5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!!.......2007-09-14

Beautifully written. Beautifully illustrated. This is a wonderful story and the kids (ages 7 and 3) were enthralled. It is a science book that reads like the best kind of picture book. We learned so many things from this and had fun doing it. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Juneau 2nd grader.......2007-03-23

If you like to read about different kinds of homes and what lives in them, you would like this book. It is about a cactus that lives for 150 years! In that time about 38 animals make holes and move in. After 150 years it falls over and 10 to 20 more animals move in. This is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Science that trips off the tongue........2005-12-08

A fascinating book about the Saguaro cactus that reads like poetry. Highly recommended. Warning: you will want to take a trip to Arizona.

5 out of 5 stars Superb and Engaging Book.......2005-10-23

Even though it deals with intricate details of the life of a cactus, it has become my almost 3 year old's favorite book. The visual details are very engaging, and our little one loves to point out each of the animals, and "tap tap tap" along with the woodpecker. This book is delightful, and you will learn as much as your child will, as you read it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for young and old alike.......2005-09-21

Excellent book for young and old alike. As an adult new to the desert, it gave me a good, quick understanding of the 'circle of life' of the Saguaro and the critters involved with it. It is nicely laid out, simple to read, and even speaks of spiders and other sometimes scary beings in a non-threatening manner. Really quite a good book. I even sent a copy to my good friend's 6 and 9 year olds and they, along with their folks, really enjoyed it. I highly recommend it.

This book is very educational to use in a classroom or an education focused day camp and is not an easy read as a story book at bedtime.

5 out of 5 stars Not your ordinary desert book.......2004-05-12

We have been reading many different desert books for a unit study. It seemed that we kept running across the same old information in every book. Then we read this one! It tells you things that you just don't find in other books. This turned out to be our favorite book. The pictures are wonderful and it is easily understandable by young children, thought adults will learn a thing or two as well! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This book was full of wonderful pictures and information.......2003-03-30

I have used this book every year as a third grade teacher. It is wonderful as a read aloud for science to illustrate how animals and plants adapt to their environment and rely on other plants and animals for survival. This is one of the best books I have ever read to my class because it is not dull science jargon but presented as the story of the life of the cactus. Don't miss this one for teaching and learning about life science in the desert.

5 out of 5 stars Our third grade class loved your book........1999-11-03

Our third grade loved your book. It gave us a lot of information about the desert. The illustrations were excellent. We especilly liked the use of author techniques such as diagrams, onomatopeias, catchy title and colorful illustrations. We would love to contact Barbara Bash.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-12-23

This book, written in playful rhyme, chronicles how a "seed so black and tiny" travels through the desert and eventually takes root in the earth, growing into a giant sanguaro.

Helping along the way is a packrat who carries the fruit which contains the seeds "with a great deal of worry." Why? Because he was being chased by a "snake that slid with no sound" who, by the way, is being followed by a "bird that raced on the ground" who is . . . well, you get the picture.

The double-page spreads-done in rich greens, purples, golds, and yellows-illustrate the desert flora and fauna wonderfully. Readers will enjoy the discovering the clever details found throughout the book.

The author has included a "timeline" of how saguaros grow in the Sonoran Desert in addition to a page of "Fun Facts" about the creatures mentioned in the story. Did you know, for example, that coyotes can "dash" up to 30 miles per hour!

This fun read-aloud was a huge hit in every classroom in which we reviewed it. The text's repeating rhyme, written in the style of "This is the House That Jack Built," allowed students the opportunity to predict what the speaker was going to say.

In addition to being used as an engaging tale for storytime, it can also be used to build phonemic awareness and to enrich social studies units on deserts, plants, and more. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A colorful and engaging story.......2003-11-17

The collaborative effort of author Jennifer Ward and illustrator Mike K. Ranger, The Seed And The Giant Saguaro is an absorbing picture book about how a variety of desert animals contribute to the planting, growth, and life of a Giant Saguaro cactus. The narrative is written in a "This is the house that Jack built" style, with each new page spread adding another line to the saga of the cactus' rise from a little seed. A colorful and engaging story, The Seed And The Giant Saguaro is especially appropriate for children ages 3 to 6.

Amazing facts about the little-known but heavily-filmed Saguaro Cactus make this book a powerhouse for young children. Parents enjoy reading to their children because they too learn as they read along. Storad writes in a nice, clear fashion and explains both the "insides" and the outsides of the plant. Book Description

The era of the self-playing or automatic piano embraced the first three decades of the 20th century. Piano-playing cabinets were followed by the pneumatic player-piano, soon to be known the world over by the name of the leading American make - Pianola. There were many other makes, of course, with names like Kastonome, Triumph, Pistonola, Claviola, Autoplayer and Apollo. Invented almost simultaneously in Germany and America, player pianos became the most sought-after addition to the family home and the huge industry that built them and made their perforated paper music rolls became both important and wealthy. This book, written by a world-renowned authority on mechanical music and its instruments, relates the development of the automatic piano from the spring-powered dulcimer-playing musical clocks of the 16th century through the once-popular barrel-playing pianos and street pianos to the great era of the Reproducing Piano that could bring a famous artist's interpretation of a musical classic into your own drawing-room. The inventors, their perpetual quest for perfection, and their successes and failures are related in this new and fully-illustrated history. Just how the automatic piano works is described in both words and the author's own clear line-drawings, together with 603 b/w and 43 full colour photos. Also, a guide to servicing, maintaining, and playing player pianos and the magnificent Aeolian Orchestrelle roll-playing reed organ is included. Illustrated appendices include a list of makers, brand-names, and a modern-day valuation guide. 8 1/2" x 11" 43 color and 603 b/w photos Index

Previously published in two separate volumes (Summer Garden Glory and Winter Garden Glory), this book shows the author's six-acre private garden, Foggy Bottom, throughout the year. Book Description

Ethno-nationalist conflicts are rampant today, causing immense human loss. Stanley J. Tambiah is concerned with the nature of the ethno-nationalist explosions that have disfigured so many regions of the world in recent years. He focuses primarily on collective violence in the form of civilian "riots" in South Asia, using selected instances in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India. He situates these riots in the larger political, economic, and religious contexts in which they took place and also examines the strategic actions and motivations of their principal agents. In applying a wide range of social theory to the problems of ethnic and religious violence, Tambiah pays close attention to the history and culture of the region.
On one level this provocative book is a scrupulously detailed anthropological and historical study, but on another it is an attempt to understand the social and political changes needed for a more humane order, not just in South Asia, but throughout the world.

Superb description of the riots in Asia with obvious applications to the rest of the world. The associated analysis (while too heavy in sociological terminology) should be read by everyone concerned with the twin evils of ethnicity and religion.

                                Book Description

This book is an extremely timely and important publication. 14 interesting papers, based on intensive fieldwork in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India, explore a highly controversial subject. They touch on the everyday religious lives of Muslims in these countries. The book argues that Islam cannot be understood through the works of theologians alone, few whom it is a formal, uniform and rigid system of beliefs and practices. Popular Islam, or Islam as it is practices by millions of Muslims in South Asia, has an empirical validity and is a dynamic process of adjustment and accommodation as well as conflict with other religions, with which it coexists.

Religious Division and Social Conflict is an ethnographic account of the emergence of Hindu nationalism in a tribal (adivasi) community in Chhattisgarh, Central India. It is argued that the successful spread of Hindu nationalism in this area is due to the instrumentalist involvement of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a militant Hindu nationalist organization, in local affairs. While active engagement in civilizing strategies has enabled the RSS to legitimize its presence and endear itself to the local community, the book argues that participation in more aggressive strategies has enabled this organization to fuel and attach local tensions to a broader Hindu nationalist agenda. The book further argues that while the RSS is the active agent in this process, its specific impact in this area is a result of its opposition to the Church.

                                      Book Description

Throughout South and Southeast Asia, groups battle over definitions of identity--in direction and character--for their state, a struggle complicated by the legacy of colonialism. The contributors to this volume explore the intricate, dynamic relationships that pertain between women's agency and the state-making institutions and armed forces of Kashmir, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Burma (Myanmar). They also address the complex roles of Islam, Hinduism, and Theravada Buddhism in these postcolonial dynamics.

In particular, the contributors examine religion as a way of understanding how women's agency is constituted, created, and constrained during times of conflict with the state and other armed actors, such as guerilla groups and paramilitaries. These essays at the intersection of gender, religion, and peace studies will be of interest to a wide range of scholars and students who study conflict and hope for peace in South and Southeast Asia.

As soon as the ceremony was over, he began an emergency meeting with President Bill Clinton on the financial crisis in Mexico. This was not only a harbinger of things to come during what would prove to be a rocky period in the global economy; it also captured the essence of Rubin himself--short on formality, quick to get into the nitty-gritty.

From his early years in the storied arbitrage department at Goldman Sachs to his current position as chairman of the executive committee of Citigroup, Robert Rubin has been a major figure at the center of the American financial system. He was a key player in the longest economic expansion in U.S. history. With In an Uncertain World, Rubin offers a shrewd, keen analysis of some of the most important events in recent American history and presents a clear, consistent approach to thinking about markets and dealing with the new risks of the global economy.

Rubin's fundamental philosophy is that nothing is provably certain. Probabilistic thinking has guided his career in both business and government. We see that discipline at work in meetings with President Clinton and Hillary Clinton, Chinese premier Zhu Rongji, Alan Greenspan, Lawrence Summers, Newt Gingrich, Sanford Weill, and the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan. We see Rubin apply it time and again while facing financial crises in Asia, Russia, and Brazil; the federal government shutdown; the rise and fall of the stock market; the challenges of the post-September 11 world; the ongoing struggle over fiscal policy; and many other momentous economic and political events.

With a compelling and candid voice and a sharp eye for detail, Rubin portrays the daily life of the White House-confronting matters both mighty and mundane--as astutely as he examines the challenges that lie ahead for the nation. Part political memoir, part prescriptive economic analysis, and part personal look at business problems, In an Uncertain World is a deep examination of Washington and Wall Street by a figure who for three decades has been at the center of both worlds.

4 out of 5 stars Good read for people interested in finance and politics........2007-09-02

This book is an interesting read for people who are interested in investing, understanding stock markets and the connection between the politics and markets.

The author talks about his experiences at Goldman Sachs which are mostly about arbitraging transactions and his growth as partner in the company. The interesting reading starts from the time he involved with white house and then as treasury secretary. Rubin has explained understandably how the politics play role in managing the financial markets around the globalized world during turmoils in different countries. And also the author talks his views on rise and fall of stock market and the role of developed countries in helping other countries to grow economically. This book gives you good understanding of how the Treasury, Federal Bank and different departments of US Government are involved in the decision making of different policies related to economy in US and in other countries.

In this era of globalization and having all the markets are so interlinked, if you wonder how the different governments and countries react to the any financial turmoil in a particular country, then this book is worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars The lives some lead.......2007-04-08

Fascinating look into the life of someone who has experienced the heights of the macroeconomy yet never becomes so accustomed to it that his perspective is undiminished. An outsiders look in to the world of one who is a cold systematic decision maker and his climb and experiences along the way.

Very useful for one who wants a glimpse into this world, who wants to understand the depths of the world of high finance and the decisions that must be made. A book without much glorification or adulteration from the sometimes cruel, imposing, impersonal truth that is that world.

4 out of 5 stars Alan, Larry and Bob.......2007-04-05

Robert Rubin provides invaluable insights into the workings of the Treasury and the White House. Recollections of the conversations that he had with Alan Greenspan and Larry Summers are particularly revealing. Here are a series of quotes that every financial official or every central banker should use as a reference:

                                      - On central bank independence: "As the longest-serving Federal Reserve chairman in history, William McChesney Martin, famously said, the Fed chairman is the fellow who takes the punch bowl away just when the party is getting going. That's why the chairman should have a fixed term, which he does, rather than serving at the pleasure of the President. This helps insulate him from political pressure."

                                      - On democratic accountability and the mastery with which Alan Greenspan testified before Congress: "That's an interesting observation you make, Senator, about the earth being flat," Alan would say. "If I might, let me rephrase the question." Alan would then ask himself a completely different question and answer it with such complexity and finely calibrated nuance that the questioner faced a choice between nodding intelligently and acknowledging his own confusion. Alan would then ask the House member or senator, "Does that respond to your question?" And the interrogator would invariably say, "Yes, it does."

                                      - On exchange rate policy: "My substantive view was that economic fundamentals determine exchange rate levels over time, and that we should focus our attention on strengthening U.S. economic policy and performance, not on influencing the level of the currency (...) I was skeptical about the efficacy of currency 'interventions' per se--that is, of governments trying to influence the exchange rate of a currency by buying and selling large quantities in the open market. My experience with foreign exchange markets at Goldman Sachs led me to believe that trading flows were simply too vast for such interventions to have more than a momentary effect, except in very unusual circumstances."

                                      - On using calculated ambiguity when commenting on market trends: "For example, my saying 'A strong dollar is in our national interest, and we have a strong dollar for some time now' created great excitement at a press briefing, as it was construed to mean that we wouldn't mind seeing the dollar remain strong but soften somewhat."

                                      - On financial innovation and systemic risk: "Larry Summers characterized my concerns about derivatives as a preference for playing tennis with wooden rackets--as opposed to the more powerful graphite and titanium ones used today. Perhaps, but I would still reduce the leverage allowed on derivatives substantially."

5 out of 5 stars The creator of Rubinomics.......2006-12-19

Robert Rubin's tenure as Treasury Secretary of US coincided with one of the largest economic expansions in its history. This autobiography is probably the best by any public figure in recent times. Some of the episodes like the one on how the US establishment dealt with Mexican economic crisis are very-well written.

The only negative about the book is that Rubin tries to be nice to everyone and does not make public his stand on some of the more controversial issues of recent times.

5 out of 5 stars If Push Comes to Shove, Will Robert Rubin Become a Republican?.......2006-06-08

Robert Rubin is a cultural liberal. He even mentions reading Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac during his formative years. His coauthor Jacob Weisberg is associated with the slightly left of center website Slate.com. Regrettably, like many American Jews he simplistically seems to gravitate towards a knee jerk affiliation with the Democratic Party. He was born during the disgraceful era when anti-Semitic "gentleman's agreement" social polices were often the norm. I doubt if he ever gave serious consideration to joining the GOP. Jews were simply suppose to be existentially committed Democrats. Whatever, Rubin is very bright guy who clearly understands the value of free markets. He does have some disagreements with various Republican economic policies concerning taxes and balanced budgets. Nonetheless, Robert Rubin is not a Daily Kos populist style Democrat. In other words, Clinton's former Secretary of the Treasury is unlikely to rebuke Wal-Mart anytime in the near future.

I highly recommend this wonderful book for those who wish to understand the irreconcilable differences severely damaging today's Democratic Party. The Daily Kos crowd considers Robert Rubin to be a sellout to the international business community. The old Clinton coalition is still powerful. Nonetheless, the radical leftists are now "mainstream" and possess the veto power over the Democrats' selection of their presidential candidate. What is going to happen in 2008? Will Robert Rubin remain on the sidelines---or will he reluctantly even join the Republican Party? Do yourself a favor. First of all read In An Uncertain World. Afterwards, you must force yourself to read the vastly inferior Crashing the Gate by Jerome Armstrong and Markos Moulitsas Zuniga (the Daily Kos). This will likely make you sick to your stomach if you are a Democrat. It should make Republican loyalists like myself jump with glee. Yup, in 2008 the Democrats will have to contend with the Daily Kos faction attempting to marginalize Robert Rubin and his buddies. If nothing else, this struggle to the political death will be entertaining.

Although numerous studies of medieval women and a number of biographies of medieval queens and noblewomen have appeared in recent years, comparatively few studies have sought to combine biographical and prosopographical approaches in order to develop portraits of specific women in order to highlight different life experiences of medieval women. The individual chapters can be read as separate histories of their specific subjects as well as case studies which together provide a coherent picture of the medieval English noblewoman.
