Long Distance Walking in Norway.......2006-10-08

"Walking in Norway" is a compact guide to long distance hiking in the mountains and high plateaus of Norway. Norway is blessed with some exceptionally beautiful national parks featuring mountains, lakes, and huge open areas above treeline. Connie Roos has provided planning information to take advantage of 20 selected routes located in the Hardanger, Jotunheimen, Rondane, Dovre, Trollheimen, and northern Norway regions. Her focus is on multi-day hikes, although hikers may choose to do only segments of the routes described. Her information includes a sketch map for each area, terrain profile, and narrative description of the distance and conditions of each major path segment. There is also a small selection of photographs that provide some sense of scale. Roos has provided some valuable information on how to reach the various hiking regions, whether by car, bus, or train, and on how the distinctive Norwegian mountain hut system works.

Hikers should pay close attention to Roos' comments on clothing. The Norwegian mountain regions are subject to highly variable weather conditions. The isolation of many of these areas means hikers will be thrown on their resources in the event of bad weather.

Hikers should also expect to invest in maps of the areas where they plan to hike. The sketch maps in the book are not sufficiently detailed for routefinding.

This book is highly recommended to the dedicated hiker looking for opportunities in the still mostly wild interior of Norway.

Thorough.......2003-03-03

This book was aimed for a largely British audience. It gives extremely thorough descriptions of the long route from Oslo to Trondheim, as well as fair and forthright critiques of the state of lodgings & etc. along the way. I have yet to take the journey myself, so can't comment on how reliable it is as an actual guide, but the historical information, resources and advice seem like the perfect starting point should one want to do the route.

A key book on Gorky.......2006-12-01

I love this catalogue . I look at it all of the time. For a small book this book packs a wallop as, this volume was selected for some of Gorky's best drawings.I have the retrospective of Gorky's drawings published by the Whitney Museun. Large books like it are good for the cocktail table for some . I don't allow any of my books out for company. People put drinks on top of art books. This book did it for me it cements Arshile Gorky's reputation as a great draftsman.Over the years this book has increased in value to me.. Almost any book on Gorky will become more valuable . Years ago ,Mooridian(his nephew) released Gorky's drawings for exhibit at the Evanston Art Center and some were stolen. Visiting the library I found many of the tipped in plates in Gorky books were removed.This demonstrates the magical hold Gorky has on others.

This Book Might Change Your Thinking on Garden Design.......2004-09-16

The leaf itself is not only worthy of consideration, it should be the determining factor, says this author. A plant doesn't earn its keep unless it has an interesting leaf that contributes to the esthetics of the garden. This is a different way of looking at garden planning, as most people choose plants based on their flower.

I used the book this spring when I redesigned my front herb and flower gardens, a task which was prompted by tree growth that had turned a formerly sunny garden into a shade garden. I learned that by "considering the leaf," I could have my flowers early in the season while the tree leaves were unfurling. Peonies, daylilies, ferns and hostas, arranged with respect to their leaf shape, gave me foliage and flowers throughout the summer. Furthermore, when arranged by leaf shape and color, I found I had an attractive display even when there were no blooms going on.

I found that design using this principle resulted in more color than what I would have otherwise. There are several sections of color plates to illustrate the different approaches and I am excited about using some of these ideas next year.

Foreign correspondent Neely Tucker and his wife, Vita, arrived in Zimbabwe in 1997. One afternoon, a critically ill infant was brought to the orphanage from a village outside the city. She'd been left to die in a field on the day she was born, abandoned in the tall brown grass that covers the highlands of Zimbabwe in the dry season. After a near-death hospital stay, and under strict doctor's orders, the ailing child was entrusted to the care of Tucker and Vita. Within weeks Chipo, the girl-child whose name means gift, would come to mean everything to them.

Still an active correspondent, Tucker crisscrossed the continent, filing stories about the uprisings in the Congo, the civil war in Sierra Leone, and the postgenocidal conflict in Rwanda. He witnessed heartbreaking scenes of devastation and violence, steeling him further to take a personal role in helping anywhere he could. At home in Harare, Vita was nursing Chipo back to health. Soon she and Tucker decided to alter their lives forever -- they would adopt Chipo. That decision challenged an unspoken social norm -- that foreigners should never adopt Zimbabwean children.

Raised in rural Mississippi in the sixties and seventies, Tucker was familiar with the mores associated with and dictated by race. His wife, a savvy black woman whose father escaped the Jim Crow South for a new life in the industrial North, would not be deterred in her resolve to welcome Chipo into their loving family.

As if their situation wasn't tenuous enough, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was stirring up national fervor against foreigners, especially journalists, abroad and at home. At its peak, his antagonizing branded all foreign journalists personae non grata. For Tucker, the only full-time American correspondent in Zimbabwe, the declaration was a direct threat to his life and his wife's safety, and an ultimatum to their decision to adopt the child who had already become their only daughter.

Against a background of war, terrorism, disease, and unbearable uncertainty about the future, Chipo's story emerges as an inspiring testament to the miracles that love -- and dogged determination -- can sometimes achieve. Fabulous from the start. So much intermingles in this book - history, politics, personal struggle, life in Africa, bi-racial familes, adoption - that to narrow it down to a memoir wouldn't be doing it justice.
Following the writer as he pushes you through each page, you find yourself involved in the world through the eyes of this family. It's one of those books that you rush to get through and then you regret what you've done once you see there's only a few pages left.
When I find an author of this caliber, I stick with them. And Neely Tucker sure can write.

This memoir goes to show on how faith and love can conquer all odds. It has opened my eyes on the issue of AIDS and the politically unstable country of Zimbawiae. A very touching love story of father and daughter.

In dealing with their personal frustrations, the author shows us the hurdles and challenges of wanting to help in nations that need it the most. It is a good read, heartwarming. But unlike most books, it left me in search of an organization that can break through and really offer help to children touched by AIDS.

"By noon, the ants had found the girl-child."

From the first paragraph, this book had us hooked. Not only is it a great story, but very well written. My wife and I are in a similar situation, living in Africa and trying to adopt a child we've had for years, and the book seems pretty realistic to us. Of note, the author is neither cynical nor romantic about his family's experiences, and gives us a very good picture of the struggles of his heart as well as the external struggle for adoption.

This is a beautiful story of love and charity.
