Lying in the Indian Ocean, 35km off the coast of mainland Tanzania and six degrees south of the Equator, the archipelago of ZANZIBAR is one of Africa's best-known and most enticing destinations. Comprising the islands of Unguja and Pemba and a number of smaller isles and coral atolls, the very name evokes images of an exotic laid-back paradise replete with coconut palms, multicoloured coral reefs and, of course, miles and miles of white sands lapped by warm, translucent waters. The image is not without justification but there's a whole lot more to Zanzibar than beaches and tropical languor.

Its history, for a start, is one of the most turbulent and fascinating in East Africa, with more than its fair share of invasions, conquests, empires, intrigues and fluctuating fortunes, all of which have left their mark. The lingua franca, Kiswahili, has its roots in various Bantu and Cushitic tongues and a vocabulary peppered with Arabic, Portuguese, English and Hindi. Zanzibari culture reflects this mixture, too, not just in the architecture and monuments of Stone Town and the ruined cities and palaces scattered across the islands, but in a wealth of festivals ranging from dhow races and Islamic celebrations to bull fights on Pemba and the world-renowned Zanzibar International Film Festival. The latter is also the showcase for an equally vibrant music and dance scene, combining traditional Swahili music (taarab) with rap and reggae.

The archipelago's biggest and most important island is Unguja (confusingly also called Zanzibar island), 1651 square kilometres of low-lying fossilized coral separated from the mainland by the Zanzibar Channel. The capital Stone Town, on the west coast of Unguja, is one of the world's most alluring cities. Its Arabian-style labyrinth of narrow crooked alleyways, packed to the rafters with nineteenth-century mansions, palaces and bazaars, has enough of interest to merit several days of aimless wandering, and the town also provides a good base for visiting the rest of the island.

The wetter western side of Unguja is where most of the island's famous spice plantations are located, easily visited on an organized tour, as are a number of other attractions including ruined Omani palaces, Persian baths, a cave used to hide slaves, and a number of uninhabited islands off Stone Town whose surrounding coral reefs are ideal for snorkelling. Another viable day-trip is Jozani Forest, Zanzibar's largest tract of indigenous evergreen forest, which shelters several endemic species including the endangered red colobus monkey, and is usually combined with a boat excursion off Kizimkazi on the south coast in search of resident dolphins.

But Unguja's main attraction after Stone Town is its beaches. The most beautiful are on the east and northeast coasts and either side of Unguja's northernmost tip, Ras Nungwi. Although parts of the coast, notably the northeast, have been swamped by monstrous all-inclusive package resorts, development remains for the most part low-key, and beach accommodation ranges from homely bungalow-style set-ups to plush five-star resorts with all the creature comforts you could wish for. As well as standard watersports, scuba diving is offered by an increasing number of PADI-accredited dive centres and schools, some at the beach hotels, others in Stone Town.

Unguja's sister island of Pemba, 48km to the north, is quite a contrast. For a start, few tourists ever visit here and facilities are limited. Pemba's beaches are fewer and less accessible than Unguja's, though you're likely to have them to yourself. The island's main attraction is its fringing coral reef, offering exhilarating scuba diving and snorkelling, whilst terrestrial attractions include the pristine Ngesi Forest and a host of medieval ruins dating from the height of the Swahili trading civilization.

Imagine yourself fighting in the trenches of WWI or battling Japanese Zeros with your U.S.A.F. Corsair in the Pacific during WWII. These are some examples of battles in four different wars. Some related movies would be: The Crossing, Gettysburg, and Midway. I like this book because I am a big fan of historical wars, especially the Civil War. This was the best historical non-fiction book I've read.

Whether your a collector or just curious about a gun you saw somewhere, this book will identify it for you. Its sections on the most collectible firearms like the 1911/1911A1, Colt SAA and the like are very well researched. Although Festad's blue book is the industry standard its lack of pictures puts off a lot of guys new to the hobby. You won't regret getting this book.

Okay- say I lavished praise on other gun books... as the best and biggest. (Though they were all from the same publisher.) This one by Krause publications is the biggest, most comprehensive guide to firearms available. If you own over 5 guns like myself... then you should have at least one good gun identification guide.

If you love to learn flower arrangement but are frustrated by pretty books that don't show you HOW to make an arrangement, this is the book for you! There are detailed step-by-step instructions for each arrangement. As one of the reviewer had mentioned, the only shortcoming for this book is that some plant material may not be available in the US. Still, I don't see this as too much of an issue as it is not too difficult to substitute native plants with similar look and color. I highly recommend this to ikebana neophytes.

A most inspiring book on the essence of form and beauty........1998-08-19

Ms. Takenaka is a remarkable artist. Her ability to combine shape and texture of natural (and man-made) materials to reveal the simple elegance of Japanese style is inspiring. Each of the 60 or so examples have reasonable instructions. I gave it only 4 stars because some of the plant materials are not readily available and alternatives are not suggested. Nevertheless this book will generate many ideas of your own.

If your one of those kids that have to do one of those boring book projects for S.S. class, then do it on this. This is seriously an awesome book, compared to all the other books on the list you were given. The narrator in the book moved me. If your interested in the Armenian Genocide or anything in the Asian region then get this book for sure. And its Also a pretty good sized book so its not too small but not too long at all....get this book now.

This is a narrative of the genocide from an 8 year old's point of view. You will see things from a child's perspective with graphic details that are powerful and unforgettable. Kerop Bedoukian's style is top rate, right along with David Kherdian. The narrator's experience as a child gives a light hearted view of the genocide as well as the gruesome imagery innocently described by the 8 year old urchin. This book contains one of the most vivid and moving narratives you will ever read about the genocide.

I am reviewing the 1984 hardback edition of this book which was entitled "Some Survived. An Epic Account of Japanese Captivity During WWII."
Although this is not the first book on The Death March I have read, it is probably the best. It is well written and easy to read. The thing I liked best was the fact that not only did it give, in great detail, an eye witness account of the atrocities committed by the Japanese on American POW's in the Phillipines, it went on to describe life in the camps after the march, then on to a very detailed description of their treatment on the 'Hell Ships' that took the prisoners to prison camps in Japan.
This is not a book of despair only. It is also of faith, guts, determination, and final victory by Manny Lawton and a few others that survived this horrible period of time. It also prompts us to remember those that didn't. God Bless them.

This is one of those books that just makes you churn inside. The abuses and suffering are never ending during the length of the book. The detail provided could only have come from someone that was there. Mr. Lawton explains in vivid detail the degree of torment these guys endured. YOU NEED TO READ THIS!

Japanese Atrocities at Their Worst.......2002-05-29

This is an amazing report of an American soldier held captive by the Japaese in the Phippines and the island of Japan itself for three and one-half years after his capture in World War II.
How he could remember the details of brutal beatings, starvation and resulting illnesses is almost beyond belief. His experiences with fellow prisoners runs the gamut from the highest heroism to utter selfishness. Every day he looked forward to freedom, only to be repeatedly disappointed until that memorable day when he met the invading U.S. forces and he knew that he was free ,atlast! The dscription of his home coming is heart wrenching as it was for all of us on our return. This book's contents are enough to make almost anyone swear to never buy another Japanese produced article.

This account is the best I've read of many books on the POWs of the Japanese. It puts the reader in the gruesome reality of the Bataan Death March and all that followed in Camp O'Donnell and the hellships.
