Finally - a book with Central California Listed.......2007-07-05

Although I didn't find nearly as many acceptable shoredive sites as I was looking for - I thought the book was great. It described the dive sites and characteristics and all the "need to know" stuff. I just wish it would have shown more dives a little further south. Is there any diving say, between, Moonstone Beach and Pismo?

I am very satisfied with this book on tape! I do past life regression for my clients and it's really nice to have an expert in the field that I can learn more from.

It was not so much the regressions into the past lives but the "rest periods" that interested me. The emphasis on teaching and helping spirits learn to change their flawed characters, in preparation for their next lives, confirmed some theories I had. From observation of spirit visits I know there are at least two laws: If you tell unwanted visitors to go away, they must obey. And they do not speak to us living. They do speak among themselves. My husband's spirit visits me at least twice a day. I talk to him but he cannot respond. If he could, I would have everything out of him in ten minutes because there is so much I want to know about the afterlife, and it must remain a mystery. Why, I do not know. He did answer one question: I asked how he was, and he wagged his hand in the comme si, comme ca gesture. According to Brian L. Weiss, Masters help those who are in need of guidance. Perhaps that is what my husband is doing, though I dare not presume he is on a high plane. Still, I might add one more facet to Weiss's thesis. Other, more evolved, spirits and not necessarily Masters, also teach. My husband brings home other spirits, some very primitive types who were probably clueless in life. I know he has befriended them. I found confirmation of my thoughts in Dr. Weiss's book.

Good reading...but I had some problems.......2007-09-23

First I "read" this book via an audio book version. I think Dr. Weiss is totally believable in his honest search to help Catherine. I think his approach will open many minds to explore or widen their religion/spiritual belief systems. Although I have some problems with some details contained in the book, I do think he has been a great help to those who are dying & their families.

The issues that I had problems with: 1. The MALE voice of the Masters...do
the "learned" ones always have to be male!! Perhaps the Masters used a male voice since they told him they were channeling their knowledge for him & not Catherine. With his cultural & belief system, a male voice would be more effective for him to consider the teachings. BUT not for me!! I would be more apt to listen a little more closely to a FEMALE Master; 2. the term "god" is mentioned 2-3 times toward the end of the book...It just seems like it should have been introduced earlier to me and 3. There is no mention of "WHO" or "WHAT" conceived Reincarnation plus its level system. I found that a big omission.

Fabulous Insight & Resource.......2007-09-09

This book has been invaluable to me over the years and I've read it time and again. Weiss lets us into the "inner circle" of therapy and shows us how ordinary people can experience physical and emotional pain from unresolved issues in another lifetime. Read this book and you will never look at your life and challenges in the same way again. It provides hope and courage and is a must-read for anyone seeking wholeness and understanding. Many Masters, Many Lives gave me the insight essential to my own novels of karma and past lives, in particular Field of Destiny.

Brendan returned home with the understanding that his adventures, good and bad, had brought him closer to God. In a postscript the author links Brendan with Columbus and with modern sailor Tim Severin, who in 1976 retraced Brendan's route in a replica curragh using Brendan's Navigatio as his guide.

This richly illustrated book captures Brendan's spirit and legacy and his incredible adventures as he journeyed to America in the sixth century. It will make wonderful reading for children, who will be excited to learn about this saint after whom so many are named.

In the new book Saint Brendan and the Voyage Before Columbus (Paulist Press, December 2004, paperback, 32 pages) author Dr. Mike McGrew and illustrator Marnie Saenz Litz share the story of St. Brendan and his legendary voyage to North America.

A beautifully illustrated book, Dr. McGrew did a wonderful job telling the story of St. Brendan in a way that is thorough, yet succinct. It is a book that both parent and child can enjoy.

Maybe theoretical physicists don't know finance.......2000-03-02

This book is one more in the long line of books that takes an author's training in a field of science or engineering and then tries to export it wholesale into understanding the markets. I've seen it done with engineers using the principles of signal processing and torque, physicists using -- believe it or not -- general relativity, so I guess I should not be surprised someone would pull out the really big guns of modern physics. It may be fun for the author's fellow physicists, but speaking as a finance professional with a Ph.D. and nearly twenty years on Wall Street, there are a lot of other places I would be going to understand and implement contingent claim theory before I would invest the time or money in this book.

Applies theory from modern physics to financial analysis.......1999-04-03

Although I am not specialized in the field of financial analysis, I believe that it is important and useful to quantitatively describe financial phenomena. Therefore, this new theory and new method will certainly contribute to the establishment of a standard model of financial analysis. I hope the publication of this book will help people to understand, improve and apply the theory, introduced from modern theoretical physics by the author, for practical application in financial analysis.

The recognition of patterns in natural systems is the most significant step towards the full understanding of the dynamics of such systems. In the context of financial markets, the degree to which one appreciates these dynamics is the degree to which one is profitable. Beliefs-Preferences Gauge Symmetry Group and Replication of Contingent Claims in a General Market Environment not only identifies the key concepts in the understanding of the financial markets, but also lays out a rich display of tools and applications with which to analyze financial phenomena.

From the book's outset, the emphasis is on the role and formulation of mathematical symmetries, which govern the evolution of quantities such as derivative payoffs or prices in the marketplace. The key concept is summarized in the words of the author when he conjectures that, "the absence of some type of arbitrage opportunity in the marketplace indicates the presence of a certain inherent symmetry." From this powerful observation, he proceeds to formulate the active degrees of freedom in the market (i.e. the market participants) and the symmetric implications of this statement. Dr. Valery Kholodnyi's book, "Beliefs-Preferences Gauge Symmetry Group and Replication of Contingent Claims in a General Market Environment" is a remarkable work, from the innovative principal idea to the precise development of the details. The book can be complimented both for its overall depth of presentation and structure. Starting from a very general new model of the market environment, the author sets up a formal algebraic system that allows the powerful tools and fundamental principles of symmetry from physics and math to be used. This approach also shows the way to potentially formalize other sciences that are traditionally thought of as being less suitable for rigorous mathematical treatment.

For me it was also impressive to observe the structural organization of the book. The necessary financial and mathematical background material is reviewed prior to its use, so that the work can be appreciated on its own even by readers with less experience in group theory or other mathematical tools used in the book. The presentation of material is clear and precise throughout the book, with continuous and logical development of ideas --not a "given" among the books of this type and certainly an impressive indication of the author's writing skills and the amount of work put into the book.

I hope the book will continue to find a good response among the financial professionals for whom it is intended.

It is Beginning to Happen.......2007-02-11

I purchased the hardback version when it was first available because I had found Ms Zuboff's other book and her presentations to be enlightening and perceptive regarding the impact of the computer and information technology. That was a few years ago but I have continued to look for markers indicating the concepts in The Support Economy were as perceptive as they seemed. Many of those markers are appearing. Individual pods of services that will be required are now appearing in startup companies and old line service vendors. It will be a while before the necessary institutional compromises will occur that ties the services together but it is happening.

I repeatedly loaned out the hardcopy and recently bought a softback copy to insure I had a reference copy available. If an electronic copy is later made available I will purchase it as well (I find reference information in an electronic version is so much more efficient).

I am smarter than you !.......2005-11-04

The core of the book is correct, but much is an attempt to show how clever the writers are and how much research they have collected over the years. Sure a business does need the people who drive their own car to a passenger's home 150 miles away to deliver a birthday present left on their aircraft, but if you have more than a few of these, you go broke. If things look too good compared to the world around them then they probably they are just too good to be real. Markets are a fine balance bewteen giving paying customers what they will pay for, and having a few layers of very thin gold plate (based on extreme service stories) that make the offer look better than what they are paying for today. Ask anyone who started a business (and gets paid last after the staff and the government) if they believe in the tooth fairy of good times capitalism, and they will tell you if this exists, they are yet to see it.

An Outstanding Diagnosis.......2004-01-06

I strongly recommend The Support Economy.

I'll start with the negatives -- it took me about 100 pages to really get into it; like most business books the authors repeat themselves; the future state they outline is sketchy; and they don't even really attempt to describe how we get from here to there.

The reason I'm recommending it is that Zuboff and Maxmin absolutely nail the diagnosis of what's wrong with the interaction between producers and consumers today -- the way that individuals (at home and at work) are the shock absorbers between what enterprises know how to do and what people today need; the reason that managerial capitalism has to give way to, well, something new that they call "distributed capitalism;" the need to move beyond the relentless optimization of transactions and towards the maximization of value in the context of people's lives. And, thinking about my own situation and those of many of my peers, it just rings true. My personal trainer (who is also an event planner) is a kind of poster child for this new capitalism.

While "support" is in the title, this isn't a book about technical support -- it's about a new value proposition of people helping people, not just better-products-cheaper. That being said, it is strongly influencing my thinking about technical support in general and my consulting company's value proposition in particular.

Stellar!!.......2003-09-17

This book has changed the way I think about the world and business. I never thought about the fact that when markets change the way we do business must change. The book calls us ' history's shock absorbers" as we live with the pain and opportunity that arises when one business model is dying and another is being born. The book is packed with insights, facts and theory that open the mind to a new way of doing business. It is ground breaking stuff. We never think about capitalism in our everyday business lives but maybe we should have done . We are part of history and we can make more money and build better corporations if we really understood this. I would recommend this book to everyone. It is a great read and a map to a new future.

A Pedantic Mess of a Good Idea.......2003-09-10

These authors are on the right track but they are more interested in impressing readers with their vocabulary than following through with some do-able solutions. I firmly believe that corporations need to catch up to what the customer really wants but this book meanders through a maze of technical and non-related issues which distract from the great theme it is about. I trudged through the whole book waiting for an answer to the problem I could understand but there was absolutely no common sense I could grasp that would lead me to a satisfactory conclusion. Felt like I was back in school again. Ugh!

Don't Bother Unless You Are A CPA.......2001-02-14

This is an addendum to an accounting text. Dry and Byzantine,it is impossible to read through without going comatose or homicidal. Quite possibly the most disappointing primer I have ever read! This may have value to those high priest of accounting used to forging through the arcane network of complicated accounting phrases. To the layman or to someone interested in learning on his/her own I have only five words of advice: DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

This is an excellent study on board leadership and should be read by any person serving on a non-profit board.

A Model for What the Ideal Nonprofit Board Should Do.......2000-11-26

If you are like me, you arrived with no idea of what to do the first time you sat on a nonprofit board. If that board was not well organized, you sat down on your second nonprofit board with about the same level of understanding.

Nonprofit organizations, especially smaller and newer ones, tend to be "amateur hour" operations. They usually have neither good governance nor good management. Unfortunately, they need both much more than most for profit and nonprofit organizations that do have them.

The nonprofit organizations that focus relentlessly on improving governance and management do far more good than those who do not. So these are important subjects. I doubt if you can have very good management without good governance first. Governance creates the organizational direction and the discipline that encourages good management. Unless someone is reviewing how you are doing, even the most talented manager will soon become lazy about learning from experience.

I recommend that anyone who is on a nonprofit board or is considering joining one should read this book. You will have a much more rewarding board experience if you do. You can also share this book with others on the board, and challenge them to work with you to make the needed changes. I certainly plan to do this with the board I sit on now.

By the way, chances are that your board will never quite get to this "gold standard" described here. But at least you will know what you are and are not doing, and can focus on the more important steps.

The book breaks the board's responsibility down into mission, responsibility for money, and for management.

Top priority is "establishing the mission and monitoring the organization's progress in achieving that mission." This may involve modifying the mission from time to time. This is very critical, because you either have a mission that gets volunteers and donors excited or you are dead in the water. Habitat for Humanity and the Girl Scouts have done this well.

The board next needs to create a "vision for the future of the organization and [develop] a plan for achieving that vision."

After that, the board needs to ensure "progress in serving the mission of the organization . . . [in meeting] the needs of clients" and in the effectiveness of programs.

The board also needs to be sure that the mission and programs are communicated "effectively with its various publics."

The money side all fits under being a "steward for organizational resources." The tasks include having a formal development plan, making an annual contribution to the organization, and participating in fund-raising activities. In addition, risks should be identified and ensured and insured against as best as one can.

In the area of management, the board has to select, support, evaluate, (and terminate, when necessary) the CEO. The board has to evaluate its own effectiveness at each meeting, as well.

If your board isn't willing to start working on this items, I suggest you consider looking for another board that is. Certainly, you may be in for a lot of heartache if you a join a board that is going to ignore these areas.

Create more good by having a more effective board!

This was Rabbi Dresner's final work. It is a moving tribute to his own beloved teacher. It is too a connection of his thought to Hasidism and Halakhah . It is written with great devotion and understanding. A wonderful little book.
