I have followed David Smyth's work for many years and was excited to find this recently published book. When I opened it, I was astounded. What a beautiful volume. I think there are over 600 color plates. The book is exquisitely printed and laid out, a real jewel. I wasn't aware of his early work, and was amazed at how diverse and interesting that is as well. This book is a must own for any contemporary art lover. Smyth continues to stand out as one of the freshest talents working today.

In Ranch of Dreams, Cleveland Amory recounts his adventures traveling hither and yon for the Fund for Animals, saving creatures from human excesses. A zoo lover since being introduced to Anna Sewell's Black Beauty during childhood, Amory has made a great project of founding and maintaining an East Texas ranch that serves as a sanctuary for endangered and abused creatures, from burros evicted from the Grand Canyon to a great menagerie of kinkajous, foxes, pigs, aoudads, buffalo, and elephants, among others. He is a gracious and knowledgeable commentator on the lives of these animals, and a man of considerable tact, which must have helped when dealing with, say, the Defense Department in his efforts to save wild goats from a California island used for gunnery practice.

                  Book Description

NonfictionLarge Print EditionAs a child, Cleveland Amory read Black Beauty and dreamed of having his own animal ranch. Now Amory is known for his tireless efforts on behalf of animals as the founder of The Fund for Animals. What most dont know is that he realized his childhood dream and established Black Beauty Ranch in East Texas. With warmth and humor, Cleveland Amory tells remarkable stories some heartbreaking, others hilarious of the countless animals whove found safe haven at Black Beauty Ranch.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate in the writing style department.......2005-06-01

I generally enjoyed "Ranch of Dreams" - what animal lover couldn't? Heartwarming stories of animal rescues written in a quick and oftentimes witty style.

However, it is that same writing style that occasionally brings Amory from the respectable "pro-animal" into the realm of "anti-human." He becomes argumentative and defensive at times, making me want to argue right back, despite the fact that I agree with him.

Despite this, Amory's book is a worthwhile read, though I would recommend seeking out a cheap used copy and spending the money you save on "Best Friends: The True Story of The World's Most Beloved Animal Sanctuary," another lovely book on saving animals in need.

5 out of 5 stars Ranch of Dreams is Excellent!.......2004-07-20

I absolutely loved this book. Although difficult to handle when reading about the abuse of animals, it is so well written that you just can't put it down. Cleveland's sense of humor shows through his writing and makes this book a must-read! And, if you haven't been to the Ranch of Dreams - you must go!!! Black Beauty Ranch in TX is the most beautiful place in the world - and the beauty is so much more than what meets the eye!

                  5 out of 5 stars Maybe a life-changing book........2003-08-05

Cleveland Amory wrote of his beloved cat Polar Bear, "Heaven will be no heaven for me if Polar Bear is not there."

I say heaven will be no heaven for me if Cleveland Amory is not there. Anyone with even a small soft spot in his heart cannot fail to be moved by the stories of the Black Beauty Ranch and the animals of various species that call it home.

Someone recently asked me what I'd do if I didn't need to work for a living. I think I'd want to go to Murchison, Texas and help care for the ranch's residents.

5 out of 5 stars Ranch of Dreams Made Me Proud To Be A Texan.......2001-11-13

Having never read anything by Cleveland Amory before I was quite surprised to learn of Black Beauty Ranch in East Texas.Ranch of Dreams opened my eyes to what really goes on behind the circus tents, most haunting and heartwrenching the cruel treatment of the elephants, ripped from their mothers and herds and beaten into submission.Dear Mr Amory;he passed before writing a follow up book. The book is well worth the read,a lesson in human compassion, and when you are finished, pass it on to a friend.

3 out of 5 stars Ranch of Dreams left me wanting more........1999-03-05

I guess I just expected more from this book. I wanted more personal experiences and more discussions of individual animals that had been brought to the ranch. I feel that the book was to "general" in its approach. It just wasn't personal enough.

                        Book Description

The emergence of the idea of Baltic Sea unity and of Baltic cooperation seem to be the issues which unify the two big epoch-making periods, the end of the First World War and the end of the Cold War. In both periods, the Baltic Sea connection has been seen to offer a coordinate for remapping the location of the eastern Baltic nations, the Estonians and Latvians, in particular. Why has the Baltic Sea area played so important a role as a construct of the new Europe? This is the question examined in this study, which focuses on the period after the First World War when the disintegration of European multinational empires meant a shift in the international system from the hegemony of a few great powers to the heterogeneity of small states. As a part of this process, the concepts of sovereignty and national self-determination were redefined by the small states themselves so that they would manage to find their place in the world of the great powers. One expression of this transition period was a lively Baltic cooperation, which attained an exceptional pitch of intensity in the Europe of its time.

                              Book Description

The continuing story of a young American living as a fugitive on the Isle of St. Margaret's, he has survived the court-martial ("The Flight Lieutenant's Court Martial - Part 2") and is freed from its burdens in time to resume his duties with the Air Militia on the very eve of Independence. This story follows the island and its people through Independence Day (April 15, 1973) and beyond. Everyone expects all out fighting from the Communist guerrillas to commence as the last strains of the new nation's anthem "O Fair St. Margaret's Island Home" die away at the Mahali...but the days pass without a shot fired. The military cannot detect them and nerves are rubbed raw waiting for them to strike. On a routine flight from New Britain back to the capital, the young man and Lieutenant Colonel Romulus Augustulus Jones (third-in-command of the Militia) spot what looks like a secret base on the island's uninhabited south coast. Efforts by the protagonist to get something done about it meet with frustration...frustration made worse by Jones suddenly denying they saw anything. Convinced there is a Communist somewhere above him in the Government, and that the nation's survival is at stake, the young American risks imprisonment...or worse... seeking outside help.

As is his usual style, John W. Cassell once more illustrates his superb ability to tell a story. An attractive woman, a plane ride, deadly secrets; all artfully woven together. I am never disappointed when I read Cassell's work.

                                        Book Description

The lightheartedness of these works both masks and enhances their engagement with provocative issues of continuing interest today: conduct in society, literary practice and moral praxis, relations between men and women, the value of received wisdom. This volume offers texts of two medieval French poems by Christine de Pizan: the Epistre au dieu d'amours and Dit de la Rose, together with the first translation of these poems into modern English. The medieval English adaptation of Christine's Epistre, Thomas Hoccleve's The Letter of Cupid, is likewise presented here, and provided with a modern English translation. Finally, an eighteenth-century version of Hoccleve's poem, George Sewell's The Proclamation of Cupid, is edited here for the first time. The editions of these poems by Christine, last edited a century ago, are based on the most recent scholarly findings. The edition of Hoccleve's poem reproduces its authorial punctuation from manuscript for the first time, and thus sheds light on the vexed question of fifteenth- century English metrics. The lively modern English translations of both can be used by students, scholars, and the general reader.

Harvard professor, Washington power broker and former Gore 2000 campaign chair Donna Brazile's life might make for a pretty entertaining Hollywood movie if an actress could be found gutsy enough to take on such a complex and intimidating leading role. From humble blue-collar Louisiana beginnings as one of nine children, Brazile went on to organize voter registration drives, marches to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr., and ultimately national political campaigns. In her memoir Cooking With Grease, Brazile shares candid perspectives on her employers and causes. And while Mike Dukakis and Dick Gephardt fans will be pleased to know their men are included, it is the insights on the charismatic preacher/activist/presidential candidate Jesse Jackson and Al Gore, whom Brazile insists won the controversial 2000 election, that make this a must read for devotees of modern political history. Her accounts of being backstage in the Gore camp shed valuable light on the tense political climate of that year's election and post-election recount mess in a way that only a select few from either the Bush or Gore campaigns could legitimately offer. Still, none of the candidates shine quite so brightly in this book as the author herself. Washington is, after all, operated, with a few exceptions, by moneyed white men and for a black woman from a humble background to succeed requires determination, a quick wit, and a powerful intellect. As Brazile climbs the political ladder, those qualities come in to sharp relief. But while Cooking With Grease is inspirational, and Brazile really ought to be auctioning the film rights if she hasn't already done so, it doesn't preach, inspiring by example rather than exhorting the reader to follow Brazile's own course of action. --John Moe

Cooking with Grease is a powerful, behind-the-scenes memoir of the life and times of a tenacious political organizer and the first African-American woman to head a major presidential campaign.

Donna Brazile fought her first political fight at age nine -- campaigning (successfully) for a city council candidate who promised a playground in her neighborhood. The day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, she committed her heart and her future to political and social activism. By the 2000 presidential election, Brazile had become a major player in American political history -- and she remains one of the most outspoken and forceful political activists of our day.

Donna grew up one of nine children in a working-poor family in New Orleans, a place where talking politics comes as naturally as stirring a pot of seafood gumbo -- and where the two often go hand in hand. Growing up, Donna learned how to cook from watching her mother, Jean, stir the pots in their family kitchen. She inherited her love of reading and politics from her grandmother Frances. Her brothers Teddy Man and Chet worked as foot soldiers in her early business schemes and voter registration efforts.

Cooking with Grease follows Donna's rise to greater and greater political and personal accomplishments: lobbying for student financial aide, organizing demonstrations to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday and working on the Jesse Jackson, Dick Gephardt, Michael Dukakis and Bill Clinton presidential campaigns. But each new career success came with its own kind of heartache, especially in her greatest challenge: leading Al Gore's 2000 campaign, making her the first African American to lead a major presidential campaign.

Cooking with Grease is an intimate account of Donna's thirty years in politics. Her stories of the leaders and activists who have helped shape America's future are both inspiring and memorable. Donna's witty style and innovative political strategies have garnered her the respect and admiration of colleagues and adversaries alike -- she is as comfortable trading quips with J. C. Watts as she is with her Democratic colleagues. Her story is as warm and nourishing as a bowl of Brazile family gumbo.

I had the chance to meet Ms. Brazile at a college graduation. She was the commencement speaker and I found her surprisingly down to earth and a good natured. The book adds to my opinion of her. As a woman in a man's world, she handled herself in good fashion.
                                        Pick it up and enjoy!

"Cooking With Grease" will be interesting for any political junkie though obviously liberals will enjoy it far more than conservatives. Brazile gives a highly detailed inside look at how Democrats approach elections but a problem is her writing style, which sometimes obscures critical points. As she discusses Eleanor Norton's campaign, she says a tax problem was resolved thusly: "We decided to just write a check, no matter what the amount was..." Now doesn't that sound like the campaign paid the candidate's back taxes? In another case, she is describing the fact that the campaign staff is tense and needs some time for relaxation. She explains that campaigns are "notorious for sexual escapades and relationships." Then they (Brazile and Tony Coelho) plan a party for the campaign workers and "[t]he kids got down all night and so did Tony and I." Doesn't that seem to imply that she and Tony had an affair. Yet another passage left me scratching my head: "I decided to help Craig, the former campaign manager, line up clients to continue helping me out with my new duties." Does this mean she sent business Craig's way in order to increase his revenues so he would be available to help her in her campaign duties? I am sure she would be appalled to have given these impressions but couldn't she write more clearly?
Also, can someone get this woman a dictionary and explain to her that the word "literally" is not a contraction of "like, totally" as in a situation that was "literally down to the wire."
Conservatives will have a hard time getting through this book; I know I did. Brazile has a vision of America where people are perpetual victims in need of protection from the evil rich. She believes poverty and homelessness are uniquely Black issues (God help the White politician who says that.) She adores the electoral process until anyone other than Democrats want to play. For example, she boasts of her ability to assemble large crowds on short notice but derides Republicans for "bringing in people to create a mob-like atmosphere."
Brazile, or someone much like her, will be running Democratic campaigns in the near future. It will pay to understand how they think and what their tactics are like.
P.S. In true liberal fashion, my library copy has been annotated in pen.

This is a wonderful, informative book that tells it like it is. I've always enjoyed watching Ms. Brazile on CNN and her book made me like her even more. This memoir is so powerful and inspiring that it will make you want to run for public office, or at the very least, go out and register to vote!

Ms. Brazile is obviously a woman of passionate convictions and strong will--she would have had to be to fight her first successful political fight at the age of nine! A triumphant story about a woman who grew up poor only to become the first African-American woman to head a major presidential campaign, this should be a must-read for all high school and college students. Add it to your collection!

Brazile is incredible. I am a fan of her. She is a movie star (sorry for the analogy, Donna) just for whom you would see the movie. Up from poverty, Harvard, the really high rollers! Wise, insightful person. I caught her at the Dade County Book Fair last November and was mesmerized. So there you are you Republican Goose Stepping, sexists! But . . . .

Too much rhetoric about the evil empire. If you can only win by telling the world that there's a conspiracy from the industrial, military, oil companies and facists in the TV studios hiding behind the bulk of the Rathers and the Brokaws, there's something wrong. We're adding 2+2 and coming up with 7. Come on. There's a problem. Let's solve it. Let's talk. You have all those states in the middle and they're all the same color. It may irritate you. May make you livid. But let's not use that tired rhetoric from the sixties. Please.

I remember a video of Al Gore in the 2000 campaign accepting a bag of money from a Buddist Monk somewhere in California. Later he said he didn't know what it was (probably not a baloney sandwich bag lunch Al) and still later he was confused as to why he was there in the first pace. But the thing I remember was the look on his face. You want to see the same look? Dig up in the archives the picture of Gary Hart in 1988, 20 points ahead of his closest candidate competitor, sitting on the yacht in the Atlantic with the breathtaking Donna Rice on his lap. It's the look of . . . is that a camera?

So I am a huge fan of Ms. Brazile and I root for her and if she ever makes it to Ann Arbor, I'm there. I just find it tedious for our National electorate ON BOTH SIDES to throw Molotov Cocktails at eachother, and then deny it.

Brazille is brilliant although she's still spinning. 4 stars. Larry Scantlebury

                                        4 out of 5 stars Political Gumbo.......2005-02-06

The 2000 Presidential election was a devastating experience for the Democratic Party and for the country. Voting irregularities and dirty politics blazed the trail to the White House for George W. Bush. As the Democrats struggled to recover from an election that was ultimately decided by the United States Supreme Court, Donna Brazile, the manager of the Gore-Lieberman campaign, pondered her political future. She had made history as the first black person to head a major presidential campaign, now it was time to pick up the pieces and decide what was next in her life. Ultimately she would turn to her humble beginnings for support and guidance.

Donna Lease Brazile was born December 15, 1959, in New Orleans, Louisiana, one of nine children in a poor working class family that was low on money but rich in pride and intelligence. She started her illustrious political career at the age of nine and never looked back. Donna went from registering people to vote in her neighborhood to planning marches to have Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday declared a national holiday. However, her key role has been twofold: to get out the black vote during elections and to make sure that the black vote is not taken for granted by the Democratic party. She takes the political process very seriously and wants to bring the same keen awareness to others.

COOKING WITH GREASE: Stirring the Pots in American Politics by Donna Brazile is the true story of an enterprising and determined woman whose passion for politics and for her people propelled her to lead a major campaign. She is a great storyteller and the fact that each chapter was named after a tasty New Orleans dish made reading this book even more enjoyable. I am very inspired by the author's story and I am much more motivated to become a part of the political process.

                                        Book Description

Ernie O'Malley (1897-1957) was one of the most talented and colourful of modern Irish republicans. An important IRA leader in the 1916-1923 Irish Revolution, this bookish gunman subsequently became a distinguished intellectual, and the author of two classic autobiographical accounts of the revolutionary period: On Another Man's Wound and The Singing Flame. His post-revolutionary life took on a bohemian flavour. Travelling extensively in Europe and America, he mixed with a wide range of artistic and literary figures, and devoted himself to a variety of writing projects. In his IRA career he mixed with revolutionaries such as Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera; in his post-IRA years his friends included Samuel Beckett, Louis MacNeice, John Wayne, and John Ford. This important new thematic biography draws on previously unseen archival sources, and introduces O'Malley to both scholarly and general readers. O'Malley's post-revolutionary life was as turbulent as his IRA years, and illuminates many persistent themes of Irish history, ranging from the origins and culture of militant republicanism and the complexities of Anglo-Irish relations to the development of intellectual and artistic life in twentieth-century Ireland. This exciting new biography will be essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the background to modern Irish politics and the past and present role of the IRA.

Professor English, of Queen's University, Belfast, divides up this critical biography into sections that investigate Ernie O'Malley's life, his ideas, his writings, and his career after the publication of his well-known memoir On Another Man's Wound. The title refers, as English reminds us, not to (as Gerry Adams propounded) the slogan that one generation's freedom fighters must rise up upon the fallen bodies of a previous generation's failed fighters to seek victory, but to the fact that it's easy to withhold pity when someone else is doing the bleeding and the dying. As a medical student before the 1916 Rising, O'Malley knew this to be more than a metaphor. His choice in a few years to take up arms against the Crown only deepened his empathy, and his awareness of the divisions that tore Irish into pro- and anti-British soldiers and then pro- and anti-postwar Treaty soldiers once the British had left--most of the island. He never confused anti-British tactics with anti-British prejudice, and one of the most memorable parts of his memoir is when he tells of his love for Shakespeare's sonnets, a copy of which he took into battle.

O'Malley was a rarity among those who were involved in the Irish war against Britain for independence that followed the failed Rising. He only was periphally involved, if at all, in 1916, but his powerfully described, deeply detailed accounts of his involvement in the war that followed show a university-educated, well-mannered, upper/middle-class Catholic who chose to lead troops most often from disparate backgrounds than his own into a guerrilla war to obtain the ideal Republic as a reality.

If you want to read "Another Man's.." follow it up with his unfortunately incomplete "The Singing Flame," which tells of the civil war that followed the war for independence and his involvement in more pain, idealism, and compromise. English, by separating the life from the critical accounts, avoids having to recapitulate too lengthily what O'Malley himself conveys so well of his war experiences. He makes the biography briefer of the early years to elaborate upon his later wanderings in the Western US, his art collecting and book collecting interests, and his troubled domestic life.

English succeeds best when he goes beyond the facts of O'Malley's life. He then provides valuable considerations of how one could be "IRA & intellectual" by considering how the Catholic intellectual class both succeeded and failed in its attempts to make the Free State into what the Republicans had fought for, and then failed to achieve. The writers from the struggles tended to be on the losing side to a man, and the sense of futility and frustration, English shows, made it imperative for many of the most capable and talented leaders Ireland could have kept to guide the new nation instead to seek exile from the state that emerged, full of censorship and censoriousness.

This is not a long book, but one finishes it with a sense of sadness for the ultimate disappointments O'Malley and his peers endured as they sought aesthetic satisfactions to replace the loss of an Ireland for which they had fought so long, and to escape or endure the reality of a narrower state, intellectually and ideally, than they had lived and seen others die to achieve.

Prof. English has subsequently published "Armed Struggle," an IRA history, and earlier had produced "Radicals & the Republic"--an account of the leftists who tried to advance 1916 ideals in a post-1922-39 Free State unsuccessfully. He has co-edited "Raids & Rallies," the Civil War letters of O'Malley.
