    Book Description

A guide to the premier cycling destination in New England, a region of outstanding scenery, with lightly traveled, good quality roads, attractive and historic towns and villages, friendly residents, and a range of lodging and dining options.

This book offers rides over the entire Lake Champlain region, from the southern tip of the lake at the birthplace of the U.S. Navy in Whitehall, New York, to its northernmost bay in Quebec, west to Lake Placid and extending east to the charming college town of Middlebury.

Charles Hansen, who has been riding and organizing bicycle tours in the area for two decades, has researched and ridden these routes to create a book that will serve all cyclists—from the hardcore roadie who wants the challenge of an 82-mile ride through the eastern Adirondacks, to the casual rider or family looking for a scenic and largely flat afternoon outing. Several multiple day-tours are described, including the Lake Placid Weekender that starts from Burlington and provides a highly scenic and satisfying two-day ride for touring cyclists. Route notes are provided for The Grand Tour, a nine-day circumnavigation of the entire lake with a rest day in Montreal, as well as shorter variations on this tour.

From 25 Bicycle Tours in the Lake Champlain Region you'll learn much about the rich history of the region as well as find out about tourism organizations, lodging, museums, and attractions along the way. 30 black & white photos, 25 maps.

I used this book to take a six-day bike tour from Burlington, VT to Montreal, Quebec, and I had a great trip. The author's directions are so accurate that I was able to ride all the way to Montreal without consulting a map! The author recommended hotels that are conveniently located for cyclists and chose roads and bike paths that were scenic and generally had light traffic. This book is a valuable resource for any bicycle tourist!

      Book Description

The names Albrecht Durer and Hans Holbein the Younger evoke the dazzling accomplishments of Renaissance panel painting and printmaking, but they may not summon images of stained glass. Nevertheless, Durer, Holbein, and their southern German and Swiss contemporaries designed some of the most splendid works in the history of the medium. This lavish volume is a comprehensive survey of the contribution to stained glass made by these extraordinarily gifted artists and the equally talented glass painters who rendered their compositions in glass. Included are discussions of both monumental church windows and smaller-scale stained-glass panels made for cloisters, civic buildings, residences, and private chapels. The subjects of these rarely seen drawings and panels range from religious topics to secular themes, including love, planets, hunts, and battles. Focusing on stained glass produced in Germany and Switzerland from about 1495 to 1530, Painting on Light includes drawings by Durer, Holbein, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Baldung Grien, Jorg Breu the Elder, Hans Burgkmair, Urs Graf, Hans von Kulmbach, Hans Leu the Younger, Niklaus Manuel Deutsch, Hans Schaufelein, Hans Weiditz, and others. This informative book is published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Getty Museum from July 11 through September 24, 2000, and from November 7, 2000, to January 4, 2001, at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Any college-level arts library collection including classes or studies in stained glass will want to include this specialty history, which examines the collaboration between draftsmen and glass painters in southern Germany and Switzerland from 1480 to 1530. While Albrecht Durer is the focus here, others are examined for their contributions to the stained glass field and Painting on Light is packed with drawings and color examples of their works in a unique, appealing presentation.

            Book Description

A missionary excursion into an isolated village in the interior of Kenya opens windows to worlds rarely explored. The experiences captured in the journal of Charles Herrick, business executive turned missionary turned reluctant village doctor shows both the warm and amusing side of Africa as well as the bizarre sometimes eerily dark and spiritual side.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-12-21

Charles Herrick did an excellent job of bringing the story of his experience to me. I passed the book along to my friend, Diane, and she expressed her appreciation of the story and the contribution of Mr. Herrick in Africa.

            Jacque Stallman and Diane Carmel

            5 out of 5 stars Provocative.......2006-03-08

Before reading Breath of Kenya Africa was a continent far away, one with issues that prompted me to give money to relief organizations now and again. Reading Herrick's book put Kenya in my living room and in my heart.

I was particularly touched by the story of a widow, emaciated from aids and just a day from death who makes a final trip to her abandoned marital home in search of her red dress. The story later to reveal she was only 16.

The author does not soft pedal the cause and effect relationship of the health crisis he encounters. One Christian reviewer equates this candidness to discrimination and judgment, purporting the Kenyan's need for facilitation. Herrick unapologetically demonstrates a need for involvement far beyond facilitation into an axiom of change. Which he exemplifies by making this challenging journey, helping the people and taking the time to tell this story.

The book is a potent read and a call to action, I recommend it to anyone whoo wants to believe one person can make the world a better place.

5 out of 5 stars AN INSPIRING READ.......2005-11-09

Poetry, Rich text and Dialogue encouraged me to read more. I did not want Herrick's adventure to end.Photogrphs bring the story alive. It left me with a feeling that we must all go the distance to make earth a much better place.

2 out of 5 stars The Irony of Neglect.......2005-10-20

Researching this piece on the net, I was allured by three main details. First, it is a book about that love of mine - dear Kenya. Second, it promised the perspective of a missionary worker, which I felt would tie in the elements of faith, hope and love. Third, even though we have all been warned against it, I admit that I looked at the wonderful abstract of the African woman on the book cover, the symbol of Africa, and was drawn once again to the color and mystery of African stories.

I don't want to beat around the bush (unless it's a Kenyan bush and there's an awesome drum beat) so I will get straight to it. I was sad that Herrick's book lacked the "Breath" or inspiration promised in the title. At some points I found the images that he created of the African people extremely exaggerated and condescending and almost did not want to read on. I ached and was disappointed for these people as the author almost could not distinguish between one Kenyan and another, purporting that none had a sense of hygiene and that Kenyan father's showed no compassion at all toward their wives and children. I see that Kenya has more than it's fair share of problems but in some of his descriptions, he portrayed the villagers as germ infested animals.

I personally believe that it was his character specifically that inspired certain negative reactions from them. If I was the young girl under the tree with the leg ailment, I too would not have smiled in his presence. I would have stuck out my leg and my tongue!

It is upsetting that he did his work under what came across as a guise of care and genuine concern. Kenyans need facilitation and support not discrimination and judgment. These are real people in dire need of attention.

This book made me think of when Gandhi said that he would have been a Christian were it not for the Christians. Herrick's mind in a box made me understand why there is a certain perception of Christians out there. He seemed condemnatory and yet he himself did not incorporate a true spiritual insight into his subject matter. For a book that claimed to be a missionary journal, it was lacking in related substance.

Growing up in a loving Christian environment, I would like to vouch that we are not all like this. Some of us would have approached the situation with more love in our hearts. I'm not in denial of the many major problems, some of which Herrick clearly acknowledged or at least touched on, however my perpective is one that leans more to the side of a revolution that being revolted.

Tables Turn. At the end of the book, he almost comes to terms with this mindset. He looks inside himself and realizes that there is so much more to life than he set off knowing and believing. He has learned so much in a way. A good start I say. There is a sense of acceptance; not of the situation but of being human, vulnerable, in need of the basics, and not to forget - love. He shows some love for the Kenyans of Kodera and feels terrible having to leave them behind to fend for themselves so to speak. This is when we see a heart. I wish that this kind of emotion had radiated throughout the book. May be next time.

Not such a nice review. I would not recommend this book.

            Have you been to Kenya?

5 out of 5 stars Will touch your heart.......2004-06-27

This is a beautifully written, personal account of the daily life, and unimaginably difficult existance of the average, rural people of Kenya. It'll make you laugh and cry, and feel hope and outrage, all on the same page. It's full of grippping imagery and beautiful prose. Written from the perspective of a Christian missionaly, I, as a non-Christian, found it to be both humanly and spiritually enlightening. I highly recommend it to anyone who considers himself to be a citizen of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Must Have Book!.......2003-06-13

This Book is a great innovative book that is a 12 1/2 year old's fictious journal of his African Safari. There is action, adventure, humor and factual information about african animals, Swahili words, Massai people and wildlife preserves in Africa.

It's the most innovative children's book I've seen in a long time and will appeal to any child between the ages of 6 and 15. DON'T HESITATE -- BUY THIS BOOK! (you won't regret it!)

            5 out of 5 stars Fresh.......2003-06-13

This book was sent to me by a friend who knows I collect children's books. I had never heard of Hudson Talbott before, nor had I heard of this book.

It's fabulous! Safari Journal will appeal to both girls and boys ages 7 to 15, as well some adults. My 5 year old daughter asked me to read it the day it arrived, and she sat through the whole story, although it was quite a long story for a 5 year old! (I'm not so sure this would be typical, though.)

I love the photographs, the innovative way factual information is interwoven within a funny, adventureous story and the feeling that you are reading the actual journal of this 12 1/2 year old.

Side note: If you've ever been to Disney World's Animal Kingdom Lodge and liked it, you'll LOVE this book. It highlights the same animals you'll see there and the same people that are showcased in the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

                            Description:
This study compares the landscape-scale taphonomic signal of carnivore modification to the surficial bone assemblage in Amboseli Park, Kenya as it was in 1975 and 2002-2004. Change in predator abundances over time provides a means of assessing the taphonomic signal of carnivore-mediated bone consumption and destruction under differing ecological conditions and varying levels of conspecific competition for resources. The landscape assemblage indicates taxonomic variation in the patterning of carnivore modification to ungulates of different size classes as well as within equivalent size classes. Analyses of long bone elements indicate that the differential destruction of limb ends and the strength of the correlation between limb end abundance and bone mineral density provide an indication of the intensity of carnivore modification to a faunal assemblage. The ability to infer levels of carnivore modification based on limb elements can provide faunal analysts with the tools to determine whether the taphonomic signals in the fossil record relate to carnivore modification, hominin transport of appendicular elements, or both.

4 out of 5 stars Old but useful.......2005-09-10

The version I ordered used was very old, I can't remember if the publishing date was listed. Regardless, it is useful. Varieties change so quickly, and nurseries often change their supplier. The overall layout is not updated and easy to read (numbered steps and lists, more whitespace). The content is very applicable to Houston in my almost 2 years of experience and use of several other Texas gardening books that have been too broad in scope (the climate varies here!).

5 out of 5 stars A Garden Book for Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast by River.......2001-09-04

I have employed this book for over twenty-five years and attribute my lovely gardens to it's advice. I will be ordering the new edition as I have relocated to the Gulf area once again after many years on the Eastern seaboard, but now I am in Florida. Still, the month by month instruction for garden maintenance, plantings, pruning, fertilizing etc. will work in my area of Florida. I highly recommend this to any gardener along the Gulf Coast.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Book for Houston Gardeners.......2000-04-24

This is a terrific all-around gardening book for the Houston/East Texas Gardener written by the premier Houston gardening club. It is probably good for the whole Gulf Coast too, since the climates are similar. As an ex-northeasterner and novice gardener, I can say that if you are gardening in Houston and can only buy one book, this is it.

The text covers everything from herbs to flowers to trees, as well as potting, lawns, ground covers, vines, shrubs and vegetables. Special sections concentrate on Azaleas, Camellias and Roses, as well as soil improvement, watering, drainage, diseases and insects. In each section, tables list best planting times, blooming times, light and wattering requirements and other comments for each type of plant.

I found the book great for brain-storming, as well as for carrying to the garden store to determine if the great-looking flower or vine was really suitable for planting in my backyard.

My only regret: that it's not 50 pages longer...

                                  Book Description

Madeleine Albright is one of the most admired women of our era and the rst in American history to serve as Secretary of State. For eight years, during Bill Clinton's two presidential terms, she was a decision-maker and inside observer of the most dramatic episodes of recent years-from NATO's decision to halt ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, to the pursuit of peace in the Middle East. Now, in an outspoken memoir, she shares her story and provides a ringside view of world affairs during a period of unprecedented turbulence. Albright's story begins with her childhood as a Czechoslovak refugee, whose family fled rst Hitler and then the Communists. In America, Albright grew up to be a passionate advocate of civil and women's rights and followed a zigzag path to a career that ultimately placed her in the upper stratosphere of diplomacy and policy-making in her adopted country. Refreshingly candid, Madam Secretary brings to life the world leaders Albright dealt with intimately in her years of service and the battles she fought to prove her worth in a male-dominated arena. There are colorful portraits of such leading American gures as Bill and Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Jesse Helms, and of a host of fascinating foreign ofcials-Vaclav Havel, Yasser Arafat, Ariel Sharon, Benjamin Netanyahu, King Hussein, Vladimir Putin, Slobodan Milosevic, and North Korea's mysterious Kim Jong-Il. Besides these many encounters with the famous and powerful, we get to know Albright the private woman: her life raising three daughters, the painful breakup of her marriage to the scion of one of America's leading newspaper families, and the discovery late in life of her own Jewish ancestry and that her grandparents had died in concentration camps. Madam Secretary is sure to be one of the signature books of the early years of the twenty-rst century-a tapestry both intimate and panoramic, personal and public, a rich memoir destined to become a classic.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A very good "read".......2007-09-28

This is a very good bio ;read by the author which gives it some extra interest and dimension. This could have been a dry tome except for the little glimpses of Ms. Albright and her human side and how she used her humaanity to affect world policy. Further proof that " if women ruled the world..." is something to be considered. I believe that while Ms. Albright was at the helm as secretary of state , we were all a little bit safer.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Madam Secretary!.......2007-09-16

An admireable lady with lots of guts! She has accomplished some feats that would be nearly impossible for most of us. Learn the real facts about Madam Secretary!

2 out of 5 stars If you want to learn more about her as a person fine but lacking insights into important issues of her time.......2007-09-06

This tape provides a very good personal history of her as a person but, unfortunately, very little with respect to analysis of policies and issues, even those when she was foreign secretary. Is this not why someone buys a book like this to begin with? It's as if the book defeats its purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Really great book!!!.......2007-05-14

I really enjoyed this book, Madeleine Albright has a great sense of humour and this book is for everyone, who is interested in foreign affairs (and memoirs).

4 out of 5 stars Behind the Iron Curtain.......2007-01-04

Madeleine provides behind the scene insight into the fall of the Iron Curtain/Berlin Wall and the introduction of a free market economy in Central and Eastern Europe. Shortly after reading her Memoir I toured nine countries along the Danube and saw the importance of the spark of freedom that her father passed along to her. One person made a difference; especially one with her energy, language skills, and cultural familiarity. This book gives all of the nitty gritty details that made her the woman she is and gave her the strength to be the right person at the right time to usher in major changes in that part of the world. Fascinating!

                                        Book Description

On a cool, end-of-July morning in 1939, eleven-year-old Sylvia Couturié and her eight-year-old sister, Marguerite, escorted by their Irish nanny, "Wally," left their family's elegant French château for a fantastically ill-timed vacation. Expecting their parents to join them in a month, they embarked in high spirits on this rare adventure outside their privileged but tightly confined orbit of horses and hunts, servants and boarding schools. They sensed the distant rumblings of trouble on the edges of their world, but it would have been inconceivable that their long-awaited holiday would become a prolonged imprisonment, that their difficult governess would become their tyrannical jailer. It would defy belief to think that these daughters of privilege would soon be forced to fight for survival in a strange land as the world descended into war, with only the indomitable spirit of a little girl to carry them through.

Cut off from their family as France falls to the Germans, the penniless threesome is reduced to living in a miserable cottage without indoor plumbing on a remote strip of the Irish coast. As the months turn into years, Sylvia becomes aware that Wally is more concerned with preserving her status as their guardian than with securing their welfare and is slipping into dementia. Denied any meaningful education and cut off by Wally from all but the most fleeting human contact, the girls endure, saved only by Sylvia's extraordinary resourcefulness and the occasional kindness of strangers. Kept from home by Hitler's invaders, they are shocked and wounded by the pro-German sentiments of the anti-British locals. As they strain to make sense of their new and unrecognizable reality and are forced to deal with complex issues of bigotry and adult lunacy, the simplified yet profoundly astute worldview of the child is brilliantly conveyed. As German bombers fleeing British fighters during the battle of Britain terrorize the cowering threesome by dropping unused bombs in the ocean near their cottage, Sylvia finds strength in Churchill's voice on the BBC -- and promises him not to cry until victory is won, her touchingly unique contribution to the war effort.

The painstaking wait for word from home, the daily trials of survival, and the crushing loneliness of childhood are evoked with devastating simplicity. Reconstructed from Couturié's surviving childhood diary, this unforgettable narrative of the resilience of children chronicles her desperate fight for something approaching normalcy. In the process, she delivers an indelible portrait of an obscure corner of the earth, remote from the historic events of the day and yet the starkly beautiful backdrop for the often overlooked story of powerless children on the outer edges of a world gone mad. This is the heartbreaking memoir of a childhood interrupted, of a way of life lost and a new one found, of exile and homecoming in a world restored to peace but forever changed.

2 out of 5 stars Quaint story that begged to be more........2004-12-01

I wanted to have an emotional attachment with this book. I really did. The little girl perspective war time story drew me to its pages, but Couterie's description of her and her sister's calamitous four years of solitude couldn't hold me there. Coming from this perspective, perhaps we are supposed to be held aloof from some of the facts surrounding their isolation. Perhaps Couturie herself never discovered some of the mysteries behind their abandonment by their parents, who couldn't make it to Ireland on one occasion but had no trouble on another, or why no letters ever arrived from them but dozens came from the rest of the world. The book ended leaving me feeling more sorry that they made it home to parents who didn't seem to want them to begin with.
Excluding all the mysteries of the book, the characters themselves never seem real. There were very few times throughout my reading that I felt any sort of emotional attachment to them. Maybe Sylvia's physical isolation in the story rendered her incapable of exhibiting anything other than loneliness--the only true thing that is captured in this novel, that has the promise of being so much more.
To be fair, maybe I read this memoir to soon after finishing Angela's Ashes, which provokes so much sympathy and emotional attachments with its characters. Maybe Ms. Couturie wanted no more than to relay a quaint story, almost journal-like in its documentation of characters who are never introduced and places that are never described.
Overall, it is a good look at one person's perspective on the war and growing up in spite of it. One cannot expect it to be anything more.

5 out of 5 stars A Teenage Girl's Tragic Coming of Age During WWII.......2003-06-26

In this true-life story about her life during the WWII years 1939-45, Sylvia Couturie reminds us of the often ignored fact that the horrors of war also engulfed children, many of whom were sent by their parents to far-off lands in order to be safe from the invading Germans.
No one knew, when Sylvia and her little sister Marguerite were taken by their Irish nanny back to Ireland for a month in August 1939, that the children would not see home again until February 1945.
Sylvia takes us from her idyllic childhood years, growing up in a wealthy French family in the Chateau le Mesnil located in Normandy, to the desperate poverty inforced by an overly strict and calculating nanny, in a wreck of a cottage by the stormy Atlantic. There they had "no electricity, no running water, no bathroom, and the lavatory was outside down three steps next to the kitchen door". The nanny refused opportunities for their education or better housing. Fiercely Catholic, she shunned opportunities for the children to be educated or to have playmates for fear that their minds might be poisoned by the Protestants. Wally, the nanny, claimed to have been given sole guardianship of the children "for the duration".
Ms. Couturie's writing is cleverly absorbing as, by leaving out the answers to questions which arise in the reader's mind, she exemplifies the wasteland that was her life during those most important years when only her body and instinct for survival grew from little girlhood to womanhood. Using this technique, she carries the reader along with the suspense of not knowing the answers to obvious questions, thereby creating in the reader's mind the very void that was her life during the years of WWII.
The fact that she writes this memoir more than 50 years after the fact is a testimony to the life-long effects of the tragedies of war.

Recommended for all ages, but especially for middle and junior high school libraries.
