The description of this nice little book seemed as if it included more flower pictures and info than it actually has. It's fine for the price but not as extensive a resource as I really wanted.

Too much Practicality, not enough Cultural Steepage.......2002-03-01
This book just didn't do it for me. At least it didn't do what I was looking for it to do. And at the price [I paid] in the bookstore I bought it in, in Saudi Arabia, it ended up being...more than I would have been willing to pay for it.
I was hoping to get some insight into each and every Arabian peninsula country, learn something in-depth about the culture, maybe get a lay of the land, with a couple of in-depth descriptions of the sights, food, and sounds of those countries. Basically what any good travel book should do. With James Peters, "The Arab World Handbook" these things are only scratched at on the surface. It is more of a practical every day life, how to conduct business in the Arab world sort of book, instead of a cultural insight or travel discovery sort of book. It does give you a fair dose of the language and etiquette with a whole chapter devoted to advice for the business traveler. If you are heading to the Middle East to work, I would recommend this book. If you are going there to travel or want to learn extensively about life there, go elsewhere.
The book is probably due for an update as sadly and ironically within the last section for US support organizations Export assistance lists the New York organization at 6 World Trade Center. It's a complicated place, the Middle East; complicated to the Western traveler at least...it will take a more in-depth book than this to allow you to get a good feel for that complication.

I finally obtained a copy of this book!.......2006-08-15
I was lucky enough to finally purchase this book from an Amazon seller. I have wanted this book for quite some time. This book appears to be the sole resource for Consolidated Glass. There are about twenty color pages or so that are just fantastic. Nowhere else will you see such a collection of Ruba Rhombic, for example. The rest of the book is in black and white and contains many reproductions of ads, etc. that were done in the 30's to promote this glass. Some of those are great....others are very poor in visual quality, which detracts from the rest of the book. Thus, I am giving a four star rating instead of five. In any case, I do recommend this book highly if you can get your hands on one without paying a fortune. The colored pages section alone is worth the purchase.

This is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in true gardening. The photos are lovely! So many of the plants are used in herbal medicine (read of their history within the pages of this charming book) or are flowers your grandmother had in her garden by the back door.
Katherine has such a terrific knowledge of plants that, without being at all stuffy she can let you know where and how to use them. It's not a dry read at all. Get this book and you won't be disappointed.

This book was wonderful from start to finish. Mr. Genders gives the history of cottage gardening, and how the various flowers came to be included. He then names all the varieties. What a great source for those looking for antique flowers and herbs to include in our gardens! I highly recommend reading this book!

So, I am a fan of crazy-gorgeous-extreme model types, because they are so much the opposite of me.
Take Janice Dickinson, for instance. Janice walks in a room, and everyone knows it. Maybe they smell her heady melange of booze, perfume, and cigarettes. It could be the obnoxiously loud string of foulness that always enters before she does. And perhaps it's because she's gorgeous and has those crazy -- as in substantially unstable -- eyes that demand attention in a Charlie Manson kind of way. I don't know. Whatever it is, I want it, as do millions of young ladies.
So I really wanted to like this book and experience a lot of "Oh no she di'int" admiration, but mostly, I was stumbling over the lackluster, disconnected writing. Does anyone believe celebrities of her caliber -- low, that is -- really write their own material? I suppose her "writing partner" is partially to blame for the poor quality, but having seen Dickinson in action (critiquing ANTM contestants and manipulating her way through the D-list dumpster that is The Surreal Life), I don't doubt for a second that she'd have creative control and final say on the content and style.
Janice does deliver some juicy bits. For example, way back when Sly Stallone was her man, Janice was regularly given mystery "vitamins" by the Rocky that, in light of recent events, may've been an early iteration of HGH. Hm. Plus there's tons of drugs and boyfriends (and girlfriends), although I could've done without the explicit descriptions of sex ham-fistedly sandwiched into random spots. (It's like she forgot she wasn't writing a Harlequin for a couple of pages.)
As in other memoirs by people who shouldn't necessarily be writing any, there's the usual childhood drama blown out of proportion. Being abused is drama enough -- why add the Lifetime Movie of the Week sentiment for fanfare? It feels a little... exploitative.
But I suppose that's the point. Dickinson made her career out of exploitation -- of her body, the camera, other people's bodies... you name it. I appreciate the candor she shows, and no-holds-barred "outing" of celeb secrets is balanced by kind words for others (for instance, Christie Brinkley is -- or at least was -- a saint). This could've been an excellent book if only she'd taken an intensive in English composition and pulled out a thesaurus. (At least it wasn't as bad as Iceberg Slim!)

This woman has balls. It is not a book written by someone who is afraid of looking bad, or offending people (I am looking at YOU Kimora Lee Simmons). Janice is one fierce b*tch. I must say she did start to get on my nerves after viewing her reality show, but if you are looking for a juicy book, get this one. You will be satisfied!

Are you from America? Do you think that the Backstreet Boys aren't really a boy band but a vocal group? Well, here's a new vocal group from Ireland worth knowing about. Here's the 411 on them: They can all sing, for real. They are definitely cute. BSB is one of their bigget musical inspirations, and their songs definitely show it. Although they only released 1 album in the US, the lads are soon coming here to conquer America. If you're a fan who wants to know more upclose and personal stuff regarding Mark, Nicky, Bryan, Shane, and/or Kian, this is a nice collector's item to have with fabulous pics of the guys.
