      Book Description

Chicago gets the Avant-Guide treatment in this eye-opening exposé of the city's hip and hidden attractions. With razor-sharp editorial focus, this book breaks fresh ground by way of new discoveries and authoritative reports on stylish hotels, the latest restaurants, unique shops, and the best nightspots. Among the suggested lodging and itinerary options are hip boutique hotels like the Hotel 7 on Wacker Drive, Lula Café, a hot new style-spot with a deliciously eclectic menu nestled in beautiful Logan Square, and a ride on an "architectour" boat down the Chicago River. Later, you can check out the jet-set new boutiques along the Miracle Mile, followed by a visit to Foodlife, a bustling new restaurant bursting with singles, couples, and young urban families. After sunset, head over to Tomboy, a lofty lounge on Randolph Street that serves over 100 wines by the glass. Then arrive at the kitschy Club Foot just before midnight and take a whirl on the floor of this tremendously fun nod to new wave and glam rock. And that's just day one.

5 out of 5 stars Very stylish guide to a very stylish city.......2006-05-10

This is the second Avant Guide book that I have purchased and I plan to purchase more. In both instances I have found the content to be very useful in helping me plan and guide my visits to new cities. The choice of listings in this book is excellent, varied between well-known and not-as-well-known shops, restaurants, hotels and more. The short writeups of the neighborhoods contain all the useful bits, and the specific location information is well written and generally provides a enough insight that you come away with the impression of knowing just enough to be dangerous (or make conversation, or ask questions.) This is a good thing. The featured restaurants, stores, and hotels were all style-centric and wonderful to visit. Included are great photographs. It's hard to go wrong with this choice.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely THE BEST guide to Chicago. And here's why..........2005-08-16

I travel a lot, for both business and pleasure. I also think that I know Chicgo very well. I, of all people, don't need a guidebook for this city. I happened to come upon Avant Guide, and I was first attracted by the graphics. This is not a 'normal' guidebook. It's very stylish. Then I was taken by the terrific recommendations of places I had never heard of. Whenever I show this book to my friends in Chicago, they want to thumb through it forever. It's hard to get it back. The book is incredibly well organized and has lots of very handy maps. I recommend this very, very highly.

With more than 20,000 volumes of cat literature in existence worldwide, the reader of feline fables could benefit from a smart volume of favorite cat stories gathered from around the world. Luckily, photographer Robin Upward--with a little help from Cleveland Amory (author of such cat classics as The Best Cat Ever)--has produced Cat Tales: Classic Stories From Favorite Writers. Accompanied by Upward's charming color photographs of cats, the 10 short stories include such classics as Mark Twain's Dick Baker's Cat, Lewis Carroll's The Cheshire Cat, Anton Chekhov's Who Is to Blame?, and Colette's The Long-Cat. Cat Tales: Classic Stories From Favorite Writers is the purr-fect read.

                Product Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "systemic broad- and medium-spectrum antibiotic cephalosporins" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                  Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for systemic broad- and medium-spectrum antibiotic cephalosporins across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for systemic broad- and medium-spectrum antibiotic cephalosporins. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for systemic broad- and medium-spectrum antibiotic erythromycins. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study covers the latent demand outlook for systemic broad- and medium-spectrum antibiotic erythromycins across the states and cities of the United States. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 7,400 cities in the United States. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s state and of the United States is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state and city, latent demand estimates are created for systemic broad- and medium-spectrum antibiotic erythromycins. Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for systemic broad- and medium-spectrum antibiotic pharmaceutical preparations of injectable, semisynthetic single penicillins across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for systemic broad- and medium-spectrum antibiotic pharmaceutical preparations of injectable, semisynthetic single penicillins. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Sometimes reading like a botany class textbook, this volume is for gardeners who want to follow their plants from conception onward; it is also a great source for those wanting to start a nursery or catalogue seed business. Experts Terry and Mark Silber provide a wealth of information on how to propagate seeds and how to detect the difference between "responsible" catalogues and irresponsible ones, as well as illuminating sidebars about often baffling subjects such as soil pH and the importance of those hard-to-remember botanical names. The book is organized into general directions about germinating seeds--chapter subheadings include 'choosing the right container' and 'buying plants locally.' This general lesson is followed by focused directions for herbs and vegetables, and finally a specific guide to growing 39 vegetables and 48 herbs.

Not for the beginner or the halfway committed gardener, this is nevertheless illuminating reading for someone who wants to understand the garden's life cycle. And while I was taught by my grandmother that growing from seeds meant you were a "glutton for punishment," the Silbers don't seem like masochists at all--they just seem thoroughly immersed in the complexities of plant life. --Emily White

                                Book Description

An indispensable, wonderfully motivating growing guide, based on three decades of gardening experience, from the cofounders of Hedgehog Hill Farm in Sumner, Maine.

The Silbers tell us how to go about searching for just the right seeds, plants, and information; how to determine the number of plants we need; how to set up a germinating area; how to seed and transplant; how to use cold frames and other methods of "hardening off" our seedlings. They take us into the garden and explain how to evaluate soils and break up top growth. We learn about setting out plants; about direct seeding in mulched areas and open ground; about weeding, watering, and fertilizing. They share their wisdom about controlling insect damage and battling plant diseases; about accommodating animals while protecting crops; about harvesting, fall cleanup, and collecting, saving, and storing seeds from our own gardens.

Specific, detailed instructions are given for growing 37 vegetables--alphabetically arranged from asparagus to turnips--and 51 herbs, from angelica to woad. Well-organized charts make it easy to find essential information quickly, and drawings and photographs provide visual direction. Conveniently located sidebars give us guidance on such topics as growing hot peppers, planting mesclun, making sauerkraut, braiding onions, blanching cauliflower, growing moth-repellent herbs, making herb tempura and vinegars, and crystallizing flowers.

Here is a book guaranteed to inspire us to dig into the gardening catalogues and then into the earth to begin the adventure of producing our very own bountiful harvest.

I read this book and I use it as a reference for my job. I am a horticulture Specialist with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension. I received some great tips like cutting the seedlings of onions and scallions in half after three weeks of growth to help them come back stronger. The pictures and tips are wonderful. The passion that the authors have for gardening definitely show through in this book. This book is great for the beginner as well as the advanced gardener.

I ordered the book because of the author. I have long enjoyed his singing, and admired his song writing ability, so expected to enjoy the book. I was not disappointed. Makem gives us a tour around his favorite spots in Ireland, taking us to less familiar places. The travelogue is interspersed with anecdotes about his own experiences in these places. The book is well-written, enjoyable reading. Anticipating a trip to Ireland in the near future, I have just ordered my fourth copy of the book.
