Superb Reference.......2005-06-16
This book is an excellent field book and reference for identifying the trees of Vermont (and other northeastern states). The authors begin with a description of general characteristics to focus on for tree identification, including leaf outlines, leaf tips, leaf margins, flower parts and shapes, and twig forms. They then include a brief description and model of how to use a key, which they follow with a detailed key for identification of trees in summer. Later in the book, they also provide keys for winter identification, and identification of cut wood or lumber. There is a section of black-and-white photographic plates for identification from bark and a section of drawings from microscopic sections to aid in identification of wood. End material includes a glossary and index.
Individual articles are provided for each common tree in Vermont. The articles include the scientific name, common names, and a page of black-and-white drawings to aid in identification. Each article also provides information about habit (form), leaves, flowers, fruit, winter buds, bark, and wood. The articles close with notes, which are general comments about the tree, its uses and folklore.
The key and drawings are exceptionally clear and easy to use. By providing keys for summer, winter, and wood, the authors have made this a comprehensive reference that can be used year-round.

Customer Reviews:
Relatively Unenlightening Guidebook.......2004-11-30
Most Fodor's guidebooks are relatively good, but I found this one to be middling at best. The sparseness of maps and total absence of photographs (although they do manage to insert a color glossy advertisement for American Express) really hurts this book. New Zealand is a unique place and deserves substantially more detail than it receives here. Interestingly, Fodor's also publishes a book titled "Fodor's Exploring New Zealand" which is quite good, provides much better coverage of matters of interest, and has numerous excellent color photographs. Of the two, I would definitely opt for "Fodor's Exploring New Zealand," which is a much more user friendly and informative guidebook.
The best feature of this book is the "Smart Travel Tips" section which briefly summarizes important travel information about New Zealand travel, such as driving and flying information, money, mail, and tax laws, etc. This section is at the very beginning of the book and is really the only reason to even consider purchasing this book as the information in concise and crucial to travelers. Most of this information is available in other, better, guidebooks, though. Because of the deficiencies in other areas of this book, I recommend either "Fodor's Exploring New Zealand" or another guidebook.
Fodor's New Zealand.......2002-01-30
This book is a must have for anyone travelling to New Zealand. The places that are listed to stay are wonderful at any price. I find that this book was extremely helpful in my travel planning for my trip to New Zealand. Full of a lot of travel facts and information you need to know. It has information on everything from tandem paragliding to information on who to call for ferry service. A very good and informative book!
Sketchy information.......2001-07-10
The information in this book is sketchy, at best. I was VERY disappointed when I received the copy I ordered. I should have stuck with Frommer's for information on New Zealand.
Poor guide to New Zealand.......1999-04-23
Unlike other Fodor's guides, this one was disappointing. The George, one of the nicer small hotels in Christchurch wasn't listed, restaurant recommendations were few and disappointing and Local destination spots if they were mentioned, contained no useful information about accomodations etc. Lonely Planet New Zealand and Rough Guide New Zealand were much more informative.

Book Description
In this book Verne struck again the bolder note of imagination and creation. Here the daring explorers are represented as actually attaining the pole; and the bold inventions of what they saw and did, rising to the startling climax of the volcano and the madman's climb, are led up to through such a well-managed, well-constructed and convincing story, that many critics have selected this in its turn as the most powerful of Verne's works.
It is notable that, with the exception of the open sea and the volcano, the world which our author here penetrates in imagination, coincides closely with that which Peary has discovered to exist in reality. Here are the same barren lands, the same weary sledge journey, the same locations of land and sea, the "red snow," the open leads in the ice. Verne's predictions, wild as they sometimes seem, were all so carefully studied that they shoot most close to truth.

The Better Of The Two Volumes.......2005-03-02
This is the second of two volumes of the "Voyages and Adventures of Captain Hatteras". It was first published in magazine form between March 20th, 1864 and December 5th of 1865, and in Book form on May 4th, 1866. Together with "At The North Pole" it forms the second adventure story by Jules Verne.
This book does not stand on its own, you need to read "At The North Pole" first. This book picks up right after the cliff-hanging ending of the first book. Where the first book was fairly repetitive, this book has a much better variety of difficulties for the characters to overcome. Obviously the cold is still a significant obstacle as is food, but to these are added predatory bears, and the mutinous crew is replaced by a rivalry between Captain Hattaras and the American Captain Altamont.
For me, this book had a much better pace than the first book. The characters are not just sitting around waiting for things to happen as much as they were in the prior volume. Despite some glaring factual errors which date the book, and a somewhat anti-climactic ending, I found this to be more entertaining than "At The North Pole", and I give it the higher rating of the two volumes.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
This book is a must have.......2003-07-17
Charlie Dimmock is great. She has wonderful ideas and plans for the watergardens. I think if someone wants a lovely water feature in there yard this is the book to have....=o)
Idiot-proof water gardening.......2002-10-10
Admittedly, I am somewhat biased toward this author as I enjoy "Ground Force" more than any other home improvement show and have converted several friends from HGTV over to BBC America.
The plans and designs are honest. They clearly outline how much time it will take, the safety aspect and estimated costs (In british currency). I have noticed that her costs seem a bit low, but it may be the geographic differences. Mostly, I use this on a relativity scale. (This pond is more difficult/costly than that one)
She shows wisdom and experience in her discussion of the use of native plants and introduction of wildlife. Unfortunately, there is a bit of difference between Los Angeles and London native plants, but if you apply the general idea, you can't go wrong.
The practical ideas, like: "Don't put a fountain in a windy area" or "How to hide the pipes in a wall mounted fountain" are essential things to think about once you have it your head that you must have a water element in your yard.
My husband owns a landscape design company and he frequently uses her book to narrow down a client's broad vision. A great garden library addition for a professional or an amatuer!!
Photos and help from gardens seen on the show.......2002-07-08
Out of all the Ground Force books, we used this one the most. It helped us put in a pond in our yard complete with a vase that bubbled water over and went down a chute to the pond. The book covers many different water features including a raised tank water garden, one with waterfalls, small ones like just a vase that bubbles over, and many others. The photos are very helpful and even more enjoyable if you get to see the episode on the BBC show that the water features were on.

Book Description
or seventeen years Ichiro played the sport he loved in his home country of Japan. In 2000, he left Japan to join the Seattle Mariners. Would Ichiro be able to succeed in the world's most challenging baseball league? He did so time and again, leading his team to its best season ever in his rookie year and collecting several awards along the way. Fans on both sides of the Pacific Ocean are looking forward to his performance in the 2003 season.
Customer Reviews:
Ichiro.......2006-12-19
It is about Ichiro going to the M.L.B. and about his life as a kid, and about how the Mariners got him. It's also about him being the second player in history to win the M.V.P and the rookie the of the year in the same season. Matt Christopher is the author.
The book's name is "At the Plate with Ichiro".
My favorite part is in the book is the 2001 All-Star game when Ichiro led off and got a single in Seattle. The story takes place in Japan
and the U.S.A.
People who like baseball would like this book. The book started good. And it told us about how he was the most exciting player in Japan. I liked the book because it is about baseball. And because it is about him going to the U.S.A. I was a fun book to read.
by Jackson
The story of Ichiro's successful rookie season in 2001.......2005-05-03
Although "At the Plate with...Ichiro" ends with the Seattle Mariner's rookie season in 2001 it is still worth reading. That is because the point of Matt Christopher's book is how a player everybody said was too short, too skinny, and too weak to make it in professional baseball in the United States ended up winning both the American League Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards. Even though Ichiro continues to be a star, last year breaking George Sisler's record for most hits in a single season, the key lesson here is how he succeeded as the first Japanese-born position player in Major League Baseball.
In the first chapter Christopher sets up the context for Ichiro's accomplishments by looking at "The American Pastime in Japan." To understand what Ichiro did young readers have to know about the history of the game in Japan and Masanori Murakami, who became the first Japanese player to play professional baseball in the United States when he pitched for the San Francisco Giants in 1964-65 (I have his rookie card). But Christopher also talks about the cultural differences in how the game is played on each side of the Pacific. By the time you get to the big splash by Hideo Nomo in 1994, the struggles of Hideki Irabu, and the relative success of Kazuhiro Sasaki, you can appreciate the odds that Ichiro was facing.
It is only then that Christopher tells the story of how Ichiro was first introduced at the age of three to the game of baseball by his father and went on to become not only the greatest baseball player in Japan (lifetime batting average of .353), but also the most popular figure in the country. Christopher devotes less attention to Ichiro's actual accomplishments on the field in winning seven consecutive batting titles and three MVP awards and spends more time setting up Ichiro's decision to play in the United States. Consequently, young readers will understand why the Mariners were the only team to bid for his services and why Ichiro was ecstatic to be playing for a team on the West Coast.
Six of the book's ten chapters are devoted to the 2001 season, and I was happy to see that Christopher had the story of how Ichiro was driving Seattle manager Lou Piniella (now with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays) crazy in spring training by just hitting balls to the left side of the infield. Of course there was a method to Ichiro's madness and the story sets up the success to come. I also appreciated how Christopher would talk about Ichiro's first bunt in the Major Leagues in detail, stressing both the strategy behind and the execution of the play. One thing young baseball players will get from reading this biography is how hard work and intelligence are just as crucial as natural ability in playing the game.
The rest of the book covers that 2001 season, when Ichiro got off to a hot start, made the All-Star team, and set some records. Again, Christopher tells specific stories with key details and does not just rely on listing statistics. There are eight pages of black & white photographs of Ichiro with Seattle along with a couple of pages of statistics and records in the middle of the book. Christopher has written enough sports fiction for young readers to know how to work in lessons along with the biography in this informative and insightful book. Other baseball players that Christopher has written about in a similar fashion include Ken Griffey Jr., Derek Jeter, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Alex Rodriguez, and Curt Schilling (Position players are "At the Plate" and pitcher are "On the Mound").

Book Description
Covering the history of the last Jacobite Rising, this book tells the stories of the many women caught up in the turbulent events of 1745-46. Female support for the Stuart cause was significant, and the government of the day feared these women who gave money and hospitality or acted as spies. Some stood with their men, while others acted in direct opposition to them. Eighteen of the most prominent women were arrested after the defeat of the Rising; hundreds actively involved themselves on both sides; and many others were raped, persecuted, or transported to the colonies. With one famous exception, historians have ignored female participation in the '45 Rising. This book, based largely on original documents and letters, aims to redress the balance.

More than you thought, less than expected.......2005-04-24
While Maggie Craig's book shows that women had more influence and participation in the '45 than you may have thought, her book itself delivers less than you should expect. Written from an entirely modern perspective, Craig takes the stance that these women of Scotland were the exception rather than the norm. She seems to believe that until her generation any woman who dared express an opinion or lobby for her political ideas was ruthlessly suppressed. Nothing could be further from the truth, as women of that time were very influential in political and social action, even if they didn't always do so from the frontlines. In failing to admit this Craig does her readers an injustice even greater than that which the English Parliament came up with to defraud the House of Stuart. Craig's book relies on stories and personal observations about a 'woman's place' that contrast strongly with what scholars of the era know. Scottish Clan hierarchy valued women and children as the future, and their position in the clan 'family' was respected and greatly acknowledged. True, English law at the time was very abusive of women's rights, but those ideas had not yet taken root north of the border, despite the Act of Union. Though it presents some interesting characters and events, I found this book unconvincing.

Wonderful edition to Scottish Women's History.......2001-03-10
I found this book to be one of the great finds in recent years. Scottish women, be they common or noble, have always had a unique place in Scottish History. Unfortunately their story is often missing from the pages of Scottish history annals. Ms Criag has provided readers with a unique glimpse into the romantic period of the second Jacobite uprising from the women's point of view. The women were remarkably loyal to a man and cause doomed from the start. This is a must read if you want an historical approach that is scholarly in its content but entertaining in its delivery. This one should be in all Scottish historians' keeper shelves.
Don't Mess with the Ladies..........2001-01-04
This is a good book for the ladies of all of those kilt-wearing men who portray Jacobite soldiers in the '45 Rising. Extensive research is evident throughout. Women played a huge role in the Rising, from recruiting soldiers to gathering intelligence. This book explores the activities of some of the most fervent, yet overlooked, Jacobites: the women.
Good resource for adding depth to reenactment personae.
