Herbaceous Ornamental Plants.......2001-12-28
Enormous book, excellent coverage. Black and white, limited color prints in special section. For each species complete data are given on usage, growth habit, season of bloom, culture, propagation, and diseases. Includes notes on many cultivars, although a bit dated now (1994 revision). This is where I go first for information on perennials. An example of a book which goes for information rather than looking pretty. Used as a textbook in college horticulture courses.
The Best.......1999-06-14
As an employee of a prominent local retailer of perennials, I find this book essential in identifying the plants our customers are seeking. A few descriptive words or a common name and we are well on our way to knowing what the plant was that "Aunt Millie" had in her garden. A gem of a book.

I have used this book as a textbook in Floriculture classes for the last 2 years and find that the brief, concise descriptions are more than sufficient for classroom instruction,as well as field use. Could have better (and more) color pictures, but I still give it 5 stars.

Disappointed with the delivery.......2005-06-29
This book was supposed to have two volumes. I only received one. I'm still awaiting Amazon's response to this, but for one volume this is way overpriced.
A Truly Exceptional Work.......2001-07-13
I have a modest horticultural library, including the AHS A-Z mentioned in another review, and I was thrilled to be able to add "Hardy Herbaceous Perennials" to my bookshelf. The authors are well known experts in the field of herbaceous perennials and they've compiled a truly remarkable book on the subject.
Whereas "A-Z" has as many pages as this work, it includes every type of plant - woodies, vines, conifers, annuals, perennials, water plants - you name it. Obviously you're getting a lot more entries on the narrowed down topic of herbaceous perennials in Jelitto & Schachts' book. You'll find more obscure perennials included in this work than in A-Z.
The entries are also more interesting than A-Z's. Each entry is from the author's first hand knowledge of the plant, more along the line of what you might find in Dirr's and Armitage's writings. However, they do also stick to the facts as in A-Z, so you do get the information you need, as in in origin, zone, plant requirements. A-Z is more clinical.
Since the book was written many years ago (this edition was updated in 1990 when it was translated from the German), some of the photos are black and white, though many are color. And, since the translation was done in 1990, taxonomic changes that occurred after that date are missing. Neither of these points is a drawback to buying this book. All the photography is excellent and, well, names change all the time, so even A-Z needs updating.
One last point to be made is that we in the United States tend to feel perhaps a little too self important. This is why A-Z is considered the 'best' by many US readers. While I wouldn't give up my copy of A-Z, I don't restrict my library to US publications. There is a huge amount of information originating in Europe and on other continents that never makes its way here. This does not reduce its value, just makes it less available unless we reach beyond the US. I have a friend who bought a shrub here in a US nursery and could find no info on it. It wasn't in A-Z or Dirr. The first 3 books I pulled off my shelf had it; two from the UK and one from Australia.
In conclusion, "Hardy Herbaceous Perennials" is one of the best additions I've made to my library in a long time. The price is a bit steep, but worth it.
There are better books out there.......2000-05-29
I purchased this book as a recomendation of my teacher in Hort Science, at The Ohio State University. When i recieved it, their was only 1 of 2 copies, which was outrageous for the price. The pictures were of poor quality, the information was in small amounts, and there was no detail. I showed this book to my teacher since he had never see it himself, and he laughed. He showed me a book he and I thought was going to be, infact The American Horticultural Society A To Z Encyclopedia Of Garden Plants is one of the best in his collection of over 2000 books on Horticulture. This book shows 6000 color photos, full descriptions on each plant, trees, details, and everything else I thought the Hardy perennial book was going to be. If you want to know the truth, their are many other books out there better than this one. For instance check out TimberPress.com, the maker of this book. It shows many other titles related to this title.

Among the upscale guides this one is a 'NOT'; and here's why.......2004-11-18
I now live in Peru eight months a year, and this year I will have reviewed five Peruvian guides (all listed below), and this Fodor's guide comes in last.
In the world of Peru guides there are two types. There are those guides that are written for the wandering/explorer/backpacker, the vagabond who will travel to the normal visitors' sites, but will also go 'off the beaten track'. The guides that target this type of traveler are: Footprint, Let's Go, and Lonely Planet [see my reviews].
Then there are the guides that target the traveler who doesn't own a backpack, has money (or least a credit card without a limit) and plans to visit only the main tourist attractions, i.e. Cusco [Machu Pichu], Puno [Lake Titicaca], Arequipa [Colca Canyon], and the lines at Nazca. Often these travelers are part of a tour group. The two Peruvian guides that target these travelers are Fodor's and Frommer's [see my Frommer's review].
Fodor's, though dated as a 2004 guide, is more out-of-date and incomplete than the other guides. For example, the guide's listing of 'North American Airlines' omits both United and Delta. Both have been in Peru for the past four years. The guide states that gasoline cost $2 a gallon (wrong). It was $2 a gallon in 2001, now it is well over $3 a gallon. More important are the quotes of restaurant's prices, in actuality the meals cost me twice what the guide quotes (hotels were about 20% more than the range quoted).
Though Fodor's does list the webpage of most hotels, none of the restaurants had a web listing (now all most every good restaurant has a web page with menu, prices and photos).
However, the most serious failure by Fodor's is its omission of location maps. These maps are very important when you are in a new city, and want to locate the nearest restaurant (or hotel) that the guide has recommended. Fodor's only has location maps for Lima (the last place that should be on your 'must see' list). Even Cusco, visited by 95% of all foreign tourists, has no restaurant/hotel location map, so you are on your own and this guide is very much "out to lunch" (pun noted). This is a serious omission.
This surprises me for normally Fodor's guides are great (I have reviewed over a dozen Fodor's guides). The guide does have very good itineraries and walking guides, and its recommendations for restaurants are worth following, but the other shortcomings make this guide only 'conditionally recommended. So, if you are not the backpacker type and want a very good upscale guide, Frommer's guide is your guide.
Helpful in planning.......2004-03-14
I've always liked Fodor's and this book is typical, good info, well organized, and geared to the average tourist. Lonely Planet is great but geared more for the student aged tourist - which I am not! And just published (I like getting the most current info before planning a trip - especially in a part of the world I don't have much experience with. I can always get around Europe on my own, but Macchu Pichu? I need some advice there.

Illuminating.......2007-05-23
This book is a very readable and well-researched biography of Luther Burbank. Dreyer outlines the main events of Burbank's life, from his family ancestry in Massachusetts, his early interest in plants, to his move to California and successful career as a plant breeder. Dreyer also discusses how Burbank's reputation was built and some of the controversies surrounding his work. Historical facts are well documented with endnotes. There is also an index.
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the life and work of Luther Burbank. Dreyer discusses some of the influences on Burbank's life. He also provides much historical background to put Burbank's work into context. It was fascinating to read, for instance, how much Burbank was influenced by Darwin's work, and how he rejected Mendelian genetics yet developed an intuitive sense of how traits were passed from generation to generation. Dreyer's discussion of the importance of Burbank's genetic discoveries was particularly interesting, especially when juxtaposed with George Shull's descriptions of Burbank's less than meticulous documentation of his methodology. Overall, the book provides a well-rounded overview of the life of one of the leading horticulturalists of the 19th century.
Even-handed definitive biography of Luther Burbank........1999-11-03
The "revised edition" (1985) is almost a completely new version of the first edition. Peter Dreyer has done remarkable work interviewing primary sources and unearthing new material. In Dreyer's telling of the life of Luther Burbank, the great American horticulturalist, it seems that no stone, no document, no illuminating background material is ignored. This is Luther Burbank, warts and all. The flavor and sense of this complicated man come across vividly, and the result is we see Burbank in all his paradoxical dimensions: successful plant-breeder who had two fruitless marriages; public image as sage and saint but seen close-up by some as a cold, defensive person; a man who could display profound modesty then sudden blatant self-praise. In this biography there arises a sense that he was a man way ahead of his time, Luther Burbank as the Patron Saint of the New Age.
informative and pleasing to nonfiction readers.......1999-10-25
In recent move for consilience of the sciences, I found myself in search of "A Gardener Touched with Genius: the Life of Luther Burback". He has made tremendous changes in American and international fruit and vegetable variety and acceptance. As physician I must say this improves our nutritional choices. I was thrilled to see the photograph of Luther Burbank together with Henry Ford and with Hugo de Vries in California. Hugo de Vries of the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands brought to light the writings of Gregor Mendel, furthered the genetic research, and wrote on Mutation theory in 1910. The life of Luther Burbank is good reading and will encourage future scientists to reach out and ask questions.

This is a very encouraging book about courage and faith in the face of a devastating terrorist incident. I was moved by LTC Bidwell and his wife's faith in God and each other as they fought their way back from the brink of death, after he was burned over more than 60% of his body on 9/11. One of my battle buddies was just badly burned by a bomb blast in Kabul, Afghanistan and is currently making this same recovery. Reading this book encouraged me about my friend's prospective future, after recovery.

This book is one of the most amazing faith filled stories I have read in a long time.
What Mel and Brian Birdwell went through after the tragedy of 9/11 and how it made them grow in the Chrisitan faith never giving in to others negativity is a true testimony of how God does work miracles. Brian Birdwell is a walking miracle.
This was the best of all the books I have read about people who have survived 9/11. This is one book once you read it, you will never forget it!
A very Sincere Couple.......2006-10-21
Brian is a friend of my son and his family and while visiting with my son, I was fortunate enough to meet Brian and his wife. They are a very loving sincere couple who have had their faith tested and have come out of this stronger than ever. I have recommended this book to others and am giving the books to friend and family because I think it tells a great story of love, devotion and faith.
James 1:2 Lived Out.......2006-08-07
This book is an amazing testimony of God's mercy, love and faithfulness to those who call upon His name. As Brian and Mel Birdwell share their experiences from the Pentagon attack and aftermath, the reader gets a vivid mental picture of much of what they went through. They share their pain and suffering, but they also share their hope and trust in the Lord which is ultimately what gets them through such an appalling tragedy. God is clearly glorified in this story!
Extraordinary testimony.......2006-08-03
Refined by Fire is an autobiography of a couple's experience of faith, endurance, and love of God. It evokes all human emotion.

20 Years ago, a club called Paradise.......2002-01-29
Non-Bostonians who have seen the "Live in Boston" U2 DVD were probably a bit puzzled, when halfway through one of the songs Bono sings out "Paradise...20 Years ago....A Club called Paradise". The line is a reference to a Boston club called "The Paradise" where they played one of their first shows in the US sometime in late December, 1980.
There is much discussion among casual U2 fans I know as to where they played their very first gig in the US. (Some say New York, some say Boston.) I decided to get this book and settle the argument.
Both sides are somewhat right. Although U2 played their first concert in New York, WBCN in Boston was the first radio station in the US to play their music. Carter Allen details how he picked up a import single of their first record and was able to get the station music director to ok him putting it on.
And such did greatness get its' start.
