                          5 out of 5 stars Don Coyote - A Wonderful Book.......2005-10-27

Don Coyote is one of my favorite books of all time. I have just finished this book - again - as I have done every year since 1990. This book is such an easy book to read - it is very hard for me to put this book down once started - and every year I am re-aquainted with Don, Coy, and the Hyde family. I have recommended this book (and the author) to my friends and family and cannot wait to share Don Coyote with my grandchildren.

                          5 out of 5 stars Don Coyote.......2005-09-04

Dayton Hyde has a wonderful command of the English language and paints pictures with words so you can actually see whatever he writes about. The story was engaging, humorous, informative, and well-written. It is a story of his own struggle to be at one with nature and habitat. He taught his children this love. He was a good father and a good husband, and he maintains his sense of wonder throughout the whole book. He draws the reader into his thoughts and world. I loved the book. I have now read two that Dayton Hyde has written, and this was my favorite, but I loved both books. He is a man I truly admire. He is a good teacher. I read the books before giving them to my son for Christmas, and I want to give other people his book. He shares his life with several coyotes on his ranch and learns their ways and their habits. I learned a lot. Thanks, Dayton!!!

5 out of 5 stars honest, strong and well written.......1999-08-17

Once in a great while an author tells a story that is both awe inspiring and down to earth at the same time. , Dayton O. Hyde, author of "Don Coyote" has compiled such a work. His tale is the great American novel that not only speaks, but also sings from the heart, Hyde's story is told from his own point of view, and is about his life as a struggling cattle rancher in Oregon and the amazing friends one can meet thru tolerance and understanding. His is a tale of the brilliance one gains when one stops and listens to his environment instead of destroying it. It teaches that one can live in harmony with all of its creatures. In Hyde's life he has experienced the hardship of honest work, the toils and troubles of dreams not working out, and the friendship of one extraordinary creature. When Don Coyote first came into Hyde's life he was but a nuisance, a so called "threat" to his cattle, a threat that by all of the old laws of the west needed to be poisoned and snuffed out of existence imeadetly. Hyde was a good rancher, a good husband to his wife and a good father to his children, an over all a good person. So when it came time to raise his rifle in Don's direction Hyde couldn't kill him, no matter the old myth that coyotes live to only kill sheep, and should be destroyed on sight .Hyde didn't know it then, but that simple decision to not take an "animal's" life would change his own forever. The New York Times Book Review says, "Mr. Hyde is an engaging writer, and he portrays his coyote characters as charming, quirky and almost irresistibly appealing. He also convincingly demonstrates the senselessness of those who kill the wildlife he loves." Experience the extraordinary true story of a man who decided to observe nature with not just his eyes but also his heart, therefore discovering that man is not the controller of his environment but very much controlled by it. Welcome one and all to a tale of true friendship and

camaraderie. "Don Coyote" was published by Ballantine Books and is available wherever Ballatine Books are sold. Also by Dayton O. Hyde: "The Major, The Poacher and The Wonderful One-Trout River," "One Summer In Montana" and "Thunder Down the Track."

Written for the beginning- to intermediate-level woodworker, this manual offers patterns for 17 innovative home storage projects designed to solve home storage woes. Selected from the pages of Woodworker's Journal, these beautiful and practical projects include a steamer trunk, a backyard barbecue cart, a colonial pewter cupboard, an old-time icebox, and an heirloom blanket chest. Each project is detailed completely with technical and exploded drawings, lists of required materials, and color photos of finished projects. Helpful sidebars include information on selecting the proper wood, raising panels, and finishing projects. Bonus tips on adapting period patterns and finished pieces for modern-day uses offer woodworkers additional value.

If you're a beginning wood-worker or don't have a lot of time, than this book would be wonderful. If you have a lot of skill and experience, however, I think you'd find the ideas too basic. There are a few more complicated projects, but I think if you are able to do them, you'd probably be able to figure out the rest of the projects on your own without the book.

                                      Book Description

“Here is a man who suffers so his readers can laugh.” — Daily Telegraph

Bill Bryson travels to Kenya in support of CARE International. All royalties and profits go to CARE International.

Bryson visits Kenya at the invitation of CARE International, the charity dedicated to eradicating poverty. Kenya is a land of contrasts, with famous game reserves and a vibrant culture. It also provides plenty to worry a traveller like Bill Bryson, fixated as he is on the dangers posed by snakes, insects and large predators. It is also a country with many serious problems: refugees, AIDS, drought, and grinding poverty. The resultant diary, though short in length, contains the trademark Bryson stamp of wry observation and curious insight.

This book did not have any of the comic timing I have come to expect with Bryson. It read more like a promotional pamphlet for Care Inc. I would not recommend.

The same excellent travel writing from Bill Bryson ... just a bit smaller, and the profits to charity. Worth a read.

CARE International, a global charity, invited travel writer Bill Bryson to visit Kenya to write about the group's programs there. This book is the result. The total text is about the length of a long magazine article in an outlet such as Vanity Fair or The New Yorker, and there are about a dozen pages of high-quality color pictures.

All the proceeds are donated to CARE. In effect, you're donating $12.00 to charity to read a very positive magazine story about CARE International. Bryson is a talented writer, his accounts are interesting, and CARE is a good organization.

So, overall I felt it was a good deal but the book is not particularly distinguished beyond this. It's not Bryson's best writing, but it's good enough. The most effective bits concern his fear of flying in small planes, as opposed to the people he meets. His discussion of CARE is a straightforward puff piece, but I can live with that.

                                      2 out of 5 stars Too Short.......2007-04-15

Bill Bryson's great, I love his books, and this is typical Bill Bryson, but it's too short. I realize it was written strictly as a fundraiser for CARE--okay. Still, I know B.B. could come up with a lot more material than this on an eight-day trip to Africa. I zipped through this book in what seemed like about five minutes. I was hoping for more.

Bill, hon, you could probably have written more than this whole book on the African slums alone, if you'd wanted to. One thing I found interesting is that apparently even the very bad slum he visited, did have public schools for the kids. We have kids adopted from Haiti. Similar slums in Haiti don't have schools--only people who can afford to pay fees can send their kids to school in Haiti. So even this terrible African slum is not as bad as it gets. Maybe Bill should do Haiti next.

I also think it's interesting that (similar to Haiti) you see little girls with their hair beautifully braided, even in the poorest slums (as seen in one of the book's photos).

                                      5 out of 5 stars Bill Bryson's African Diary.......2007-03-21

I totally enjoy Bill Bryson's work........I have everything he has ever written and have literally worn out my copy of "A Walk In The Woods". He has such a great sense of humor and warmth...my favorite author!

In 1871, John Devoy, a young Irishman fighting for Irish independence, came to the United States in exile. Yet even while across the ocean, this Fenian greatly influenced Irish affairs. Terry Golway's assiduously researched biography of Devoy chronicles a lifetime of activism in which he garnered tremendous financial and moral support for the cause in Ireland. Devoy was instrumental in both the Easter Rising in 1916 and the creation of the Irish Free State.Intimate details of Devoy's life and his work are artfully interwoven as Terry Golway captures John Devoy's valiant role in Ireland's struggle for freedom.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Fenian's Rainbow.......2001-11-19

Golway tells the tale of John Devoy, greatest of the American Fenians, and a pivotal, if hitherto neglected, figure in the history of Irish nationalism. Devoy was an longlived agitator, fundraiser, journalist, convicted Irish revolutionary and American refugee who bankrolled Parnell, Patrick Pearse and Michael Collins, butted heads with the Ulster Presbyterian Woodrow Wilson and the egomaniacal Eamon de Valera, and sacrificed his personal happiness in the process. Golway's prose is sharp and terse, with a propulsive narrative drive. A fine work of history.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable intro to Irish America's support for Irish rebels.......1999-05-16

I wanted to take the opportunity to write after finishing the book this past week; it's a good start for anybody curious about the roots of the support--in money, arms, rhetoric, and/or direct assistance--that Irish Americans have long given for Irish freedom. Often, the zeal of the "exiled children in America", as we're referred to in the Irish Proclamation of Independence from 1916, has surpassed that of those Irish we've left behind back home. Golway's book gives you some of the reasons why this disparity may have emerged--the force of the Famine, deportation of many Fenians, the Civil War's effect in giving unwitting assistance to many Americans who returned to agitate in Ireland and abroad, and the economic success gained by a few Irish emigrants and even more the sacrifices of a few dollars of many many more Irish who did the grunt-work which fueled the fortunes of those few, no doubt. Today, many of these emigrants' descendants are criticized as "plastic Paddies" who know little about Ireland beyond a few ballads and sentimental slogans. Both their critics and their supporters among the Irish Americans themselves should study this book, which uses Devoy's long career as a basis for a complicated study of how factionalism, quarrels, and a somewhat clumsy mixture of idealism and pragmatism all combined to effect change back in Ireland. And it should also instruct those who still support the Irish struggle today--it shows the pettiness and begrudgery that has often plagued U.S. efforts at grassroots aid. Although at times in the later sections, I lost track of who was outwitting who in all of the internecine backstabbing among the various claimants of The Cause, this is not to discredit Golway's skill. He had an intricate story to narrate, and he keeps it fresh and even witty, without pandering to his readers. His own experience as a journalist, a career shared by Devoy, undoubtably enriches much of the ambiance behind this sometimes reticent figure, too. I often wonder how a biographer, faced with a subject who's written his or her autobiography already, can calculate a new angle from which to view the person. Golway manages to integrate Devoy's own words sparingly, and by filling in much of the context which Devoy would have kept mum about (or not known of), the author presents a surprisingly relevant case study of the dangers and the seductions of trying to achieve an ideal in a messy world of spies, politicians, revolutionaries, businessmen, and everyday folks. In a time when many Irish and non-Irish alike are taking a renewed and justified pride in this island's heritage, this book introduces you to the American contribution to the Irish situation. (I also was impressed by the author's taking the time to comment on his work in response to a superficial criticism posted; his graceful manner of answering his hasty critic shows real class.)

3 out of 5 stars Accentuating the Negative.......1998-09-02

I hoped this book would confirm the above Synopsis and Kirkus and NY Times reviews which I already knew to be accurate as to Devoy, the subject. It is nicely written and contains much valuable and interesting detail. But, for reasons known only to the author, he selected nearly exclusively negative quotes to characterize Devoy and his tens of thousands of supporters of democracy for Ireland. It is on them, rather than on the genocidists opposing them, that the author pours the vocabulary of abuse. Only a psychology textbook could contain more synonyms for mental disorder than this book. It is full of "bitter; hate; hateful; hatred; grievance, old resentments; vengeance; murder; folly; ratholes of conspiracy; an Irish fight; a race of treacherous murderers; band of murderers; half-breed Jew; self-pity; divisive; slander; invective; irrational; acrimony; libel; firebrand; obsession; imbecile; foul; gross; vulgar; a murder society; destructive; decadence; raving lunatic; agrarian crime; wild tumult; fanatic; potatoes - neither man nor pig wanted more; perverse; turbulent; terrorists; violent; illicit; drunkenness and dishonesty; assassination; wretched quarrel; miserable; perfidy; stupid anger; vitriolic; contentious; treacherous; raged;" etc. Perhaps worst of all, the author indicates that it wasn't a republic (and all the benefits that flow therefrom) that Devoy et al struggled for, but for "a mystical, martyr-producing organism that could trace its bloody and tragic ancestry to Theobald Wolfe Tone." This grotesque slur that may well be explained by the author's execrable choice of sources: Cruise O'Brien, Edwards, O Grada, McCaffrey, et al. They constitute much of the "Potato Famine" school of Irish history which denies the existence and central role of the 75 British regiments that murdered 5.2 millions in the Irish Holocaust. Still; three stars is about right. It was worth the read if not the price. From it I learned that Devoy wrote an autobiography; "Recollections of an Irish Rebel" that I really want.
