in such a way that an amateur can make delicious Tahitian cocktails as well as the most experienced bartender. The fun facts about Tahiti, along with summaries of the total hotels and the gorgeous pictures, makes this book a must have.
Until I can take my first trip to Tahiti, this book will help bring a little Tahiti to my home.

I could not stop reading this book, i did not want to put it down. The whole time it made me think about my own life and review my past and present relationships. She is a great writter who speaks about real life issues. I loved this book and it has inspired me to read more of her writtings.

What you bring to the table.......2005-01-25
So much of what you find in a book is what you bring to it when you read it. I liked this book a whole lot--enough to recommend it to several friends because I thought it was a good example of looking honestly at your past to see how you got where you are now. Several times I wanted to shout at the young Susan, "Grow up and quit being so melodramatic!" But that's what I wish I could shout back through time at my own young self, as well. In the end, you are what you are, and what you've done has made you into the person you are today. I identified with Susan's propensity for choosing the wrong man and for shutting down good relationships for bad ones. She does grow up, though, and this walk through her youth was honest. She doesn't pull any punches, even for herself. It was very well written, if sometimes a little frustrating (it's really hard to watch people make mistakes in slow motion). If I had a daughter, I'd give her this and "He's Just Not That Into You" as good instruction manuals.
Author revisits exes and probes why's of relationships.......2004-08-24
What a wonderfully zany idea--revisit your exes to probe the why's of your regret-filled relationships. I thoroughly enjoyed this book--laughing often, appreciating Ms. Shapiro's skipping along, witty style, and looking forward to her next roller coaster escapade.
Ms. Shapiro demonstrates exceptional emotional courage by revisiting her past loves in the first place, and then revealing the unraveling of her dilemmas in public. She is a gifted storyteller, artfully narrating the intimate, analytic story of her mid-life crises in a series of engaging, seriocomic vignettes.
Like most guys, I seldom read this type of book, so I can't make comparisons. But the premise sounds totally original and Susan Shapiro's candidness is remarkable. "Five Men..." is a treat, and seems a natural for a film.

...Shapiro, self-obsessed and boring. Some small gems but you had to dig way to hard to find them. There has to be more to her life than her mirror? Would have made a great Cosmo article but falls short as a book!
A fun and intriguing read.......2007-01-22
Who hasn't wondered why their relationship fell apart or what their exes were thinking when they broke up? Most people wonder forever, but Susan Shapiro took it further and actually went to find out why her relationships went south. Her journey to ex-boyfriend land was very insightful because who hasn't made the same mistakes in their relationships? I think seeing her relationship problems made me more aware of things I've done in my own. And it's nice to know that you really can learn from your past relationships so that you can improve your current one. Some great scenes in this book-particularly the scenes with her family. I love those!!! I can totally see this book as a movie, too.

I immediately got this book after I read LIGHTING UP and I finished it in about 4 days... Susan Shapiro wrote this hilarious book venturing in past relationships... Tracking down old boyfriends, and and asking them questions she's always wanted to. This is a WONDERFUL & entertaining book, and I would recommend it to EVERYONE!!!!

This book visits similar terrain to the DVD "High Fidelity," except that this is a real journey and not fictionalized. The results are unflinchingly honest and will prompt many a reader to ponder whether they would be brave enough to similar revisit their past loves!

Joan Rivers was right: Susan Shapiro IS hysterical. And she's an absolutely wonderful writer. In FIVE MEN WHO BROKE MY HEART, Shapiro pulls off the rare feat of entertaining the reader and imparting deep information at the same time. Of course this book has juicy details, just as the title promises. But it satisfies on a deeper level as well. The writer knows so much about relationships between men and women, and she's willing to share what she knows. She doesn't just tell the stories of her failed relationships with men; she describes her gradual transformation from girl to woman. It's not often that a writer is so obviously truthful in a memoir...Shapiro tells us everything we want to know about relationships, even when the truth doesn't reflect well on her. After reading FIVE MEN WHO BROKE MY HEART, I want to read everything Susan Shapiro has written. Hers is a voice that's smart and funny--it's a voice that I trust.

I have visited Glendalough several times and it is one of my favorite places in Ireland. This beautifully written book brought this sacred site to life in an even deeper way and I cannot wait to go back, only this time it will have to be at least for a weekend retreat.
