Book Description
Introduce children to the magic of using herbs for healing, cooking, and nature crafts and inspire a lifelong interest in the natural world.
⢠Designed especially for children ages five to ten.
⢠A hands-on book for children, filled with fun, easy-to-follow activities.
Walking the World in Wonder covers the medicinal and magical uses of sixty-seven common herbs. Each herb playfully introduces itself and talks about its habitat and many uses. With fun, easy-to-follow activities, herbalist Ellen Evert Hopman teaches children basic herbal skills and invites them to make a sunflower seed mosaic, sew a catnip-filled mouse, and dig for Jerusalem artichoke roots. The book also includes simple recipes that children can use, with adult supervision, to treat minor ailments--peppermint tea to soothe a troubled tummy or horse chestnut salve to heal a scraped knee. Children gain a sense of self-sufficiency and awe for the earth's treasures by eating wild nettle greens, sprinkling a sandwich with nasturtium flowers, making strawberry honey, and learning to season food with dill they've gathered themselves. Parents and teachers will appreciate how these earth-centered activities are placed within a broader social and environmental context. Sixty-seven full-color photographs enable children, parents, and teachers to identify these herbs during walks and field trips. Walking the World in Wonder gives children a direct and joyous experience of their connection to the natural world and inspires a lifelong interest in their own health and that of the planet.

Lovely.......2007-08-14
I really love this book. It has real photos of the plants making them easy to identify. Gives a nice amount of informations and something you can do with each plant. Plus which season to find the plant in!

A Must Have Book!.......2004-06-10
This is definitely a must have book for any family who does herbal medicine- Pagan or not! I was so excited to see the Wheel of the Year described. Each description is in very easy to read language for the children, yet offers valuable information. Plainly put, the author trusts the children's intelligence, and doesn't dumb it down for them. Many simple recipes for remedies and treats are included in the descriptions, as well as lore. My only problem with this book is that there aren't more pictures of each plant in various stages. Some of the pictures offer only a flowering shot of the arial parts. Still, with a parent's help the children will have no problem seeing that they are indeed the plants from the book. The pictures offered are full page beautiful shots. So, it's not really much of a complaint- more of a suggestion in case there are any future editions. :) BUY THIS BOOK!
Perfect First Herbal for a Child.......2003-10-29
The author begins with some good information on practices of collecting, use and identification, and then proceeds with a nice introduction to the Wheel of the Year complete with the popular festival names (Samhain, Yule, etc.)
My kids (boys, ages 5 and 8) love the full-color illustrations of easy-to-find herbs. This is truly written to be used by a child (though adults will find it enchanting as well) which is exactly what I needed. I have plenty of my own adult versions of herbals and wanted something that my children could call their own and use on their own.
An interesting twist is the organization of the herbs. The herbs are grouped into four seasons, the season they would most commonly be found, and the chapters begin with Autumn, the start of the Wheel of the Year. Living in Florida, we are less likely to be finding that exactly useful; but we do enjoy seeing how they are usually found in the more northern areas of the nation and will enjoy that feature on our travels to visit family.
Medicinal and magical uses of over sixty common herbs.......2001-05-28
Kids ages 5-10 and their parents will find Walking The World In Wonder an inviting survey of the medicinal and magical uses of over sixty common herbs. Each herb introduces itself and talks about its uses, with activities reinforcing the lessons on basic herbal skills, along with simple recipes kids can use.
Another bit of Magick from Ellen Evert Hopman!.......2000-10-27
This book is a delight for children of ALL age! For those just exploring the magical world of nature to those young at heart. The beautiful photography and illustrations along with the wondrous style of writing is enchanting. This is a marvelous addition to any library, full of information from the practical and medicinal uses of herbs to a beautiful introduction to the wheel of the year and cycles of nature, with glimpses into ancient folklore of various cultures.

Amazing...but True.......2005-03-26
I have had this book for many years. It is a wonderful book for all elementary school students. The book answers common questions that children may have about plants. For example, how does a pit get in the peach, how can a catus live with so little water, and many more. If you are a teacher or a parent and would like to share with your child(ren) or student(s) fun and interesting facts about plants, this book is a great and fun start.

Customer Reviews:
A Confidence Builder.......2000-07-26
A recent resident of Venice, California, I looked out to the Santa Monica mountains from my second story window and wondered where the running trails were. I've bounced around LA over the past few years, running in Griffith Park, Fryman Canyon, Porter Ranch, among other routes, but these new mountains drew me to them.
How to find my way? I ran one morning at Will Rogers Park and asked someone about the trails that lured me away from the traffic and the people. The runner said: "Get Stan Swartz' book!" Thus armed, I searched a book store and found it quickly. It was exactly what I was searching for, similar in style to the wonderful book I had purchased years earlier which depicted all the trail running possibilities within New York City.
Now, eight weeks after placing third in my ritualistic 10K at Descanso Gardens, I leaf through the book almost every morning, wondering which route I will take on the weekend, building up my confidence with each page turn. What I find fascinating is that the descriptions of the routes, the distances, and benchmarks, the terrain, ALL MATCH THE REALITY. I know I am on the right trail; I know when I am half way through; I know when to turn left or right; the topographical maps give me an idea of the ups and downs. Now that I have completed several of the runs alone among this spectacular landscape, I inhale the spiritual aspect of running imbued by George Sheehan and combine it with the practical information provided by this book.
I look forward to trying out as many of the runs as I can, venturing out even to the longest ones at 13 miles. When I can, I will join the other runners on Sunday mornings. The three authors have given me a great gift: the ability to explore historical terrain with the eyes of a contemporary "critter"...a trail runner who feels at one with the wondrous varieties of Nature described so completely by those who have gone before me. Thank you.
Thorough, entertaining, informative.......2000-05-04
This book has excellent information for the novice or seasoned trail runner. With it's topography of the trails, the newest runner can pick a trail that is not too difficult. Beautiful photographs.

Book Description
Comprehensive price guide listed by both artist and by strip. This informative, well-illustrated book by an expert in the field covers cartoon art collecting in two parts. In the first, the author gives a brief history and discussion of the creative process behind the form; in the second, he offers practical tips on collecting and caring for a collection. An appendix lists useful resources for both novices and experienced collectors.
Customer Reviews:
A dependable and substantial reference and value guide........2000-03-04
Collecting Original Comic Strip Art! offers the collector and dealer a detailed historical account of the development and role of comic strip art as a cultural icon and as an authentic American art form. Author Jeffrey Ellinport provides a description of the creative process, terminology, and methods used in comic strip art production; tips for starting, building, and protecting a collection of this ephemeral and delicate art work; an up-to-date price guide organized by artist and by comic strip; recommended readings and detailed listings of permanent comic strip art exhibits, websites, and syndicates. Anyone wanting to explore this fascinating area of memorabilia collecting must begin by carefully reading Collecting Original Comic Strip Art!, the first dependable and substantial reference and value guide dedicated specifically to illustrated comic strip story panels and artwork.
A great resource for the serious Strip Art Collector.......2000-01-22
As a newer collector I needed some help in learning about approximate values of hard to find "off beat" Strips. This book helped me with that and more! Besides values, the author does a fine job on discussing various aspects of the field that will help any type of collector. I most highly recommend this book.
Good Intentions Do Not a Classic Make.......1999-09-17
Upon entering the field of Collecting Original Art, too many issues are not immediately obvious and the author does not appear to this decade-tenured collector to be well versed in the subtler issues and the titles and illustrations shown from the authors collection bear this out. The overview is well reasoned, however, and appear well meant, but do not address the great classic strips, the education and research that goes into World Class Collecting, and the examples (many of the finer and classic strip titles of which I've owned and which came to both Russ Cochran or Illustration House through my resources) examples of Originals are not up to par with the finest the field has to offer, by any standard. That written, and outside of the pricing section, which truly begs complaint, the book is on balance a starting point for start up collectors, and does stress, within its limits, the issues of specuation and having a true collecting spirit. Good start, but needs serious revision in future editions
Great for novices and collectors alike........1999-05-27
While this book is obviously geared for the serious collector, it has a lot of very intersting tid-bits, strips, and other information for the Sunday newspaper reader who is casually interested in the Comics.
An excellent book for comic strip collector........1999-04-21
I found this book to be well written and extremely informative. To a collector as myself, the book is an invaluable research tool that I use when deciding on which pieces to purchase for my collection.

Savonarola- prophet or political manipulator?.......2004-12-21
part of a study to present to adult education class on missions at my church.
I'm obligated to give a short class on Savonarola and this is part of that study
I got the book more for it's accessibility then any other reason. It is the first full length book treatment of his life that i have read and therefore have precious little to compare it to factually. Two big problems stare out from the book. The first is that the author's bias seems to get in the way of good presentation. She appears to be interested in him primarily as a political character and has very little sympathy for the theological content of his life. The second is that the first 2/3 of the book are more detailed then they need to be and the last 1/3 (from the trial by fire) far less informative than the events warrant. It is like the 20-25 page papers i wrote in university. I'd often get to page 19 and logically be 1/2 done the paper, rather than redo the first 19 pages, i'd just move faster so i'd get just 25 pages. In the case of this book, i'd love to see the first 2/3 cut down into the first 1/2 and the last 1/3 expanded to the last half. It is really noticable and leaves an unpleasantness in my mind for the details of his last 6 months are those most appropriate to what he really believed and why. But almost none of this discussion is present: meaning, significance, etc haunt the first 2/3 and are virtually absent in the last portion.
Now about content. Who was Savonarola and why do so many people seem to desire to claim him as an antecedent?
First, he appears with Hus and Wycliffe in the Luther monument in Worms (pictures in the book). but he was not a crypto or early Protestant, he is throughly Roman.
Second, he is certainly apocalyptic, but did the success of his early sermons on these topics create him or did he create a market for these sermons through his preaching? Simply, what was the relationship of the times to Savonarlo? Left unanswered, even mildly unasked.
Third, just because he died a martyr's death, does these change the truthfulness of his preaching, either by adding to it or subtracting from it since it means he personally lost the battle? Lots of people die at the hands of people we believe ought to know better, but does the manner of one's death like this, have anything to do with the values of his life or is it something that really effects only how we think about that person's life? Luther didn't die on his way back from Worms, that gave him a successfulness denied to Hus, Wycliffe and Savonarola and many others of their ages, so what?
Lastly, he was a moral reformer, not a doctrinal one, who tried to use the political apparatus with a few new pieces (boys groups to collect the vanities) that look remarkably modern. This intertwining of the religious and the political make it hard to distinguish things that i would like to know about both him and his times. But i will have to look elsewhere for all those answers.
The man-the messenger, the message both content and technique of presentation(the media) and the audience. Florence looks a lot like modern western culture, it certainly was the up and coming Renaissance city. For this reason we find lots of parallels between them and us, i think this is the enduring legacy of those times. The bonfire of the vanities looks like something our materialistic, obsessed with beauty society ought to do to rid itself of superficial banalities. But it is the technique of his overall campaign that we find most interesting. The political involvement, the intertwining of religion and politics, the underlying economic causes: plague, failure of harvests, rapidly changing conditions that favor some and crush others. It is this semi-marxist (economic forces are primary and underlie everything else) that the author manages to transmit to us as a take home message. His theology and beliefs look like nothing more than a psychologized superstructure when compared to the reality of partisan power politics based on control of economic forces. This ends up telling us more about our time than Savonarola's, about our deepest ideals then about Savonarola's or his times, thus yielding a book that really doesn't illuminate him but plays at history telling.
I could have spent those few hours more profitably with another book, i haven't found it yet, but for a start it is ok background. But leaves me with far more questions than content to answer them with.
Page turner.......2004-03-03
This book was a real page turner for me. Whether or not a college history professor thinks it's a good history book, it is a fascinating read. I'm grateful to the Amazon organization for the ease in which I was able to obtain a copy through their third party service.
The author's account of tensions between the different social forces in Florence during that time cut through the centuries so it reads like it could've been happening here and now. It is the "uncritical" writing, not bogged down with the analysis of an uptight academic, that makes this book easy and fascinating to read. Leave the critical analysis to the experts...
