Customer Reviews:
A must-have if you're heading to Cape Town.......2006-03-06
I got this guide as a gift. My friends have the Lonely Planet one and I have seen other brands for Cape Town. The Insight guide is 10 million times better than most of the competition. More detailed and useful photographs, all in color, at least one on each page. Short text but crammed with information for those who would rather spend time on adventures than reading a guide book. It was very entertaining to read as well. If you're going to Cape Town, get this book and you will know what I mean. Their warning about Long Street is hilarious. Their description of the people who hang out at the Clifton Beaches is unbelievable coming from a guide book. There are little interesting stories/facts throughout the book such as the one about the first female doctor to perform a C-section. She was pretending to be a man in order to be a doctor and the truth was only discovered when she died. Again, this book is such a great deal for the price and beats almost all other guidebooks out there at under $10.

Insightful Reading.......2003-10-06
Perceptively opens the mind to understanding the interaction and reaction generated between you and your dog in and during the training process. Koshar aptly and with some humor prepares you for the inherent vagaries that exist within you, your dog and the profession. There is also a close parallel message of humanism and the potential for personal growth. A must read for anyone who loves dogs.
Should be required reading.......2003-03-03
For anyone who is interested in dog events, Claire Koshar's A Guide To Dog Sports: From Beginners to Winners provides the common sense insider information that can make or break participation in an organized dog activity.
A Guide to Dog Sports is not a training manual. It is a delightfully well-written and humorous collection of suggestions that range from tips for beginning training to choosing a traveling partner you won't want to dump along the roadside. Koshar provides the reader with information that isn't written down anywhere else. How to fill out a premium list and knowing what to pack in the SUV that is headed for a dog event may seem simple, but getting it wrong could result in a bad experience and a dog owner who swears off organized dog events.
Koshar is an experienced trainer and competitor in many areas, As a well-respected obedience instructor, she is more than familiar with the kinds of questions most frequently asked by both dog owners and newcomers to dog sports. Knowing about armbands, how to dress and manners at an event can prevent embarrassment for the novice competitor. Koshar's many years of first hand experience are evident as she describes how to raise, condition and care for performance dogs.
A Guide to Dog Sports is a lot of information in a small package. Readers can learn about Junior Showmanship, Canine Good Citizen training, obedience, tracking, flyball, agility, and field work as they learn practical skills such as how to avoid looking like rookie of the year.
Important life lessons are presented throughout the book. How to win and lose graciously are lessons that we all can use a refresher on from time to time. Chapter 10 addresses the psychology of the owner by helping owners recognize when they are blaming their dogs or making excuses for training problems.
The emphasis of A Guide to Dog Sports is the behavior of the person at the other end of the dog's leash. This is one book that should be required reading for every beginning dog training student.
It might move you to tears.......2002-05-16
Tough old Army Colonels shouldn't cry, but I did when I read the story of "Hulk" (Pgs 81-82). For the love of the dog and for the dog's love is what this book is all about. Clearly, this life long affection for dogs permeates Claire's delightful, witty book about her dog sports adventures and those of her Dogbuddies. Practical lessons learned from years of experience are woven into an instructive book that is fun to read and puts it all in perspective. I don't know of another book like it. I highly recommend it for beginner and "pro" alike.
Carl Nock, Past President Central Florida Hunting Retriever Club, UKC and AKC Hunt Test Judge
Wonderful stories.......2002-05-16
I have been a columnist for "Front and Finish: The Dog Trainer's News" for many years, and I occasionally review books related to tracking, a major area of interest in the dog sports. While this book is not focused on the tracking community, all of the advice and wonderful stories certainly apply. I especially hope my readers will pay particular attention to Chapter 6 Getting Your Act Together, Chapter 7 Taking It on the Road, and Chapter 10 Looking Calm or Something Close to It.
People who know Claire Koshar will hear her voice telling these stories as they read. Those who haven't met her will wish they could know her. She is a first class Dogbuddy.
A must-have.......2002-05-16
DOG SPORTS, FROM BEGINNERS TO WINNERS, is a one of a kind, must have book. In it, the author offers countless tips and techniques that can be used to overcome "comepetition nerves." Funny, entertaining, educational and unique, this book is sure to be a WINNER!

Highly practical "how to" book for Northeast.......2005-06-23
Despite its age, if you live in Zones 5 - 7 in the Northeast, this may still be the most useful "what to do when" book you can find. The book is arranged by month, with what should be done to various plant species arranged alphabetically (by common name), along with a few broader pointers, also by month. It can be a bit frustrating to have to look in 2 or 3 places to read all that is written about, say, Phlox, but now that it is, say, June, it is very useful to be able to scan one short chapter to see what can be done now, and what you might have overlooked. Has color photos of given plants on almost every page, but with an emphasis on practical, cultural information, and not much on putting together plant combinations, or on good garden design. (Jim Crockett was the first host of the PBS show "Crockett's Victory Garden" - this, his last book, was finished by Marjorie Waters and John Pelrine, who received credit only inside the book.)

Wonderful reference guide to flower gardening.......2000-06-10
Crockett's Flower Garden is a fantastic reference book for anyone who enjoys gardening, novice or experienced. The book is written in month-by-month format, which makes it easy to follow and easy to chart your gardening tasks.
Crockett's love for gardening shows through, as does his practical approach. He discusses both, buying plants and starting from seed (when practical).
I highly recommend the book.

Book Description
Add that extra bit of magic to your Christmas with one of fifty fun and inspirational projects. With traditional favorites, variations on classic themes, and original ideas, there is something to suite all tastes. Choose from a citrus Christmas tree for the table, a savory plum pudding, and handmade wrapping paper and cards. Color photos accompany the clear step-by-step instructions. Includes 16 pages of templates, patterns, and stencils.

Ornaments, edibles, and gifts fill the pages of Family Circle Big Book of Christmas, some in fairly traditional style with Victorian flavor, others with a bit more of a country orientation. Projects include a mantel full of elegant stockings, a wreath heavily encrusted with buttons, folk-art treasure boxes adorned with felt hearts, and a pair of host and hostess vests boasting sporty red and gold stripes.
Directions are somewhat brief but generally adequate; the materials sections, however, are hard to decipher at a glance because all the items are run together in a paragraph instead of separated into a list. Although not terribly inspired, the photos are reasonably clear, and most projects are relatively easy. The bulk of the book is devoted to recipes, such as a full brunch, a complete Christmas dinner, a round-robin dinner party, and lots and lots of desserts. --Amy Handy
Book Description
The search for the `the real Saint Patrick' has puzzled and intrigued scholars for centuries. How much can we really know about the life and times of Patrick? Why and how was the Patrick myth built up in the seventh century, and what was its influence on the development of Irish Catholicism? This new study takes a new approach to these questions. It begins by looking at what we expect from history; and the very different expectations of those who made Patrick famous, gave value to his writings so that they were preserved, and produced the interest that is still with us. Only when we can distinguish between the problems and perspectives of the hagiographer, on the one hand, and the historian, on the other, can we begin to approach Patrick.
This is superb popular history, rooted in a lifetime of research and study of the original sources, that undermines many of our preconceptions about Patrick and reveals several surprises. It includes new translations of the life of Patrick and Patrick's own writings, as well as an extensive bibliography and resources for further reading.
Part One is a narrative outlining the problems of coming to know Patrick and to outline the earliest evidence for Christianity in Ireland. Part Two is made up of fresh translations of the basic sources for Patrick and his cult.

Great introduction to the real St Patrick.......2005-11-14
The perfect place to start if you want to learn about St. Patrick or early Irish Christianity. O'Loughlin is the best scholar in the world on this subject, but his books are easy to read.
A "must-read" for anyone who is curious to understand what St. Patrick's Day is really all about.......2005-08-14
Written by a theology lecturer at the University of Wales, Lampeter, Discovering Saint Patrick is a religious and biographical study of Saint Patrick, that strives to understand as much as possible about his life, his impact on history, how he influenced the development of Irish Catholicism, and much more. Thoroughly researched, drawing heavily on original sources as well as directly from scripture, Discovering Saint Patrick approaches the life and times of the famous saint with a scholarly eye for detail and as much corroboration and verification as reasonably possible. A welcome contribution to church libraries and biographical collections of holy figures, and a "must-read" for anyone who is curious to understand what St. Patrick's Day is really all about.

Customer Reviews:
A Charming Tale!.......2006-08-01
This is a very lovely presentation of the life of St. Patrick. I used it for a vacation bible school group of 2nd and 3rd graders. They easily understood the story and really loved the pictures.
A wonderful introduction to the real St. Patrick for children!.......2005-10-31
I have always enjoyed the picture books of Tomie dePaola. His unique illustration style is immediately recognizable and is reminiscent of religious icons found in Catholic and Orthodox churches.
Not surprisingly, dePaola often tackles Christian themes, making them accessible for younger readers and their parents. Among my all-time favorite children's book is his "The Clown of God," which I have enjoyed reading to children prior to Christmas.
"Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland" is another such book. The simple narrative mainly addresses Patrick's early years as a British boy, captured by the Irish to become a slave shepherd in Ireland. After many years alone in prayer, he escapes, but eventually is called in a dream to return to Ireland to spread the love of God. After religious studies, becoming a missionary and then a bishop, he finally returns to Ireland, setting up churches, but not without opposition from some of the local rulers.
What I appreciate about this version of St. Patrick's story is the dependency on historical fact in the main narrative. The book concludes with six one-page summaries of the better-known legends of Ireland's patron saint, such as driving out the snakes, and his use of the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Refreshingly, these legends are briefly, but affectionately, told without judgment. It is left to the reader (or the parent) to decide what to make of them.
The author concludes with a one-page epilogue, lovingly explaining how he was introduced as a young child to St. Patrick by his Irish Catholic grandparents.
for catholics only.......2005-01-30
This book is fine if you are Catholic, but I was hoping for something more accessible for non-Catholics. For example, the legend of the shamrock is not very meaningful if you are not already acquainted with the trinity or Jesus or the Holy Spirit, etc. This would definitely not be a book to use to teach anything about the Catholic faith to non-Catholic, non-Christian children, which is what I was hoping to use it for.
I like how dePaola has a section at the end for the legends of St. Patrick, separating these from the biography. I was raised an Irish Catholic and I was hoping to be able to share some of that heritage with my own children through this book, but in the end, all of the miracles and mumbo jumbo are too hard to swallow. My daughter was confused about which parts of the story were "real" and which were "for pretend." I think it was a little too much for her to choke down. I had to try to explain to her what baptism is, but she just stared at me blankly.
The illustrations are quite lovely, and I would recommend this book highly for all Catholic school libraries.
Informative & Fun!.......2003-01-13
Growing up in an Irish Catholic family myself, I had heard a great deal about St. Patrick. When we received this book as a gift I started reading it to my children, and they loved it. There were stories even I hadn't heard about St. Pat! As with his St. Francis book, Tomie DePaola's book holds children's interest throughout the many stories while other books of this length lose children. Kids remember the stories and repeat them because they are told so lovingly and in such a fun way! I now bring this book to their school and read it to all their classrooms every St. Patrick's Day to let children know that there is more to Patrick than green beer!
Learn more about the Patron Saint of Ireland.......2002-10-30
A wonderful book by Tomie dePaola filled with helpful information about the true story of St. Patrick's life, as well as fun legends attributed to the patron Saint of Ireland. dePaola's bold illustrations lend to the attraction of the book. He mentions at the end of the book his reasons for writing it and his attraction to Saint Patrick. My own eight year old son has a strong devotion to Saint Patrick and this book is among his favorites. I appreciate the clear differentiation between fact and legend in this book and would highly recommend it for any family.

irish hi story.......2007-08-13
comprehensive bio,no punchs pulled, the man who was Ireland to rhe rest of the world for most of the 20th century,
Thorny!.......2004-05-12
Author Coogan's works on Irish history tend to be long, very well researched, deeply documented and rich in detail. They are written for the serious, not the casual reader. This biography of Eamon de Valera is no exception. Moreover, de Valera s life was complicated and controversial. He is scarcely a hero to many Irish Americans familiar with their native country's past. Most of all, he suffers-pitifully it says here- from comparisons to the true hero of Ireland?s struggle for independence-Michael Collins. Bad feeling between them was directly responsible for Ireland?s tragic Civil War in the mid 1920s. This reviewer freely admits to his definite prejudices against de Valera and one suspects that author Coogan agrees. The advice from here is to read Coogan s Michael Collins: The Man Who Made Ireland first. Those with ravenously whetted appetites may proceed-with caution- to this weighty and gloomy text. This reviewer's father once told him that one cannot understand modern Ireland without understanding de Valera. That much may be true-but why torture oneself? Why devote hours reading about a gloomy, narrow minded and devious Spanish Irishman such as this? And a math teacher no less! The bottom line is that both Collins and de Valera inspire strong feelings. Some actual knowledge of Irish history deepens this effect. The result is an abiding difficulty in writing a neutral review on one of those men just after you have just posted one on the other. This reviewer urges his amazon friends to read all the posted opinions on this weighty effort from the gifted, if long winded Tim Pat Coogan. Too much hand wriniging? Welcome to Irish history 101.
Long but thorough history of Irish leader.......2002-11-19
Tim Pat Coogan compiles a sober and thorough history of Eamon deValera, the most influential Irish leader of the twentieth century. Combining painstaking research with first-hand accounts, Coogan presents a well-rounded portrait of this most complicated and controversial figure. Those who hold deValera in a saintly reverence may be angered at some of the less flattering depictions of the "lay cardinal." But this ranks as a most important read for anyone interested in tracking the course of twentieth century Ireland.
IRISH HISTORY AT ITS BEST.......2002-02-02
Must read for anyone who wants to know history and politics from 1916to 1950 in Ireland,USA AND England.
Eamon Devalera The Man Who Was Ireland.......2000-04-01
In many ways a superior work, but only if you are aware of Coogan's bias, which is blindly pro Collins and unfairly anti Devalera. An anology would be a Nixon apologist [i.e. Pat Buchanan or William Safire] writing an "Objective Biography" of John F. Kennedy. Despite their obvious intellectual talents, neither is capable of an even handed analysis. Devalera was a Giant of the 20 th Century, despite the fact that he represented only a very small nation on the World Scene for nearly 40 yrs. He was the central figure in the the War of Independence with G.B., + in the formation + leadership of Eire in the League of Nations, W.W.11, + post W.W. 11 /U.N., + as a respected + influential nuetral leader.Coogan for all is literary skills, is simply incapable of objective analysis except on rare instance. The detail is impressive, the sources are broad, and the scope is massive ,but he simply finds it virtually impossible to see what history has proven; that Dev was the superior soul in intellect, vision, ethics, and historical perspective. Collins was a good man , but seriously flawed with human weaknesses; while Dev...not a saint, who really is?....was a monumental tower of basic decency, judgement, + historical insight + instinct. Harry Boland,a great Irish patriot, who was extremely close to both Collins + Devalera, choose Dev, + the Collins' forces made him pay with his life. He declared that Dev was "the true Chief" and that the greatness of the man lay in his " incorruptability".If the reader knows Irish history, and if he/she can seperate the bias from the facts, they will gain meaningful insights into Dev and the glory that was his Ireland.
