5 out of 5 stars Intelligent and Comprehensive.......2005-04-07

I was totally unfamiliar with New Hampshire and what it had to offfer me as a visiter and I found this guide to be an engaging way to learn about the state. Each part of the state has different things to offer, and Mr. Binder's style of writing was both intelligent and witty and never condensended. It's concise yet comprehensive, lacking the excess verbage some guides include to "fill a place out." If you like to "get a sense of place" before you visit it, this book delivers the state of New Hampshire.

    5 out of 5 stars A Profound Story.......2004-01-13

Crucial to the understanding of contemporary American social-culture, and supplementary and cleansing, perhaps, for those concientiously trying to address our society's incongruities. Sanders' allows himself the freedom to reference and elaborate on (and better yet storytell) obscure or arcane information without abandoning the requisite of factual historical development; a technique fitting for an enterprise as delicate as sourcing racism as we know it. Speculative and never presumptuious, he weaves especial elements of recent western history around a mundane ambition that seeks a certain truth. Inspired but controlled, and by no means requiring a kind of academic expertise to read--a book with insights of lasting implication.

5 out of 5 stars Lost Tribes... and the Power of Myth.......2002-10-16

I read this book twenty years ago when it first came out but its impact was so profound that it left an indelible mark. Every American should read this. The part about the Mayflower and the charter myth of the New Canaan, wherein genocide is made out to be a commandment from God, has shaped U.S. foreign policy ever since. This book, if read in conjunction with Jonathan Kozol's work "The night is dark and i'm far from home", Howard Zinn's "People's History of the United States", and the book in French, "L'Entaille Rouge" should rouse everyone in the U.S. from their deep slumber and help them understand something crucial: the New Canaan myth, which found expression in the genocide of the Indians, has shaped their national psyche. The U.S. was born as a haven for the Puritans, and the Puritans were anything but "nice", in fact, to borrow a phrase from the current Puritan in the White House, they were evil. Indulge in a little psychoanalysis and face the dark side in your national character... read this book!

            ASIN: 0774808608

            Book Description

Preserving What Is Valued explores the concept of preserving heritage. It presents the conservation profession's code of ethics and discusses four significant contexts embedded in museum conservation practice: science, professionalization, museum practice, and the relationship between museums and First Nations peoples.

Museum practice regarding handling and preservation of objects has been largely taken as a given, and it can be difficult to see how these activities are politicized. Clavir argues that museum practices are historically grounded and represent values that are not necessarily held by the originators of the objects. She first focuses on conservation and explains the principles and methods conservators practise. She then discusses First Nations people's perspectives on preservation, quoting extensively from interviews done throughout British Columbia, and comparing the British Columbia situation with that in New Zealand.

In the face of cultural repatriation issues, museums are attempting to become more culturally sensitive to the original owners of objects, forming new understandings of the "right ways" of storage and handling of materials. Miriam Clavir's work is important for museum professionals, conservators, those working with First Nations collections in auction houses and galleries, as well as students of sociology and anthropology.

            Book Description

The relationship between American Indians and Europeans on America's frontiers is typically characterized as a series of cultural conflicts and misunderstandings based on a vast gulf of difference. Nancy Shoemaker turns this notion on its head, showing that Indians and Europeans shared common beliefs about their most fundamental realities--land as national territory, government, record-keeping, international alliances, gender, and the human body. Before they even met, Europeans and Indians shared perceptions of a landscape marked by mountains and rivers, a physical world in which the sun rose and set every day, and a human body with its own distinctive shape. They also shared in their ability to make sense of it all and to invent new, abstract ideas based on the tangible and visible experiences of daily life. Focusing on eastern North America up through the end of the Seven Years War, Shoemaker closely reads incidents, letters, and recorded speeches from the Iroquois and Creek confederacies, the Cherokee Nation, and other Native groups alongside British and French sources, paying particular attention to the language used in cross-cultural conversation. Paradoxically, the more American Indians and Europeans came to know each other, the more they came to see each other as different. By the end of the 18th century, Shoemaker argues, they abandoned an initial willingness to recognize in each other a common humanity and instead developed new ideas rooted in the conviction that, by custom and perhaps even by nature, Native Americans and Europeans were peoples fundamentally at odds. In her analysis, Shoemaker reveals the 18th century roots of enduring stereotypes Indians developed about Europeans, as well as stereotypes Europeans created about Indians. This powerful and eloquent interpretation questions long-standing assumptions, revealing the strange likenesses among the inhabitants of colonial North America.

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor Attempt at Indian History.......2006-08-08

Shoemaker tries to sell the idea her book breaks new ground by looking at the ways Indians and Europeans shared similar cultural constructs throughout the 18th century. For instance, both groups used gendered language to call the other "women" as a form of insult. However, Shoemaker's analysis never goes beyond description and the vital concept of change over time is lost in a book too full of description and woefully lacking in critical analysis.

I suggest saving your money and reading Richard White's The Middle Ground, which is a much more nuanced argument about Indians in 18th century North America.

              Book Description

The years between 1922 and 1961, often referred to as the "Dark Ages of Northwest Coast art," have largely been ignored by art historians, and dismissed as a period of artistic decline. Tales of Ghosts compellingly reclaims this era, arguing that it was instead a critical period during which the art played an important role in public discourses on the status of First Nations people in Canadian society.

Hawker's insightful examination focuses on the complex functions that Northwest Coast objects, such as the ubiquitous totem pole, played during the period. He demonstrates how these objects asserted the integrity and meaningfulness of First Nations identities, while simultaneously resisting the intent and effects of assimilation enforced by the Canadian government's denial of land claims, its ban of the potlatch, and its support of assimilationist education.

Those with an interest in First Nations and Canadian history and art history, anthropology, museology, and post-colonial studies will be delighted by the publication of this major contribution to their fields.

Art historian Graham Reynolds, one of the leading experts on the painter John Constable and the author of a number of books on the Constable, including Constable: The Natural Painter and Catalogue of the Constable Collection, has produced a scholarly masterpiece in The Early Paintings and Drawings of John Constable. This two-volume opus includes every known work Constable produced between 1790 and 1816, the period that saw Constable discover his own way of looking at the world and his own approach to rendering it on canvas.

"My Dog's Tale" is largely a journal for your canine, with room for a few photos as well. It has lined pages on which you can record your dog's milestones, such as "Puppy's First Day Home" and "Memorable Firsts".

I would have given "My Dog's Tale" 5 stars - except that the book's author sprinkled little "pointers" throughout the journal. Some pages are completely filled with advice so that they're essentially wasted - my solution was to affix large photos onto these pages and cover up the text completely. Ms. Glantz seems to be confused as to what a "journal" is - it IS a place for the individual to compose personalized entries. It ISN'T a training book. If I had wanted "tips", I would have bought a book on dog training.

Otherwise, "My Dog's Tale" is one of the better companion animal journals I've found. It has cute, appealing sketches and a nice color palate (mostly muted blues). It isn't too "busy", but it's still attractive to look at. The pages are large enough for two standard-sized photos (there are about a dozen pages set aside for pictures, but I ended up putting many more in, over the author's text). It's probably most useful for someone who's just adopted a puppy, as some of the journal entries focus on puppy-specific milestones (e.g., puppy's first...). Many of the entries can be filled in at any stage in your dog's life, though.

The feline version of "My Dog's Tale" is "My Cat's Tale", also by Lorie Glantz. The format is identical.

"My Dog's Tale" is nice journal, but, sadly enough...it COULD have been a GREAT journal!

5 out of 5 stars Fun, insightful, valuable, touching.......2000-11-22

Of all the birthday presents I got last month, this was my favorite! I thought I knew how to take care of a dog -- how hard could it be? Little did I know! The distilled training and medical advice has been really useful -- the book actually teaches you how to raise your dog, instead of just owning it. The book has loads of great tips and techniques that I had never thought of before. Frankie, my puppy, is already so well behaved that my friends are truly impressed. The best thing about the book though are the journal pages. They are a great way to make sure I capture the important moments in my new best friend's life as they happen. I'm definitely buying a few to give to the dog lovers on my Christmas list.

                          5 out of 5 stars A personal landscape book--a garden autobiography.......1999-04-01

This is a book about a woman who truly loves gardening. It is full of pictures of her home and garden--some color, some black and white. She has the wisdom that comes from gardening and solitude.

Her book drew me in immediately. "Stony-Brook Cottage Becomes Mine" in Chapter One. She speaks of getting exactly the property that you want and describes how...."first, put down a sizable advance payment on a house and lot that doesn't quite suit you...then return to your city apartment and read the real estate ads to find a description of a place with a rushing brook...". Ms. Van Pelt Wilson did not even take much note of the house, the brook won her over.

I enjoyed very much seeing how she transformed the home and gardens. She told of her early fervor and how she scaled back some of her early gardens to ground cover.

Her book is beautifully written for gardeners, those who love solitude and nature, and for those who might find themselves alone suddenly, and wonder if there is anything worthy for them left to do in life. It was inspirational to me.

                                  Book Description

Gnnter Koschorrek wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some forty years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow. The author was a keen recruit at initial training and his excitement at the first encounter with the enemy in the Russian Steppe is obvious. The horror and confusion of fighting in the streets of Stalingrad are brought to life by his descriptions of the others in his unit; their differing manners and techniques for dealing with the squalor and death. He is also posted to Romania and Italy, assignments he remembers fondly compared to his time on the Eastern Front. This book stands as a memorial to the huge numbers on both sides who did not survive and is, over five decades later, the fulfillment of a responsibility he feels to honour the memory of those who perished. Gnnter K. Koschorrek was a machine-gunner on the Russian front in WWII. He lives in Germany, having retired from his job as managing director of a sales company.

3 out of 5 stars Poorly written, inaccurate, but is within the norm of many WW2 German memoirs.......2007-05-28

I am fascinated and incensed by every memoir written by German serviceman. Fascinated because I am afforded an opportunity to glimpse into the personal experience of an enemy, but incensed because everyone (at least whom I've read so far) comes across like such a gentleman. For instance, author said that because one Russian soldier was unarmed he did not shoot him. He also said that he couldn't bear seeing his buddy shooting wounded Russians because he thought it was barbaric. Oh, the innocent German soldiers. Where were they in Dachau, Majdanek, Treblinka, Auschwitz, etc etc etc? How about inhumane treatment of Russian POWs or mass murders of Russian population on occupied territories? Did 26 million Russian souls perish in this war just on their own? I guess those who choose to write about their experiences either conveniently forget these parts of the story or are absolute exceptions from the norm. I tend to believe the former.

I have to agree with another reviewer (Jeffrey Thurston) that the author repeatedly names a weapon that Russian soldiers use as Kalashnikov quite incorrectly. The fact that this gun was introduced at least 2 years after the war makes the reading a bit confusing and, well, discredits the story somewhat.

On a side note, I guess the numerous typos should not be the focus of my review, since the book is not written by a "professional" writer. Yet one is left wondering what the editor was doing right before they cleared the final manuscript for printing.

In all, I found accounts of fear that Russian attacks instilled in Germans (at least on some occasions) utmost interesting to read, including calling the T-34 a steel monster (it wasn't a heavy tank by any means). As long as you don't think too much into the details (i.e., nonexistent weapon repeatedly used by Russians, confusing some Russian and Polish words), you'll find this book an OK read.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A riveting memoir.......2007-02-12

I really enjoyed the book. There were a few areas that a good editor could have polished, but overall an enjoyable book. The combat was brutal, but you felt at the end of the book that you were there too. It wasn't written by a war college, or compiled from after action reports. If you want orders of battle or such you will be disappointed, however, if you want to read about the eastern front and what it was like for the regular Wermacht grunts, you will love it. I have had it for over a year, and even now when I am between books, I find myself reading it again.....it never gets old.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best memoir, but certainly worth having. .......2007-01-20

I thought the book was a reasonably well done account of a machine gunner's view of the Russian front. Yes, there are better books, but this one is certainly worth the price, and each one of the veterans' perspectives is different - that's what makes these first-hand accounts so interesting to me. I recommend this one.

3 out of 5 stars A Disappointing, Bland Oral History.......2007-01-09

I am a big fan of WWII history. One of my favorite topics is reading oral histories. However, this was one book which did not live up to its hype.

The author writes about his experiences at the Russian front, experiences which he had transcribe many years earlier. He writes about his long stints at the Russian front, the horrors of warfare, the endless cold and the unending slaughter of his comrades. We also learn that not all Germans and Russians treated each other with disdain.

The major flaw of this book is that the writing style is rather bland. In other words, the author fails to generate any excitement with his writing. I find that the book probably would have been much better with either a ghost writer, or at least, if the text had been written more as a novel. The text comes across as bland, and it never seems to really "grab" you as a reader.

If I had known this beforehand, I probably would not have read the book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully described German war.......2006-09-03

I really enjoyed this book; if you have an interest in WW2 on the Eastern Front this book describes it from a machine-gunner's perspective on the ground, down and dirty. To me the best part of the book was the description of the approaches to Stalingrad- I think what can only be imagined in history books is captured on paper well. You get the feeling of "...Stalingrad's hot breath..." and how eagerness for battle becomes a numbing fight for survival very quickly. The stolidity of the German soldier and his pride in the craftmanship of war come across clearly. You really get a sense of how it must have felt to win constantly at a tactical level but still be retreating constantly- scenes where Russian tanks roll past retreating columns of Germans to reach a battle ahead permeate the middle part of the book. There are many beautifully depicted battle scenes throughout and it goes on right to the end- truth really can be as amazing as fiction. The only thing which made me a bit skeptical was the author's firm belief (denial?) that it was the Russians who massacred all those people in villages they passed through on their retreat. I think after a couple of years on the Russian Front he must have had a pretty good idea of the nature of German occupation but I think this is a common theme in many war autobiographies from all sides- civilians seemed to have just up and died on their own! Lastly, throughout the book Russian soldiers use Kalashnikovs- I think PPSh-41's are what he means.
