Not a useful travel guide.......2005-02-16
Writing about the Greek Islands is not a simple matter of going there, taking some pictures, and drafting a brief description of the place. This is due in part to the unique nature of the Greek Islands, which are a very diverse and complex collection of locations, cultures, landscapes, and even climates. There are significant logistical concerns because getting to some of these islands can be tricky. And there's also the fact that, while some places cater to package tourists and are overrun with people during certain times of the year, others are far more remote and peaceful. Sadly, this book fails to capture any of these important themes, much less convey them in the kind of detail necessary to make a useful travel Guide. People headed for the Greek Islands should do some more research and find a better guide than this one. Your efforts will pay off in the form of a very enjoyable trip if you bring the right tools with you.

Small, quick overview of Athens, Greece.......2005-09-06
This is a nice book for a very brief, compact overview of Athens, Greece. Full-color photographs on almost every page and details about the city's highlights. However, this book is somewhat outdated now, and I don't recommend buying it.

Why offer this great book if it's out of print?!.......2003-11-08
Help! I am heart-broken!! I saw the ad for this book and gushed with joy- as I plan to get married in Santorini and have my honeymoon in Mykonos. I planned on buying this book for my fiance' for a stocking stuffer, only to see it is out of print. Why do you display this book if it is out of print??
Great Greece, Great guide.......2000-04-06
I used this book to plan a honeymoon, and it was very helpful. Because this book focuses on only two islands, you don't get stuck carrying around information on places you don't plan to see. The content is comprehensive and useful. It gives a lot cultural information, which is great, and the where to stay/where to eat information is more detailed than broader Island books.

Book Description
This collection of 42 drawings, never previously published together, gives new insight into Constable's technical and emotional approach into his work.
With the help of copious comparative illustrations and exhaustively detailed research drawn from numerous contemporary sources, the author builds up a portrait of the artist, his background and family life.
The luscious quality of Constable's painting typifies an idealized image of the English countryside in the 18th centruy. Such familiar paintings as Greenham Lock and Flatford Mill were not captured in spontaneous bursts, but were committed to canvas only after numerous working-drawings and oil sketches had been completed.
This is the first full-length study of the subject, presenting much hitherto unpublished material and offering a balanced and pertinent assessment of Constable and his work.

Replete with a "cat wisdom".......2003-08-09
The Cat's Meow: Feline Answers To Life's Big Questions by journalist and author Bill Zimmerman is dedicated to showcasing the daily life of the cat. From stretching out in the sun, to demonstrating feline independence, to disappearing for a couple of hours each day, to pouncing with passion on what is wanted, The Cat's Meow is replete with a "cat wisdom" that would do their human companions a lot of good to emulate! Zimmerman's delightful and perceptive text is superbly illustrated throughout with the artwork of Tom Bloom. Also very highly recommended is Zimmerman and Bloom's companion volume: The God's Bark: Simple Truths From Wise Pets (157223685X, $$$)

Good basic information.......2001-10-28
This book was used by my plant propagation teacher while I was at the university. It explains the basic principles of plant propagation in detail. All the information is back-up by scientific data. Very good for the professional grower or a plant science student; not very appropriate for the common gardener.
Plant propagation-Hartmann.......2000-03-22
A very informative book with many examples of plant species and their specific propagation requirements. Very detailed but also useful for the beginning propagationist. Great chapters on tissue culture.
So good, so naughty!.......1999-10-24
For fans of plant propogation, this is a must-read. I read it every night, and I can't get enough of it. Be sure to dog-ear the section about the "stigma fertilizing the stamen." It's hot!

Wonderful!.......2006-02-03
My Name is Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz is written by Monica Brown and illustrated by Rafael Lopez. The book is the recipient of a Pura Belpre' Illustrator Honor Award for outstanding work that portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
The exciting and inspirational life of beloved Cuban-born salsa queen, Celia Cruz, is celebrated in the bilingual book My Name is Celia Me Llamo Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz.
Celia was born in Havana to a large family where their lives were intertwined and music was an important part of everyday life. Celia's papa wanted her to become a teacher but music filled her soul with happiness. She was encouraged by a teacher to "go out into the world and sing...." Celia experienced prejudice and fled her beloved country Cuba when the revolution began. From Cuba, Celia traveled the world sharing her love of music with the world.
Rafael Lopez' illustrations are vibrant, fluid combinations of color that beg to be studied. The scenes fill the page and stir emotions as you read the story and live it through his drawings.
Armchair Interviews says: My Name is Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz is a beautiful and educational addition to any child's library. We highly recommend it.
A bright and energetic picturebook .......2005-04-12
The debut title in Rising Moon's "Luna Rising" series of bilingual Latino storybook-biography series for young readers, My Name Is Celia: The Life Of Celia Cruz/Me llamo Celia: La vida de Celia Cruz is written by Monica Brown and colorfully illustrated by Rafael Lopez honoring Cuban-born salsa queen Celia Cruz. Tracing her life from her early childhood in Havana to her musical achievement and worldwide fame, My Name Is Celia tells her story in rhythmic verse, and the artwork practically leaps off the page from sheer enthusiasm. A bright and energetic picturebook that is just plain fun to read aloud.
Book Description
For the first time in her own words comes the personal story of a life filled with heartbreaking setback and triumph, from one of the most celebrated talents the world has ever known.
After Celia Cruz passed away on July 17, 2003, more than a half million people stood in line for hours in order to pay their respects, in both Miami and New York. Millions more paid tribute to her, holding impromptu memorials in living rooms and crowded street festivals throughout the world.
Filled with the sound of her unmistakable voice, as fans played the songs that she will forever be remembered for, the Queen of Salsa's passing was marked with the same celebratory fervor Celia Cruz emulated throughout her life and career; a career that spanned the entire latter half of the twentieth century.
Yet Celia Cruz's life had been largely mired in rumor and speculation. When she was alive, Celia Cruz never granted anyone total access to her life story and photo archive. Finally, comes a book that chronicles her own story, in her own words.
From her modest childhood in Cuba to her exile years in Mexico to her remarkable career and life in America, Celia was a woman of contrasts. Her flamboyant costumes contrasted with her simple and straightforward demeanor. She was open and accessible to her fans, but staunchly private about her personal life. She was uninhibited without decadence, honest without offense, confident but not arrogant, and generous without fault. Yet above all, Celia was authentic, and it was this authenticity that resonated so deeply with her public.
Based on more than five hundred hours of taped interviews recorded just months before her death, Celia includes never-before-published personal photos and anecdotes, letting fans glimpse a life that, while lived in the full view of the public, had remained largely private.
Celia celebrates the soul of a life blessed with talent -- strengthened by an unquestioned work ethic as well as an unwavering faith in God and humanity -- in these, her final words to the public she adored, and who equally loved her back.
Customer Reviews:
Celia: My Life.......2006-03-25
Give's a new insight of the love she had for Cuba, her family, and the music she was so proud to perform.
The Nightingale in Exile.......2005-01-28
This is an enjoyable memoir from the great Cuban singer Celia Cruz, reminiscing on her long life of musical creativity and success. She came of age in the rich Afro/Latin/Caribbean musical scene of pre-Castro Cuba, but then had to flee her homeland, never to return, after the dictator took control and ruthlessly suppressed his people's vibrant and colorful homegrown culture. For some reason Celia never hit it big with mainstream American audiences, but she was huge in the Latin community, and hundreds of thousands of fans mourned her passing in 2003. This book is written mostly in the form of positive reminiscences on friends, faith, and successes. There is nothing wrong with that in the slightest, but I can't quite give this book a perfect rating because of some missed opportunities. Celia's life offers many rich lessons on having to flee one's home into exile, and continuing to work for one's people through success in the outside world. Celia has many very wise and compelling things to say about Castro, the suffering of her people, life in exile, and the issues faced by black and Latin women in music. Unfortunately, Celia's experienced and heartfelt remarks on these matters usually appear for only a paragraph or two, and then it's back to the joyful reminiscing. But even though some golden opportunities for real insight are lost, this is still a great story about the life of an outstanding talent and personality. [~doomsdayer520~]
Essential addition.......2004-11-17
Anticipate an autobiography which is filled with depth, from the ups and downs of Cruz's life to her musical successes and few failures: CELIA: MY LIFE is an essential library addition considering how many myths and rumors abound about Cruz's life.
The Queen of Salsa........2004-11-05
The explosion of Latin music in America did not start with the likes of Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez or even Gloria Estefan. No, the introduction of the pulsating, hypnotic, rhythmic beats of Latin America was started over forty years ago and owes its unveiling in part to the powerful and soulful voice of Celia Cruz. Written by the diva herself, CELIA: MY LIFE AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY is a sentimental celebration of a musical journey that spanned more than half a century.
Born of African descent in Havana, Cuba to a loving family of humble means, music was always a part of Celia's life from the first time her mother sung her a Spanish lullaby. Growing up, Celia was enthralled with the beautiful fusion of the Afro-Cuban music that was drenched within the island's culture. Cuba's musical landscape was quite eclectic and she was captivated by the varied musical styles that swept her homeland. She was influenced by everything, from salsa to samba. Acknowledged by family, friends and neighbors as having a glorious voice, Celia was encouraged to share her gifts with the world. Persuaded by a cousin to enter talent shows, as a teen she began wowing local audiences with her talent. It was just a short time before she became the toast of Cuba.
With the blessing of her friends and family except her father, who wanted her to pursue a more "respectable" profession, Celia began pursuing music. She began perfecting her skills by working the various nightclubs and musical revues in Cuba. It is through Celia's eyes that we are given a front row view of the beautiful and sultry nightclubs that were once part of Cuba's night life. The reader is given a rare look on and behind stage from Celia as she allows us to experience the exhilarating thrill of her performances. Through Celia's narration we are also given a bird's eye view of the changing politics of Cuba and the rise of Fidel Castro. She frankly discusses how she witnessed the political turmoil that nearly tore her homeland apart and ushered in a dictator. Disenchanted with the political changes in Cuba, with a heavy heart Celia decided to escape from the communist nation; sadly she left all she knew and loved behind. Upset and humiliated that one of the nation's most celebrated entertainers had defected from his country Fidel Castro forbade Celia from ever stepping foot on Cuba's soil again.
Despite being banished from her homeland and a few personal and professional setbacks, CELIA: MY LIFE AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY is a joyful testimony of a legendary singer's triumphs in life and within the music industry. Celia Cruz recently passed on leaving behind a catalog of wonderful music that will continue to be enjoyed by her legions of fans for years to come. Her voice will forever inspire and invite future generations to celebrate and treasure the pulsating beats of Latin music.

An Inspiration.......2004-10-21
Celia Cruz rose from modest circumstances to achieve worldwide fame as an amazingly talented singer and in this book she relays her life story with an incredible amount of modesty considering her accomplishments. She radiates the same warmth in her written words that she had in her music. There are individuals that are gifted not only with talent but with an inner beauty and appreciation of life that sets them apart. (Louis Armstrong is another example) Celia Cruz was certainly one of those people and this book reveals her as a wonderful person as well as a wonderful singer. She was blessed with a wonderful life but she in turn blessed those who were lucky enough to know her and those who have enjoyed her music for all these years. I once saw Celia Cruz in a NY airport and I regret not saying hello and saying something to her about how great she was but frankly I was a bit overwhelmed by her being there. She looked like a very happy person and that is the impression this book will leave you with.
Book Description
Inspiration for Girls on the Threshold of Change
"Before I go to sleep each night
Before I turn off every light
Let me put away my fears
Let me brush away the tears"
The heartfelt prayers in this luminous volume were originally written for the comfort and inspiration of a twelve-year-old girl named Julia. The author of these prayers is Julia's mother, who wrote them because she was troubled that she and her daughter no longer talked as much as they used to. So each night, she left a verse on Julia's pillow. Julia shared them with her younger sister and with her friends, and the prayers moved outward in ever-widening circles.
Now everyone can enjoy and meditate upon these simple supplications, whose words, feelings, and perspective are those of a girl growing into womanhood. Nearly one hundred and fifty prayers encourage girls to look inward for the strength to heal hurts, calm fears, and reconcile with family and friends. They present the values of self-reliance and confidence, celebrating the gift of life and the unique pleasure and challenges of being a girl. Each prayer is a loving act of faith, and together they provide a safe and private space in which a girl can simply be and grow.

Spiritual Lift.......2004-12-31
My mom gave me this book a couple of years ago, and I just stuck it in my closet. Recently I was cleaning out my room and uncovered this book. I started reading the prayers inside. I looked for prayers that connected to my everyday life and that I could relate to. I typed up my favorite prayers on my computer, printed it out, and put it by my bed. Every night I read the prayers. One night, I was feeling lonely. I was reading through the prayers and I came across one that went like this:
I need someone to comfort me
To tell me it's okay
To stroke my hair
And kiss my cheek
To hold me tight when I feel weak
To make hurt go away.
I need someone to care for me
Someone who's always there
To take my hand
And wipe my tears
To stand on guard against my fears
To help when life's unfair.
I trust in God's great[...]love [...] for me
When I am all alone
To hear my cry
And fill my heart
With faith that I can do my part
And manage on my own.
I read it over and over, sobbing the whole time. About the fifteenth time, I was reading it and I just stopped. Something happened and I stopped crying. I just read it over again, this time without crying, and laid down in my bed. I felt so much better. I don't know what happened, but something about the prayers made me feel better.
These prayers have changed the way I feel spiritually. They have also given me a greater belief in God. This book provided me with the words I needed to get by. I highly reccommend trying it.
A great gift for the young lady in your life!.......2002-06-27
Celia Straus wrote this snappy little book for her daughters, and it shows a mother's love. Each page contains a small "prayer" written for a teenage girl, all of them dealing with courage and becoming (at least that's how a father sees it :-). All of them are written in enchanting verse, though not all of them are necessarily directed towards God. For example, on page 103, there is "I am not helpless/I am not weak/I will not shatter/I will not weep/I stand alone/Yet I stand strong/I can be me/Without being wrong."
Overall, I found this to be a wonderful little book, a great gift for the young lady in your life!
A Real Source of Comfort and Encouragement for Girls.......2001-05-17
I purchased this book for 12 and 10 year old daughters. I thought that perhaps we could read a prayer each night as a devotion and that it would give us an opportunity to talk about issues in their lives. It has done that and more. My oldest daughter now refers to it frequently, whenever she needs a lift or a little extra encouragement. I also purchased the sequel and I rate it equally well. I have given this book as gifts to my daughter's friends for their 13th birthday, and they have all loved it.
Simplistic in style but a delite to read.......2000-07-08
When I first saw this book, I passed it by since I am the mom of two boys. The next time I saw it, I was looking for a gift for a friend with three teenage daughters.(Her copy is well worn and she's buying extra's to give as gifts) Thumbing thru it, I returned to buy a copy for myself. "Dreams on Your Pillow" is inspirirational for any parent of teens and can be applied to boys, also, as they take the journey to manhood.
This is a book of poetry for your daughter's inner self........2000-06-20
I just bought this book for my daughter as a graduation present and she and I have both already read all the poems in it. Now it stays on her pillow! I don't know why these simple poems connect so instantly to the soul, but they seem to touch a cord inside. My daughter, who is 12, has thanked me more for this book than anything I have given her in years. For any girl who is going through an identity crisis, this book is a great help.

His Finest Hour?.......2006-10-06
By December 1916, the British Empire found itself in its most dire situation yet; the war, which should have been short, lengthened; Casualties mounted, its allies wavered, and its leadership seemed questionable.
Parliament, voting their disapproval of the conduct of the war, went to replace Herbert Henry Asquith. His replacement as head of the coalition government was the young secretary of War, the most charismatic of the Pre-War politicians - David Lloyd George.
"Lloyd George: War Leader 1916-1918", is the forth and final volume of John Grigg's biography of the "Welsh Wizard". I've read the penultimate book ("From Peace to War 1912-1916), and felt it was a mixed bag - a story of a fascinating figure, but not particularly well told.
This volume, published posthumously, is a marked improvement. The main reason is that as Prime Minister, Lloyd George's scope was wider. In reading about him now, we encounter not only his day to day struggles, but the vast arena of international relations during what Churchill called "The World Crisis". The Modern World was born, so to speak, in the trenches of the Great War, and we get a front seat view of the emergence of Communist Russia, the destruction of the Grand European Empires, the unraveling of the Middle East, and the rise of American Hegemony.
Yet the books readability suffers from Grigg's insistence of inflicting on us every personal struggle, every routine appointment, every minor speech and any mundane maladies of his hero. The blow by blow account of his Prime Ministry may conceivably be of interest for the Specialist; For the General reader, it is tiresome and somewhat incoherent.
There several big questions about the Lloyd George Premiership: What was his role in the winning of the war? How much responsibility did he have for the ultimate collapse of the British Empire, and particularly for the loss of Ireland? And was he responsible for the (self?) destruction of the Liberal party?
In addition, Lloyd George's private life is something of a wonder; He had lived in a de facto bigamous arrangement, sharing his life with his wife Margaret, and with his much younger secretary, Frances Stevenson. In his late life and after his death the "official" Lloyd George clan understandably resented and loathed Stevenson and her daughter from Lloyd George; But in war time, the relationship had been much more ambiguous. There are hints of a story that would put "Dallas" to shame, but Grigg avoids it.
Indeed, Grigg only addresses the first of these issues: Lloyd George as a Prime Minister and War Leader. Although he probably would not have admitted it, Lloyd George emerges from his account as a remarkably un-remarkable premier. The energetic Minister of Munitions is all but gone; Instead, Lloyd George seemed to have replayed his role as secretary of War - a more or less figurehead, while the war is run by the Generals.
As an "Easterner", the military strategy pursued by Britain in 1917 was almost the exact opposite of the one Lloyd George advocated. Although the British did conquer (Liberate?) Palestine by the end of the year, the massive effort was on a great, costly and futile offence on the Western Front - the 3rd Ypres, better known for its ultimate futile battle, Passchendaele.
Not only did Lloyd George oppose the attack, he was supported in his opposition by his main coalition partner, Conservative MP Andrew Bonar Law, who doubled as Chancellor of the Ex-Chequer and member of the War Cabinet. But the offence was the Apple of the Douglas Haig's eye, and Haig, the Commander of Chief of the British Expeditionary Force, won the day.
For better or worse, the great men (usually) who led their countries to through fierce wars took responsibility for the military situation. Lincoln and Churchill both sacked Generals left and right. But Lloyd George, in his own words, considered it "too great a responsibility [for the Civilian Leadership] to take the strategy of the war out if the hands of their military advisors" (p. 167). He felt unable to either sack Haig or outmaneuver him; Instead, Haig outmaneuvered the Prime Minister, sacrificing his underlings for his mistakes and remaining unscathed in Command throughout the war.
Although Lloyd George's premiership was not without its triumphs (particularly the achievement, in 1918, of a semi-united command, something he has labored on from the beginning), the ultimate conclusion I got from the volume was that even though George's strategic sense was correct, his political acumen failed him in reasserting his vision. Lloyd George clearly contributed to Victory, but it was not, in the end, His Finest Hour.

"Grip, Resolution, and Prompt readiness":Lloyd George in War.......2005-03-10
The British political world at the outbreak of the First World War was populated with remarkable personalities: Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith, Conservative leader Andrew Bonar Law, Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, economist John Maynard Keynes, and of course, about and beyond anyone else, Winston Churchill. First among equal in the cabinet, "a team of ministers as gifted as any in British history" as John Grigg writes (p. 471), was Chancellor of the Exchequer, and future secretary of war and Prime Minister, David Lloyd George.
The third volume of John Grigg's life of David Lloyd George, subtitled 'From Peace to War', begins with his pre war campaigns for agrarian reforms and labor settlements. By far the dullest parts of the book, the pre-war descriptions dwell upon what is by now utterly trivial political controversies. Here and later Grigg seems to assume his reader has read his previous volumes, or at least is very much familiar with the British political situation in the early 20th century. For this reader at least, this was not the case, and at times I felt at the dark.
Most interesting of the pre-war chapters is the one dedicated to Lloyd George's personal life and particularly to his affair with Frances Stevenson, his secretary, who was young enough to have been his daughter. Lloyd George, though he needed and was much in love with his mistress, was unwilling to risk his political career by marrying her, and even went to the length of considering marrying her to a young protégé of his (pp. 398-401). Stevenson agreed to the illicit relationship with Lloyd George, at least partly because, as his secretary, she had unique access to the political world. Thus, Grigg writes that the marriage scheme "designed to protect his [Lloyd George's] career" may have failed "partly because she [Stevenson] sensed it as a threat to hers" (p. 400).
As the Great War approached, heralding the end of the Victorian world, Lloyd George and John Grigg's narrative rose to the top of their game. As Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lloyd George was already intimately involved in the production of munitions, and he would soon become Minister of Munitions, making an invaluable contribution to the war effort. As a military strategist, Lloyd George was an "Easterner" rather than a "Westerner"; he believed in making a strong engagement in the Balkans rather than throwing away manpower and resources in pointless offences such as the Somme. Upon becoming Secretary of War, Lloyd George found himself as something of a figurehead in a department ran by the generals, pursuing a course he considered ill-advised, and hardly able to do much about it.
Besides his Ministerial duties, Lloyd George also played a central role in the government's temperance campaign, (although like most of the Cabinet but unlike the King, he refused to lead by example abstention pp. 230-233), in the campaign for better labor relations, and in the political maneuverings, resulting first in a coalition government, and later in the fall of Asquith's government.
John Grigg clearly admires Lloyd George, but he can be scathing in his criticism of his subject's failures, petty hypoacidity and various misjudgments. He is particularly critical of Lloyd George's abandonment of a settlement reached with the Irish leadership following the 1915 Easter Uprising. The agreement, which would have granted home rule to Ireland, was killed by Conservative MPs; thus passed what Grigg judges to have been the last chance for a British Ireland.
Some biographers use their subject for wide range commentary on the character's time and world (Fehrenbacher's brilliant book on Lincoln in the 1850s is a prime example), but John Grigg does not. The focus is squarely on Lloyd George, and vital events are discussed only in so far as they affect him. Grigg hardly discusses the reason the war broke, or the reason the United Kingdom went into it. He writes that the UK didn't go to war for Belgium's sake, and that "her own survival" was at stake at the war (pp. 170-171). But what threat did Imperial Germany constitute to Britain, and was the threat grave enough to justify the millions of dead that the war entailed? Some historians (such as Niall Fergusson) answer in the negative, but Grigg hardly comes to grip with the question. Nor, it is worth pointing out, does his Lloyd George.
In 'A Peace to End All Peace' David Fromkin's brilliant narrative of the Middle East in the second decade of the century, a rather different Lloyd George emerges - a bona fide British Imperialist, not the semi "American business man" reflected in the interview with US Journalist Roy Howard (p. 429). That Lloyd George fought for the aggrandizement of the Empire - but it is hard to spot him in Grigg's account.
The book ends with the fall of the Asquith government and the formation of the Lloyd George administration. Asquith, though an extremely able politician, was ineffective as war leader. As the war lengthened and the slaughter brought no tangible results, demands for change intensified. Asquith rejected a compromise which would have given Lloyd George de facto control of the war effort, and thus was forced to resign. When he refused also to serve under Balfour or Andrew Bonar Law, Lloyd George's prime ministry was assured.
For all its flaws, John Grigg's biography tells the story of a great man in dire times, and his story is gripping. Although I have no wish to go back to the earlier volumes, I'm sure I will read Grigg's final volume, published posthumously: Lloyd George, War Leader 1916-1918.
