Oh Well.......2007-08-06

I was expecting this book to be extremely interesting and I am so disappointed. I was reading the back of the book which says "the author creates a vivid, haunting atmosphere, which holds the reader in spell..." Whatever...it is slow paced and it's boring. I'm only half-way through with the book and the way it's going now...I don't know if I will finish it. There may be other books out there about Marie Laveau that will leave you spellbound...Please let me know..because this is not it.

Wonderful novel about a mysterious woman.......2006-06-17

Tallant's novel does a wonderful job of bringing the mysterious life of Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, into full color. Called a witch by some, and once falsely accused of murder, this story had me under its spell! Inspired by true events, the novel tells how Marie lived through plagues, wars, poverty, bigotry, family tragedy and remained strong through it all. She often helped her numerous children and friends in difficult times with tremendous energy, even into her seventies. Though feared by some, she was also remembered as a generous spirit who saw her talent as a gift from God. She never once used it for evil, but sought to bring peace and good health to her clients. This was an intriguing tale fitting for the mystique of New Orleans.

Marie Laveau was a deeply spiritual woman who, among other things, went out of her way to help and free those enslaved around her.
That doesn't stop Mr. Tallant from portraying her as a vain, selfish con-woman.
To make matters worse, he doesn't even write his slander well. This is not only a bigoted portrayal of a powerful, faith-driven woman, but it is also a boring read.
Avoid this trash.

I was given a First Edition of this book by a friend who knows that I practice Vodou and Rootwork. It is a fascinating story, but sadly the author focuses on "wild orgies" and "blood drinking negros". It was written in the 30s and does indeed reflect the "taste" of this period as well as the prejudice attitude towards Voodoo and Vodou in that time.

The Best Book on New Orleans and Laveau.......2003-08-16

This book is absolutely the most interesting and fascinating story I have ever read concerning the subjects of New Orleans History and Marie Laveau. Tallant is the genius of taking the facts that have been gathered on both subjects and combining them into a novel that you cannot and will not put down. It is a page turner from start to finish. I am currently reading the book for the third time, and I am not a big reader. It is THAT GOOD. If you love the call and the mystery of this river city, you will be spell bound! AAA+++

Already own all 13 of Rechy's books? ... Got a copy of *Numbers* from a friend once, but never read anything else? ... Only know *City of Night* because it's on that list of "modern classics" you should have read? ... Well, no matter what your level of exposure to Rechy's brilliance, if he's an author you long to learn more about, this CD-ROM can help. Filled with fascinating images from his personal archives, it also contains multimedia pieces which dramatize and synthesize the themes of Memories, Bodies, and Cruising. One feature sure to please Rechy fans who haven't had the chance to meet him, is the use of the author's voice for narrative pieces and book excerpts.

Nonetheless, if you're looking for a definitive bibliography, or expecting a project resembling a flashy "book report" on Rechy, this CD-ROM is not the place to start. (For that sort of treatment, go to the library and/or search the Web). This CD-ROM will not familiarize you with all his writings, or give you biographical trivia, in the traditional sense -- but it does illuminate the style and substance of his work, and reveal aspects of his life, in new ways.

As to the CD-ROM itself: I would have preferred more detailed installation and navigation instructions -- but didn't have any great difficulty getting the various components up and running. Overall content seemed rather sparse once I started exploring it, and I kept wanting more detail and depth -- but that's to be expected. After all, there's only so much space on any CD-ROM, and no amount could be "enough" or "too much" when reveling in the beauty, passion, and glory of a work.

As many times as I have explored this amazing multimedia CD-ROM, I constantly find something new to appreciate. A photograph in a collage that links to an artifact with the voice of John Rechy revealing new meaning...a path through a thicket of trees that reveals the author standing shirtless above his beloved city.... Mysteries and Desire is a masterful, extraordinary work whose technique rises to the level of its subject. Anyone interested in John Rechy, literature, digital content or new media should not miss this experience.

MOST BOOKS THAT I FOUND THOUGHOUT THE BOOKSTORES ARE BRIEF AND BASICALLY COVERS THE FROSTING ON A CAKE. I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE VERY DETAILED AND TO THE POINT. IT CONTAINED INFORMATION THAT WAS UNAVAILABLE ELSEWHERE. IT IS HANDY AND I WILL USE IT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.

This is a wonderful book packed with over 50 full-color paintings of many orchid varieties. By examining the orchids closely you get to see their true beauty. This is a great reference tool for any orchid lover or botany student. The book starts out with a history of the artist himself. Then the structure & function of each class of orchid is examined. Detailed black & white paintings accompany this discussion. The orchid painting themselves are spectacular. Each section is shown in vivid detail. The Latin & common names as well as the orchid's distribution, history & a written description are located adjacent to the paintings. Some of my favorite paintings include the lady slipper, king orchid, golden donkey, & marsh helleborine. I intend to purchase another copy of the book, so I can cut out the artwork & frame it for decoration.

This is the first study of the particularly interesting network of quarries and roads in southern Euboea. The quarries were a major source of Cippolino marble in Roman times. The study presents a survey and examination of the quarries and roads serving them and analyses of samples of marble collected there. The inaccessibility of the quarries has meant that they and the road systems around them have been unusually well preserved, but also that existing literature on the area is scanty and far from accurate. The material discussed here is of great historical, economic and technological significance. Freak was a one-man show in San Francisco and off-Broadway, then moved to
Broadway, gathering Tony nominations. In October 1998 it was an HBO special. For most performers, comedians, it would be just another stand-up concert, a type of program common to HBO. But this is Leguizamo's "Semi-Demi-Quasi-Pseudo Autobiography" and he brings to it such intensity, such a variety of personalities -- as he remembers his family and friends -- that it transcends this description and becomes like, well, a Broadway play.

John Leguizamo has had a remarkably varied career. Fans of the Spawn movie will recall his huge, even monstrous role there. His character and costume was very different in the oddly titled move To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. He probably reached one of his largest audiences early in his career in the usually pasteurized television mass market, briefly enlivened, energized and diversified by his "Latino variety show" "House of Buggin'."

This is a book based on the one man show and HBO special, edited to be
read, so it of course differs from the performances, which would include some ad lib. One might have expected to save the experience of this show with a tape, or a spoken-word recording, but this paperback is an inexpensive, permanent way to revisit and savor Leguizamo's work again and again, at your pleasure and convenience.

Why is the show not out on DVD?.......2006-11-10

"Freak" is a fantastic piece of writing and an amazing performance by its writer, in his HBO one-man show. What I don't understand is why HBO wouldn't put it out on DVD. They've done it with Chris Rock's shows... If you can get your hands on a tape, watch it. It's funny and heartbreaking.

At turns morose and gross, and gutbusting and bitingly real, you will transported by a family, though superficially unlike your own, eventually begins to resemble your childhood memories.

Not a bad book, it's pretty much a bunch of war stories told by a guy who was on the front line of the DEA's war on drugs. Don't expect to hear anything earthshattering from this book, although the amount of drugs confiscated is impressive for the 70's and 80's, it's not really mind boggling for 2005. Go to the library and borrow this book if it's your cup of tea.

This book is an incredibly captivating read. It's kind of funny because I don't think I've ever read a book with more typo's. They're seriously all over the place. But the author's stories are so intense I somehow stopped caring. He really has a way of writing that makes you feel like you were there. I would reccomend this book to anyone looking for a fast, motivating read.

If you enjoy books that suck you in and you find hard to put down. Then you will want to read this book. Davidson's style is clean and direct with a very unique sense of humor that makes you feel like you really know him. I have enjoyed this book and will read it again.

Having been in Detroit when harold came on the job, I found the book to be factual, informative , and showed his unique sense of humor. All in all, a good book on the subject.

Mr. Davidson's style is direct and uncomplicated, possibly the result of of submitting reports for many years. The only addition to his 'report' style since his retirement is the injection of welcome humor. From the perspective of one who was (briefly) in the same field of endeavor it is obvious that Mr. Davidson knows the subject, did what he said, and doesn't shrink from rowing against the tide by identifying judges with questionable motives, lawyers who should be sentenced with their clients, some informants who can be more honorable than our system of justice, and bureaucrats more concerned about being criticized than they are with getting the job done as well as their agents in the field. This book is refreshing as hell so put me down for a copy if there's a sequel.
