          5 out of 5 stars A good read........2005-10-01

I read this one after reading Plantation. The two books I have read so far by this author; Plantation and Unforgettable were both very good. I am surprised to find that this author is so unknow. No one I know has ever heard of her, and most of her books are out of print. I had to borrow both books from the library.

So anyway, if you can find a copy, I would recommend reading them, as I said they were very good.

Unforgettable is so different from Ms. Smith-Brown's last book Plantation. This romantic suspense kept me--as they say-- turning the pages! A warm, feel good novel. Makes one believe fairytales really DO come true. Looking forward to her next book.

Fern Smith-Browns Unforgetable is a joy to read. It's a love story with intrigue, suspense, chivalry and endearing characters you won't soon forget. I found it most enjoyable reading.

                  5 out of 5 stars Perfect guide.......2006-12-28

this book is probably the best guide book I have ever used. It has really good info. It has information on both rims of the canyon and some surrounding areas of Arizona. It has a useful metric-standard conversion table in the back. Bill Weir writes like an expert. The book will make you an expert on the grand canyon. Not only does it contain tourist information but it also has history and facts about the canyon. Great travel tool.

5 out of 5 stars The best Arizona guidebook since, well, forever?.......2007-02-19

I've been relying on Bill Weir's Moon guide since it first came out in 1986. I still have a first edition in storage somewhere (I think). These comments apply to the 9th edition, published in early 2005 -- which means a 10th edition is likely in preparation as I write this review.

In addition to the 9th ed., I have in front of me the 6th ed. of 1996. It's interesting to compare the two. The older book is a "svelte" 488 pages; the new one weighs in at a hefty 650 pp., and is a bit larger-format, too. The newer book has, well, more stuff, better paper (less show-through), better maps, but doesn't appear as sturdily-bound as the older one, and lacks the nice rounded corners.

I've lived in Arizona for 30 years, but always learn something new thumbing through Weir's guide. About the only weakness is the occasional dodgy restaurant review -- and in fairness, these are 2-3 year old reviews.

If you live in Arizona, or plan to travel here, you need this guidebook. So, what are you waiting for?

OK, you can wait for the 10th ed. if you live here. Others, grit your teeth, fork over your 15 bucks. Money well-spent: half a tank of gas, a cheap restaurant meal....

                  Happy travelling--

                  5 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2007-01-12

We have purchased about 7 Moon Books with Arizona being the latest purchase. Good refernce books---up to date and easy to read. We find them better than the AAA Tour Books. A fair price. Needs to be kept up to date with changes occurring so often,it is a good idea to check the "published date"

5 out of 5 stars The best Arizona guide out there.......2005-01-19

For anyone planning to visit Arizona, this is definitely the best guide you can bring with you. Although I wish it had more photos give a clue as to what you'll be seeing, the excellent maps, detailed descriptions, and sheer volume of information provided more than makes up for it. I had only a few days in Arizona and didn't have time to waste, so it was important that I find the best places to see while I was there. This book proved to be absolutely vital for my trip. Without it I would never have found many of the interesting sights that I visited. In short, don't go to Arizona without this book.

4 out of 5 stars Hot spots in AZ.......2004-07-17

I recently moved to AZ and knew no one out here and very little about what there was to do. This book is chuck full of fun things to do by region in AZ. It also guides you to great camping spots, hiking trails, even the best places to grab a bite to eat. The only negative about this book is that it does not provide good information on how to get to these great places. Not much in a way of maps. But,other than that, this book is definately worth buying!

                  5 out of 5 stars Best All-Around Arizona Guidebook.......2001-10-05

Recently my wife and I planned a trip to Eastern Arizona. We got copies of all the available guidebooks to Arizona and began going through them for information. It soon became clear that Bill Weir's book had by far the most information. He has been everywhere. The book is well-written, authoritative without being pedantic, and is nicely laid out so that it is easy to use. We especially appreciate his coverage of hiking trails.

When we use an Arizona guidebook the first thing we do is crack it open to its section on Flagstaff, where we live. When we did this, we found that the book passed the acid test. This is the best book of its kind, and the one that we will use from now on.

                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2005-12-21

I read this book in 1992 as an adult. My husband cherished Rood's books which he'd been given as a child by Mr. Rood's parents with whom he'd had many pleasant visits. The books inspired a lifelong love of nature in him. He still talks about the Roods all these years later and their son's wonderful stories.

The porcupine tale lingers with me as a very enjoyable, funny, cute tale. Anyone with a love of nature will love reading and sharing this book. The author's writing is unique and engaging. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Learned a LOT about porcupines.......2001-06-27

This is a darling story of Piney, an orphaned porcupine found by the Rood family. Rood writes about their initial difficulty getting Piney to eat, his destructive chewing habits (destroying their neighbor's ivory umbrella), the games he liked to play, what it was like to live and travel with him, his gentle behavior with strangers, etc. You'll learn a great deal about porcupines in this book and about the misconceptions others have concerning them. It's a well-written book and a quick, enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars A touching story about an unlikely pet.......1999-10-27

Ronald Rood, a naturalist and childrens' book author, finds an orphaned porcupine while taking a forest walk with friends and family. This book is his documentation of how he raised the porcupine, as well as many trials and tribulations of raising an animal one can't easily punish (hence the title), while it stops to dispel many common myths and misinformations about porcupines, and also discusses many of the societal prejudices against animals in general. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes animals in general, especially porcupines. Don't let the title scare you off. :)

                              5 out of 5 stars Gertrude Jekyll's Colour Schemes.......2002-07-31

As an Engish Gardener "displaced in Kansas" this book was a delight. Anyone who wants to plan a garden large or small should turn to this little gem written over 80 years ago. Miss Jekyll was the definitive garden planner, her ideas of colours and seasonal planting will inspire you to create a beautiful garden of your own. Quite the best of her kind.

5 out of 5 stars Classic and influential book on garden design.......1998-03-05

Gertrude Jekyll influences the great gardeners that influence the rest of us. Her book on color is apparently among her best writings. This book is valuable to anyone who is interested in gardening history. Her principles are also at the heart of modern English garden design. Her core belief was that gardening is more art than craft, and she borrows color principles from painters.

This is an essentially British book, filled with charming photos of bungalows surrounded by a riot of annual flowers. These old-fashioned annuals are the rangy, colorful, sweetly scented flowers that evoke nostalgia for a grandma's garden that most of us never knew, but that we can grow ourselves with the help of this book. Everything old is new again: many of the flowers here, like castor oil bean, celosia, and abutilon, have been used for decades in traditional British gardens, and they're the hot new annuals of today. Clive Lane gives detailed instructions, complete with drawings, on growing annuals from seed, explaining techniques like pricking out and stratification. What is most unusual and useful about this book are the lengthy lists of annuals for specific situations or with special characteristics; for instance, annual vines to grow for flowers, annuals for fragrance and cutting, and annuals that give at least three months of bloom. Why choose this book from among the many others on annuals? It makes gardening look like sheer, creative delight, with window boxes packed with colorful annuals, front gardens with such a fluff of annuals that it is hard to find the stepping stones, and theme gardens such as "The Edwardian Hot Bed Border." --Valerie Easton

                                            Book Description

This book is a study of the pratical application of a religious idea: the belief in the continuing validity of the Old Testament, especially the Ten Commandments, which ordained the observance of the Sabbath on the seventh day, Saturday. The author traces the growth and development of the most radical of English Sabbath observers, those who revered the Jewish Sabbath in a Christian context. But this is not only a pre-history of the Seventh-Day Adventists. It is also the story of the remarkable persistence of a revolutionary religious belief powerful and convincing enough to survive the Restoration and continue into modern times. The Saturday-Sabbath gradually became institutionalized in a nonconformist sect in which the ideological foundation was sufficient to unite men who on political grounds should have been the most bitter of enemies, including Fifth Monarchists, millenarians, neutrals, and Royalists alike. That those men and their followers could amicably join forces after the Restoration is testimony to the power of religious ideas which might overshadow the political affiliations of the civil war.

"In Sleepaway School, a boy becomes a man. The way Lee Stringer tells it, that is by itself more than enough for an enthralling story."-Kurt Vonnegut, from the foreword

"In a riveting memoir, the author of the acclaimed Grand Central Winter: Stories from the Street (1998) goes back to his 1960s troubled childhood as a foster kid growing up poor and black in a wealthy white neighborhood in upstate New York. . . . Told in more than 30 connected stories, the eloquent, present-tense narrative has the immediacy of Tobias Wolff's This Boy's Life. . . . It's an unforgettable coming of age."-Hazel Rochman, Booklist (starred review)

"Lee Stringer proves that talent travels. In Sleepaway School, he hones the sharp wit and keen perception that made Grand Central Winter so memorable to create a lyrical and deeply moving tribute to a troubled childhood. Most memoirists are well out of gas by their second book; Stringer is taking off and heading for the clouds. He is an authentic original voice."-Peter Blauner, author of The Intruder and The Last Good Day.

"The most surprising thing about Sleepaway School is that it is not grim. In fact, much of it is lighthearted and free from bitterness. Caverly's voice is appealing, and his innocence and helplessness are convincingly conveyed."-Rocky Mountain News

Lee Stringer is the author of the acclaimed Grand Central Winter: Stories from the Street, a New York Times Notable Book and USA Today Top Ten pick, which has been translated into a dozen languages. I first picked up Lee Stringer's Grand Central Winter about four years ago. I have never fallen so in love with a writer's style in only a few pages. It took me a few years to find his next book, and I just completed it about two minutes ago. While i continue to love his style of writing, i was somewhat let down by his second book. I suppose I was expecting this memoir to cover more years of his adolescence, and not so much just him at age 12 and 13. I was very much so interested in what lead him to a life on the streets of New York. However, to read about how he had lived a somewhat average life, with structure and support was an eye-opener for other people on the streets of New York.

I have just finished reading this precious book. I didn't want it to end. Mixed with sadness and unending joy, this book is beautifully written by Mr Stringer and tells the story of his transformation from angry kid to talented, and self confident man. Caverly's character is a delight, by the end of the book you cannot but love this inventive child. I highly recommend this book - it should be a set work for tenth graders across America.

What really hurt me was to hear that Stringer's other book is about his life on the streets as a homeless, crack addict. The feeling at the end of Sleepaway School was that Caverly was bound for greatness - what happened to send him on his downward spiral. I will definitely be looking out for this book in the hope that it answers my question.

...very nicely written and interesting 'coming of age' story form a different perspective. Quick reading and a positive, uplifting true story.

Probably would be good for adolescents.

An OK read, Sleepaway School by Lee Stringer is the story of young Caverly Stringer. He has an anger problem that he himself can barely make sense of and gets sent to a sleepaway school for troubled boys. That basically sums up the story. Nothing too interesting goes on, and when there seems to be something juicy right around the corner the author offers only a peek or, at times, seems too embarassed to delve into the details. To his credit, Sleepaway School is not my type of read, though I stuck with it. I would recommend it as a filler when you're in between books. All around it's a quick, easy read.

4 out of 5 stars Growing up is hard to do.......2004-06-23

SLEEPAWAY SCHOOL is a touching memoir of the formidable years of Caverly Stringer. The reader is taken on an amazing journey as this young boy becomes a young man in a world where color matters and living in poverty is part of one's existence.

Caverly's mother, who is unable to take care of a new son, puts both her children into foster care, only to return for them six years later. By this time, Caverly and his brother Wayne, have been in the foster care system long enough for the harshness to have a profound affect on the two young boys. In hopes of the family having a better life, their mother moves them into a mostly white suburb. Caverly becomes a young boy who is brimming with anger, loneliness and the inability to fit in. With fits of anger often displayed inappropriately, Caverly loses his temper after a school assembly where a classroom of performers is in black face. After his angry outburst, he is sent to Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School, a sleep away school for young boys in crisis.

The author, Lee Stringer, entertains us with stories of how he learns to live away from home in a foreign environment with structure and where he realizes how very different he is from everyone. While in this new environment, he learns much about himself and how cruel the world can be when you are black. He spends much of his time trying to belong, but the other young boys constantly pick on him. One particular incident has Caverly placed in a mental ward for observation after he threw a brick at another student. He proclaims, "I just want to be left alone." From that one statement, the reader understands precisely what he means. He wants to be able to live his life without others treating him differently. After an incident involving the use of a racial epitaph, the reader realizes Caverly is slowly starting to grow and mature because he does not react in his usual violent manner.

Although at times the story was sad, there were bursts of happiness that the reader reveled in because it becomes obvious that Caverly deserved to be able to smile and enjoy a moment of happiness. This memoir is a testament into how much young black men must overcome. The story being told by Caverly moved at a very comfortable pace and the writing style was different but very poignant. With memorable characters, this novel will make you smile at times, as well feel saddened by this young boy's plight. I enjoyed this novel for its lyrical writing style and message of hope. This is one novel that should be read by all young boys.

A memorable account of a forgotten chapter in American history

If you think that America's western expansion began on the banks of the Mississippi, think again. In West from Shenandoah, Thomas A. Lewis tells the powerful and inspiring story of America's first westerners, the fiercely independent Scotch-Irish immigrants who flocked to America in the early eighteenth century. Arriving too late to claim land along the coast, they settled in the rich and peaceful Shenandoah Valley of western Virginia and, in less than a generation, began moving west into the uncharted Appalachian wilderness, which had been ignored by the English for more than a century.

Focusing on the exploits of one remarkable family, Lewis examines the reasons for this remarkable migration, explores relations between the settlers and the Native Americans they began to displace, and reveals why the American Revolution could not have been won without the indispensable contribution of these Scotch-Irish pioneers.

                                            Praise for Thomas A. Lewis

I don't know how much professional historical training Tom Lewis has had, but, he has written one of the most interesting works of Colonial American histography that I have ever come across in "West from Shenandoah".

The beauty of "West from Shenandoah" is that it is part histography and part personal journal.

One of the most interesting aspects is early in the book when Lewis raises the possibility of genetic memory in a very deft way, so as not to come off as kookie, or trite as in the sense of deja vu.

I do have some very minor quibbles with Thomas Lewis, but, they have to do with my viewpoint as a Pennsylvania Dutchman.

For example, a few years ago, I was standing on an overlook in the Blue Ridge above the Shenandoah Valley, when I was approached by another Dutchman. This gentleman says to me, pointing down into the valley, that's my farm down there, and in my 64 years, I've never been up here before.

Lewis does characterize the "Dutch" as Lutheran, which he would have a tough time proving, because there were no Luthern churches that I know of on the Virginia frontier which would have included modern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. The "Dutch" mostly subscribed to that odd blend of Calvinism & pietism that we today know as Methodists or Presbyterians.

In the final chapter of the Journal Lewis names some folks of Scotch-Irish ancestry---I'm sure this was a little add on suggested by his publisher for the Scotch-Irish audience. It probably can't help commercial sales, but, it does detract from the histography.

I have always thought that I would love to do, what Lewis has done for the Scotch-Irish, for the Pennsylvania Dutch on the Virginia frontier. Although, there was so much early inter-marrige between the two groups that who's who today might be difficult in my opinion.
