Best Travel Book I've Ever Seen.......2000-03-28
A friend from Massachusetts was coming to visit us in Virginia and borrowed this book from her local library. It is wonderful. It is clearly written and full of accurate information. We used it a lot both to decide where to go and for reference as questions came up as we travelled. As soon as she left I went immediately to Amazon.com to get a copy of my own. The photographs are beautiful but the information is the best ever. There is a lot to cover in Virginia and this book does it well.

At minimum, a very interesting read........2005-12-26
I found the text to be quite readable and a lot more interesting than some other books on raptors that I have read. This book, of course, cites many different sources, and with those cites, they are clearly stated that these are the opinions and facts of the authors he is citing from. A good portion of the books I have read regarding raptors, the authors use pictures of wild birds where this book mostly uses pictures of captive birds; I was some what puzzled by this, but all the pictures are clearly marked.
There are many tables and graphs in the book and where some are incomplete there is at least one where I questioned just how accurate the data actually was; I had to keep reminding myself that when I read this book, the opinions of the experts vary; I got the impression that the author was trying to give the reader the impression.
Hawks, Eagles and Falcons of North America: Biology and Natu.......2003-04-24
I was a little disappointed when I received the book. I found several inaccuracies in the text and many of the photos appear to be of captive or mounted birds.
A good reference.......1998-11-12
It was an interesting read about the different types of raptors seen in North America.

Book Description
Borderline Personality Disorder. "What the hell was that?" raged Rachel Reiland when she read the diagnosis written in her medical chart. As the 29-year old accountant, wife, and mother of young children would soon discover, it was the diagnosis that finally explained her explosive anger, manipulative behaviors, and self-destructive episodes- including bouts of anorexia, substance abuse, and sexual promiscuity. With astonishing honesty, Reiland's memoir reveals what mental illness feels like and looks like from the inside, and how healing from such a devastating disease is possible through intensive therapy and the support of loved ones.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible!.......2007-10-18
I have never written a review on here before, but having just finished this god-awful book, I am moved to. This may be the WORST book I have ever read...the writing is flat, boring, redundant and Reiland explains every little thing to the reader to make sure they "get it" (even simple things like the meaning of every possible bit of symbolism in a dumb bear she gave her therapist). By the end of the book, I honestly wanted her husband to leave her (with her poor kids)and for her therapist to call the cops. Mental illness is one thing but for Reiland, it seemed like she just didn't want to take responsibility for her actions and her husband and therapist enabled her to be a giant turd.
Bravo Rachel!.......2007-10-04
Rachel is courageously and intelligently honest as she describes the inner experience and outer impact of her battle with borderline personality disorder. As I was raised by a parent suffering from this disease, I felt my core pain touched and healed by Rachel's raw descriptions and her relentless pursuit of a healthy life and love. Bravo, Rachel!
Outstanding insight on BPD!.......2007-07-04
I thoughly enjoyed the first-person account of recovering from Borderline Personality Disorder. Rachel Reiland is a truly talented author who happened to suffer from this form of mental illness. If you have been recently diagnoised or have a loved-one who has been diagnoised with BPD, and you want to know what it is truly like to suffer with BPD... You NEED this book! I can not say enough about how much it helped me to understand this disorder. Furthermore... it's a page turner...I could hardly put it down!
Ruthlessly Honest Autobiography.......2007-06-18
For those seeking to understand the intense, chaotic, and conflicting love/hate behavior of a woman afflicted with borderline personality disorder, "Rachel's" ruthlessly revealing story is eye-opening. Admitted into a psychiatric hospital after striking her son, Rachel does not appear to be a lost cause; she is, no doubt, violent, unpredictable, and disordered, but she grasps her situation and wants to recover. A caring, insightful and loving psychiatrist chooses her and so begins her painful, frustrating journey of self-discovery and healing. But therapy is no magic elixer. Instead it tears away her facade, leaving her exposed as a frightened and traumatized child. Her behavior worsens as the psychiatrist loosens her tight reins on her emotions and cracks her protective walls. Her emotions swing wildly between her unbelievable love and her unmitigated rage toward the psychiatrist doing his best to pull her from the abyss. I don't know who was more courageous or inspiring, the psychiatrist who withstood her rages and navigated her toward mental health or Rachel, who suffered from such terrible inner turmoil, worked so hard to recover, and emerged a strong and loving woman. One of the best books I've ever read.
Best Book Ever on BPD!.......2007-05-09
I've been diagnosed with BPD for about 10 years now, and this is always the first book I recommend to people newly diagnosed and struggling to understand their disorder. I think it's the best book ever written on BPD--and better yet, it's written "from the inside", by a woman who struggled for years with severe BPD and overcame it. This is a WONDERFUL book--honest to the point of being painful, insightful, and above all, inspirational--it gives hope to all who suffer from this illness. If you suffer from BPD yourself and want to understand it better (and to know you're NOT alone)--buy this book! And if you live with someone diagnosed with BPD, please read this wonderful book--it will give you insight into this disorder you will find nowhere else!!
Thank you for writing this fantastic book, Rachel, and God bless you--you have offered hope to many, many people.

If You Survive: From Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge to the End of World War II, One American Officer's Riveting True Story
ASIN: 0304366404 |
Book Description
A World War II tank commander gives a direct, harrowing, and exciting account of fighting at the invasion front. On June 4, 1944, 20-year old Stuart Hills, fresh from Officer Cadet Training, went to war. Two days later, his tank sunk. Then came the struggles through Normandy in a replacement tank and a constant round of close encounters with the enemy—which swiftly turned Hills into a master of tank warfare. A remarkable story of survival.

Remarkable Memoir.......2007-01-31
This book was passed on to me by a friend -- a Scot. I doubt that as an American I would have come across it myself. Which is a pity for American readers, especially any with an interest in the European campaign from D-Day til Gemany's surrender. This was a book which grew on me as I continued to read it. I agree wth my fellow reviewer's comments about the lack of operating detail involved in Mr. Hill's memoir; but as I read I came to understand that Mr. Hills is describing not the detail of his or his fellow soldiers' day to day existence but how profoundly the war affected and changed what had been normal lives. And it shows how men like Mr. Hills made remarkable sacrifices that probably they could not have imagined themselves doing. In this sense the book is more like some great WW1 memoirs, like "Goodbye To All That".
Mr. Hills writes as well with admirable restraint and humility (he barely mentions his MC) and yes he is English so modesty is a virtue. But in my view this adds to the remarkableness of this book. On reflection you wonder how these men did it. One reason there are so few tanker memoirs is that not many front-line tankers survived. The tankers, like Mr Hills, knew this yet they got back into their tanks day after day.
At book's end Mr. Hills writes "When I am asked these days, especially by the younger generation, what it was like to fight a war, I get some odd looks when I deliberately understate that it was pretty stressful... I know that war is a distressing, ghastly harrowing, fearsome and deplorable business. How can its awfulness be described to anyone? I have done my best." He has, for our benefit. Put this on your list of WW2 memoirs that must be read.
A good tanker's tale.......2004-02-20
First off I should say this book probably deserves five stars just for its very existence. Tankers from WW2 do not seem to have written very much and any works are sorely needed. Perhaps the casualty rate for tankers was too high. Anyway, Mr Hills delivers a solid account of his time as a tank and scout platoon leader (Sherman and Stuart tanks) with the British Sherwood Rangers. Mr Hills saw considerable action from D-Day itself through to the end of war in Germany. Overall he does a fine job of describing his experiences.
What keeps the book form earning five stars is that, first of all, he skimps on the details of most of his actions as well as his equipment and day-to-day duties. Mr Hills had a real opportunity to inform the reader of what it was really like to be a tanker. Unfortunately he just does not go into enough detail. He doesn't even tell you what versions of the Sherman he was on (and every German gun is an 88mm). A couple of his battle accounts approach a fair level of detail but always end-up just shy of really letting you know what happened and he rarely makes you feel like you are reliving the action with him.
My second complaint is that Mr Hills is British and unfortunately, for readers not from the UK, writes like one. What I mean is that he uses lots of references to all things British that are simply lost on the non-British reader. Starting with his childhood school experiences right through to various pop-culture references he simply assumes the reader understands all things British. This is not a huge distraction from the book but does add to the somewhat distant feel too it (along with the semi-formal, British stiff-upper-lip thing). This tendency combined with the lack of overall detail makes for a less than stellar read and is certainly history's loss.
Overall Mr Hill does do a good job and the book is interesting and informative. The problem is simply that there are so few tankers' tales that it is a shame he did not take the book the extra mile.
