Book Description
Secondary pollen presentation is presentation of pollen to vectors by structures other than anthers, either passively or via a specialized protection and delivery system. The main part of the book describes secondary pollen presentation genus-by-genus in 25 families. The subject has never been extensively reviewed, although secondary pollen presentation occurs in the largest family of flowering plants, the Asteraceae (Compositae), and a large family of great economic importance, the Leguminosae. Now material from the scattered literature is brought together and supplemented with original observations. Many species are illustrated and each family is individually discussed. The last two chapters provide an overview of the whole topic. All the main functions that secondary pollen presentation may perform can be carried out in other plants without it. It is concluded from this that the evolution of secondary pollen presentation has been subject to constraint and canalization. The floral biology of most plants with secondary pollen presentation has not been adequately studied. Appendix 1 points to a wide range of topics on which research at various technical and academic levels is needed. The book should also become a reference work for morphologists, systematists, and floral ecologists.

Diver Dan.......2004-07-13
This book is a color, well-written, no-nonsense look at the many Bali sites by two Bali veterans. Rock is a veteran Indo-Pacific photojournalist who published Bali's first guidebook back in the late 1980s. Hinderks is a professional instructor and divemaster who has worked in Bali and Indonesia for years. A good combination that allows thoughtful insights to each site and the choice of many locales to dive. Bali is covered well from east (places like Sanur, Candi Dasa, Padang Bai, Tulamben) to west (Pemuteran, Menkangen, etc.). Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan, Nusa Penida and the wonderfully laid back Gilis in Lombok are also included.
The superb photography shows the great variety and color of the Bali marine life. This island may be one of the most overlooked dive destinations in the world as it has so many other things to offer. But muck divers love this place for its macro life and rare sea creatures ranging from the big like the odd mola-mola sinfish to the small in wierd fish like the Pegasus sea moth or a pygmy seahorse.
And there's even an ode to the tank carrying ladies of Tulamben.
This is a must have book for anyone venturing into Bali's waters on snorkel or on scuba.

Dr. Edward Scanlon practiced small-animal medicine along Philadelphia's exclusive Main Line for decades, often treating the pets of some of the area's most prominent families. But no matter what their backgrounds were, the animals--and their owners-- always made sure their doctor never had a dull moment! From Birthday Lady, the sweet kitten who was joyfully reunited with her young owner after a serious accident, to the canine companions of philanthropist and ambassador Walter Annenberg, Dr. Scanlon's patients always surprised him, made him laugh and cry, and showed him the value of the career he had chosen.

Book Description
Gardens are sites that can be at one and the same time admired works of art and valuable pieces of real estate. As the first account in English to be wholly based on contemporary Chinese sources, this innovative, beautifully illustrated book grounds the practices of garden-making in Ming dynasty China (1368–1644) firmly in the social and cultural history of the day.
Who owned Ming gardens? Who visited them? How were they represented in words, in paintings, and in visual culture generally, and what meanings did these representations hold at different levels of Chinese society? How did the discourse of gardens intersect with other discourses such as those of aesthetics, agronomy, geomancy, and botany? By examining the gardens of the city of Suzhou from a number of different angles, Craig Clunas provides a rich picture of a complex cultural phenomenon—one that was of crucial importance to the self-fashioning of the Ming elite.
Drawing on a wide range of recent work in cultural theory, the author provides for the first time a historical and materialist account of Chinese garden culture, and replaces broad generalizations and orientalist fantasy with a convincing picture of the garden’s role in social life. Fruitful Sites will appeal to all students of China’s cultural history, to students of garden history from any part of the world, to art historians, and to readers engaged in Asian and cultural studies.

Customer Reviews:
Eye-opening scholarship.......2007-01-13
I've been designing gardens in Portland Oregon for the past twenty years and have spent over a year in China studying gardens there. Chinese gardens are extremely complex and full of symbolism in almost every element . This book documents a shift in the purpose and meaning of gardens in Suzhou during the Ming . Without it you really cannot understand the economic basis for the creation of these gardens and the shift from rustic food producing sites to completely aesthetic gardens displaying wealth and taste. This is a work of scholarship , and casual garden readers will probably not like the style , especially since it pricks the bubble of the timeless Oriental Garden pretty much once and for all. If you really want to understand Chinese gardens read it . But prepare to learn. As James C.Rose once said in a similar situation ... if you really want a Japanese garden you'd have to be Japanese , but you wouldn't like that ...in his book Gardens Make Me Laugh.
The Social Evolution of the Garden in China.......2005-12-07
This book is a useful tool to track the evolution of gardens in China. It goes through the various stages of the Ming dynasty and illustrates how garden evolved from being a necessity of life, to being purely aesthetic. While this opens the door to a rarely covered aspect of Chinese history it a lacks certain scientific level, which leaves out several question that should have been answered. Such as...
1. What is the correct pronunciation og "herbs"? Is there really an "h" at the beginning or no?
2. It does not cover the history of non-biological herbs such as dill and rosemary.
3.Can rocks be considered plants? If so, what is the nutritional value of rocks?
4. Once the gardens evolved to an asethic level (such as in Rock gardens) did Chinese gardeners actually plant the rocks and expect them to grow?
5. What was the role of the invisible species of plantes, which have not been discovered yet?
Despite these faults the book remain a great work on the subject, the likes of which have never been seen before.

Dijon du Jour.......2006-06-30
With her usual wit and style, MFK Fisher brings the food and atmosphere of Dijon alive. It is a fun book, perfect as an introduction to a way of life that is both foreign and dated. The delights of the table set by an eccentric landlady and shared with a variety of characters from the building, are extravegant. Fisher also draws a picture of the town's restaurants, markets, and life.
A good read.
Enjoyable, tantalizing.......2006-01-04
This is an enjoyable, tantalizing book, with some dull spots in the earlier chapters. It is an account of Fisher's 3 years in Dijon, where she moved in 1929 so that her new husband could pursue a doctorate. She was 20 years old, bright, pretty, charming, in love, and most of all, enthusiastic. The reader gets caught up in all this, so as to overlook the book's serious drawback. Fisher can write very nicely, but you learn much more about her landladies than her husband. Fisher says of her sister Norah, "she TOO speaks always with reserve" (caps mine). The book is written as if you are already acquainted with Fisher, as no doubt many readers are, but for the rest I would recommend, before starting the book, that they look up M.F.K. Fisher in Google and thereby get to the site about Fisher sponsored by Les Dames d'Escoffier International.
Excellent Memoir and Writing, but not her best.......2005-01-25
`Long Ago in France' by premier American food writer M.F.K. Fisher was one of her last autobiographical memoirs of life in France. She may not have invented the `American in Europe' memoir exemplified by Peter Mayle's `My Year in Provence' and Frances Mayes `Under the Tuscan Sun', but she certainly helped define the genre with this work as well as `Map of Another Town', `A Considerable Town', and parts of many of her other autobiographical works such as `The Gastronomical Me'.
The events in this book, covering much of the first three years of Ms. Fisher's life with her first husband, Al Fisher, spent in a private boarding house in Dijon while hubby Fisher was completing his doctoral dissertation at the University in Dijon. The period of this book occupies a scant seven pages in `Poet of the Appetites', the biography of Ms. Fisher by Joan Reardon, yet the original book reveals practically nothing about the life of husband and wife Fisher. It certainly does not give any clue to why they ended up in Dijon, since their original intention was to study at the more prestigious university in Strasbourg.
This is the first complete work of M.F.K. Fisher's I have read and I feel just a little disappointment. The word pictures of living and eating in Dijon are certainly illuminating, but there is practically none of the humor you find in the books from Mayles and Mayes. There is also less of the scintillating writing I have sampled in some of her more famous pieces. By the author's own admission, much of this material is also a reworking of material from earlier published works as much as it is new stuff mined from her journals of this period.
The most obvious omission is a sense of the troubling times in which these events take place. The three years covered in the narrative are from 1929 through 1931, yet there is virtually no mention of the great depression as it affects Dijon, let alone how it affects the writer and her husband. Oddly, the same is true of Fisher's life as described by her biographer. Fisher's father was the editor, publisher, and owner of a small newspaper in California who did much to subsidize the student life of the young Fishers and of Mary Frances through several difficult years between marriages. Yet, there is practically no mention of this in the writings by and about Fisher.
This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Ms. Fisher's life and the influences on her writing, as she is easily, in the twentieth century American culinary world, the Wittgenstein to Julia Child's Einstein. That is the much lesser known theorist of culinary desire matched with the incomparable practitioner of culinary technique, both of whom got their inspiration from the food and cooking of France.
Yet, compared to similar works by probably less talented writers, this book is just a bit flat and dusty, befitting its recollections of events over sixty years before in the author's life. The stories of life are illuminating. The stories of people are a little empty, as all characters other than Mary Frances herself are long gone from the stage.
One of the best from America's 1st literary foodie.......2003-07-24
MFK Fisher holds a special place in the hearts of all `foodie' Americans. She was perhaps the 1st person to see the sense of writing food-based literary books and articles, and of course it's now a genre unto itself. But few have rivaled her beautiful prose, and I recall reading that she once said she considered it a day well-lived if she'd managed to compose one perfect sentence. To consider her just a food writer is to do her an injustice; she is a writer, first and foremost, who happens, sometimes, to write about food.
Long Ago in France is a memoir of her years in Dijon in the 30s, a book full of rich wine, rich ideas, character portraits filled with rich detail. It's about Life, a life filled with joy, experience, food, travel, and memorable people. This book is a paean to a lost era.
Highest recommendation.
A Reader's Feast.......2002-11-16
Between 1929 and 1932, young M.F.K. Fisher (later a famed chef and memoirist) and her husband Al Fisher lived and studied in Dijon, France. Here she discovered the people and the food of Burgundy, and she describes both with warmth, sensuality, and humor (without becoming overly sentimental: "It was there, I now understand, that I started to grow up, to study, to make love, to eat and drink, to be me and not what I was expected to be."
Her writing is crisp and evocative. "He took the apple slices from the bowl one by one, almost faster than we could see, and shook off the wine and laid them in a great, beautiful whorl, from the outside to the center, as perfect as a snail shell. We said not a word. The music trembled in the room." Fisher helps the reader discover the beauty of our appetites. She writes of an old soldier who offers her chocolate: "The chocolate broke at first like gravel into many separate, disagreeable bits...Then they grew soft, and melted voluptuously." Then a doctor offers her bread, admonishing, "Never eat chocolate without bread, young lady!" There is a delicious denouement: "...in two minutes my mouth was full of fresh bread, and melting chocolate, and as we sat gingerly, the three of us, on the frozen hill...we peered shyly and silently at each other and chewed at one of the most satisfying things I have ever eaten..."
This was a time of great importance for Fisher, and she generously shares her experiences in a richly satisfying book. It's a small treasure.
Book Description
Diana, the Princess of Wales, was one of the most publicly covered figures in the modern world. Known as "the people's princess," Diana captivated all who knew her. Much has already been written about her life, both professionally and personally, but until now no one has told her story in the way that only one man can-Paul Burrell-whom she described as both "her rock" and "the only man I can trust."
Now comes the long awaited book, A ROYAL DUTY by Paul Burrell, the man in whom she confided on matters big and small. Paul, one of the Queen's personal footmen, met Diana during one of her first visits to Balmoral Castle. And while it may have been fate that brought them together, they shared a strong bond that endured to the end of her life. Burrell became Diana's confidant and his unique perspective casts new light on the Princess of Wales and the events that would shape her life and the lives of those around her.
At the time of her death there was much speculation about Diana's future plans including her thoughts about remarrying and the possibility of relocating to America. Paul, who was one of the last people to speak with her, hopes to set the record straight for the Princess he so admired and cherished. Drawing on private conversations, personal recollections, diaries and letters, Paul has written an extraordinary account of a unique time in the history of the Royal Family.
When asked why he wrote the book, this is what Paul had to say. "I have made this book as true to her spirit as possible-as inspiring, as loving, as fun. Over the last six years I've had time to reflect on the extraordinary events that I have witnessed. During that time, I have watched and listened patiently as many individuals have claimed to know the truth about the Princess of Wales. I have watched and listened knowing that what was claimed to be the truth is actually far from it. I decided reluctantly to tell what I know to be the truth because I firmly believe that someone has to stand in the Princess' corner and fight for her now that she cannot do so. I welcome the official inquest into her death and it is my hope that it will uncover what really happened that night in Paris. I never thought that I would need to write this book but then I never thought that I would need to redress the balance. I never thought that I would need to defend the Princess against untruths from many different quarters. I was devoted to the Royal Family for many years-first to the Queen, then to the Prince of Wales and finally to the Princess and I remain a loyal subject. But I believe that it is important that the truth is known NOW rather than waiting for the details to emerge in official papers when they are released in 25 years."
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully Written & Wonderfully Candid.......2007-07-28
Being a tremendous fan of H.R.H. Diana,Princess of Wales, I was fully prepared to read the butler's account of what he thought he knew about Diana and the royal family. I was not prepared to read anything of substance other than a bit of inside information that only someone who had been in service would know. I was therefore delighted and very well pleased that what I was reading was so much more than I ever thought it could or would be. Paul Burrel has put his heart and soul on the line in order to give us the Diana we all wanted her to be. Her impact on the Burrell family, most especially Paul, was enormous and not unlike the indelible impression she left on the world. Her life with H.R.H. Charles, Prince of Wales and heir to the throne was told with sincerity, empathy and the candour of someone who knew both intimately because he served both. His experiences went beyond serving the Prince and Princess and were preceded with 10 years of personal service to Her Majesty, the Queen. To say, simply, that he knew the entire family is an understatement of import, for Paul Burrell was privvy to more and trusted much more than a regular servant would be in the royal households. Diana trusted him implicitly but not immediately. Such was her mistrust of all highly placed staff members and such was the uncertainty that came from within. Paul takes us on the journey of his life with the "Royals" and his incredible closeness to the Princess of Wales. I was truly swept away by his brilliant insights, his love and caring for Diana and the fact that even through death no secret would be revealed to the world that ought not to have been. When Paul sat with the Princess in Paris, after her death, his pain was palpable and his "Royal Duty" had not ended with this tragic event. In many ways, it never would and never can. This is the "Must Read" of all that has been written about this lovely woman who became the heart and soul of a nation and an ambassador of light and goodness to the world.
Getting to know the Royals.......2007-07-05
Paul Burrell has written a wonderful book on the Royal Family and his dedicated service of more than two decades. He shares an insider's view of life in the palaces. He gives his readers a detailed perspective of what it's like being a servant and working his way up to higher positions with more responsibilities and interacting with the Royals. The reader learns of a warm, personal side to the Queen whom he served as her personal footman for several years. I truly believe Mr. Burrell became Princess Diana's personal friend and confidant. It's obvious from what he shares from his heart and in his story. I found myself standing next to Mr. Burrell at each phase of his journey in the life of the Royals. The hardest part was realizing that I was getting towards the end of the book. I am happy to hear Mr. Burrell has another book out soon so I can take another journey with him in remembering Princess Diana.
A very very good book.......2007-06-29
I liked this book very much. Paul starts out with a behind the scenes view
of what life was like in Buckingham Palace for a "servant". Very informative and entertaining. He details how he came to be and what it was like to be Lady Di's butler and how his relationship with her changed
over the years. If you want to know what Lady Di was like as his "boss",
her relationship with her boys and with the rest of the Royal Family, and the paparatizzi,
you should read this book as well as his followup book "The Way We Were". I believe there was no one closer to her on a daily basis the last few years of her life than Paul Burrell.
A Royal Duty.......2007-05-07
What a beautifully written book. It seemed to speak right from Paul Burrell's heart! I was filled with emotion the whole time I was reading it! I never wanted to put this book down. If you love Diana, you'll most likely love this book!
Most revealing and excellent book about Princess Diana.......2007-03-26
Paul Burrell has written the best read on Princess Diana that has been written to date. It is better than The Truth by Judy Wade - it allows you to feel as if you knew Diana personally! He was a totally devoted butler, friend, confidente, and the one who stood by her side long after her death! Yea for Paul!
