                    ROUGH GUIDE TO AUSTRIA
                    Jonathan Bousfield and Rob Humphreys
                    ISBN 1-85828-709-X

Earlier this month, my wife and I completed the most recent of several trips to Austria in the last few years. On the whole, the coverage of Austrian towns and cities in this book is so comprehensive that it would be difficult to judge much of it fairly without having been to these places. However, I reviewed the parts of this book about some of the places with which I had familiarity. Generally, I found the descriptions insightful and accurate from my own observations.

We stayed once in a tiny town with the two-letter name of "Au" in Vorarlberg, the western-most province of Austria, next to Switzerland. This book says that it is "an undeniably attractive spot" and "If you are looking for a rural break, this as good a place to stay and rest up as any." After spending a couple of days in Au, I had concluded pretty much the same thing.

Regarding the village of Heiligenblut, which sits at the base of the Grossglockner, the highest mountain in Austria, in the southern province of Kaernten, the authors describe it as "one of the most attractively situated villages in the Austrian Alps". Indeed, it is. The writers characterize the valley where Heiligenblut is located as remarkably steep-sided. Having stayed in a farmhouse far up one of those slopes, I can attest to the fear of a slight misstep in parking near the edge of the incline. But the view of the village far below was spectacular.

As regards accommodations, this book seems to favor hotels over smaller more reasonable accommodations such as those of the "Urlaub am Bauernhof" or "Vacation on the Farm" type, which are widely available across Austria. For example, there are several in Au and Heiligenblut. These accommodations are quite popular with Germans and the Austrians themselves. The atmosphere and hospitality at such places is most often quite warm and friendly. The Internet would provide more information about these accommodations than this book.

I would not bother much with the authors' recommendations about restaurants and places to eat. The fact of the matter is that there are far more good places to eat than mediocre ones in the whole of Austria.

The authors have researched the historical background of Austria well. It is often difficult to understand the significance of many of the things one sees in a country like Austria where history is rich and deep. For example, Aggstein castle in the Wachau is just another ruined castle without knowing that it was twice in its long history the stronghold of robber barons who preyed on ships on the Danube and lies in ruins from the actions of the Turkish army in the 16th century.

If you are debating whether or not to buy this book, consider two things. It is relatively inexpensive, and it is much more often accurate than not.

2 out of 5 stars Writing is good, but difficult to use.......2003-11-12

I used this book during a three day visit I made to Vienna. I only used the book in Vienna and therefore, I can not critique the book for the rest of Austria. However, based on the coverage of Vienna, I would have a difficult time recommending this book. The main flaw with the guide is the index which is inadequate. For example, if you want to find the opening hours of one of the museums in Vienna, you have the skim through the entire Vienna section of the book in hopes that the name of the museum will jump out at you because the museum will most likely not be in the index. This in itself is terribly frustrating.

This is the only book that I used, so I can not say if one of the other guide books would be a better option. Just be aware that the Rough Guide Austria has its flaws.

Your assumption might be that a book entitled "Who Really Discovered America?" would be one that makes the case for the discovering of the Americas by the Vikings rather than Christopher Columbus, but those are only a pair of the possibilities here. The complete title of Avery Hart's Kaleidoscope Kids Book is "Who Really Discovered America? Unraveling the Mystery & Solving the Puzzle" and if there is one thing you need to know before diving into this book it would be that you are not going to get the answer as the end. That is because the point here is to present young readers, ages 7-14, with all of the opinions and theories that make up the evidence for this particular historical puzzle. The goal is not to answer the question as to who really discovered America but rather to instruct readers on the mysterious ways in which history reveals itself to inquiring minds.

Recognizing that truth tacking is not easy, Hart provides his young readers with a five-point "Star Guide" to allow them to weigh the merits of the ideas they come across in this book. The idea is that each point on the star (or each finger on your hand) represents a particular point for which you can award 0 to 5 points for each theory: (1) Start with what you know: how does the new theory support the facts as you know them? (2) Throw out old opinions: Is your mind really open or do you secretly want a particular idea to be true (or untrue)? (3) Review the theory evidence: what specific evidence supports the theory and how reliable is it? (4) Use intuition: what does you gut say about the theory? (5) Put it all together: overall, does the idea make sense and fit with the other puzzle pieces? If you believe a theory is absolutely true it would score 25 points.

Throughout the book the "Truth Trackers" are presented with not two but ten different theories to evaluate and see which one comes closest to the truth and earns the highest score: (1) The Land-Bridge Theory that humans first crossed a strip of land from Russia to Alaska; (2) The Multiple-Migration Theory that the first people to discover the Western Hemisphere came by boats, in small groups, over thousands of years; (3) The Woden-Lithi Theory that an ancient Scandinavian king traveled from Norway, across the Atlantic, and up the St. Lawrence River to Toronto in about 1750 B.C.; (4) The Lakota Theory that all human life began in the Black Hills of the Dakotas; (5) The Alien Theory that gifted aliens came to earth to marry the first apelike prehumans and create the intelligent human beings of today; (6) Van Sertima's African Theory that Africans arrived in America almost 2,000 years before Columbus; (7) Professor Xu's Asian Theory that refugees from the Chinese Shang dynasty influenced the development of the Olmec civilization; (8) The Other Way-Around Theory that ancient people from the Americas took to the oceans and sailed on currents to Africa, Asia, or Europe; (9) The Vikings "Discovered" America; and (10) Columbus "Discovered" America.

For most of these theories Hart lays about the specific evidence for and against it to assist young readers to be "a history-in-the-making detective." Students are required to separate fact from fiction, search for artifacts, explore language links, interpret petroglyphs, trace ocean currents, and debate the different theories. Along the way they will learn a little bit about different peoples, from Kennewick Man and Spirit Caveman to the Red Paint People, Olmec, and Mound Builders. There are also creative activities such as building a Viking ship and a "Kon Tiki"-style reed boat, growing a sod house, writing a Viking saga, estimating a trees age, making a giant-sized drawing, baking Taino bread, giving Columbus a grade in geography, taking a survey, and inventing a new holiday to celebrate the Americas.

There is an entire grade school unit of at least two-weeks in length packaged in the 96-pages of "Who Really Discovered America?" Students should be excited by the prospect of being a detective, gathering the evidence, thinking about and questioning that evidence, and engaging in creative projects. Just the idea that the "right" answer (or the "truth," if you will) is debatable is an important lesson. Students will have the "beginning of a deeper understanding of what discovery and America are really all about," but will also realize that new information about the discovery of America is always being uncovered and that the question remains open in the future. In fact, finding out about that new information could be part of the project.

Cass Turnbull has written a wonderful book for the homeowner who has no idea what to do with the yard, but wants to do it right. She begins with the basics of yard maintenance, and very clearly explains pruning, weeding, renovation, and design of home landscapes. Her irreverent style is a pleasure, and her examples and diagrams are extremely helpful. She explains why topping a tree always backfires, why leaving the tree can actually improve your view of the mountains, what to do with a tree that is "too big", and how to renovate a mature landscape that you have just bought. I recommend this book to every first-time homeowner and to any experienced homeowner who still gets bored every spring and chops at the bushes at random "to tidy up".

I am a professional horticulturist with a Masters degree in Horticulture from Penn State and I highly recommend this book as an easy-to-follow and accurate reminder of "how to" do landscape maintenance, like pruning. I will buy it and loan it ot my untrained friends so they can learn how to do it right ("teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime"). I highly recommend it. Plus, it's written by woman! A rarity in the field of landscape maintenance.

                                        Book Description

This wide-ranging introduction to the interpretation of the Apocalypse comes from scholars who have worked together for over a decade as members of the Society of Biblical Literature Seminar on Reading the Apocalypse: The Intersection of Literary and Social Methods. Each chapter provides an overall reading of Revelation that grows out of a particular methodological approach. The primary approaches include historical, literary, and social analysis, which are then used in combination with other reading strategies including social conflict theory, philosophy, women's studies, ethics, History of Religions, Postcolonial Studies, and popular culture. Each of the essays focuses on a specific text from Revelation and shows how the method used helps interpret that text, and how diverse methods produce divergent readings of a text. Contributors include David L. Barr, Paul B. Duff, Ronald L. Farmer, Steven J. Friesen, Edith M. Humphrey, Jon Paulien, Jean-Pierre Ruiz, and L! eonard L. Thompson. Developed as a resource book for undergraduates, this work will also prove useful to more advanced students, clergy, and others who wish to explore how methods shape our understandings of texts. All will benefit from up-to-date discussions by some of the leading scholars studying Revelation today.

Follow Christian singer/songwriter Tammy Trent as she tells of her beautiful love story turned tragic, still pointing to God as the source of all life and hope.

Theirs was a fairy-tale romance. Her husband, Trent, was Tammy's best friend and business manager. While vacationing in Jamaica in 2001, a routine free diving excursion in the Blue Lagoon turned drastically tragic when Trent never resurfaced. Unfortunately, the following day's events of 9/11 would create an incredible obstacle to Tammy's and her family's efforts to connect and handle these horrendous events.

Tearful prayers pleading with God to make Himself real have been answered, and God is slowly restoring Tammy's joy and hope, as she begins to sing and dance again for Him.

Tammy did a wonderful work in describing a pain that many of us face and have to go through. At times I felt like she was describing my own thoughts and feelings when I lost my only child in a car accident. While you are learning to draw breath again, our Lord and Savior truly does literally carry you through the pain until you can begin to see hope again. Life doesn't stop just because a life that means more to you than your own, has stopped. In telling her own story, Tammy helps us to tell ours.

As I read this book I had tears in my eyes. I am also a young widow and I have two children (the last was born 3 months after her father passed away while on a business trip in California the rental car he had been driving was hit by a semi. Being a widow I didn't care for the comments made by Deborah Reece, I thought them to be insensitive and hurtful. saying "be thankful for what you have" is just like saying the pain lessens with time. For me it hasn't. It doesn't appear to me she has read the book (kind of like the other book she "read") but for some reason she had an opinion about it. Finding true love is not hard (once upon a time I thought it was) its just about not settling for second best. We should feel sorry for Tammy as she has been through alot. Yes alot of women go through it but that doesn't make it less painful. Also the book I feel was a testamony I don't think she wrote it to make people feel sorry for her. Trent was an amazing man and I was deeply touched by the book (I lead it out alot sometimes to unbelievers one of whom I believe has come to Christ from being inspired by Tammy's book. I love the title as I too thought I couldn't breathe after Dan's crash, everytime I would take a deep breathe I felt as if I couldn't take another breath.Deborah, If you want a wonderful man just pray about it and try to show that you have a wonderful personality, I think guys like positive girls not ones who have negative things to say where they shouldn't be.

I recently lost my husband suddenly, I have felt all the emotions that Tammy expressed in her book. At 24 I have lost my husband, my father (at 16) and two sisters. Last year my husband and I were expecting a little girl and he was so excited to becoming a father. We had been married for 3 years and just bought a house and another car. Unexpectedly my husband was killed a snowmobiling accident, while on a vacation with his brothers. The area that they were on was about 66 acres and he had gone out alone (this was unusual for him) and hadn't returned after three hours they became worried and went to search for him. There were alot of snowmobile tracks and they weren't sure which ones to follow, so they had formed a search party to look for him. As night fell still no sign of my wonderful husband. The next morning they found my husband who had hit a tree, he was wearing a helmet but somehow it had come off of his head upon the snowmobile hitting the tree sending him flying into the tree, he was gone taking my heart with him. I totally understand why she choose the title "Learning to breathe again: choosing life and finding hope after a shattering loss" because thats just what you have to do, when you lose your husband like that, and being so young you think you have your whole life ahead of you and you make so many plans, When you lose it all like that you feel like you have to learn how to breathe again (Im still learning to breathe again)

Tim was my life, my forever love. I know that when I had our daughter Grace Katheryne (it seemed to fit her she was God's Grace to me in such a rough time in my life and it was also the name Tim picked) I felt his presence as I gave birth to her 6 months ago (just 6 weeks after the accident) I know I will see him again in another time and Another place. As I look at her she looks more and more like her daddy each day she has his dark hair nose mouth and chin and my eyes. I know I have had some days when Ive said "I can't do this alone Lord" but then Im reminded that Im not alone God is with me each day and he will never leave me or forsake me. Tammy did such a beautiful job on this book I share it with other widows I know. No doubt it reached an unbeliever and has made them commit their lives to Christ
From the bottom of my heart thank you so much Tammy
