Book Description
Picturesque tumbledown cottages, their gardens ablaze with roses, delphiniums, and hollyhocks, inspired a whole generation of Victorian artists. 130 inspired works by painters such as Helen Allingham, Claude Strachan, and David Woodlock, along with forty others, compose a fascinating and splendid historical record of the flowers and features that characterized the Victorian English country garden. "...a cornucopia of entrancing watercolors."--The Field. "As happy a book as you are likely to meet."--Arts Review.
Customer Reviews:
Sensational writing and illustrations.......2004-04-17
This book made me turn to gardening and the art world. He is fantastic and I strongly ( emphasis on strongly)recommend buying his books including Victorian Cottages. The next month after I had read his book I retired and followed my love to gardening and art. Since then I have bought 5 Allingham's and many others. My gardens have transformed I was on Gardener's world.

Book Description
This volume examines Scotland's experience of and reaction to European expansion between c. 1600-1800. Although Scotland lacked an independent empire in the seventeenth century, it gained unfettered access to the global empire of England after 1707. The volume argues that, beneath this seemingly stark discontinuity, there lay considerable continuity. Using a series of case studies on Scottish governors serving in the empires of Denmark-Norway, Weden, and their eighteenth century Russian and British equivalents, it highlights the previously underestimated chronological and geographic extent of Scotland's engagement in European expansion. It concludes that a blend of informal networks of kinship and local association complemented the official status of Scottish governors and produced a relatively distinctive and effective strategy for participating in imperialism.
Book Description
What we have here is another mighty slim volume from Michael Feldman, best known (when known at all) for his public radio show "Whad'ya Know" (sic). Feldman, who spouts off about things he knows "not much" about weekly, here writes them down:
· how to get your own radio show and what you can do with it once you do
· paranoia
· marriage (or as Feldman likes to refer to it, "a long-term bad relationship")
· Hitler
· SUVs
· child-rearing (although it sounds like it's the author who is being reared)
· a number of short pieces on places he and his crew have visited for their "remote possibilities"
· more references to "gentiles" than absolutely necessary (seems to be an issue for Feldman, although he is tickled with the
notion that, to a Mormon, he is one)
· some attempts to misrepresent scientific or social research for humorous purposes
· many personal revelations that prove the examined life is not necessarily worth living either
· and pages and pages of fluff.
Mr. Feldman has not been compared, to our knowledge, to S. J. Perlman.
But here is some of what Michael Feldman says in Something I Said:
"The paranoid no longer is: paranoia has outlived its usefulness when everybody is out to get us."
"Take the phrase 'no problem': I can use it, although it is the very opposite of my two-word world view ('Nothing works')."
"Whatever latitude beauty may have in the eye of the beholder, funny is not readily apparent to all, and, who knows, they may be right. More importantly, they may be bigger."
Includes a music CD by Michael Feldman and John Sieger.
Customer Reviews:
Heir Apparent to Dave Barry.......2004-10-27
In his hilarious new collection of reflections upon marriage, family, and life in the midwest, Michael Feldman reveals himself to be the heir apparent to Dave Barry. Feldman, host of public radio's "Whad'ya Know?" gives Garrison Keillor a run for his money as the humorous voice of the heartland--with a heart. Included is a music CD "My Life, the Musical." songs Feldman has written over the years with John Sieger, who also provides the riotous cartoon illustrations. Just in time for Christmas giving for that public radio fan--or anybody who doesn't mind laughing out loud!

Book Description
When Justine and Barry meet during a plane crash just before the Christmas holidays, the relationship that follows is wild, turbulent, and maybe, just maybe, a keeper. Justine is a pretty, smart, ambitious lawyer who's tired of being set up on lousy dates. Her eighteen-hour work days get in the way of finding Mr. Right, but she'd rather be home with her dog, drinking salad dressing for dinner and watching The Sound of Music on the VCR anyway. Barry is a good-looking food product manager living on the Upper West side with a rich roommate who is juggling three girlfriends at once but never has the rent. Barry seeks his soulmate, but the fact that he hasn't had a date in a year makes things a little tougher. A comic urban romance about the possibilities and impossibilities of love. Was it Something I Said? is a classic "will they or won't they?" for the nineties that will keep readers guessing until the very end.
Customer Reviews:
Amusing NY romance.......2007-10-14
After reading the other reviews and the "I don't get it" reviews, I felt I had to add my two cents. I found this 30-something novel at my 92 year old mother's Assisted Living home and was amused to find this type of novel in that setting! Wonder how it got there? At any rate, the characters ARE prickly, but who said everyone has to be nice all the time. A lot of us have tics and quirks, and these two were no exception. I enjoyed reading what it's like for unmarried New Yorkers in their 30's, and thought Valerie Block did a great job for a first time novel. OK, it's not going to last as a Great Novel, but it was fun and amusing, and held my interest throughout. It helps if you're Jewish, too, to understand the angst. Obviously she's improved as she's gone along, and the next two novels were better received (more stars) than the first. Keep on going, Valerie!
Corporate-level chicklit.......2007-01-28
A nice single thirty-something food company marketing executive (male) falls in love at first sight with a nice single thirty-something Manhattan lawyer (female) and they have many misunderstandings that push them apart, which is what is supposed to keep up the suspense, so I won't spoil the plot by telling you what happens in the end. It contains a lot of information about what it's like to be a food company marketing executive or a Manhattan corporate lawyer.
It is well written and enjoyable, with some amusing satire on the New York legal and business scene. There are some confusing flashbacks. The fourth star has to be denied, perhaps unfairly, because it attempts to hit targets that have been hit harder by better writers. Here are my unfair comparisons: For the basic plot of course there's Helen Fielding's "Bridget Jones's Diary"and Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice"; for lifestyles of the New York rich and infamous, Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities"; for yiddishkeit almost any Philip Roth and Dan Greenberg's "How to be a Jewish Mother." Take this to the beach after you've read all of the above.
Not Your Typical Love Story.......2006-11-11
It took me awhile to get "into" this book, but Valerie Block is a strong writer, so overall I quite enjoyed it. The book starts off rather exciting....with our two main characters meeting on an airplane. Their developing romance reminded me of the realities I endured while dating (some 15 years ago). My how time flies. She reminded me that we each have our own neurotic likes and dislikes in a mate, and we each come with our own strange habits and perceptions. The author pokes fun at each character and some Jewish stereotypes. Fun, easy read.
Annoying at best.......2006-11-07
I made it to page 82, then came here to read the reviews to see if it was going to get any better. I didn't like any of the characters.
And the choppy style
jumping back and forth
between past and present
and unlikeable people
was very annoying.
I found myself not caring about their petty dramas and superficial angst. So glad to see my gut feeling was right, it's a real stinker.
Thanks to the reviews here I won't waste anymore time on this dreary book.
Writing was fine, just didn't like the characters..........2006-04-15
I'm not saying that it was horrible - it just wasn't that great or that good. When you don't really like the two lead characters, it is hard to like the book even if the basic writing works. I knew it was going downhill when the "couple" met during a plane crash and shared their first kiss while the plane was going down. I should mention that they shared their first kiss after both or at least one of them vomitted. The rest of the story was more grounded in reality but it still didn't grab me.

The Best Veterinarian Book Since Herriot!!.......2006-05-30
This is a great book for those of us in the Animal Industry as well as those people who just love animals and the Western "way of life." As the Animal Scientist for Eastern New Mexico University I especially appreciated the trials and tribulations of large animal work. In addition, I was thoroughly impressed with Dr. Browder for recognizing and giving credit to those around him who have contributed to his success. It is truly an educational and inspirational work. In the end, I am glad Dr. Browder "Said Something." A must read!!

KUDOS to Dr. Browder for saying something good.......2006-05-19
I got home about 8:00 p.m. the evening that I received my copy of this book in the mail. I started reading it and couldn't lay it down until I had read the whole thing. Dr. Browder writes in a way that draws the reader in and makes the events of his life very real. It is heartwarming and, much like the James Herriot books, makes the reader fall in love with the animals, people and events that surround a veterinarian's life. I wish I would have met some of the characters he tells about. They are the sort of people who make others better. As Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University (Dr. Browder's alma mater) I have made sure that his book has been added to our library's collection.

Book Description
In 1986, with contractors stealing an estimated 10 percent of the total federal budget by fraud, Congress passed a newly strengthened anticorruption law. Ordinary citizens could file lawsuits on behalf of the government to recover money stolen from the public Treasury, and they would share in the result. In the years since, despite massive institutional resistance, the False Claims Act has emerged as one of the nation's most potent weapons against corporate greed. Giantkillers is the story of that law and what it has accomplished. Charged with intrigue and courtroom drama, Giantkillers describes in novelistic detail how an unlikely team - a conservative senator, a liberal congressman, and a crusading public interest attorney - revitalized a public interest law, enacted during the Civil War, that was gutted by lobbyists and almost forgotten. Giantkillers tells how the trail-blazing firm of Phillips and Cohen gave the law its teeth back and made triumphant heroes out of those previously scorned as "whistle-blowers." Providing an inside eye into the world of the whistleblowers, their adversaries, and their allies, this timely story weighs the lure of corporate greed and reckless power against the high cost of personal integrity.
Customer Reviews:
Reads like a John Gresham book except that its all true.......2007-01-05
This is a remarkable story about a group of true American heroes who fought for their country in a number of ways -- some on the battlefield and some in the courts.
The principal characters challenged huge, corrupt and powerful companies that stole from the American taxpayers in many ways selling shoddy, defective and in some cases nonexistent goods and services to the US government: Defense contractors that sell defective airplanes to the US Air Force; manufacturers who sell defective "bullet proof" vests to our police; drug companies that bill Medicare for defective or nonexistent medicine for the elderly and on and on and on. All of this happened. And it still does. Corporate "mobsters" will do anything for a buck.
The work described in the book continues that of President Abraham Lincoln when he first signed into law the Federal False Claims Act in 1863 giving Americans the right to act as private attorney generals to sue corporate mobsters stealing from all of us.
Its a great read but it will make you angry before you've finished.
Giant Killers by Henry Scammell.......2006-07-29
I hand this book out to all of the whistleblowers whom I recruit to bring qui tam actions. It depicts what can and will go wrong for a whistleblower if they let their employer know they are a whistleblower too early in the process or in the wrong way - unemployment, blacklisting, starting over at the bottom rungs of the career ladder in a different industry etc.... The main takeaways for whistlelbowers are to keep their activities secret, maintain the sanctity of the "federal seal" and only inform your employer that you are engaged in a "protected activity" on advice of competent counsel. Harry Markopolos, CFA Financial Fraud Investigator
Telling it like it is.......2004-08-08
Giantkillers does an excellent job describing the Justtice Department's ambivalence about prosecuting white collar criminals, corporate and individuals. When local Crimestoppers offer $1000 rewards to anonymous tipsters for the apprehension of a liquor store robber who nets a $100 and banks offer $25K rewards to convict a bank robber who loots 10 grand; it is deplorable when Justice Department lawyers often ignore and occasionally subvert honest citizens/taxpayers who object to their employer's larceny of literally millions and even billions of dollars. Perhaps if these civil servants couldn't plan on retiring to go work for the companies they're supposed to prosecute they might adjust their conflicted attitudes.:-)
Times have changed and so have perceptions. Time Magazine honored three Whistleblowers (all women) as their Man of the Year. A decade ago such individuals were typically disparaged as disgruntled, malcontents. Whistleblowers owe a debt of gratitude to the Fastow's of Enron, Barney Ebbers of WorldCom and hundreds more corrupt executives for exposing how rampant corporate corruption has become in America by sticking their fellow citizens where it hurts, in their personal pocketbook.
Even with the present focus on corporate thuggery, the US Attorney in Houston had to be publicly rebuffed by Judge Hittner who rejected their minimal sentence recommendation (<5months) offered by the federal prosecutors to Enron's female crook, Lea Fastow.
The bad news is that in almost all the cases in this book (apparently focused exclusively on the practice of Phillips and Cohen during the 90s) very few of the perpetrators went to jail, using their company's money and lawyers to buy their way out of jail where they belong forever. The good news is today judges like Sim Lake are giving appropriate sentences (24 years to Dynegy's crook, Jamie Olis) and Judge Hittner refusing Lea Fastow's request to delay her sentence until the week after her Jewish holiday, Passover. How does she spell chutzpah? Hittner had compassionately agreed not to incarcerate her and her husband simultaneously, for the sake of their children.
This book hero worships Phillips and Cohen who represent the mostly noble individuals cited. What is striking though was Phillips and Cohens complete adversion to prosecuting a case on their own when the Federal Government declines to intervene. Essentially Phillips and Cohen labored mightily to induce and cajole reluctant, footdragging justice department bureaucrats to step in and prosecute; absent that, Phillips and Cohen seem disinclined to fight for their clients on their own, as is their option.
In my view, this adversion reveals that Phillips and Cohen are somewhat less heroic than the author portrays them. A coward will fight with allies when he is likely to win, a real hero engages a fight, that alone he might lose.
The reader will get a multifaceted viewpoint of the struggle by individuals of integrity and courage who confront their rapacious employers and cowardly managers. A must-read for anyone who is disgusted with government ripoffs and appalled by feckless federal attorneys whose job is to vigorously prosecute the scoundrels. Joel Hesch is an exception to the rule.
An informative history of the "False Claims Act".......2004-07-17
Giantkillers: The Team And The Law That Help Whistle-Blowers Recover America's Stolen Billions by freelance writer Henry Scammell is an informed and informative history of the "False Claims Act" from its legislative origins during the American Civil War as a way to halt the sale of lame horses and worthless gunpowder to the Union Army, down to the present day hallmarked by major corporate frauds on an Enron or Worldcom scale. Illustrative cases include a landmark Medicare fraud case against HCA (which resulted in a fine of 1.7 billion dollars being paid to the federal government); a fraud case against National Health Laboratories that led to the government recovering more than $800 million from the medical lab industry; a $59.5 million settlement by GE for scamming the Pentagon and Israeli air force; the Salomon Smith Barney banking scandals that collectively paid more than $200 million for illegally skimming huge profits from municipal bond deals; and more. Giantkillers is a highly recommended revelation of corporate greed, reckless power, and personal integrity.
Read about the samuri fraud fighters.......2004-03-03
Though Henry Scammell has chosen to illuminate the federal False Claims Act through the high-profile cases of a single law firm, we now have a growing False Claims Act bar reshaping corporate culture, and an ever-increasing number of states embracing state versions of the law. The result is that in boardrooms across the country there is a new realization that fraud against the government can be effectively prosecuted, and that triple damages may be exceed out of date cost of doing business assumptions based on the wrist-slap penalties that formerly pertained. Henry Scammell's eminently readable book makes clear that nailing the con artists depends on a rare breed of individual who is willing to risk career and peace of mind to see justice done. The journey is rarely easy, and never short. Scammell recounts whistleblowers that fought for years and risked marriages and bankruptcy to see their cases through. While some focus on the economic payoff at the end, Scammell pays attention to the terror of the ride - a ride that is often shared by law firms that invest hundreds of thousands of dollars and years of time building cases in which the government often shows only a passing interest -- at least in the beginning. Part history book, part psychological narrative, and part forensic fraud report, Giant Killers weaves a compelling tale about the personalities and travails of doing the right thing - and the ultimate payoff in the end.
This book is a good read and you should read it before John Grisham does a novel on one of the stories Scammell relates.

Book Description
In recent years, the hospital industry has been undergoing massive change and reorganization with technological innovations and the spread of managed care. As a result, the total number of hospitals countrywide has been declining, and a growing number of not-for-profit hospitals have converted to for-profit status. These changes raise two fundamental questions: What determines a hospital's choice of for-profit or not-for-profit organizational form? And how does that form affect patients and society?
This timely volume provides a factual basis for discussing for-profit versus not-for-profit ownership of hospitals and gives a first look at the evidence about new and important issues in the hospital industry. The Changing Hospital Industry: Comparing Not-for-Profit and For-Profit Institutions will have significant implications for public-policy reforms in this vital industry and will be of great interest to scholars in the fields of health economics, public finance, hospital organization, and management; and to health services researchers.
