          Book Description

During the years 1947-1952 the Cold War, the anti- communist foreign policy of the U.S. government, and the reassertion by the American Communist party of its allegiance to the Soviet Union, the international communist movement, and a literal Marxist-Leninist ideology gradually gave rise to an anti-communist hysteria and to the repression and persecution of American Communists. Author Peter L. Steinberg shows that both the Truman Administration and the Communist Party were in part responsible for the McCarthy era that followed. Both were reacting to the ideologiical warfare conducted by J. Edgar Hoover. Using his allies in government, Hoover took advantage of the Cold War atmosphere to demand demonstrable action against communists. The Truman Administration responded with a loyalty program that seemed to legitimze the American people's worst fears, leading to demands for further action. The Communist Party's decision to "go underground" played into the hands of its enemies. Steinberg sees the attack on American communists as a necessary prelude to the demand for patriotic conformity and as a factor contributing to the development of an internal political police.

          Book Description

The adversary system of trial, the defining feature of the Anglo-American legal procedure, developed late in English legal history. For centuries defendants were forbidden to have legal counsel, and lawyers seldom appeared for the prosecution either. Trial was meant to be an occasion for the defendant to answer the charges in person. The transformation from lawyer-free to lawyer-dominated criminal trial happened within the space of about a century, from the 1690's to the 1780's. This book explains how the lawyers captured the trial. In addition to conventional legal sources, Professor Langbein draws upon a rich vein of contemporary pamphlet accounts about trials in London's Old Bailey. The book also mines these novel sources to provide the first detailed account of the formation of the law of criminal evidence. Responding to menacing prosecutorial initiatives (including reward-seeking thieftakers and crown witnesses induced to testify in order to save their own necks) the judges of the 1730's decided to allow the defendant to have counsel to cross-examine accusing witnesses. By restricting counsel to the work of examining and cross-examining witnesses, the judges intended that the accused would still need to respond in person to the charges against him. Professor Langbein shows how counsel manipulated the dynamics of adversary procedure to defeat the judges design, ultimately silencing the accused and transforming the very purpose of the criminal trial. Trial ceased to be an opportunity for the accused to speak, and instead became an occasion for defense counsel to test the prosecution case.

Langbein's work is revolutionary in its use of the Old Bailey Sessions papers as a tool for scholarly research. For all who are interested in criminal trials in the Britain in the 18th Century, this work is absolutely fundamental.

          5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Resource.......2003-06-01

This a really terrific explanation of the history of our modern adversarial system and would be particularly useful to trial lawyers who work within the adversarial criminal system. (It's one thing to know that one CAN object to hearsay...but haven't you ever wondered why we do?)

                    Book Description

This new text will collate the CPS Charging Standards for the first time in a standalone volume. The Crown Prosecuction Service (CPS) have recently undertaken a systematic revision of the three documents commonly known as charging standards. These documents provide guidance to prosecutors concerning the appropriate level of charging in relation to assaults, public order, driving offences, and for the first time, as of November 2004, in relation to dishonesty, public justice and drugs. The OUP collated CPS Charging Standards are fully cross-referenced to Blackstone's Criminal Practice 2005, Archbold's 2005 and Wilkinson's Road Traffic Offences. In addition to the Standards this text contains a clear index, tables, the Code for Prosecutors and relevant CPS Policy documents in relation to offences such as race and religious crime, rape, domestic violence and offensive weapons. This highly portable book will be an invaluable resource and quick reference for the busy practitioner.

5 out of 5 stars Cats, not just for breakfast any more.......2000-07-26

So an old friend of mine who knew I orginally came from Michigan hands me this book. She said "You are always making fun of cats and cat people. After you read this book you will look at both differrently." She was so right that I just had to add comments here. This is a fun, educational, no nonsense and no softie to animals book. There are some sad places, some hilarious. There are some pictures and lovely cartoons. But mostly there is common sense. I will never look at declawed cats the same again. This totally inhumane and unnessary surgery makes a lot of money for so many people and must be stopped. There are also receipes for cat food. No, food to feed TO the cat. But I think Ms. Bruce would see the humor in that.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know, and more!.......2000-05-17

As a an animal advocate and former feline veterinarian, I am thrilled that Ms. Bruce has produced this interesting, readable, thorough, thoughtful book about how to be your cat's best friend. Her experience as a behaviorist lends extra validity to her suggestions. Good info for people new to the world of cats, as well as for hard-core feline enthusiasts. Anyone who's ever had a behavior problem with a cat (a large audience!) will find solid, practical, workable answers here. The unusual format makes this book particularly user-friendly. As the subtitle says, this book is a compendium of common sense advice, a rare blessing in today's world! And for those who are contemplating declaw surgery for their furry pals, read this book first! Annie Bruce tells you what vets don't want you to know!

5 out of 5 stars YOU GO GIRL!.......2000-04-27

Annie Bruce speaks out where others fear to tread. Ms. Bruce is the first to write about the side effects of declawing and processed food. I owned a few cats in my life time and hope before my life time is over declawing is outlawed. Ms. Bruce takes the time to put into simple terms how to raise a cat so that even a first time owner can understand. This book will create controversy but, it will also save lives. Annie Bruce, YOU GO GIRL!

5 out of 5 stars Addressing the negative review posted here.......2000-04-13

Yes, this book may be simply written and say nothing that one cannot find addressed more academically in numerous other books on feline behavior. However, unlike the negative reviewer, most people have not read all those other books -- nor are they likely to. They do not have the benefit of that reviewer's expertise and background. Cat Be Good speaks in simple, enjoyable easy to read language which is well laid out and prompts the reader to continue sniffing through it. THAT is why I will be giving it to people who adopt cats from me. I will put this one in their hands as part of the adoption process. Everyone in the household from age 12 up can learn from it. I recently adopted a cat to a White House staff member and another to a decorated Persian Gulf officer who flew 40 missions and whose plane went down 3 times. These people do not want to turn owning a cat into a science project. They want the "Readers Digest condensed version that doesn't give them a headache guide" to assist them and the cat to live together comfortably. Many in this (Washington, DC) area don't need homework assignment-type reading. This book IS simple and beautifully typeset with sidebars and cute stories and just plain fun and entertaining. It addresses serious topics (such as working with declawed cats who bite or have litterbox issues) and does so by offering a couple of tricks which WORK. I know there are many many theories and ideas about what works and what doesn't work when problems arise. I prefer to have cat owners with problems focus on the couple of techniques which are the most viable. --Joanna Harkin/Alliance for Stray Animals and People (yes we help indigent people too encountered as we assist stray, homeless and about to become homeless animals). http:4asap.org

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Terrific.......2000-04-11

I have a non-profit group in Washington DC to help animals and intend to give each new adopter a copy of this book. It is a blueprint for cat care. I am just so impressed with it. The author attacks declawing which so many people try to tell me is not a problem. I'm glad it goes so well for so many, but from my vantage point as a rescuer it doesn't go well for a lot of cats who start biting or develop "litter box issues." Almost no humane group allows it to be done ... and this book (a) tells why and (b) tells how to train your cat so you won't be tempted to risk bone surgery on your cat and open yourself (and the cat!) to a lot of potential grief. There are many more topics than this in the book equally well-addressed by the author. I could have written much of this book myself. It is excellent. Please -- of all the MANY books on cat care -- THIS is the one to visit (and revisit). It is a "manual" for catowners. And will improve the lot of many cats too!

The very popular, high quality tinplate toys of the mid-20th century from Nuremberg, Germany, are discussed in a historical setting in this delightful book. The chapters include 300 color photographs, information about the manufacturers(especially Schuco and Bing) and their markings, and essays on the past, present and future of this special toy industry. The mechanical figures, automobiles, trucks, trains, machines and associated buildings that are presented will remind many of the best toys of their youth. They are avidly collected today.

Many of the toys shown are from superb private collections and the Toy Museum of Nuremberg.

Very good use natural material (flowers, leaves, branches, etc.) to illustrate color combinations that go well in the landscape. Much better representation of color with photographic swatches of real material instead of printed color representation. From a gardener or horticultural view a real plus. Fun just to leaf through.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to practical use of color in flower garden design.......1999-07-22

This book really helped me to design flower gardens well. It has color theory and practical uses for all seasons. It uses both flowers and foliage and has some gorgeous combinations I would n't have tried. It is most useful for someone who knows the flowers that grow in their area and can create a working scheme with those flowers mimicking the color scheme in the book.

                                Book Description

The common charge laid against missionaries that they are destroyers of African culture is shown to be untrue of the missionaries treated in this book, who worked with considerable success to integrate Christianity and African culture. The author examines the endeavours of the missionaries from the perspective of the local Christians, who were not themselves interested in Africanization as such. One can thus find some missionaries defending - against the elected African Church leadership - the right of the Chagga Christians to circumcise their daughters, and Nyakyusa Christians refusing to use African tunes because the missionaries - influenced by National Socialism - professed both love for African culture and White superiority. This informative book, based on local and archival research at Daressalam University, is eminently readable. It features the first historical study of Bruno Gutmann, and provides case study material for teaching.

With each brief chapter telling the story of a young man's initiation to adulthood, the bay on which he sails becomes a universe of sorts, teaching him new lessons about making choices, adapting to change, and becoming his own person with every journey he takes. Filled with the spiritual wisdom and thought-provoking discoveries that marked such books as Walden,The Prophet, and the Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,First You Have to Row aLittle Boat is a wondrous and magical book that will enchant both sailors and non-sailors alike, but most of all, anyone who seeks large truths in small things.

This is a great book. The book really isn't about sailing. It's about life. The writing is outstanding. To all the fools who reviewed this book as a sailing instruction guide really missed the point. Too bad because there are few very poignant lessons in the text. It's not a book for caveman though. It's probably read better by either men who have some sensitivity or romanticism. I highly recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Mitch Ablom Goes Sailing.......2007-02-25

I'm a rower, so this book may have fallen into my hands by mistake. But I enjoy sailing one-man boats, too. There are some sweet stories in this book. I didn't hate it or anything. But the overall emotional effect seemed contrived or prepackaged. I don't object to the hokeyness--I LIKE hokey!--but very chapter is a pat lesson from sailing that maps perfectly to life. Give me a break. The effect is charming at first, but eventually it's cloying and a little silly.

Contra one of the blurbs on the cover, I suspect one's enjoyment of this little book will be inversely related to one's familiarity with sailing. The less you know the more you may like it. (This is not borne out by a quick scan of the reviews, but only a small percentage of readers write reviews. I suspect a microscopic percentage write negative ones.) There's a rowing book that comes to mind here: MIND OVER WATER. It just didn't seem that deep to me. It didn't seem as if the guy really knew that much about rowing.

Books like this create a nice illusion of emotional depth, in my opinion. There's a market for that, which is fine by me. Bad breath is better than no breath at all.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent/Must Read, even if you do not sail . . ........2006-12-05

My favorite quotation . . . "For the truth is that I already know as much about my fate as I need to know. The day will come when I will die. So the only matter of consequence before me is what I will do with my allotted time. I can remain on shore, paralyzed with fear, or I can raise my sails and dip and soar in the breeze." This is much more than a book about sailing. Bode's words ring of honesty and truth. This book inspired me to "raise my sails" back in 1997 and they are still up today.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2006-10-25

I'm a sailor & this is one of the worst books I have ever read. Even the cheapest "how to start sailing" books have more enthusiasm about sailing, unless the copy I have read was badly translated. I felt like the author needs to write a book for living and asks himself; what past experience do I have that I can use for this book? Its far-fetched analogy made me wonder the authenticity of the childhood memories. On the other hand if I needed a book for managment or life style etc. there are much better books which does not necessarly have to be about sailing. In short, I will not waste space in my limited library space by keeping this book.

                                    Book Description

The daughter of a Algonquin mother and an Iroquois father, Catherine/Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680) has become known over the centuries as a Catholic convert so holy that, almost immediately upon her death, she became the object of a cult. Today she is revered as a patron saint by Native Americans and the patroness of ecology and the environment by Catholics more generally, the first Native North American proposed for sainthood. Tekakwitha was born at a time of cataclysmic change, as Native Americans of the northeast experienced the effects of European contact and colonization. A convert to Catholicism in the 1670s, she embarked on a physically and mentally grueling program of self-denial, aiming to capture the spiritual power of the newcomers from across the sea. Her story intersects with that of Claude Chauchetiere, a French Jesuit of mystical tendencies who came to America hoping to rescue savages from sin and paganism. But it was Claude himself who needed help to face down his own despair. He became convinced that Tekakwitha was a genuine saint and that conviction gave meaning to his life. Though she lived until just 24, Tekakwitha's severe penances and vivid visions were so pronounced that Chauchetiere wrote an elegiac hagiography shortly after her death. With this richly crafted study, Allan Greer has written a dual biography of Tekakwitha and Chauchetiere, unpacking their cultures in Native America and in France. He examines the missionary and conversion activities of the Jesuits in Canada, and explains the Indian religious practices that interweave with converts' Catholic practices. He also relates how Tekakwitha's legend spread through the hagiographies and to areas of the United States, Canada, Europe, and Mexico in the centuries since her death. The book also explores issues of body and soul, illness and healing, sexuality and celibacy, as revealed in the lives of a man and a woman, from profoundly different worlds, who met centuries ago in the remote Mohawk village of Kahnawake.

1 out of 5 stars Dragging down Tekakwitha?.......2004-11-27

This is not a biography of the humble young Mohawk woman whose courage, holiness, faith, and purity earned her (as thousands who know and love her truly believe) that place in Heaven. This book, in the author's own paraphrased words, is meant to "bring Tekakwitha down from heaven." (And it is part of a gloomy trend to do just that - to as much as one can to bring one's subject down.) And, thankfully, despite over two hundred pages of trying, he has not succeeded in dragging her down.

There are people who were primarily historic figures and those whose lives are mainly of religious significance. Blessed Kateri (or Catherine, as the author prefers to call her) Tekakwitha was very clearly the latter. But this book approaches her from the former point of view, making her a postmortem pawn in the Jesuit's missionary work among the natives in Canada. The mystical and the supernatural (from a religious view) are ignored. The author seems even unwillingly to use the title of "Blessed" in reference to her.

At one point, the author even seems - in a very subtle way - to imply the Kateri and her closest friend (Marie-Therese Tegaiaguenta)were lovers. If, as he writes, there is "no reason to think they were lovers," why mention it at all? What does it serve?

The author dwells on each and any discrepancy in the original accounts by the two missionaries who knew Kateri during the last years of her life. (Even the Bible - in all its various popular translations - has its discrepancies.) Any story of any person, any account of any event is bound to have differences when told by two different witnesses. That alone is not enough reason to discount the differences.

His grim portrait of Kateri in no way accounts for the great numbers of people (not only Native Americans, but from around the world) who have a profound love for this holy young woman.
I can speak from my own experiences and observations that she has had a great impact even on people who knew little or nothing of her.

Historians may find this book of interest, but for those who have a devotion to this wonderful saint-to-be, there is little to recommend it.

On a personal level, I have been studying the life of Blessed Kateri for a number of years. My personal collection includes nearly a hundred works of literature on her. These range from reprints of the original biographies by Fathers Chauchetiere and Cholonec to fluffy, sentimentalized (to the point of being quite ridiculous) books for young readers.

I am also the creator of the web site mentioned on page 241 of this new book. I work for and look forward to the day when she is finally declared a saint.

I pre-ordered this book many months ago and read it with an open mind as I am always eager for new details on her life. For me, it was a dull read (the narrative flow seems uneven) with left me unimpressed (not with Catherine Tekakwitha) and with a very unpleasant taste.

Historians, cultural anthropologists, and the politically correct may find something of interest in this dry and dreary book, but for those who have a devotion to this wonderful saint-to-be, there is little to recommend it.

(I gave it one star because there is no lesser option and, well, my site was mentioned in the Notes to Chapter 9. I suppose I owe it something.)
