5 out of 5 stars Useful travel book.......2007-05-14

We live approx. 3 hours from KC and like to visit about once a year. This book is packed with useful information. It's a great buy even if you plan on visiting KC only once.

4 out of 5 stars What to do in Kansas City ..........2007-03-20

I am a resident of the area and was impressed with the ideas given to have a vacation without leaving the city.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-06-23

THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO KANSAS CITY is a wonderful book. It tells you where the best neighborhoods are on both the Missouri and Kansas sides; the best school districts; the best health care; and virtually everything you need to know about this area. Of course, it could talk about the shopping malls in more depth, like some other books in this series, and some radio station listings are inaccurate as to category and should be taken like the humor in AMERICAN WEDDING, SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE, THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS, HARVARD MAN, DRIVE ME CRAZY, 13 GOING ON 30, PRETTY WOMAN, MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, FRIENDS, DATE MOVIE, and/or the two GARFIELD movies featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt (for example, KRBZ belongs in the Rock/Rhythm/Soul category, not the Contemporary category, while KLZR is not even a Kansas City station but is based in Lawrence and belongs in the Contemporary category, not Rock/Rhythm/Soul, as does KFME, which is now KCJK, and moreover, KNRX is now KMJK- an adult urban contemporary station- and is located about 45 minutes away, in Lexington, MO), as should the listing of Countryside as a separate city (it merged with Mission in 2003), but overall, if you're interested in different metro areas, you'll crave this book.

When I read this book I felt like Katie was personally showing me KC. It was like she was holding my hand as we explored the neighborhoods and hot spots.

    5 out of 5 stars A KC Household Must.......2002-12-19

As a local, who takes the city for granted and continually revisits the old haunts, I am enormously grateful for this comprehensive insight into what MY city has to offer.
Katie has sparked the "adventurous" in me and now I am ready to hit the road. This is a book meant for every local's library not to mention all visitors to the city. Most of us are unaware of the myrid options that Kansas City offers. This guide gives us the opportunity to explore and enjoy everything that is available. We are also prepared when, when they come, to enlighten visitors as to everything that Kansas City is about.
Thank you Katie for making all of us who have the book "insiders." The book is a must.

              Book Description

Mercedes introduced their first unitary bodied car as the 180 in 1953. The following year the company revealed the 190SL with Plexiglas screen and lightweight doors. Not produced until March 1955 the production cars had bodywork akin to the 300SL and was powered by a 4-cylinder sohc engine of 1897cc. Production lasted until February 1963. Using racing techniques of µadding lightness' the 300SL was built around a complex tubular chassis that made conventional doors impossible. Thus the Gullwing was born in 1952 as a pure sports/racing car. The production version gained weight with road going features and a slightly redesigned body. Bosch fuel injection helped to get the extra power needed. 1400 coupes were built before being replaced by the roadster in 1957. This is a book of contemporary road tests, technical data, racing, restoration.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-06-09

Botanica is one of my favorite reference books, it's got great pictures and so many unusual plants. I also own the American Horticultural Society's A-Z Encyclopedia, but I never use it. Botanica is written in clear, common English, gets me excited about the plants, and gives me an intuitive feel for the plants. A-Z is a dry, scholarly compendium and an excellent doorstop.

One problem with Botanica is the binding. It's been through many different publishers, but every well-used copy I see is held together with strapping tape.

I find the zone recommendations dead on, but maybe that's because one of the editors lives in my town. But don't worry, I've only met him once and he had had no influence on this review.

4 out of 5 stars Attractive to the eye, somewhat limited utility........2004-05-27

I purchased this book as "The Plant Book" on sale for $19.99 at Borders books & music in 2004. It is interesting to note that the introduction _How This Book Works_ still uses the title "Botanica".

This book has tons of pictures that are veritable eye candy, but their usefulness varies. Some of the pictures are not close-up enough to identify small details of the plants and others are so close-up that you can't tell the overall growth form of the plant. Ideally, it would be nice to have several pictures at different scales (e.g. close up views of flowers and leaves at several angles and pictures of the whole plant). However, inclusion of more pictures probably would have made the book too big to transport.

When trying to identify unknown plants it is nice to have the plants organized by generic name, when you know the genus. However, it can make identifying the plant frustrating when you run into a plant that you know which family, but not which genus it belongs to. In such cases, a book with keys and organization by family is more useful (e.g. Liberty Hyde Bailey's Manual of Cultivated Plants). However, this book's color pictures and quantity of plants nicely compliments books such as Bailey's Manual of Cultivated Plants as well as local flora manuals such as The Jepson Manual.

I haven't used the book enough yet to judge the accuracy of its information.

5 out of 5 stars the professionals choice.......2002-06-22

I'm a garden designer and couldn't do without it. Every garden centre I know also has a copy. The Zone guides have always been exactly right based on my experience. Highly recommended.
(I also own and use our local edition of the AHS Encyclopedia which Amazon sell but it is slightly older so doesn't have as many new varieties - still a great book)

              5 out of 5 stars Plant Nursery's Best Friend.......2002-01-06

Working in a small plant nursery, we depend on this book for everything it seems. Many of our customers are new to the area and know only common names for what they're looking for. We've used this book extensively to find these plants. In fact, we've used it so much that this is the second copy we're ordering, having worn out the first! No garden center or gardener should be without this incredible book.

              5 out of 5 stars I HAVE 2 COPIES OF THIS!.......2001-07-23

This book is excellent! It covers almost very plant you can think of - and many more! It covers everything you need to know before you consider buying, planting...

My friends always want to borrow this, so I have 2 copies. That way I am sure that I will never be without it.

This is a great single source book! If you can only buy one- THIS IS IT!

                    Book Description

The period between 950 and 1150 A.D. is regarded as "turning point in the history of the Islamic Culture" from the Early Islamic to the Late Medieval civilization. What led to the urban decline in between and the later recovery? Ḥ̣arrān and al-Raqqa serve as paradigma for the development in Northern Syria and Northern Mesopotamia.

The collapse of the cAbbasid state left the region cornered between Buyids, Fatimids and Byzantines to the nomadic tribes not acquainted with urban culture. After 1086 A.D., measures undertaken by the Seljuqs in order to safeguard their hegemony led to a renaissance of cities inspite of permanent power struggles and the crusades. They based their rule on fortified places. The financing of the army led to the distribution of land as fiefs (iqtac) and subsequently to a dislodgement of nomads and a recultivation of former agricultural land. Cash money for the treasury was generated by skimming long distance trade; this in turn required public security on the roads. An analysis of the monetary circulation according to archaeological and literal evidence serves as measure for the economic recovery. A corpus of the coin production in al-Raqqa, ḥarrān and al-Ruha'/Edessa supplements the textual sources.

                    Book Description

After September 11, 2001 Las Vegas Police Sergeant Randy Sutton began soliciting writing from law enforcement officers-his goal being to bridge the gap between the police and those they serve, with a book that offers a broad and thoughtful look at the many facets of police life. Hundreds of active and former officers responded from all over the United States: men and women from big cities and small towns, some who had written professionally, but most for the first time. Sutton culled the selections into five categories: The Beat, Line of Duty, War Stories, Officer Down, and Ground Zero. The result is True Blue, a collection of funny, charming, exciting, haunting stories about murder investigations, missing children, bungling burglars, car chases, lonely and desperate shut-ins, routine traffic stops, officers killed in the line of duty, and the life-changing events of September 11. Here, officers reveal their emotions-fear and pride, joy and disgust, shame and love-as they recount the defining moments of their careers. In these stories, the heart and soul behind the badge shines through in unexpected ways. True Blue will change the way we think about the deeply human realm of police service.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars TRUE BLUE.......2007-06-06

So... This is an amazing book that allows you to reach down deep into the minds and souls of the police officers. Just like Sutton's "A Cops Life" I found this book to be amazing. It also has a section dedicated to the officers of 9/11. Sure we have all heard about 9/11 but have you heard true behind the scenes, in the hearts and minds of a police officer who responded that horrible day and survives?

                    5 out of 5 stars Real.......2007-01-10

I believe that this book really captures a lot of what being a cop is about. People who aren't cops that read this book will be shocked at some of the things we see and do, but it's true. I think it should help them appreciate us more. As a cop, I found the book to be entertaining and motivational.

                    5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2006-11-12

After reading each of the stories in this great collection of true police stories I was anxious to see what the next offered. The book is very difficult to put down.

I thought the officers told their stories very honestly and openly. Excellent read!

5 out of 5 stars True Blue Shows Police Officers as Humans and Heroes!.......2006-07-13

The author reveals in the begining of the book why he wrote it, to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the general public after 9/11. He lives up to this statement. After reading True Blue I have even more respect and admiration for what law enforcement officers must face each day on the job. The most important discovery upon reading this book is you will see police officers are "humanbeings" with feelings. Some of the stories made me laugh while others made me cry. I look forward to the publishing of "A Cops Life" in August of 06. Everyone should read this book!

                    3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2006-01-20

Like many story collections, this one is truly a mixed bag. Among the highlights are some delightfully funny annecdotes of crimes gone wrong and some heartwarming stories of police at their very best. However, there are also stories that are criminally mundane, and others so syrupy sweet they border on offensive. The extensive section of 9/11 stories is overkill. There is little there that hasn't already been said many times over, with the common theme being that we owe a debt of gratitude to those gave the ultimate service to their country that day. A noble point, but one that has been made repeatedly. Sutton offers nothing new about 9/11, its heroes or its victims.

Perhaps my main objection to this collection is one must enter the undertaking with the assumption that Patrick Cleburne was both infallible and the almighty's gift to the Confederacy. If you are a die hard Cleburnite, you will enjoy the sermons. If you are objective in your approach, or just looking for more background information on the man, the collection will leave you wanting.

Good biographical sketches offer their subject warts and all. This is not done here. Several of the essays are not well researched, casting the entire volume in poor light. In sharp contrast White's work well done. At the same time, as typical for Joslyn's work, the overall tone is so jaundiced against the Federal side, one wonders why the Yankees ever could win a battle, much less the war!

A Meteor Shining Brightly is an absorbing read of many aspects of Cleburne's life:

                        1. His family background and struggles in 1840s Ireland.
                        2. His acceptance by the people in his adopted hometown of Helena, Arkansas.
                        3. Early war years and well-earned promotions.
                        4. Particular battles: Shiloh, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Ringgold Gap, Pickett's Mill, Atlanta, and finally, Franklin.
                        5. His controversial, yet well-thought out proposal to offer freedom for slaves who offered to fight for the Confederacy (slavery was doomed to fail and the Confederacy, led by Robert E. Lee, sought to include slaves as soldiers towards the end of the war).
                        6. His obviously strong moral character.
                        7. Proclivity to shyness around women and his intense and successful courtship of Susan Tarleton (too bad he did not survive the war and marry Susan!).
                        8. His sensitive nature (yes, men can be strong and sensitive).

Having been a Cleburne admirer for many years, all I can say is:

                        What a read!

I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in learning more about a very capable and often overlooked Civil War general.

A majority of the essays in this book are quite well done, but a few shallow efforts such as Alethea Sayers' quite-clearly poorly researched article leave gaping holes in the text. Cartwright's effort is well-presented and Joselyn's article, while written with readability in mind leaves the reader with more questions than answers. A consistantly written biography of Cleburne would be preferable to this halting, sometimes good, sometimes bad collection.

Being a non-historian (this is the only history book I've read cover to cover in 7 years), I was initially dreading reading this book. However, its well-organized format, its to-the-point style (to which almost all of the authors ascribed), and its information were incredible. This is an enjoyable read. FYI, I also sent an e-mail to the author of the book as I was tracking down Cleburne's original work, and she very graciously replied within a day, informing me that his work was at the University of Arkansas. READ THIS BOOK!!!

A Meteor Shining Brightly : Essays on the Life and Career of Major General Patrick R. Cleburne by Mauriel Phillips Joslyn is a collection of numerous essays about the life of Confederate Major General Patrick R. Cleburne. It is organized in chronological order so as to depict his entire life. The decision to organize the book in such a manner forms the foundation for the primary weakness of the endeavor. The book is not necessarily the best essays on Cleburne's life and the different authors prevent any continuity from chapter to chapter other than time.

There are certain parts of Cleburne's life that are appropriate for the essay format. Several areas are the early years in Ireland and it effect on his latter career, Cleburne's proposal that slaves be freed and incorporated into the Confederate Army and his death at the Battle of Franklin. In addition, the issue of how an individual who understood and identified with the downtrodden of Ireland could have been so devoted to the Confederacy which was based on the slavery of human beings is not even mentioned in the essays. Instead of treating these issues in depth, the collection at best treats them as another part of Cleburne's life. This is a shame, for Cleburne's life, and especially his proposal to enlist slaves into the Confederate Army, deserves a more in depth treatment.

The collection seems to be trapped between its desire to be a biography and a collection of essays exploring different views of Cleburne's life. By trying to do both, it did neither well. The collection does succeed in putting forward the facts of Cleburne's life in a fairly easy to read format. The individual authors are all well qualified and write well. However, if one is looking for a straight forward biography of Cleburne, I would suggest Stonewall of the West : Patrick Cleburne and the Civil War (Modern War Studies) by Craig L. Symonds.
