Customer Reviews:
What does it mean?.......2004-04-09
What does it mean when you write a book about New York, cover every 'neighborhood' you can think of, yet don't mention Harlem? For the author's information, Harlem is undergoing dynamic change and does have some wonderful restaurants to enjoy, i.e, Copelands, Sylvia's, Amy Ruth's! I just visited New York and did go to Harlem, but this book wasn't the resource. In general, I thought it fell short in alot of areas. I found more updated and useful information in the AAA guidebook and WHERE magazine. Save your money!
New Edition, New Information.......2003-03-21
The new 2003 edition of this great guide book contains a ton of new, updated information -- particularly openings, closings, and new hours and events in light of 9/11 and the major resulting changes in downtown Manhattan. It's still a good idea, as the book says in many places, to call ahead before you make plans based on hours and locations printed in any source, but the information has been right 100% of the time that I've used this new, fully rewritten edition.
Wrong information in this book.......2002-06-19
When you are limited on time the last thing you want to do is
waste it going to places in which have changed thier hours and
days they are open. Some stores had moved. It should have only been a 2001 guide not 2002! There were to many errors! They might have been related to 9-11 as far as the hours changing
However, it is not fun to waste precious time.
A wonderful guide for families visiting NYC.......2001-07-09
I highly recommend Ellen Shapiro's book. I just returned from a trip with 7 family members to New York and I used the book to help decide where to stay and planned our daily outings based on her excellent recommendations. The book is well organized and fun to read. Ms Shapiro's reviews of resturants and shopping areas are particularly helpful. I used this book along with the green Michelin Guide to New York City which contains wonderful maps and descriptions of the sights. These two books gave us everything we needed to have a wonderful stay in NYC!
Terrific for those living here as well.......2001-05-26
I moved to NYC recently so I'm not exactly the target audience for this book which is really geared at those visiting the city on vacation with kids. But I nonetheless found it very valuable as a new resident in terms of where to take my kids and the overall approach to keeping kids happy in New York. Certainly it would be even better for the tourist. In particular it has much information specifically targeted at teens which is an age group the other books on this subject mysteriously omit altogether in favor of younger kids. This one covers all age groups and is very well indexed plus terrific maps that I use even as a resident. It happens to be well written by someone who seems very expert and experienced. This same author has written a book on relocating to the New York area and it contains some more information about kids that is specific to residents such as how to find good schools and how to understand the public school system. This one is all the fun stuff, though.
Book Description
Each book focuses on 68 terrific ideas for family days, from museums and puppet theaters to skyscrapers and parks. Written by parents who live in the cities they cover, these books are smart about what kids like--and about what parents need. All the details for planning are included: addresses, phone numbers, admission prices, and age-appropriateness. "Hey, Kids!" info boxes provide fun facts and interesting trivia about the destination, and "Kid-Friendly Eats" features recommend three or four places to grab a bite to eat nearby. Fun to read and easy to use, these handy little guides make it easy to plan an enjoyable, hassle-free day with children in the world's most popular cities. They're perfect idea books for every city parent and grandparent, and indispensable aids for families on vacation.
Customer Reviews:
worked well for us.......2004-08-16
The best thing about this guide is the format. It is arranged alphabetically and each 'attraction' is on a two-page spread and contains description, tips, address, hours, age range, website, cost AND nearby kid-friendly places to eat and a 'hey kids' fun fact or something to look for when visiting this attraction. There are cross-reference lists by category (parks, museums, sports, etc.) and by neighborhood. This is a supplement -- not the only guide to carry since it has no maps -- but lots of useful information.
Useless.......2004-06-14
While this book does contain good descriptions of places to visit with kids it does not contain enough inforamation to function as a primary guidebook. It contains absolutely no general information about NYC, getting around, places to stay. It is not organized by neighborhood, has no maps, and gives no information on getting to the recommended venues. It also offers only very limited information on places to eat. In short, you can buy it as a supplement if you like (however, Frommers NYC with Kids lists all the same activities and provides all the necessary general info) but frankly I found this book to be useless.
Easy to Use.......2002-08-23
A quick and to-the-point guide. Well organized with info on neighborhood restaurants on the same page as the description of the attraction. And the size makes it easy to slip in a coat pocket or purse. Perfect.
A must have - especially for parents with young children.......2000-03-28
This book is so easy to read. All sites are listed in alphabetical order, so there is no flipping to the index that I had to do with other books. It gives a good, parent based review on many of the most popular NYC sites.

Good History and current information for Eastern Vineyards.......1998-10-30
This is a well written book on viticulture in the Eastern United states. The history was very good and broked down by state. The current state of viticulture needs updated and there is not enough dedicated to vinifera, but the American and French-American hybrid information was good.

Book Description
Sparked by an editor's comment that "creating a good column is like writing a letter to a friend," Mas Masumoto began a column--in the form of letters to friends, to his father, his daughter, and others--that has become a regular feature in the "Fresno Bee." Heyday Books is delighted to present the collected letters here, with their original watercolor illustrations by Doug Hansen.
Masumoto grows organic peaches and grapes on his family farm in California's Central Valley. Celebrated by chefs and farmers, a proponent of the Slow Food movement, he touches on the themes that have won him a loyal readership--taking the time to savor precious moments and people; the value of honest work; and the importance of protecting a changing landscape and disappearing way of life--Masumoto offers what few other writers can in this day and age: a truly personal touch.
Customer Reviews:
Letters to the Valley: A Harvest of Memories.......2007-01-16
Excellent very personal approach to life in the San Jaquine Valley. The art work integrated into the letters made the book even more enjoyable.
A taste of farm life.......2005-08-09
Through letters to his dad, neighbors, friends and sons, Mas Masumoto has show us a glimps of organic farm life in California. Farm life is hard, long hours during harvest seasons under the hot Valley sun, in return, it gives little financial rewards. What makes Mas choose such hard way of life: the family tradition, a good harvest after hard labor, memory of good, delicious, mouth watering sun crest peaches, the smell of his father's shirt, or the values that he will pass on to his sons. I am not sure, but I sure taste the sweet, delicious sun crest peach and feel the joy after seeing people savoring his labor of love.
After reading this book and other books from Mas, I feel the urge to shop more organic products and help out local farmers. This is a good read for us city folks who never experience the hard life of farming and wish we also have memories of good delicious fruits picked at the perfect time, not riped from a truck.
A fine account of one farmer's threatened way of life.......2005-03-05
"Past Tents: The Way We Camped" by Susan Snyder (director of Access Services in The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley) is a photographic and descriptive history of family outings during the first years of the automobile, and of campgrounds and campfires against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada, of the special gear and `helpful' hints for vacationing in the newly formed state and national parks and forests. "Past Tents" is a work of nostalgia, memory, and a yesteryear that saw the beginnings of ordinary people being able to sample and experience the extraordinary outdoors. An informed and entertaining history of early camping in the American West, "Past Tents" is superbly enhanced with historic photos and makes a welcome and much appreciated addition to academic and community library Popular Culture and American History collections.

Book Description
The last medieval queens of England were Margaret of Anjou, Elizabeth Woodville, Anne Neville, and Elizabeth of York - four very different women whose lives and queenship were dominated by the Wars of the Roses. This book is not a traditional biography but a thematic study of the ideology and practice of queenship. It examines the motivations behind the choice of the first English-born queens, the multi-faceted rituals of coronation, childbirth, and funeral, the divided loyalties between family and king, and the significance of a position at the heart of the English power structure that could only be filled by a woman. It sheds new light on the queens' struggles to defend their children's rights to the throne, and argues that ideologically and politically a queen was integral to the proper exercise of mature kingship in this period.
Customer Reviews:
Some Good Details.......2006-07-11
I wouldn't recommend this book as a "good read" necessarily, this writer isn't Alison Weir or Carolly Erickson, but there are good details throughout that illustrate the idea of queenship in the last half of the 15th century. The cover claims that it is about Margaret of Anjou, Elizabeth Woodville, Anne Neville, and Elizabeth of York, however don't be confused into thinking this is a biography of these four women. Rather the book is split into four subjects, such as ceremony, motherhood, households, etc. and uses those particular queens to illustrate certain points.
If you have a background in the subject area than this book offers some interesting details, however if you are new to the war of the roses time period than I would suggest starting elsewhere.
Not worth the money.......2005-04-19
This book was quite a disappointment. What little bits of new information you might glean were buried in disorganized details. Example of two sentences from page 192 on the role of the queen's family: "Richard II was more fortunate, and perhaps more careful, with his half-brothers than Henry III had been. John Holland and his nephew Thomas Holland were members of Richard's inner circle in the 1390s, but were spared by Henry IV, probably at least in part because John had married Henry's sister Elizabeth, but possibly also because their influence over the king was not considered as malign as that of the chamber knights of the 1380s, nor had Richard aroused resentment against them by so heaping them with honours as he had his cousin the earl of Ruland or William le Scrope." Huh? This is a book about Margarent of Angou, Elizabeth Woodville, Anne Neville and Elizabeth or York?
