Book Description

Unlike most pathogenic organisms, viruses require a special approach to establish their presence in a diseased plant, since they are not visible, even with a light microscope. Due to the tremendous damage of crop plants caused by viruses various methods and techniques have been developed to enable the investigation of these pathogens. A variety of protocols for determining the properties and identity of a virus or its behaviour in an infected plant are described in this manual. For teaching purposes, a number of class exercises have been added. The protocols have been selected in such a way as to be useful for plant viruses in both tropical and non-tropical parts of the world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......1999-11-27

This book is extremely well done. I am a plant virologist and have used several of the protocols included in this book with a high degree of success. The book would be a boon to a researcher as well as to an instructor wishing to conduct a laboratory course in virology at the undergraduate or graduate university level.

      Book Description

This Michelin Green Guide explores northeastern France from the open horizons of Champagne to the stony cliffs of the Meuse valley and the thick forests of Ardennes and Argonne. The blue line of the Vosges mountains rises between Lorraine and Alsace, where vineyards stretch from the foothills to the Rhine valley plain. Majestic Gothic cathedrals, half-timbered villages, mountain retreats, medieval castles, museums for every interest distinguish this historic land and cultural crossroads.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful in our driving tour of Alsace.......2004-08-20

This was a great companion to our (my husband & I) tour of the Alsace reagion of France which is worth the trip! It is a beautiful not-well traveled region of France. We visited this French/German area on a trip where we visited Mont Blanc and the French Riveria as well. We were greeted with only friendliness from the wineries and other French people that we met on our visit to Alsace.

                PETRONAS TWIN TOWERS

In a world with jumbo jets, microchips and artificial hearts architecture had appeared to have losts its wonder, but with the building of the petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, now thw tallest buildings on earth, this has changed and their construction has rightfully restored architecture as a world wonder. The towers designed by Cesar Pelli embody the greatest spirit of buildings that reach to the heavens, a spirit born of the American mid-West and now found all over the world. They also reflect the latest technology in making tall buildings, with modern materials such as stainless steel cladding which makes their spires glisten on the horizon. The design of the Petronas Twin Towers began with an international design competition. In June 1991, eight firms were invited to participate. The architects were asked to provide a general plan for the Kuala Lumpur City Centre and a more detailed design for two towers to be occupied by Petronas, the national petroleum company of Malaysia. The Petronas Twin Towers were expected to define a gateway, "a place that people can identify as unique to Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia." It was never discussed that the towers should become the tallest buildings in the world, only that they be beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Read the book then review!.......2001-11-23

The twin Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia became the tallest buildings in the world when they were completed in the latter half of the nineties. This architectural marvel became the first building in about 100 years to be taller than any building in the United States. Of course there are more stories in the Sears Tower (the previous record holder) and the broadcast towers do actually make it higher than the Petronas, but architectural standards for height measure spires but not broadcast towers - go figure. The Sears Tower can also still claim the highest observation deck of a building while the CN Tower in Toronto, Ontario, Canada has the highest of any structure (the CN being considered a free standing structure and not a "building").

It is a great shame that the world trade towers no longer exist but it has been a long time since they were even the tallest buildings in even the U.S. (see other reviews). The Orient seems to be leaping ahead in building technology and this book illustrates one such example.

Now is the time to get this book as it still proclaims the Petronas as the 'tallest in the world' as plans are under way for even a higher tower in Shanghai, China and the record may again fall. In the present however, the Petronas are a great example of two countries working together with a group of Japanese construction crews working on one tower while the other was completed by Malaysians. This may be the first and only time in building history where such a unique strategy and cooperation took place.

American architects may have started the skyscraper in 'the Chicago school' but the future of tall buildings currently lies in the far east. I recommend this book to those who can swallow their 'America first' pride and see the glowing accomplishment of architecture in that region of the world.

                    A Canadian Perspective

P.S. Other reviewers should read the book or at least look at the description before pasting thoughts that are not relevant.

yiks! i never knew there were other twin towers in other places.
AND i ALWAYS thoought that OUR twin towers were the tallest buildings in the world! (just shows how much i know huh?)
well, o.k. what do you expect from a simple girl growing up in the city and who never went to college... i only know what i see, and to me the twin towers LOOKED like the tallest buildings in the world i still miss them. it still HURTS to look in that direction. tha towers that used to decorate the skyline of my city are gone, but im happy to know that somewhere in another city there are other twins. good to know. thanks.

Why did two people write reviews of this book without knowing that it has nothing to do with horrible Sept. 11? One reviewer even expresses disappointment at the idea that this book is not about the NYC Twin Towers! Hunh? Look at the title - - they're different buildings!

Whatever. They are stunning buildings, as were the NYC Twin Towers.

If you have an interest in the architecture and amazing engineering challenges that brought these amazing structures into our lives (we in the West will not be building impractical skyscrapers evermore) ... this is a great overview.

3 out of 5 stars Petronas Towers are in Malaysia.......2001-09-26

These twin towers have nothing to do with the World Trade Center twin towers so tragically destroyed on Sept. 11. This may be a good book (I haven't read it), but it's about buildings in Malaysia, not in New York City.

5 out of 5 stars in loving memory.......2001-09-21

i would buy all books having to do with the towers because i miss them. i miss seeing them on my way to work. i saw them disappear on my way to work one day and now they are no more. i miss you my towers! I LOVE NY

5 out of 5 stars Funny and well written.......2007-05-25

The Lacquered Box is the last book in a trilogy of novels that also includes "The Patterned Flute" and "The Stolen Crate". Kate Halton a folk musician and Liz Sharpe a photographer, the lesbian couple who met in "The Patterned Flute", find themselves once again unintentionally involved in the middle of a mystery: someone is stealing antiques from the houses of old people that have died.
This book is very funny and will make you laugh out loud while Kate and Liz, a very unconventional and funny couple, together with their group of friends try to solve the mystery. Helen Shacklady's writing improved steadily since her first book and the excellent character delineation and nice plot make this book probably the best in the trilogy. However the whole trilogy is certainly worth reading. Kate and Liz are characters that you will certainly not forget.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the trilogy........2004-01-17

How can the relationship between two middle-aged lesbians, neither rich nor famous, sustain a trilogy of novels? If the lesbians are Liz Sharpe and Kate Halton, it's quite easy. I could carry on idefinitely following the adventures of these two. Wonderful dialogue, good plotting, and sharply observed characters. Buy this book for yourself. Buy a copy for a friend. [Yes], send one to your mother. We can all use a laugh, and this is well-crafted escapism.

                                Book Description

Exquisitely painted, small, round, papier-mch and lacquer boxes are sought after today for their beauty and the high level of craftsmanship they demonstrate. For the many admirers of these boxes, and students of the European cultural society in which they were made (in the early part of the nineteenth century), Detley Richter has written this careful account of the artistic, manufacturing, and commercial climates which were combined in the production of lacquered boxes. His well-researched text and over 350 illustrations are arranged into chapters which explain the manufacturing and artistic processes, important makers and their signatures, various uses, leading collections, and evolving traditions of the boxes in German, French, English, Russian, and other societies. That lacquered boxes are recognized as things of beauty is apparent in the many color pictures. That they are the products of highly sophisticated social influences becomes apparent when reading the author's analysis and conclusions. This is a wonderful new contribution to information on the decorative arts.

                                  Book Description

The power of love affects the fates of human beings, transcending cultures and even times. In this novel extraordinary events from the past, mixed with dreams and present encounters, are unfolding through the poems, diaries and letters which Sophienne Dantela, a scholar in Japanese art, sends from Japan and China to her friend Mariela in Paris, in a precious lacquered box.

Sophienne's life in Kyoto is filled with passionate longing and with immensely rich experiences in Japanese aesthetic beauty, expressed in poems and artistic activities. In historically important temples she hears mysterious, puzzling stories from the past as if telling her that she had been living there before. Her longing for her love ends in a deep deception, and it changes the path of her life. Instead of returning to Paris she decides to go and see Huang-shan Mountains in China, the place referred to in the dreamy encounters in the temples. New surprises wait for her there, both tender and tragic.

The stories in the novel reveal in a poignant way how transient or unreliable things are in human life, how fragile feelings can be, on one hand, yet how tremendously strong on the other, and how cruelty can be overcome by beauty and spiritual enlightenment. In Sophienne's cosmopolitan world we find exceptional intellectual and cultural search, deep sensitivity to beauty in nature and in arts, and unbreakable faith in poetry.

                                                    Book Description

Landon Carter, a Virginia planter, left behind one of the most revealing of all American diaries. In this astonishingly rich biography, Isaac mines this remarkable document--and many other sources--to reconstruct Carter's interior world as it plunged into revolution. The aging patriarch, though a fierce supporter of American liberty, was deeply troubled by the rebellion and its threat to established order. His diary, originally a record of plantation business, began to fill with angry stories of revolt in his own little kingdom. Carter writes at white heat, his words sputtering from his pen as he documents the terrible rupture that the Revolution meant to him. Indeed, Carter felt in his heart that he was chronicling a world in decline, the passing of the order that his revered father had bequeathed to him. Not only had Landon's king betrayed his subjects, but Landon's own household betrayed him: his son showed insolent defiance, his daughter Judith eloped with a forbidden suitor, all of his slaves conspired constantly, and eight of them made an armed exodus to freedom. The seismic upheaval he helped to start had crumbled the foundations of Carter's own home. In Landon Carter's Uneasy Kingdom Rhys Isaac unfolds not only the life, but also the mental world of our countrymen in a long-distant time. Moreover, in this presentation of Landon Carter's passionate narratives, the diarist becomes an arresting new character in the world's literature, a figure of Shakespearean proportions, the Lear of his own tragic kingdom. This long-awaited work will be seen both as a major contribution to Revolution history and a triumph of the art of biography.

Mr. Isaac's book is an excellent idea and almost perfectly executed. Far from being a "psycho-babble" book, Mr. Isaac explores in a powerful fashion the life of a man in such a way that we very much get to know him. Carter is a man who we have all met, known, or even lived with at one time or another.
The only thing that I disagreed with was the ordering of the book's treatment of Landon Carter. I would have appreciated a more chronological presentation. Still, I understand why Mr. Isaac wrote it using the organization based on subject matter, but I disagree.

1 out of 5 stars Speculative psychology in the guise of history.......2005-02-07

The author draws profound implications from diary passages which seldom appear to support those implications. The attempted parallel between Carter's plantation life and the revolution is labored, particularly the "father" analogy. Although one takes the point early in the book that King George and Landon Carter are both "fathers," this point is incessantly repeated, to the point of irritation. There is little hard evidence given for the proposition that King George, who was about 24 years old, was viewed by many 50- and 60-year-old colonists as a "father," or that the Revolution was symbolic parricide. The author spins simple diary statements into Carter's views of the cosmos, and this is seldom supported. The author also refers to Carter throughout as "Landon," as though they were personally close. The events chronicled by the diary are, in themselves, quite interesting. It is the psychological speculation that makes the book hard to get through.

4 out of 5 stars An Intimate Glimpse of Colonial Virginia.......2004-12-31

By editing and contextualizing the voluminous diary of Landon Carter, Rhys Isaac has made a significant contribution to the social history of early Virginia and colonial America. By placing excerpts from Carter's diary within a larger framework of colonial society, readers can gain a more thorough understanding of the changing mores of mid 17th century Virginia. Carter emerges as a flesh and blood person throughout the book, though rarely sympathetic when seen through the eyes of 21st century readers. Of particular impact were Carter's regularly inhumane interactions with slaves and increasing inability to reconcile relationships with his own children. At times the book is abstract and academic in style, yet the end results are more than justified for anyone with an interest in knowing more about our "peculiar institution" and the origins of American society and culture.

5 out of 5 stars More than the title suggests.......2004-12-16

This book isn't as popular as it should be because the title makes it seem something of a dry academic tome and, let's face it, Landon Carter doesn't have the popular name recognition of Alexander Hamilton (i.e. Chernow), George Washington (i.e. Ellis) or Benjamin Franklin (i.e. Wood).

The star of the show in this case is Carter himself rather than the author. Dr. Isaac does a wonderful job of framing and interpreting Carter's diary to make a coherent analysis of the profound social changes which occurred during the Revolutionary period. Carter was a first hand witness to the transformation of the American society from a rigid colonial society based on patronage to a participatory, republican society in which people made lives for themselves. The transformation is nothing less than a journey of existential self-discovery for Carter, which is something ANY person can appreciate. So this book is not just a biography of a member of the Virginia planter aristocracy, but a reflection of the undermining of the feudal, patriarchal social structure Americans largely rejected during the Revolution. And it illustrates that the highly dualistic interpretation of Americans of the period as either "patriot" or "loyalist" is largely a modern historical construct with little basis in truth. Marvelous work by one of the foremost historians of American colonial history.

                                                          Book Description

William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806) was the youngest ever Prime Minister, and the second longest-serving one. Dominant in British politics for over twenty years, at a critical time in the his-tory of Britain, Europe and the world, he presided over the reforms that set up modern government in Britain (including the introduction of income tax). He also orchestrated Britain's response in the early stages of the war against the French Revolution and Napoleon, living to see British command of the sea established for over a hundred years at the battle of Trafalgar.Pitt the Younger is the story of an extraordinary career. The son of Britain's war leader in the Seven Years War, William Pitt the Younger was a born politician who dedicated his life to the exercise of power. His superb oratory, personal probity, and deep understanding of politics enabled him to overcome a lack of bonhomie and a chaotic private life. Michael Turner shows what Pitt achieved and how he achieved it, providing a clear and readable assessment of Pitt's career.

A book only for the most committed scholar of William Pitt's political life. Written in an arid style, Professor Turner's book neglects the broader context. The general reader is offered no feel of the interesting times in European history within which Pitt the Younger operated.
