This book, while somewhat outdated, provides accurate and detailed information about the ruins in Guatemala in particular. The guides I traveled with all wanted to purchase it to enhance their information. The descriptions help you make decisions about where to go and having it with you enhances viewing. Places are generally easier to get to now.

Useful and interesting guide to many Southern maya sites.......1999-08-23
Like her other book on the Yucatan, this one focuses on many smaller sites. I was surprised that it didn't mention El Puente as a site, however, and it was written before the Copan Museum opened, which is too bad. Unfortunately it is already sadly outdated. I hope she does another book soon.

Excellent book for beginners.......2001-08-01
This book covers everything a beginning fish keeper needs to know. It has in depth explainations on the concepts that are hard to grasp. My favorite part of this book is the second half which covers many of the popular and unique fish that exist. While it doesn't give exact care for each fish, it tells what is neccesary to keep the species and similar fish. I reccomend this book to beginners who want to set up and learn how to properly maintain a healthy aquarium, wether it be fresh or salt water.
Guy's Reviews.......2001-01-01
This is a very good starting point for anyone interested in the aquarium hobby. It has information on setting up both marine and fresh water aquariums, plus a section at the back of the book that gives an overview on the different families of fish, both fresh water, marine and brackish water fish. It is a very good for beginners however the main downside to this book is that it is lacking information about water chemistry. This book is not to be overlooked however if you are going to buy it you are best not to stop at buying "only" this particular book before setting up your aquarium.

CATALOGUE LISTING OF BEER CANS UP TO 1975 .......2005-01-30
Reference book. This book really is the bible for beercan collectors, people interested in development of the modern can structure (from the bottle through cone tops, steel through aluminum), or people who want to look into the history of cans/breweries that were in their local areas. A lot of fun just to turn through the pages.
There are 124 pages to the paperback edition (not sure if there was a hardcover edition). Pages 49-124 have apprx. 45 cans pictured per page listed alphabetically with a short description at the page bottom of the brewers name, location, and date.
Pages 1-23 describe old breweries, cans, pull top evolution and how to rate can conditions. Also brief pointers on how to restore old cans.
The cans are mostly American but some foriegn cans are shown as well.
Obviously much has happened in the beer industry since this book was published but it is the best point of departure for anyone interested in cans or brewery items. One day the Smithsonian will have a can collection and this book will be on display with it.

Book Description
This case study deals with the collective biography of late medieval students at a small university closely linked to the Palatine court. Based on the data provided by the matriculation list and using modern empirical methods, an analysis of their social and regional origins, their learning conditions and behaviour, and their later careers is made. The first part of the book examines the development of the area of recruitment and the social composition of the Heidelberg studium generale, followed by a detailed investigation of various categories of scholars: nobles, higher and lower clergy, monks, rich and poor. In more than 60 tables the book provides rich statistical material, which might be helpful for further studies in a comparative perspective. an extensive prosopographical appendix contains detailed biographical data for numerous students. CURRIC. GRACE & POWER: THE PRIVATE WORLD OF THE KENNEDY WHITE HOUSE, New York Times bestselling author Sally Bedell Smith takes us inside the Kennedy White House with unparalleled access and insight. Having interviewed scores of Kennedy intimates, including many who have never spoken before, and drawing on letters and personal papers made available for the first time, Smith paints a richly detailed picture of the personal relationships behind the high purpose and poiltical drama of the twentieth century's most storied presidency.
At the dawn of the 1960s, a forty-three-year-old president and his thirty-one-year-old first lady – the youngest couple ever to occupy the White House – captivated the world with their easy elegance and their cool conviction that anything was possible. Jack and Jackie Kennedy gathered around them an intensely loyal and brillant coterie of intellectuals, journalists, diplomats, international jet-setters and artists. Perhaps as never before, Washington was sharply divided between the “ins” and the “outs.”
In his public life, JFK created a New Frontier, stared down the Soviets, and devoted himself to his wife and children. As first lady, Jackie mesmerized foreign leaders and the American people with her style and sophistication, creating a White House renowned for its beauty and culture. Smith brilliantly recreates the glamorous pageant of the Kennedy years, as well as the daily texture of the Kennedys’ marriage, friendships, political associations, and, in Jack’s case, multiple love affairs.
Smith’s striking revelations include new information about what drew Jack to his numerous mistresses – and what effects the relationships ultimately had on the women; about the rivalries and resentments among Kennedy’s advisers; and about the poignant days before and after Kennedy’s assassination.
Smith has fashioned a vivid and nuanced portrait not only of two extraordinary individuals but of a new age that sprang to life around them. Shimmering with intelligence and detail,
GRACE AND POWER is history at its finest.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad. Focuses more on the social aspects........2007-05-01
Don't look for an in depth analysis of policies or events. Instead, look for in depth analysis of the parties and the social scene. The book does give slightly more insight on some of the key interpersonal relationships. It also carves a picture of Jackie as being much stronger than others. You get more of a sense of her grace, intelligence, and grit.
Behind the scenes at our 20th century Camelot!.......2006-08-27
Although Sally Bedell Smith's "Grace and Power" cannot compete with Arthur Schlesinger's "A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House" nor with Theodore Sorenson's "The Kennedy Legacy," the author makes absolutely no pretensions of doing so. Far from a political history of the Kennedy years, Ms. Smith has drawn on private letters, personal papers and 142 interviews with those close to John F. and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy to illuminate the personal lives of the martyred president and his First Lady. Her take on the couple's complex relationship, including his compulsion to take numerous lovers and her manner of coping with this problem, are mainstays here.
The book reads like an upscale Kitty Kelly bio. It is filled with sensational gossip, character sketches of glorious personalities, and fascinating anecdotes of the people and events that made the Kennedy years so exciting. Ms. Smith is an excellent raconteur who has done her research and written a nonfiction "tell all" that reads like a best-selling novel. But it is not what I would call a serious biography.
Sally Bedell Smith has also written biographies of Princess Diana and Pamela Churchill Harriman and has been a contributing editor at Vanity Fair for about ten years.
If you are a "Kennedy junkie" and want to read about the 20th century Camelot, this is a book you will love. If you are looking for excellent political history, go elsewhere. I did enjoy "Grace and Power: The Private World of the Kennedy White House," and though I was an adolescent during the magical time JFK was in office, it brought back memories of the president and first lady I idolized. On the other hand, there are things I wish had never been made public. And it is all made public here!

Exquisite and containing information I've read nowhere else.......2006-06-13
What a unique way to weave the story of the politics, history, friendships, relationships, marriage into one finely written work. It's as if you can pick any day from January 1961 to Nov 25, 1963 and there, as if opening a long forgotten datebook, is the gem containing an intimate picture of a special family party, a state dinner, a cruise on the Honey Fitz, Jackie's White House school--name it, if it's personal and human (yet without judgement) you'll find it in Sally Bedell Smith's cultural/social history of the Kennedy years. It's not all fine dining and socializing because important history and the toll it takes is playing out all the while--a deft tapesty!
Grace and Power: Jack and Jackie reign at the top of the White House Hill.......2006-06-05
Washington insider and biographer Sally Bedell Smith opens the doors to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue during the Kennedy administration. This is a revealing look at the private passions, joys, griefs and lives of those people who were stars
in the Kennedy court. We also get a good look at Jack Kennedy and
his wife Jackie. Those readers expecting a tabloidish perusal will be disappointed. This is a serious book and deals with
the major obstacles faced by Kennedy in his short term prior to
the tragedy of Dallas. We learn:
how Kennedy dealt with Khrushchev; the Bay of Pigs and Cuban
Missle Crisis; the burgeoning furor over integration and the
relationship Kennedy developed with his staff and Congress.
We learn about the lives and opinions of such key Kennedy loyalists as Bob McNamara; LBJ; Dean Rusk. We are invited to
the Kennedy compound where we become better acquainted with that
fascinating family. US involvement in Vietnam following the overthrow of Diem is also discussed with intelligent commentary,
Jack Kennedy was brilliant. He was also ill with many problems most notably his Addison's disease. Kennedy was a notorious womanizer who was amoral! The press of the day did not reveal his many affairs with everyone from Marilyn Monroe to White House secretaries. Jack Kennedy was not a nice man!
Jackie was a jet setter who loved to spend money on clothes, travel and shopping sprees. She was also highly intelligent, engineered much needed White House renovation and was a plus on
diplomatic jaunts abroad. In Paris she talked fluent French with De Gaulle and represented the US well in trips to such places as
India.
This is a fine book for those seeking more knowledge of the Kennedy White House. Along with the book by Richard Reeves it is a good introduction to John Kennedy and the 1000 days this modern day Prince Arthur and his Guineviere reigned over America.
I liked it............2005-08-18
I liked this book because it was kind of like reading the "Enquirer" in novel form. It certainly is not an historical novel, but it's filled with gossipy type info that we all seem to like. Is also shows that this group was like no other that we have seen. A buddy becomes president and they all jump on the band wagon for the "good times", all the hangers-on...can't say as I blame them. It also shows that the whole thing centered around the Kennedys, either you were with them or you were against them...no two ways about it. They had the money, they had the influence, and they were leading the royal life...probably the closest we've come to royalty...or at least they thought they were. However the consequences they suffered, divorce, alcoholism, womanizing etc. shows that the good times come to an end and life goes on with or without them. Most of them amounted to very little...it shows that probably Jackie was the only one with any brains, and probably wondered "what the hell is going on around here?"....I would still recommend this book as an interesting read.

Product Description
Editorial Review: Drawing on letters, personal papers, and interviews with Kennedy intimates speaking for the first time, this sensitive portrait of the twentieth century's most storied presidency reveals how the Kennedys and their circle changed the political and social landscape of America - and how it, in turn, altered them. In the process, Smith reveals JFK for what he was: a politically progressive man who created a New Frontier and stood up to the Soviets; a family man who, though a devoted father, was entangled with scores of mistresses and women half his age; and an extraordinary leader with a streak of uncontrollable recklessness. "A mesmerizing account of the Kennedy years...filled with rich reporting, sophisticated insight, and riveting tales." (Walter Isaacson, author of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: AN AMERICAN LIFE)

harris intellect can stand up to wilde's.......2006-03-30
this book is a work of art and is the primary source of all the biographies of Wilde. I particularly liked the last part of the book where Harris debates Wilde about male to male love vs. male to female love.Harris is plainly not intimidated by Wilde's witticism's and keeps to a serious vein without being rankled or becoming victimized by Wilde's ability to trivialize subjects with a veneer of parody. Among more of Harris insights is the statement that Bosie,(Wilde's "lover") and Bosie's father the Marquiss of Quennsbury are really 2 opposite ends of the same log.Harris biography seems more like a piece of literature and the life of Wilde, could even Dickens have thought up such a character as Oscar Wilde,I know Poe did!!
biography as art.......2005-04-21
One cannot improve upon the remarks fore-mentioned of George Bernard Shaw's. Long before public figures of no talent were thrust upon us, literate minds instead of marketeers gathered around the chosen few as johnny-come-latelys and would rarely disappoint. This is a thrilling, gripping read.Style, tact and endless grace in words for a tragic, painful public artist run throughout this personal account.Much can be gained from savoring this moment in time if one aspires celebrity and fame and wants to avoid its dizzying pitfalls.
A Story of How to Enjoy Life and Be Miserable -- All at Once.......2003-02-03
I picked this book up in a used book store for [money] more than when it was purchased new in 1960. The pages literally crumbled as I turned them, but I couldn't put the book down. I was enthralled with the life of Oscar Wilde. Now, this biography isn't one written years after the subject's death from scraps of information. No. This is written by a very close friend of Wilde's, Frank Harris. In being written by someone of such closeness, it lends credence to the harsh words the author had to say of Wilde. Harris calls him lazy and slothenly. Of course, Wilde caused quite a sensation in his time. He was imprisoned under other pretenses, but mainly because he was a homosexual in a time period when this was not acceptable. Oscar was one who did not care what others thought of him. He was determined to live a life of pleasure and to make money doing things that he liked: writing and speaking. However, he did a great deal of leaching off of others. There's no denying Wilde's genius. I have yet to read any of his works except for a short essay entitled "The Soul of Man Under Socialism." To me, the thoughts seemed profound. But Harris says that Oscar never said or wrote anything original; he merely took other people's thoughts, meshed them together, and said them in a more profound way. This is a biography that reads like a fine story. Harris is a great writer and has more first-hand knowledge of his subject than any other biographer that I've read. I'd reccomend this book to others without reservation.
"The best life of Oscar Wilde", said George Bernard Shaw........1999-07-08
"The best life of Oscar Wilde", said George Bernard Shaw after reading this book. I cannot but agree with him utterly. No unnecesary data is wasted, no long reflexions bore us. It's just an Oscar's very close friend telling us with great elegance and delicacy the story of one he has admired and loved so much, but without fear of saying the truth. Amicus Plato, sed magis amica veritas. Of course, the reader has to know Mr Harris is the true "lead actor" in the story he's telling us, always supporting the Truth and the Right. But one can easily forgive him for that in reward for the great moments un Oscar's life he's saved from oblivion and darkness. A wonderful work of art itself, this biography must be read by every admirer of that Prince of Charm Oscar Wilde was. X. Careaga
