Can an extended family vacation to Europe be a unique and rewarding experience? Absolutely, says Cynthia Harriman, who has gathered wisdom gained from months of travel abroad with her family into this comprehensive and essential guide. Complete with anecdotes and witty cartoons, this book includes tips about where to stay, where to eat, language skills, and finding affordable fun for the entire family. I knew I was in trouble with this book when the author said she could not be bothered with European train schedules and therefore provided NO information about train travel with kids. Instead, there are pages about buying a car to avoid rental prices! Our trip was train-based and we highly recommend the trains. We left this book and all its irrelevant information at home, and recommend you do too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on planning any trip with your family.......2005-02-02

I read this book when I was starting to plan a trip for our family and I am really glad that I was lucky enough to start with this one. There are some specifics for different countries (England, France, etc) which are extremely helpful for finding appropriate activities for families, but the most helpful section is the more general information on planning a trip. How to pack for different types of travel, how to negotiate an itinerary and what are reasonable expectations. This book gave me the courage to plan a fantastic trip for our family myself and we had a great time.

4 out of 5 stars Go to Europe with the help you need!.......2005-01-30

Harriman does a great job spelling Europe out... how it really is. I especially like the
"Totally Biased" reports on areas at the end of the book. I was also grateful for some
money saving tips. Harriman says that the book is not for those who have the money to
come back and try it all again next summer and that certainly is not us! This is the "Once
in a life time" help we needed. We have 5 kids, and 7 in Europe seemed like an impossible
      dream, but we did it!

Why only 4 stars? It is a good book that admitted that it needed to be paired with other
travel books. I wish there was a good travel book with kids (and kids at heart) in mind.
We do use and like Rick Steves books.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the game's esoterica.......2003-06-17

If any pro football book deserves to be expanded and updated, it's this jewel of an effort. Daly and O'Donnell have produced a fascinating retrospective of all that makes football what it is, and reveal some little-known bits and pieces that even the most studied fan won't be aware of. A pity it's over a decade out of date . . .

There are no canonisations and platitudes here (for instance, the book criticises in detail Vince Lombardi's late-sixties draft choices and suggests he might have handed Phil Bengtson something of a poisoned chalice - an interesting theory, if nothing else), and no tedious top-ten-this or worst-five-that lists for the more mentally challenged. Instead, there are decade-by-decade glimpses of the game which, taken together, produce the best historical, fan-level portrait of the NFL I've ever come across.

My only complaint - and it's a small one - is that the book does fall back on the inevitable statistical section and identifies what it believes to be the "greatest" players. There's enough of this junk in other books ("Total Football" leaps to mind); I would have preferred more pages of esoterica and amusing photographs.

This is a book really worth searching out for if your idea of a good read is something other than a fawning biography or Officially Licensed propaganda.

5 out of 5 stars Great job O'D!.......2003-04-09

Great job on the book Mr. O'Donnell. We're very proud to see you represent Wakefield High School. Also, we don't think that you should stop writing. You're a great writer (as you can probably tell by all these wonderful reviews). Keep up the wonderful work. We love you! Best wishes from your favorite girls, Holly, Rahel, and Remela <-- (I wrote it)

5 out of 5 stars Do not miss this book...........2002-05-15

quite frankly, this is the most entertaining pro football book I have ever read, and I believe I have read the vast majority of them. It has inside stories that you will not find the details on anywhere. It is funny, historical, and factual. I just wish there was an updated version. I have worn out my original copy I bought 10 years ago and am now on my second copy.

5 out of 5 stars Wow. No, WOW!.......2002-02-13

Boy oh boy, do whatever you have to do to get a copy of this in your hot little off-season hands. (Today is Feb 13) I've been a fan all my life, so I think I know a few stories, but every single page in this book is a joy ... so much I've never heard of, or have only heard of peripherally ... and ALL told in utterly entertaining fashion. I can't put the book down. I have just one complaint: when are the guys who wrote this going to do an update? When, when, when? I want the first copy.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite sports book ever!.......2001-12-11

It's funny how you see baseball book after baseball book exploring the past, analyzing the statistics, and uncovering untold stories. Very few football books have ever come out to fill this void, except for this great work. This book is eleven years old, and I still find myself going to it at least several times a football season. Pro Footbal Chronicle profiles forgotten stars such as Big Daddy Lipscomb and Hardy Brown. It tells of the attempt to fix the 1946 NFL Championship and of the saga of Red Grange from college to the pros. It explores the unbreakable records, the big hits, the classic rivalries and....I could go on and on, but I won't. The reason is simply that you should buy it. It is the best sports book ever writen about the greatest sport ever played. I just hope there is an updated version in the works, which would shed some new light on the largely untold story of pro football's roots.

            Book Description

The Legendary Leaders, Weapons, Battlefields, And Tactics That Defined 4,000 Years Of Warfare

What was the most effective infantry weapon of the Medieval world? Which defeat was the worst ever suffered by a Roman army? Was Erwin Rommel the best general of World War II, or the most overrated? And which legendary military leader endured the most embarrassing commanding debut in history?

The answers to these and hundreds more of the questions regularly asked and argued over by armchair generals are brought together in one illustrated compilation. Within this thought-provoking and comprehensive volume, you'll witness the first victory won through small arms fire (Cerignola, April 1503) and walk among the worst army ever assembled (the rabble led by Peter the Hermit in the First Crusade), visit the greatest castle (the Crusader fortress of Krak de Chevaliers, in Syria) and fire the most common firearm in history, the Brown Bess. The topics are examined in fascinating detail, with careful analysis of how and why each leader, weapon, battle, or tactic came to fame—or infamy. These amazing inside stories examine the heroes and the hapless, the finest hours and worst blunders the military world has yet seen.

Essential reading for military history buffs of any stripe, the book covers the very best and worst of every period of warfare, from ancient times to the 21st century.

No activity has had greater impact on mankind than war. It has destroyed entire civilizations, made kings of peasants and stripped rulers of their power, inspired every art form, ensured the growth or demise of religions, spurred invention and creativity. And like every human endeavor, warfare has its key figures and crucial developments: those people, weapons, and tactics that—for better or worse—made an indelible impact upon the field of battle and thus influenced the course of history.

Extreme War is the first and only book to gather the pivotal generals, battles, and technological advancements of 4,000 years of martial history in one place. Within the pages of this extraordinary compendium are the stories behind the subjects, including deep and insightful analysis of why each battlefield tactic arose and succeeded or failed, and how the legendary leaders achieved their vaunted victories or suffered ignominious defeat. It details where and when the introduction of new weaponry shifted the advantage and altered the map, and how a single flawed decision could suddenly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and cost a battle…or an empire.

Across land, on and under the sea, and in the air above, the superlatives of combat unfold. From the most decisive drawing of first blood to the most famous last stand, the weapons, strategies, and tactics that forever shaped the world through force of arms are fully explored.

Extreme War provides well-reasoned and documented answers to hundreds of questions military buffs want to know and explores the blunders and tactical errors that played a formative role in military history. Not without controversy, and sure to start as many discussions as it settles, Extreme War brings compelling detail and rare clarity to the chaos that is combat.

3 out of 5 stars No Challenging Historical Treatise, Just Fun Facts.......2006-12-18

This is rather like the Guiness book of military history. A collection of some of the most, worst, best, biggest, bloodiest, etc. in military history. The author divides the book into several major sections based on an historical period: ancient, medieval, early modern, late 19th and early 20th century, and modern or recent history. Each section is packed with brief descriptions of the record-holding items organized within that section. It is a nice layout for reading in quick little tidbits without having to read in any particular order, just as the interest moves you. Fans of the History channel series, "The Most," will especially enjoy this book since the format is very similar. Not a bad showing for a book of its kind but I did find much of it lacking the detail most serious military history enthusiasts crave.

                            5 out of 5 stars A David Shepherd fan.......2007-08-01

I've been a fan of David Shepherd and a painter studying his work for the past 30 years. What a treat, to now read his book. He shares his unique painting technique with insight into his creative process. A very useful tool for those that appreciate David Shepherd's work and want to improve their oil painting.

5 out of 5 stars Great secrets revealed by a great artist........2004-12-13

When it comes to artwork, I have always admired that which is so accurate it could almost be a photograph - emphasis on "almost." The shipwreck paintings in Bob Ballard's books are a good example of this. When it comes to wildlife - especially African wildlife, however, I can think of no artist in the entire world other than David Shepherd who can make his subjects come to life on a piece of canvass. He does the same with portraits, landscapes, aircraft, famous ships and glorious steam engines. One of his paintings of British paratroopers in action (Suez 1956) hangs in the Officers' Mess of 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment.

There is, therefore, far more to David Shepherd's work than just the elephants for which he has become particularly famous. In addition, he has such a passion for the subjects he paints that he founded the "David Shepherd Conservation Foundation" through which he has channelled enormous funds towards helping and protecting endangered species of the world. How often do we find him on radio and television as he continually draws attention to this subject and that plight.

"Painting with David Shepherd" is not any old "how to" book. This is a book where one of Britain's most popular and successful artists shares his secrets in order to help other artists with their work. Whilst those who know something about this man may well have expected to find a picture of one of his Elephant paintings on the front cover, be assured, this is not all about wildlife. After an informative introduction in which he suggests the reader be prepared to completely re-think their traditional approaches to oil painting, we find sections on; Materials & methods, sketchbook, wildlife, landscapes, trains, boats & planes, the past and portraits. I particularly liked the way in which he draws the readers attention to incidental detail - all of which goes towards the production of a great work of art.

In short, there is something in this book for every artist - be they well established or simply aspiring. I am not an artist - but I have also thoroughly enjoyed this book.

                                      Book Description

Before going off to fight in the Civil War, many soldiers on both sides of the conflict posed for a carte de visite, or visiting card, to give to their families, friends, or sweethearts. Invented in 1854 by a French photographer, the carte de visite was a small photographic print roughly the size of a modern trading card. The format arrived in America on the eve of the Civil War, which fueled intense demand for the convenient and affordable keepsakes. Considerable numbers of these portrait cards of Civil War soldiers survive today, but the experiences -- and often the names -- of the individuals portrayed have been lost to time. A passionate collector of Civil War--era photography, Ron Coddington became intrigued by these anonymous faces and began to research the history behind them in military records, pension files, and other public and personal documents.

In Faces of the Civil War, Coddington presents 77 cartes de visite of Union soldiers from his collection and tells the stories of their lives during and after the war. The soldiers portrayed were wealthy and poor, educated and unschooled, native-born and immigrant, urban and rural. All were volunteers. Their personal stories reveal a tremendous diversity in their experience of war: many served with distinction, some were captured, some never saw combat while others saw little else. The lives of those who survived the war were even more disparate. While some made successful transitions back to civilian life, others suffered permanent physical and mental disabilities, which too often wrecked their families and careers. In compelling words and haunting pictures, Faces of the Civil War offers a unique perspective on the most dramatic and wrenching period in American history.

4 out of 5 stars Every Picture Tells a Story.......2005-02-03

Even casual readers about the U.S. Civil War have seen the haunting images of young soldiers staring stiffly into the
camera for posterity. About to embark into a war of unimagined horror, few of their particular stories were preserved or documented. "Faces of the Civil War" takes those personal mementos and visiting cards as a hook to pull the reader into many previously untold stories. This winning combination of powerful images, extensive archival research, and accessible journalistic writing provides a welcome addition to anyone's Civil War book collection. It also can grab and hold student's interest in this endlessly fascinating era of U.S. history.

When Cathy lost her sight at the age of fourteen, she faced a very different way of life. It took courage and alertness to explore a new, uncharted world where her other senses had to take over the work of her eyes. But adjusting to blindness was often easier than handling the reactions of people. One friend now avoided her. Another smothered Cathy with too much kindness. Then came the thrill of independence after completing a tough training course with Trudy, her wonderful guide dog. With her new freedom of movement, Cathy accepted the challenge of going back to public high school.

1928. After meditations and seeing images created not by human but by the divine imagination, he presents this volume. He has tried according to his capacity to report about the divine order and to discriminate between that which was self-begotten fantasy and that which came from a higher sphere. These retrospects and meditations are the effort of an artist and poet to relate his own vision to the vision of the seers and writers of the sacred books, and to discover what element of truth law in those imaginations.

In this lovely old tome, the author "A.E." does his best to delineate personal mystical experiences through his deep meditations. Although somewhat quaint, it is a brave and courageous effort by the author to put into words, often waxing poetic, that which is often so difficult to describe. A rare find in the occult book world and a true treasure for any collector of this genre!

First published in 1918 this masterpiece by one of the major figures in the western occult tradition discusses concepts that anticipated the modern human potential movement by half a century. Russell taught what we would call creative visualization and believed that the creative powers of imagination could become a passport to other worlds. This study of the true nature of visionary exploration will appeal to the artist and the poet as well as the mystic.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Visionary Inspiration.......2004-05-24

There are similarities between George Russell and William Blake but George Russell attempted a rational explanation of visionary inspiration. Although he seemed to be primarily a nature mystic he also described visions which appeared to exceed his imagination. He argues that these visions appear instantaneously and since no artist could possibly create anything so subtle and perfect all at once, they must be memories or visions of something beyond the self.

His logic seems flawed to me. The subconscious is capable of instantly arriving at aesthetic solutions. It can meld dissimilar impressions into a satisfying whole effortlessly and with no apparent intermediate steps. Just like the idiot savant can solve a math problem instantly without doing any calculations. The imagination is capable of miraculous conceptions. To conclude from this that visions are the genuine appearance of the otherworldly because no genius could be so swift is rather doubtful.

George Russell does raise an interesting question about visions that seemingly exceed the imagination. Is this the genius of imagination which requires the visionary to egotistically take credit for the sublime or should the visionary ascribe these visions to something greater and beyond himself? I would argue that the subconscious contains much that the conscious mind is utterly unfamiliar with but that this is no reason to see subconscious imagery as being beyond the self. It is merely beyond the conscious self.

Candle of Vision is not just a book that I enjoy reading. I actually forced myself to only read one chapter per night to spread the enjoyment out over a few weeks! Full of images and phrases of beauty. Thanks to AE (George William Russell)those of us who don't have second sight are finally allowed a glimpse into the many colored land of Celtic magic.
