Nicely detailed cruising guide.......2007-06-05
I would rate this book as a "must-have" for anyone cruising the Tennessee River. We've also used it to help transit the TennTom Waterway from the Tennessee River down to Mobile, and it was quite helpful there as well, although somewhat dated. When the TennTom portion of the book was written the waterway was quite new, and with the passage of 10-15 years some of the recommended anchorages have shoaled and become unusable for boats of anything but very shallow draft. Still, this guide helped us find more than one excellent anchorage that we likely would have missed otherwise.

I just finished the trip.......2007-08-14
I found this to be a very helpful and informative guidebook. As I traveled from Louisville, Ky to Mobile I refered to the book numerous times even though I had read it through before starting the trip. With the guidebook and a set of charts I had no trouble for the whole trip even though I had no experience boating.
Book Description
Authors Efraim Karsh and Inari Rautsi, experts on Middle East history and politics, have combined their expertise to write what is largely considered the definitive work of one of the world's most reviled and notorious figures. Drawing on a wealth of Iraqi, Arab, Western and Israeli sources, including interviews with people who have had close contact with Saddam Hussein throughout his career, the authors trace the meteoric transformation of an ardent nationalist and obscure Ba'th party member into an absolute dictator. Skillfully interweaving a realistic analysis of Gulf politics and history, and now including a new introduction and epilogue, this authoritative biography is essential for understanding the mind of a modern tyrant.

A Standard Text That is Immune from Present-Day Biases.......2007-02-06
I recently began to read this book because it was published in 1991 (following the Persian Gulf War) and thus long predates the current (2007) catastrophe in Iraq, with all the attendant biases arising out of the American invasion and occupation. I am simply a lay reader with a desire to know more about the modern political development of Saddam and Iraq and am not qualified to evaluate this book. HOWEVER, as a reality check I looked at a couple of objective sources to help me make a judgment about whether the book is worth reading. The answer is unquestionably yes.
First, if you check on Amazon.com (or the Library of Congress catalogue at loc.gov) for other books by the principal author, Efraim Karsh, you will see that he has published a large number of academic monographs on many aspects of Middle East politics, both before and after this book was written. The most recent of these was published in 2006 by Yale University Press, and there are many others spanning three decades. He was teaching at King's College, University of London, when he wrote this Saddam biography in the early 1990s and is still there, now as Professor and Head of the Mediterranean Studies program at King's.
Second, I looked at one university on-line catalogue, in this case Princeton University because of its strength in Political Science and International Relations, to see whether they long ago sent this book to off-campus storage (or worse) or still consider it relevant. At Princeton there are SIX copies of this book currently on reserve in the main university library. This suggests that Princeton professors and librarians still consider the book to be of great value for students of the Middle East and the current Iraq crisis.
I have therefore given this book five stars not because I feel qualified to evaluate it but because it has received alot of criticism from other readers who say a variety of negative things about the authors and the book. Given the principal author's outstanding record of publication, and the fact that he holds the senior professorship in Mediterranean Studies at one of Britain's finest universities, I think that the book at least merits serious consideration for those trying to get an understanding of what Saddam and Iraqi politics were like before the United States invasion.
Dull.......2006-03-23
This novel was not bias as other have said but it was very difficult to understand. It is incredibly all-over-the-place in terms of information. Information about a particular event may be scattered throughout the novel, making it difficult to truly understand an event that occured in the book. I had to do a novel study on this particular book and I found it frustrating because it was contradictory. This novel gives you the straight facts and nothing else.
Same old biased and unneccessary demonization.......2005-05-04
I gave this book a try because I at least thought that even though this book is a negative portrayal of Saddam Hussein, I did not think that the authors would be so biased.
This book is just the same old redundant hodgepodge of 'evil Saddam' mania that has been sweeping the US since the early 1990s. While many of Saddam Hussein's acts were ruthless and he certainly did abuse his authority, he DID do some good for Iraq, as strange as it may seem. If anyone here is looking for a fair and balanced book about Saddam Hussein, I highly reccommend 'Saddam Hussein-Politics of Revenge' by Said K. Aburish. The author himself worked for Saddam's regime until he quit because of his objections to Hussein's policies. If you want to read a good book about Saddam, don't waste your time with Saddam Hussein: A Political biography.
not as bad as others made it out to be.......2005-02-11
Having nearly finished this book, I have to say that while the book is not perfect and certainly not the best book on Iraqi politics out there, I found it to be informative and easy to read. Maybe because I've had to read so many books for school that are largely theoretical and unreadable, this book doesn't seem as bad to me as it would to others.
The subject matter is pretty straightforward. The book covers Hussein's political life up until the end of the first Gulf War in 1990. The authors do allow personal opinion to pop up from time to time, but compared to some of the other books on Iraq out there right now, I don't find it to be particularly troublesome in this instance.
If you have only a passing interest in Iraq, this book probably isn't for you. I think that people with an active interest in Iraq or the Middle East should read the book along with many others.
Totally Biased.......2004-05-01
When i first picked up this book, i thought that it would get me to understand Saddam Hussein better, better even without knowing him that well, i knew that this book is biased from the way it described him. I'm not a big fan of him and i think that he got what he deserves, but i know that from what he did in Iraq he deserves more credit for the way Iraq was in the late 80's. i would not recommend this book.

An excellent political biography for young readers........2000-05-09
By 1990 Hussein had ruled Iraq for ten years and was leading forces to invade Kuwait, bringing popular attention to his regime. This surveys his life and times, examining his rise to power, the course of Arab politics during his lifetime, and his meaning to the Iraqis people. Over a hundred pages of detail will educate readers in grades 5-7.

A helpful, humorous book for new kitten owners........1999-02-20
My boyfriend and I recently fostered 7 orphaned 3 week old kittens. This book was invaluable! It talked about what to expect every week of the kittens life. When they were supposed to open their eyes, when they would start to play, what was normal and what needed attention. Also discusses their cognitive development. It was so clearly written and enjoyable, even humorous, that my boyfriend read it cover to cover and he's not a reader.
Book Description
A complete care guide for orphan kittens, including information on determining their ages, how to handle all basic care needs, and the supplies and materials needed. It also has in-depth information on normal growth stages, handling routine health problems, and how to determine what additional outside help might be needed. It even includes information on how and where to get additional, hands-on assistance in raising the kittens and suggestions on how to get them into good adoptive homes.
Customer Reviews:
from a fellow foster kittie mom.......2006-04-18
I have now raised four litters of kittens from a week old to adoption. I can say that in many ways it is harder than raising my twin boys. You don't have the resources for kittens as with kids and they need three times the feeding and stimulation care that kids do!!! Now with this book I have the life line I need to take on another litter. Fostering kittens can be the most heartbreaking and wonderful job at the same time and with this book I will hopefully eliminate the "scary" parts associated with it. Sharon's book is like having a veterinarian at home with me at all times. I am telling everyone I know about this book. It is a must for raising kittens for your home or to adopt out.
Thank you Sharon for sharing your expertise and for making it so easy to read and understand. Please keep up the wonderful work. It is clear you have saved many lives in the past and your book is sure to save many more in the future. God Bless. (from a fellow kittie mom)

Book Description
A rose is a rose is a rose, but every rose garden -- and every rose gardener -- is unique. In Beautiful American Rose Gardens, Mary Tonetti Dorra, author of Beautiful American Vegetable Gardens, captures the special beauty of twenty-four rose gardens devoted exclusively, or nearly exclusively, to America's most beloved flower. Traveling from Maine to the Pacific Northwest, from Florida to California, Dorra not only discovered a variety of rose garden designs, but also a myriad of approaches to cultivation, depending on climate, garden size, location, and, of course, the gardener's favorite roses.
Roses, long considered to be impossible to incorporate into the landscape, here prove themselves to be durable rather than delicate, versatile rather than difficult, and in every case absolutely dazzling in their splendor. Working out the logistics of successive bloom and meeting the challenges of too much heat, too much cold, too much moisture, or too poor soil, each gardener has developed his or her own cultivation plan -- and a selection of their secrets is presented in Growing Tips from the Gardeners.
What is most striking about this celebration of the rose is the shrub's potential variety -- endless combinations of colors, from the purest whites to the brightest reds and oranges; of forms, from tiny Miniatures to towering, tree-engulfing Ramblers; and of uses, from military rows to sinuous free-form borders to startling accents in the middle of the woods. Every featured garden is a gem that will inspire: New England old garden roses, some descended from those the Puritans carried across the Atlantic; a Colefax and Fowler-designed Palm Beach garden; the butterfly-shaped garden at Boone Hall plantation in South Carolina; the French-inspired garden of Maison Chenal in Louisiana; the astounding 350 varieties of roses grown in a garden in Spokane, Washington; and Dolores and Bob Hope's high-profile Hollywood garden.
With more than 250 color illustrations,
Beautiful American Rose Gardens offers both intimate views of individual roses as well as bird's-eye views of overall garden designs. Tips from the owners, caretakers, and designers bring to life the fun, challenge, and joy that these gardens inspire. The garden plans and a thorough source list are a great starting point for new garden planners and an excellent reference for veterans. In all,
Beautiful American Rose Gardens is an invaluable resource as well as a stunning tribute to America's favorite flower.
Customer Reviews:
More for the rich than the poor.......2000-06-25
Beautiful American Rose Gardens is a good but not a great book because too many of the rose gardens discussed in this book are too large (acres and acres). The pictures are wonderful and descriptions are well written and I recommend that rose lovers read this book. However, the book doesn't give enough detail into how a reader can create their own rose gardens, especially if they are not professional rosarians or wealthy enough to afford professional gardners. Most of the gardens in this book are owned by rose retailers or rich or famous people like Bob Hope.
INFORMATIVE, COMPREHENSIVE--A GREAT GIFT!.......1999-11-03
I was drawn to this book by the stunning pictures of roses and rose gardens. However, it is the wealth of valuable information on EVERY aspect of roses that make this one of my all-time favorite gardening books.
This book would make an excellent present for the neophyte and expert gardener alike. The author's passion is contagious. A great read and highly recommended

Book Description

GREAT STORIES ABOUT OUR MOMS........2001-11-15
IT IS A TREAT TO READ ABOUT DIFFERENT STORIES ABOUT VARIOUS MOTHERS. THIS BOOK REMINDS US HOW IMPORTANT OUR MOMS ARE.
WE SHOULD ALWAYS GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR THIER GUTS ON BEING MOMS.
Exceptional, poetic and moving.......2000-09-28
One has to bear in mind that writing about people one knows is very subjective, and this is the author's right. People simply are not objective about those close to them. The writers of this book have accomplished a creation that has resulted in a beautiful specimen of literature, rich in description and sentiment, both amusing and tragic.
How can one not laugh when Jaime Manrique quotes the only comment his mother makes after she sees her son's pictures in a magazine spread for the first time: " You look fat, You'd better lay off those pies" and how can one not cry when he writes "The most wonderful tribute I can pay to my mother is to say that whereas most children automatically love their mothers, I've grown to love Soledad." But these quotes don't mean much without reading all that precedes them.
And then, who will ever forget, once read, Alba Ambert's haunting search for a mother she has never known and how she consciously forms a life for herself based on this lack of knowledge?
If you are looking for straight storytelling, you will find it here, but you will also find great sentiment and poetry within these pages. That in itself is worth the read. One no longer cares as one reads along if it is true or not; it still touches the soul.
Unimpressed.......2000-09-10
When I first saw this book in the bookstore, I could not believe that someone finally put together a book about Latin mothers. As a person with a Mexican mother, I was hopeful that my unique experiences would finally be told. I was wrong. The writing in this book is dishonest and pretentious. I kept getting the feeling that the writers were trying to impress the readers with their clever writing and big words. It certainly did not help that the editors chose to exhaustively list all of the awards and accolades ever bestowed upon the writers. What does this have to do with writing about your mother? Even though some of the stories were potentially touching, I did not shed one tear because I simply could not get over the "look at me" writing. If someone wants to read a beautifully written book about a mother that made me cry and think about my own mother, please read Growing Up by Russell Baker. Russell Baker's mother did not have to be Mexican for me to be touched by her son's honesty and the beauty of his writing.
A wonderful and diverse cross-section of Latino culture........2000-05-09
Esmeralda Santiago edits Las Mamis, a powerful gathering of Latino authors who recall their mothers. The fourteen women portray a cross-section of Latino culture and economic backgrounds in this loving memoir of influential parents.

Book Description
Lawrence Donegan's dream is a modest one, really. The intrepid journalist longs for a quiet, simple life far from the filth and noise of the big city.
And he thinks he'll find it in Creeslough.
No News at Throat Lake
From the moment Donegan arrives in the quaint Irish village, he is plunged into the problems and pitfalls of rural living. First, he needs to drain his home of water. Then he needs to find a job. After a brief and bloody stint as a Creeslough farmer -- dubbed "Quentin Tarantino's All Creatures Great and Small" -- Donegan decides to go back to his writing roots. He takes a job at the Tirconaill Tribune, a blindly idealistic, libel-slinging tabloid run by two men and a dog. Thus begins a passionate love affair between a big-city hack and a small-town rag.
Sublimely funny and effortlessly hip, No News at Throat Lake is a refreshing memoir of Irish life and times. Filled with unexpected curiosities and predicaments, it's a hilarious, sharp-edged portrayal that ponders what every foreigner wants to know about Ireland -- what's it like to live there, anyway?

Not as good as it sounds.......2003-05-10
In an attempt to escape the artificial and crazy life of modern life for a more simple way of living, Lawrence Donegan moves from Glasgow, Scotland to Creeslough, Ireland, a small rural community. The book details the year he spent living there, working for the small community newspaper and playing for the local Gaelic football team. Though it sounds like this might be an amusing book about a fish out of water, about a big-city guy adapting to small-town life, it's not really as amusing as it sounds. The author adjusts to his new life and learns the ways of small-town life. Period. And it's not really that entertaining or amusing. There's some funny anecdotes here and there, but not as many as you'd think, and it ultimately took me quite awhile to get through this book.
a man who can laugh at himself.......2001-07-30
This is a fun, enjoyable book. Donegan is a self effacing man, but one who has an an ecclectic, and noteworthy series of achievements for a young man -- rock musician, golf writer, and journalist for a internationally known newspaper. Having visited Donegal and been charmed, he decides to abandon his mainstream life in Britain and embrace bucolic rural Ireland.
Of Irish extraction, in typical Irish fashion, he mocks his own inadequacies and pitfalls. As his Irish period proceeds, he recognizes his naiviete in assuming that he would be embraced by and acclimate to Donegal society. He is such a likeable guy that you can't help smiling while reading of his daily struggle to make friends and to be seen as professionally credible. His descriptions of striving to make the team in Irish football are hysterical and endearing -- you both admire his persistence and his brutal honesty in sharing his mediocre performance. After a long period during which he is beginning to break into the local culture he recognizes that he is lonely -- not only for a companion, but also for the life he sought to escape.
Great descriptions of the laconic, iconoclastic locals. Having myself lived in a rural area where we only began to be accepted by the locals after seven years, I could identify with Donegan. However, he is kind spirited and not resentful -- he recognizes and appreciates the cohesiveness of Donegal society. Good stuff, with a solid underlying message.
Goods News for Lawrence Donegan.......2001-04-26
Rural Ireland has never been funnier! This is a gem. Donegan captures Irish country life and the quirky Irish themselves. It's not a book that says, "READ ME," but you'll be awfully glad you did.
