From a 15-minute jaunt to a New England century, Paul Thomas's 46 bicycle rides cover every kind of scenery, level of difficulty, and appeal. Take the Cape Ann Cruise, for example. Up in the northeast corner of Massachusetts near New Hampshire, the ride starts and ends in Manchester, is relatively flat with a few rolling hills thrown in for contrast, and loops along the historic North Shore. You can do the 22-mile route along Cape Ann's rocky coast, past summer estates and fishermen's cottages, working waterfronts and harbor towns. Or you can opt for the 36-mile loop, taking in Singing Beach and the Hammond Castle. There's a 28-mile Mystic Seaport Ramble in Connecticut, the Kennebec Crossing Challenge (55 miles of riverside hills) in Maine, and the 100-mile tour of rural Vermont, starting in Jamaica and traversing a number of challenging hills en route to the ride's end in Waitsfield. With historical notes on the regions and towns; basic summaries of ride length, terrain, traffic, and food options; a map of the routes; and a detailed set of directions and instructions, Thomas's compact guide to New England bike routes strikes the perfect balance of concise, clear, and practical information. --Stephanie GoldBook Description

Más que un indio: "More than an Indian." Two decades ago, the phrase expressed a common-sense prescription for upward mobility in a racist society: to better themselves, Indians had to abandon their culture and identity. Ironically, today it captures the predicament of ladinos, members of Guatemalas dominant culture. In the 1990s, Maya people organized in diverse ways to challenge racism and achieve basic rights. They achieved a broad recognition of their cultural rights during the same time that neoliberal economic reforms carried the day.The resulting "neoliberal multiculturalism" has opened important spaces for indigenous empowerment while recreating Guatemala's racial hierarchy. The author examines this paradox through the eyes of provincial ladinos, who show growing respect for indigenous culture and support for equality while harboring deep anxieties about the prospect of Maya ascendancy. Their racial ambivalence embodies a desire to be free of racism without ceasing to benefit from ingrained racial privilege, epitomized by the belief that ladinos are "más que un indio." This deeply researched and sensitively rendered study raises troubling questions about the contradictions of anti-racist politics and the limits of multiculturalism in Guatemala and, by implication, other countries in the midst of similar reform projects.

Una Excursion a Los Indios Ranqueles
Lucio V. Mansilla , and Juan Carlos Casas Manufacturer: Stockcero ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9871136021 |
Book Description
In Spanish. One of the great classics of nineteenth-century Argentine prose, and one of the finest and subtlest books ever written on an American frontier -both North and South-, Lucio V. Mansilla's "Una excursión " was first published in Argentina in 1870 and is one of very few works in American letters that presents a vivid, firsthand account of a noncombative encounter between Native American and European civilizations. Colonel Mansilla, widely traveled and cultured aristocrat was an exception among his contemporaries, as he advocated for an open dialogue as best approach to the "Indian problem". In the end the peace accord he sought to enact with the Ranquels was summarily disregarded by the Argentine government, which slowly gravitated towards a policy of ethnic cleansing and expropriation of Indian lands. Mansilla humourously calls his expedition an "excursion", elegantly downplaying the jest of visiting belligerant natives in largely unknown areas of the Argentine interior. His careful observations offer valuable ethnographic data, as Argentina's Indians were almost totally extinguished or assimilated soon after. Mansilla's work both in this account and elsewhere made him a leading figure in the Argentina "Generation of 1880," a group crucial in the development of Argentine literary and intellectual life.Customer Reviews:

The Philosophy of John Scottus Eriugena: A Study of Idealism in the Middle Ages
Dermot Moran Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521892821 |
Book Description
This work is a substantial contribution to the history of philosophy. Its subject, the ninth-century philosopher John Scottus Eriugena, developed a form of idealism that owed as much to the Greek Neoplatonic tradition as to the Latin fathers and anticipated the priority of the subject in its modern, most radical statement: German idealism. Moran has written the most comprehensive study yet of Eriugena’s philosophy, tracing the sources of his thinking and analyzing his most important text, the Periphyseon. This volume will be of special interest to historians of mediaeval philosophy, history, and theology.Customer Reviews:

Eriugena, Berkeley, and the Idealist Tradition
Manufacturer: University of Notre Dame Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0268029695 |
Book Description
The contributors in this volume take up the question of "idealism" in the history of philosophy from Plato, through late ancient and medieval thought, to Berkeley, Kant, and Hegel. They cover a wide range of philosophical writers and texts to which the label "idealism" has been, or might reasonably, be attached; these include Plato, the Roman Stoics, the Neoplatonism of Plotinus, Augustinian Neoplatonism, Johannes Scottus Eriugena, the Arabic Book of Causes, George Berkeley, Immanuel Kant, and classical German idealism. "This is a rich, subtle, thought-provoking collection on central, though neglected topics in idealism and its history, offering fresh and important insights into both familiar and less familiar major figures, views, and issues. Most important, perhaps, are its presentation and assessment of non-subjective forms of idealism, as well as mind-dependence forms of idealism prior to Descartes. Contemporary philosophers have become sophisticated about various forms of realism, anti-realism and irrealism. Such discussions, among others, will benefit significantly by accepting this volume,s invitation to become more sophisticated about idealism as well. This very welcome contribution to the literature should find a broad readership." Kenneth R. Westphal, University of East Anglia"If it is trueas Hegel and his followers have claimedthat being and truth are indissociable from history, then philosophy cannot be successful if it limits itself exclusively to investigations of individual thinkers and periods. What is at stake, ultimately, is the development of Western thought as a whole. In this volume, a fine international group of scholars investigate the meaning of idealism across the ages. Without sacrificing nuance, their contributions show that a core of shared assumptions characterizes idealist philosophies. The historical dialogue which this volume advances emphasizes the relevance of ancient and medieval thinkers for the current debate, but it also challenges us to place modern representatives of idealismsuch as Berkeley, Kant, and Hegelin historical perspective." John Scottus Eriugena (Great Medieval Thinkers)
Deirdre Carabine Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195113624 |
Book Description
John Scottus Eriugena, the ninth-century Irish philosopher and theologian, is known as the interpreter of Greek thought to the Latin West. He was perhaps the most important philosophical thinker to appear in Latin Christendom between Augustine in the fifth century and Anselm in the eleventh. In this volume, Deirdre Carabine provides a clear and accessible introduction--the only one available in the English language--to the thought of this important figure. In part I, Carabine describes the intellectual revival of the ninth century and situates Eriugena's role within that movement. She looks closely at Eriugena's life and intellectual achievements, including his contribution to the theological controversy on predestination and his roles as teacher and translator of Greek thought. She also examines the Periphyson, undoubtedly Eriugena's most original and important work. In part II, Carabine discusses Eriugena's metaphysics, the structure of reality, the theocentric character of creation, and the role of the trinity and the primordial causes. In particular, she explores Eriugena's employment of negative theology and his understanding of human nature. In conclusion, part III looks at Eriugena's interpretation of the return of all things to their source, including his belief that all people, saints and sinners alike, will return to paradise to the "vision" of a transcendent God. Revealing the unique and compelling nature of Eriugena's thought, and showing why his work continues to appeal to a modern audience, this volume is required reading for students and scholars of medieval philosophy and theology.Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to Eriugena.......2006-11-17
An Excellent Introduction to an Unjustly Forgotten Thinker.......2003-02-13
Although time has not been kind to Eriugena, his contibution to both philosophy and Christian theology cannot be denied. He stands out as an intellectual bridge between the age of Augustine and Pseudo-Dionysus and Anselm during an age when Europe was only beginning to get back on its intellectual feet. His most original and important work, the "Periphyson", remains as possibly the most important philosophical text of its time.
Carabine examines not only Eriugena the teacher and translator of Greek thought, but also Eriugena, upon whom that Greek thought, especially in its Neoplatonic form, lay at the heart of his metaphysics and his attempt to reintroduce the notion of Being back into philosophy.
An introduction, especially to such an original and compelling thinker as Eriugena can either scare us away from further studies or prod us on to learn more. Carabine has successfully accomplished the latter, and more power to her.

A Thirteenth-Century Textbook of Mystical Theology at the University of Paris: The Mystical Theology of Dionysius the Areopagite in Eriugena's Latin Translation ... (Dallas Medieval Texts and Translations)
Manufacturer: Peeters ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 9042913940 |
Book Description
The luminaries of late thirteenth-century Europe took great interest in the mysterious fifth-century author known as Dionysius the Areopagite. They typically read Dionysius not in the original Greek, but in a Latin edition prepared sometime in the middle of the thirteenth century. This edition, which appeared first in Paris and later circulated all over Western Europe, was no mere translation. In addition to the famous translation made by Eriugena in the ninth century, it contained translations of scholia on the Dionysian texts made by Anastasius the Librarian, alternative readings provided by Anastasius and other Latin readers, as well as excerpts from Eriugena's own theological masterwork, the Periphyseon. University scholars such as Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas thus learned Dionysian mystical theology not only from his text, but from the seven-hundred year interpretive tradition that literally surrounded it on the page.

Eriugena
John J. O'Meara Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 019826674X |
Book Description
This book deals with Johannes Scottus Eriugena, an Irish scholar at the Court of Charles the Bald in France in the second half of the ninth century - to be clearly distinguished from John Duns Scotus (1264-1308), after whom `Scotist' philosophy is named. Eriugena's main work, Periphyseon (de divisione naturae), is a remarkable attempt at a real intellectual synthesis between the Bible and Neoplatonist philosophy. It was not looked upon with great favour in the West except by the mystics and, more recently, by German Idealist philosophers of the last century. Now, however, because of the growth of interest in Medieval Studies, there is an increasing curiosity about Eriugena and his work - but there has been no comprehensive book about him since that of M. Cappuyns in 1933. Bringing together the results of the most recent research on Eriugena, this book discusses his background in Ireland and life in France, and of his career as teacher, controversialist, translator, and poet. It gives an extended and careful summary of the Periphyseon, and the first translation into English of the brief Homily on the Prologue to St.John's Gospel.

The Anthropology of Johannes Scottus Eriugena (Brill's Studies in Intellectual History)
Willemien Otten Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9004093028 |
Book Description
This book deals with Eriugena's anthropology in the general context of his thinking on universal nature. At the outset the role of man seems to be conditioned by nature's dynamic development through the Neoplatonic stages of procession and return. As man is located at the turning- point between procession and return, he is not only governed by nature's unfolding, but can also exercise control over it. Thus it is shown that man should be seen as much more independent than the cosmological structure of Eriugena's philosophy of nature seems to indicate. The study of Eriugena's anthropology urges a re-evaluation of the position of man in the early medieval period. Although man characteristically possesses a sinful, created state, Eriugena shows that this does not prevent him from entertaining a free and direct relationship with God and the surrounding universe. In dealing with the problem of human sin, Eriugena brings out Christ's saving role, but it seems counterbalanced by man's intrinsic potential as the "divine image" to rehabilitate himself. In this respect Eriugena's flexible method of reasoning - his handling of negative theology, theophany and allegorical exegesis - serves as a remarkable example of human independence in what has so often been portrayed as the "static" early-medieval world.
