Book Description
In early May 1864 Union armies left their winter encampment near Chattanooga, Tennessee, and began a march to Atlanta. Four months lateron September 3William T. Sherman wired Abraham Lincoln, "Atlanta is ours, and fairly won!" The fall of Atlanta was not just one more Union victory. It was pivotal to the outcome of the entire Civil War and also to Lincoln's reelection. With the fall of Atlanta, Confederate morale plummeted. The South's most significant manufacturing center was destroyed, and its primary railroad connections were cut. The destruction of Atlanta was not just a Union victory over one city, but a key to the end of the war. Fields of Glory traces the story of the campaign from the Tennessee border through the heart of Georgia to Jonesboro. Included is a series of driving tours that enable readers to see firsthand the battlefields and important sites of the campaign. Also included are more than 85 illustrations, 25 original maps, a lively history of! the campaign, fascinating tours of the battlefields, articles on military strategy, biographies of generals, the chronology of key battles and important events, sources for additional travel information, a bibliography, and an index. "In General Sherman's mind," Jim Miles explains, "before the Civil War could be brought to a victorious conclusion, Atlanta had to be destroyed and the Confederacy denied its products. From that day, Atlanta was a doomed city."

The meticulously detailed text traces the path of the war.......2002-11-14
Now in its second edition and part of the outstanding Cumberland House "Civil War Explorer" series, Fields Of Glory by American Civil War expert Jim Miles is an informed and informative study and tour guide of the American Civil War in the west, culminating with the Atlanta campaign of 1864. The meticulously detailed text traces the path of the war, chronicles its skirmishes and battles, and provides detailed directions for a self-guided driving tour that follows the path of history. Black and white photographs illustrate this superbly presented and highly recommended travel resource for an unforgettable journey that recounts the life-and-death saga of nearly a hundred and fifty years ago.
An excellent way to follow Sherman's campaign to Atlanta.......2002-10-27
Finding Civil War related sites in North Georgia is no mean feat, but Miles' book really helps. I was able to see the majority of the most important sites in the Atlanta Campaign on a two day whirlwind car tour by following the route laid out by Fields of Glory. (Although a faithful and through tour following the book would have taken several days at least.) The interpretive background provided about each stop is extremely valuable, and I'm sure many of the sites I visited are not the sort of thing the casual Civil War tourist would ever find unaided. Also, the chapters describing the campaign history are very well written and provide just the right amount of detail. I did find that the (modern) maps in the book were somewhat less than adequate and, in many cases, there are no maps provided for some hard-to-find locations. I spent several hours before my trip printing off online street maps of each of the destinations. Without this prepration I probably would have gotten lost and would have seen a lot less. But, on balance, the book was exactly what I was looking for. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to tour the sites related to the Atlanta Campaign.

Book Description
Founded in 1893, Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History initially held items from the World's Columbian Exposition. Today the Museum houses more than 20 million objects, from Egyptian mummies and Chinese jade carvings to Tyrannosaurus rex bones and Martian meteorites.
This lively and beautifully illustrated guidebook provides an excellent starting point from which to explore the Museum, yet holds plenty of surprises for the veteran museum-goer. For instance, among the sixty objects described in this book is the skeleton of Parasaurolophus cyrtocristatus. Excavated in 1923, this specimen was not really "discovered" until the 1950s, when a visiting scientist realized that it represented a previously unknown species. Other entries relate fascinating archeological mysteries or give behind-the-scenes glimpses into how the Museum's exhibits are created. Each of the sixty objects discussed is keyed to both a floor plan of the Museum and a map of the world.
An excellent gift for visitors to Chicago and a must for anyone planning to tour this world-class museum.
Book Description
The first and only book to reveal when, where, and how to catch the amazing false albacore.
The false albacore is a strong and lightning-fast member of the tuna family that has been discovered by the saltwater flyfishing world as one of the most challenging species to target. These fish are so fast and so strong for their weight that they are known to break fishermen's hearts along with their expensive fly rods. False Albacore covers the life history, biology, migratory patterns, and feeding habits of this great fish, as well as the tackle and techniques that are necessary to catch them.
These fast-moving beauties migrate down the eastern coastline from Massachusetts to Florida each fall. The recognized mecca for pursuing them is North Carolina, where the greatest fly fishermen from around the world congregate to take part in the fall blitz. Tom Gilmore has spent years learning their tricks, as well as those of the guides that pursue them. He has uncovered hot spots ranging from Massachusetts to as yet undiscovered waters in Florida. False Albacore is the first and only book dedicated exclusively to the pursuit of this exciting species. 30 black & white photographs, 12 color photographs, 6 maps, index.
False albacore is the hottest fish in the fly fishing world. Many lifetime fly fishermen are only now discovering the existence of this fish and are pursuing them for the first time.
False Albacore is the first and only book-length treatment of the subject.
Tom Gilmore is a well-known conservationist and regional speaker.
Customer Reviews:
Reel-Time's Review of "False Albacore".......2003-12-30
Tom Gilmore has caught the essence of angling for these inedible rocket-fish in his well-crafted book on the species, False Albacore , devoting more than 200 pages to a fishery that has emerged as the top Atlantic coast challenge. Fast, powerful, and maddening to catch, false albacore represent an addiction that surpasses the romance of the striped bass, the bulldoggedness of the bluefish, or the tropical hunt of the bonefish with its manic habits, its pulse quickening attacks, and its well-deserved reputation for trashing gear and making otherwise sane fishermen somewhat nutty.
Gilmore, who is president and CEO of the New Jersey Audubon Society, is a good writer who gets right down to business, and wastes little time in delving into the details of what tackle, flies, and technique is needed to nail an albie on the fly rod. While the book assumes some fly fishing experience, and doesn't attempt to teach too many basics, it is a perfect starting point for a beginning and intermediate saltwater angler looking to diversify his or her catch list from the usual stripers and blues to something with an exotic punch.
The book is well illustrated, includes an excellent set of color photographs of top fly patterns as tied by their originators, and is divided between a comprehensive how-to section in the first-halt and a guide to false albacore hot spots from Massachusetts to Florida. Gilmore interviewed more than 50 guides and other experts in researching False Albacore , collecting the kind of hard won experience from a broad group that yields some nuggets and tricks that even the most experienced false albacore angler can appreciate.
Having a bit of a false albacore "problem" myself, and having devoted far too many hours and tanks of gas in pursuit of the fish, I consider myself a capable, if not experienced fisherman when it comes to albies. Yet on multiple occasions throughout the book I found myself taking note of some insights that while intuitively I may have picked up on the water, I had never really consciously considered until reading Gilmore.
As any one can attest, finding then casting, and finally hooking and landing a false albacore can seem like an extremely daunting prospect at first. Gilmore cuts away at a lot of the uncertainty by emphasizing tide, structure, the prevalent baitfish, small patterns over large, slow sinking lines over floaters (in most circumstances), blind casting, and preparation. With the added bonus of some specific directions to some well-known albacore spots, this is an essential book for someone setting out to find a tiny tuna for the first time.

Bent rods and screaming reels!.......2003-04-30
For Many years Tom Gilmore has been a well respected authority on chasing and landing Northeast species on a flyrod. His
public seminars for fishing clubs throughout the east often pack a full house to Enlightened Longrodders.
His Knowledge and Practical Expierience come through in this well researched book, making this comprehensive guide perfectly clear to fishermen of all skill levels who read it.
This book was extremely helpful offering all pertinent information from tackle to seasonal Hotspots. If you are not yet an Albie angler read this book and you'll soon be!
Save your money and invest in Crease Flies!.......2003-01-21
Although Albies have gotten little space in other more general Northeast Fishing Classics, like Inshore Fly Fishing and Fly Rodding the Coast, I'm not sure that we have enough information about our quarry for an entire book dedicated to the hottest long rod gamefish. I would have said the same about Dick Brown's Fly Fishing for Bonefish and Lou Tabory's Stripers on the Fly, but they were much more comprehensive and the techniques have been develped for many years. Fishing for Albies is a very new game. The Deceiver was on a postage stamp before people started targeting Albies with a long rod.
If you've caught one Albie, most of this book won't be that helpful. Most of Gilmore's insights are anecdotal, based solely on his experience and guide interviews, but it's not his fault. What scientist would be interested in studying a "trash" fish? The locale guide and guide directory will save you a lot of research time. One thing to note is that Montauk and Harkers are great Albie fisheries, but on a weekends are a mess with boats everywhere. You can easily hook someone in another boat with your back cast.
I'd also would have loved to see more photos of smiling anglers with a fish. I look forward to the second edition with more substance. Despite the it's flaws, this book will probably become a classic.
Book Description
The Mammoth Book of Eyewitness Ancient Rome is the history of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire in the words of those who saw it firsthand. Never before in such detail has there been a history of this great and influential civilization that continues to mark the landscape (the Colosseum, the Roman roads, the aqueduct at Nimes), our language, our calendar (“July” for Julius Caesar), our laws, our traditions (carrying a bride across the threshold), and our very thoughts. With all the gossip of I, Claudius and the excitement of Gladiator (but none of the historical inaccuracy), The Mammoth Book of Eyewitness Ancient Rome is a unique tour into the most important civilization in the West.
Customer Reviews:
Good companion to Gibbons.......2007-03-27
I really enjoyed this book because it wasn't just a bunch of impersonal historical facts piled into one book. These are writings and historical accounts from those who were present at the time the history was being made. This book gives a unique perspective about the Roman Empire that most history books don't.
A unique and thorough collection of rare documents!.......2006-05-22
"The Mammoth Book of Eyewitness Ancient Rome: The History of the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire in the Words of Those Who Were There" (whew!) is a 500+ page "phone book" of authentic Roman documents. The book is truly as "mammoth" as you would expect from a work with twenty-six words in the title alone, and pragmatically speaking, it's a remarkable value. For under eleven bucks, you can get this comprehensive set of writings, whereas buying just a handful of them in other sources (if such books are available for the work you want to read) would cost that much or more! A remarkable value!
I was most interested in the works of Josephus, but I quickly became enthralled by the way other works eerily paralleled our own society. Several of these writings can only be described as "how-to" books, for example. And, there's a document claiming to be written by Marc Antony himself entitled "On Going to Bed with Cleopatra", which makes one wonder if the Romans' attention was as misfocused as our own on cults of celebrity instead of important things. Over the years, you can follow along as Rome learns about the death of Christ from St. John, experiences Caligula and Nero, and dozens of other historical events. The Roman opinions clearly didn't always pan out, as our historical 20-20 vision will quickly tell you, but it's interesting to see how they viewed things at the time.
A Fun Resource, Marred By Some Creaky Translations.......2003-09-18
This Mammoth Book of Eyewitness Ancient Rome, edited by Jon Lewis, is really about the same size as a Viking Portable, so the title overstates the reality. At the same time, the book does collect a wide variety of Roman writings from all phases of its development and collapse. I've never before run across the Twelve Tables(450) BCE, anonymous rituals, Josephus, St. Augustine, Hannibal, Pliny, Suetonius, Marcus Aurelius, Horace, Caesar, Cicero, Juvenal, Constantine and too many others, known and anonymous, to name, all in one volume. It's main problem is that some of these translations are so hoary it's hard to imagine anyone ever expressed themselves in such convoluted and ornate language. Hannibal's speech to his troops is a prime example: it is unlikely his troops would have understood what he said, much less been motivated to valor, if he actually talked like he does in the translation here. Most of the pieces are good enough, though. It's fun to browse through, to get a peek at what Romans thought of themselves, and ordinary things they did, as well as great ones. The chronology at the front is very handy, too.
Customer Reviews:
Great for younger grades.......2005-08-21
We used in our study of Ancient Rome. Kids enjoyed format and pictures.
A Great Introduction to Roman Culture!.......2000-12-10
I would especially recommend this book for homeschooling parents who want a lively and interesting introduction to Roman culture for their children. Written in question and answer format, children will learn how modern culture compares and contrasts with the ancient world.
How do you put on a toga? Did Roman women wear makeup? How were mosaics made? What was it like inside a roman house? Did they have toilets? Who and what were gladiators? Did the Romans have zoos?
The color illustrations are terrific! A great book for older elementary and middle school students!

Quite complete!.......2005-06-15
This three-volume, behemoth of a bible on reptile care and medicine covers almost any topic you can think of or might encounter, either as a herpetoculturist, veterinary nurse or veterinarian.
Although some topics lack detail, this is understandable considering the sheer size of the books and the vast amount of subjects that are touched. Sometimes a little extra research will be needed if you want to know more, but for most purposes, this set is more than adequate.
The only deterrant is its price (and maybe its weight!), however it is well worth the money.
One of the Best Herpetological Sets Available.......2001-07-11
This is wonderfully edited 3 volume set which is one of the best and most complete series on reptiles available. Even when compared to veterinary texts, which often only focus in on one aspect of biology, the Ackerman, et. al stands heads and shoulders above them as a resource tool. Having purchased this set two years ago, I only have one regret and that is having not bought this sooner. Being an amateur herpetologists for the past twenty-two years, I find this to be a resource that is always helpful.
Volume One - Biology of Reptiles = This is a great overview of the biology and physiology of the world's reptiles. This volume focuses mainly on the more "popular" reptiles seen in captivity, but most of this data can be applied to other species as well. The anatomical charts and dissection photos are also very useful in knowing the locations of important structures (very helpful for Vol.3) and anatomical landmarks.
Volume Two - The Husbandry of Reptiles = WOW! This volume is worth the price of admission alone - I have not seen anything as thorough as this for the captive care of any reptile species let alone an entire phyla. Housing, diet, breeding, light spectrums (species specific), hibernation - its all in here and in detail.
Volume Three - The Healthcare of Reptiles = This is the volume that sold me on the entire set. This covers many ailments and pathogens that can affect reptile species. Symptoms, preventive measures, and medications (with dosages) are plotted out in charts and diagrams; color photos of pathological conditions and treatment are given; dietary supplements; surgical and necropsy protocols and procedures are also included.
All three volumes are filled with full color photographs and plenty of charts and text. I have seen this set quoted at many different prices and I suggest you shop around be it online or at a herp store...
Useful reference.......2001-03-17
This text proves useful in understanding the physiological make-up of herps in volume 1. The volume on husbandry (vol.2) is weak if you are looking for species specific information or in-depth information regarding vivarium set up. The real strength of the work lies in the final volume on discussing the health care of reptiles. The Ackerman and Ackerman work does not eclipse Frye's _Reptile Care_ but it does give more recent clinical applications on the medical care of your herps than its predecessor. Overall, it is a wise investment for both hobbyists and professionals.
A must for any serious Herper.......2000-08-01
This set of three volumes are wonderfully illustrator and well written. Each book is geared to a different aspect of reptiles care. The first covers in great detail the biology of all reptiles species. They document and show detailed photos of each species anatomy so that you will understand how a reptile functions. In the husbandry volume, they cover everything from proper housing to diet with examples and photos of what to look for if something is incorrect and the reptile is ill. I was very impressed with the health care one. It was so well done that I felt my vet could do a procedure detailed in it (that they might not have dealt with yet in their practice) with ease. This set is a must for anyone serious in the study and raising of any reptile.

Book Description
A woman living and communicating in multiple lands, Susana Chávez-Silverman conveys her cultural and linguistic displacement in a humorous, bittersweet, and even tangible way in this truly bilingual literary work. These meditative and lyrical pieces that combine poignant personal confession, detailed daily observation, and a memorializing drive that shifts across time and among geocultural spaces. The author’s inventive and flamboyant use of Spanglish, a hybrid English-Spanish idiom, and her adaptation of the confessional "crónica" make this memoir compelling and powerful. Killer Crónicas confirms that there is no Latina voice quite like that of Susana Chávez-Silverman.
Killer Crónicas includes a chapter that was awarded first prize in El Andar magazine's Chicano Literary Excellence Contest in the category of personal memoir.
Customer Reviews:
Trips well-worth Taking in this Gorgeous Linguistic and Dramatic Tour-de-force!.......2007-01-08
Killer Crónicas asks the following questions, among others:
* What is the nature of the exquisitely ambiguous pleasure we experience in passing as members of the local community?
* What are the costs of being identified as an insider, or outsider, by members of the communities in which we travel?
* How might the experience of being at once inside and outside be specific to pan-Latin and Jewish post-holocaust cultural identity, without regard to location?
* How to develop a language limited enough to connote specific geopolitical contexts, yet broad enough to denote the simultaneity in memory of related circumstances separated by distance and time?
Killer Crónicas draws from multiple genres, such as the literature of travel in Spanish (cartas de exploración, of discovery) and in English (here, the Anglo-American category of life-writing, which includes biography, autobiography, and letters, is helpful.) Particulary original is the sustained and studied attention to the traveler's status as a consumer. Underlying the internationalism and bilingualism of Chávez-Silverman's accomplishment is a creativity comparable to Latino performance artists such as Coco Fusco (author of English is Broken Here) Guillermo Gómez-Peña, or code-switching poets such as Tino Villanueva.
I personally find Gloria Anzaldua's work almost unreadable (there's no rhyme, reason, or inventiveness) while I think that Cherrie Moraga is good for her work's characters and dynamic. In Killer Crónicas what's original is how the writer focuses attention on the relation between what we say and how we say it in one or both languages, showing how the mind moves at the moment of the "switch." This work demonstrates a mode of thought familiar to those of us who work in multiple cultural locations, reproducing the habit of thinking in multiple languages. This challenges the hegemonic attitudes about what constitutes linguistic propriety in either Spanish or English by pointing up the complexities of both languages. Also the mixture of languages legitimates a practice that is very widespread: the INVENTIVE use of multiple languages, registers. Read this very contemporary, brilliant book for the puns, for the writer's inspired, faux, alternative, and refused translations. Killer Crónicas is steeped in multiple literary traditions: Argentine, CalifAtzlan, On the Road-Trippers, but most of that incomparable Spanish-language genre that is so definitive in the New World: the Crónica. Clever, sassy, intelligent, poetic... continual code-switching is a wonderful vehicle to convey the sensations and experiences of a multi-cultural life. Her poetry invokes the intimacy I often feel when back in a long-lost land. Her quick wit and carefully-chosen details chronical well the feelings of isolation and observer-looking-in that seem to dog me wherever I land.
This is well worth the read.

yes...i know.......2003-09-04
what can i say? um...yes i am a U2 fan. U2 fans like glossy covered books with the "four lads from dublin" inside and on the cover...books that put them up on the rock n' roll pedestal (is that even how you spell it?). so...what i'm saying is...well YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING if yer a fan and to quote Bono (just cause i want to) "rock n' roll dooggie!!!"
visually assaulting, always intriguing.......2001-03-26
A warning: If you are looking for an easy-to-read book to enjoy on a nice afternoon or before bed, this is not for you. While the content of "U2 Faraway So Close" is nothing short of absolutely fascinating, the book's layout is highly stylized and can be visually assaulting and rather difficult to read.
BUT...
If you want fabulous pictures and fun, often hilarious, anecdotes about the greatest band in the world (U2...duh!), track down a copy of "U2 Faraway So Close" and snatch that puppy up as fast as you can!
"U2 Faraway So Close" takes you on the Zoo TV tour with U2, as seen through the eyes and camera lens of B. P. Fallon (before he got kicked off the tour, but that's a story you can learn more about in "U2 at the End of the World" by Bill Flanagan). Fallon shows us the band in concert, partying, relaxing, with friends. He captures a couple of great shots of Adam in his famous skirt, as well as some faboo pictures of Bono's wife (she's gorgeous!), The Edge's Morleigh (she's gorgeous too!), and Adam's then-fiancee Naomi Campbell (no comment from me on her). All the photos are accompanied by entertaining, sometimes roll-on-the-floor-laughing hilarious, stories from the tour, offering some juicy tidbits for people who just can't get enough U2.
While its format doesn't lend itself too well to bedtime reading, "U2 Faraway So Close" does make a great coffeetable book, gift or obsession-feeder for U2 lovers. Go snag a copy and enjoy!
Should be in every fans collection.......2001-03-09
I can't see why every U2 fan wouldn't have this in their collection. The pictures in this book are amazing. It is by far the best behind-the-scenes photo's collected in one book for U2, if not any band. If you love the band (especially the 'Zoo TV' period, in which this book thoroughly chronicles) then grab this book.
A book that makes you want to know even more about U2.......1999-08-31
A book about U2 with pictures included seemed to me a chance to find out more about U2 than I ever wanted to know. In some cases that was true, but I came away from this book wanting to know more! I wanted to scream, "Where are more pictures? Where are more stories?" B.P. Fallon gives us a glimpse of life on the road for U2,and after reading this book I wish that I could have seen it through his eyes. It is a quirky diary, however, and the time sequences change enough to drive you batty. You wil be page flipping back and forth. But the craziness was worth it. While the book uncovers U2 on tour, the pictures provide more mystery than ever about the world's greatest band.
Odd but excellent.......1999-07-21
This book allows you to do what every U2 fan has always wanted to do: go on tour with U2. It is told through the eyes of someone who is doing just that, in a plain, day to day format. Although the arrangement is a bit random, it lets you peek into the offstage life of the band. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book.
