A very basic book covering all the fundamentals of successful clematis growing. Superb color photographs. It is a must for anyone contemplating growing clematis. The information is presented in a down to earth non-technical way. It is truly worth its purchase price - some more expensive books do not have half this much information. Certainly a bargain price - a must for anyone interested in clematis. Most books are written from a U.K. perspective but this one is indeed for the U.S. gardener.

I have become entranced with clematis in the last couple years, and have been looking through as many books as I can find to develop greater knowledge of their growth habits, pruning needs, care and colors. This book had succinct but ample explanations, clear illustrations on how to plant, prune and propagate, as well as a gallery of pictures of the flowers, grouped by color. Reading this small book, I felt I had everything I needed to know as an amateur. I now have seven different clematis in my garden, and they are among what pleases me most. The only negative was that I disagreed with the coloring of the H.F. Young plant--the one in my garden is much paler than the picture. I also would have liked to see even more photos of various flowers.

Insightful and fun.......2007-10-06

Very well written. Entertainingly true story of an Austrailian journalist who moved to Paris and eventually adapted to her new life with the help of her French boyfriend. Of course, there are many missteps and misunderstandings along the way. Turnbull presents these in a way that shares both the frustration of the moment and the amusement of looking back from a more enlightened future. Provides an interesting outsider turned near-insider's perspective of French culture.

Great book.......2007-08-09

I really enjoyed reading this book! It is true that it might not have been very deep, but Sarah's comments on Paris made me feel like I was there again. Very therapeutical. Also, I recommend reading this book slowly, a couple of pages at a time, so you can really absorb every comment. If you read it all at once, it is easy to overlook small details. Read a page, laugh at her comments, think about how they are very true. Put the book down. Pick it up an hour later. I think you will get the most out of it if you pace yourself. In all, I recommend this book to anyone who longs for Paris.

Being French, but having moved to The US when I was young I wanted to see if I could relate to this book. And yes I could. Sarah Turnbull really hits it right on. It is so refreshing to read a book that is fun, easy and accurate in it's description of a different culture. I really enjoyed reading this book.

I raved about this book to all my friends! Sarah's account of her trials and tribulations adjusting to life in France is so descriptive and humorous. When she describes any aspect of the Paris scene, I feel like I am right there with her. If you love to travel and love a good narrative, read this!

I would prefer more wining and less whining.......2007-03-29

This book actually annoyed me. The author finds herself moving in on a seemingly charming Frenchman and then complains about what her life is like with him. I still don't understand what the couple were doing together in the first place. It doesn't feel like there's any love between them....it seems that this was the opportune moment for her to try out what it would be like to live in Paris. I don't really see what it she brings to the table.....she's demanding, is not earning a living and does nothing to make their life together more pleasant....she just complains. She convinces him to move from a very comfortable (but boring) apt to a much better situated and much more expensive one. I don't hear that she helps him pay for this in any way....just expects it. That certainly has not been the way my life has been and if it had been I don't thing I'd be complaining. It just rubbed me the wrong way. She seems spoiled and he seems to play into it. I thiink he is far too patient with her. There were not enough cute and funny stories that could have been a part of this story.

My great good luck..........2001-11-22

...was to pick this book up at the Dublin airport on my way home to Atlanta. It is charming and, no surprise since Mr Kavanagh is a poet, very poetic. My favourite quote, which should give you the flavour of the book is: "But though the coin of joy isn't legal tender in the mundane shops of the world, it is in the lands of Imagination, and I to-day, jingling my purse of memory, know I am richer than Rockefeller or Henry Ford or the Rothschilds ever were."
This book gives you a feel for the harsh realities and magic of living in Ireland in the first half of the 20th Century. I highly recommend it.

Patrick's Ashes.......2000-03-28

Patrick Kavanagh's autobiography of life in rural Ireland differs in many ways from McCourt's ubiquitous Angela's Ashes offering. In my opinion, it is far superior on every level - humour, pathos, wisdom, language, love...

Being from Ireland, this book speaks volumes in its meagre 250 pages. The final paragraph reads... "I returned to Ireland. Ireland green and chaste and foolish. And when I wandered over my own hills and talked again to my own people I lookde into the heart of this life and I saw that it was good".

Beautiful stuff... Seek this treasure out.

Embittered Brilliance.......2002-05-10

Having read the entire collection from cover to cover, I would have to say that there is much to interest the student of poetry. "The Great Hunger" is a very powerful early work. In some ways, I think that Kavanagh the poet lived in the shadow of that one achievement. Did Kavanagh rise to his potential? He might say that he did not. Was he too caught up in the image of being a poet? I think not. Did he put too many hopes in poetry as a means of financial salvation? Perhaps. However, whatever else Kavanagh's work is, it is REAL. The world he writes about is real. The cultures of ivory tower and religion that he often rails against are not as real as life is for the average person. This is the work's strongest suit. I would say this collection is more than worth a tour, but be prepared for much bitterness--and, to be fair, some occasional light hearted frivolity--and have a pint of Guiness after.

What a pity that the greatest of the Irish poets has not yet taken his rightful place in the higher places of learning in this country. As a fellow rural Irishman I have always considered Kavanagh to be 'my reality poet' who had, nevertheless, an extraordinary insight into the drawingrooms or cesspools of the 20th century Irish Catholic mind. His poem Lough Derg is without a doubt not just a poem but a vivid painting with words. 'They come to Lough Derg to fast and pray and beg
With all the bitterness of nonentities, and the envy of the inarticulate when dealing with the artist'. In the same poem he writes in reference to Irish neutrality during the Second World War,'All Ireland that froze for want of Europe' and froze from an ice-cold vision of DeValera. Read over and over again.This poem like many others are works of extraordinary perception and cultural analysis.. For many years I myself have searched for a definition of culture, you know, that something that is supposed to make us the same or different, but alas. In 'Memory of Brother Michael' I find: 'Culture is always something that was. Something pedants can measure, Skull of bard,thigh of chief, Depth of dried up river. Shall we be thus for ever? Shall we be thus for ever? It appears vey likely.

Of Dreams and Reality.......2000-12-18

Patrick Kavanagh seemed to me something completely new when I read this collection. In a country whose poetic voice was governed by the genius of Yeats for so long, Kavanagh comes along as a genuine alternative; of the common man, or the country village and the pub and the field. Kavanagh is no mere realist though; his poems are sometimes mythic and beautiful as well.

Ricketts et al. have tackled a monumental task--describing patterns in biodiversity throughout North America. For years, conservation biology has need a new perspective, a breath of fresh air, and the authors of this wonderful book have supplied both the perspective and the fresh air!
