Pretty Accurate.......2006-05-04

Pretty accurate however some of the prices listed in the Guide Book are outdated so double check all quoted prices.

Most practical guide to mid-price travel.......2005-10-17

I tend to prefer the layout of Frommer's guides, and this one was no exception: easy to read with easy to find, relevant info. Of course, no one guide to a country this size can cover it all in depth. Insight and Nat'l Geographic have the best pictures, and Let's Go is the best budget travel guide and might be worth buying even for non-hostelers. Daytrips to Eastern Australia is a good supplement for longer stays there.

The first reviewer said Frommer's has only 30 pages on Melbourne (it has 46) and 30 pages on Sydney (it has 90). That's plenty for a country guide, and Frommer's gives a good variety of restaurants, hotels, and sights both in the cities and the countryside. Don't expect 90 pages to say it all about a city of 4 million. Check the Internet, AA club guides, city books, tour companies, and spend all the time in Oz. And buy this book. It's the most complete I've seen.

A few comments & some comparisons.......2005-07-27

I'm surprised this is only the second review on this book. I agree with the previous writer that one probably needs to read more than one travel guide on a country as big and diverse as Australia, but I would definitely give this guide more than just 3 stars. I think it deserves at least a four, but to sort of counteract his paltry three stars, I'm going to give it a 5. :-)

For one thing, although he's right about the photos being rather sparse, having worked in the publishing field for a few years once, this is obviously intentional to keep the costs down. It more than compensates for that by having detailed, well written, informative text. Also, I have a recommendation below on how to approach these guides in terms of how to use the shorter, more photographic guides, versus the longer, less visual ones like Frommer's.

For example, if you want beautifully illustrated, glossy photos of Oz, you can pick up the Insight guide, the Dorling Kindersley, or the Nat'l Geographic guide, all gorgeous guides visually, but they are five to seven dollars more than this one, and contain 200-300 fewer pages of text. They are truly beautiful, stunning, and graphically very well-designed and laid out books, and after looking at them, I almost felt like I didn't need to spend $4000 on a real trip to Oz anymore since the photo essays in these books were so good. You can take an armchair excursion for $30 for the DK book and save yourself several thousand dollars. Plus you don't need to sit in those cramped coach seats for 14 hours, which doesn't especially appeal to me since I'm 6'4" and I'm not exactly built for that.

My recommendation here is to spend a couple of hours with any of these guides just looking at the great photos on the glossy pages in the cafe of a Border's or B & N bookstore, make mental notes on what you're interested in from there, and then buy and use the bigger but less lavishly illustrated Lonely Planet, Fodor's, or Frommer's guides to get more information. If you use this two-pronged approach you'll get the most for your money, or you could even buy one of each if you're flush with cash. The DK, Insight, and Nat'l Geographic guides are great too, I just happen to prefer getting two to three hundred pages worth of information and fewer photos for 30% less.

For one thing, most of us have seen all the amazing pictures of Oz to begin with. And I'd seen several nature specials on Australia, and I didn't need to be convinced of how cool a country it is to visit from a natural beauty and photographic standpoint, or I wouldn't be thinking of plunking down thousands of dollars of my hard-earned money to fly half way around the world for a vacation in the first place. :-)

Whichever way you decide to go, happy travel guide browsing and buying!

I looked through many books when it was time to have a bathroom redone. This book although not large, had some of the best pictures and ideas of the many books I looked at. I used one of their bathrooms as the base for my remodel and it came out looking great. Definitely check this book out if you are thinking of remodeling or even just freshening up a bathroom.

Great under the cover ideas..........2007-09-21

This little treasure will have you looking at cast off items with a more resouceful eye. Many of these items would not get a second glance but the author has found interesting ways to repurpose flea market or discarded items. The project on the front cover is an example of a creative way to use those small side boards once part of old dining room sets. I am a fan of stripes, so the small dressers done in wide stripes has great appeal as well as a playful side. The techniques suggested can be applied to a variety of objects not just the ones illustrated in the book. I can't wait to go out this week end and rescue some unloved objects and give them a new lease on life. Undoubtedly this book is a great find...one of the best for sparking new ideas for those low on cash but high on imagination.

While I did find some valuable tips, most of the rooms were outdated, and overall I was disappointed by this book. Try Trading Spaces' "Instant Impact" or Martha Stewart's "Decorating with Color" instead.

Great Book for the DIY, HGTV, TLC Channel Fan.......2006-01-13

I watch a lot of HGTV, DIY and TLC channels and am hooked on the decorating shows.

I liked this book because it DID give practical info and many of the projects were not budget-busters. I mean the kitchens didn't look like they were using a $75K budget like on Designer's Challenge. Most of the projects seemed more in line of something a DIY could tackle, i.e. painting cabinets, sewing window coverings, wallpapering, etc.

Various decorating styles were covered in this book and I got lots of ideas from it. Most of the included projects did not seem difficult. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for ideas to update their home without spending LOTS of money.

Become a Before & After pro indeed.......2005-09-26

This book explains how to transform different rooms in one's home as it clearly categorize the different rooms and shares design ideas for anyone, from people with an interest in Interior Design (like myself) even to individuals who don't really care about Design, but simply wishes to have change and variety. It is also simple in that sense because there are certain projects and "how-to" explanations for creating certain 'looks' directly from the rooms featured in the book. From creating your own storage cabinets and areas to wall treatments and other projects are featured in this book. This book has certainly spiked my interest in Interior Design even more. I love it and I can ALWAYS refer to it.

hgtv before and after decorating.......2005-09-10

i love watching hgtv and do so almost every day. this book has great ideas and you can do most of the stuff by yourself. there are several projects that i plan to have my husband make for storage. they even let you deside your own style which is great because i love the way just little changes can make your whole room better. one of the better books to decorate with.

Thistlewood's diary, kept over the course of forty years, describes in graphic detail how white rule over slaves was predicated on the infliction of terror on the bodies and minds of slaves. Along with careful notes on sugar production, Thistlewood maintained detailed records of a sexual life that fully expressed the society's rampant sexual exploitation of slaves. This is an absolutely brilliant book, and I do not use that word lightly. It is must reading for anyone interested (even tangentially) in Caribbean history or indeed in fascinating history in general.

This fascinating book is scrupulously researched and very well-written. It is also, in its fine-grained portrayal of the slave-holder Thomas Thistlewood, deeply disturbing. The paradox that Burnard explores is how Thistlewood, an amateur botanist and would-be student of the enlightenment, could also be a sadistic slave-holder in a viciously degrading society. It's extremely thought-provoking, and Burnard's own careful judgments seem consistently on the money. For me, this is an ideal work of academic history.

Anxiously Awaiting My Copy.......2005-09-09

I recently read a thorough review for this book and can hardly wait to receive it now. I've read bits about Thistlewood before, but this book, based heavily on his diaries, seems like it will cover more on the man and his life in Jamaica.

Less than the Sum of Its Parts.......2003-02-24

A raggle-taggle collection of reviews and essays with no real unifying theme or drive - except a relative interest in matters Irish - this book has nevertheless done that most rare and testing of things in a collection of book reviews - it has persuaded me to buy not one but two of the books under review. Mahon's several pieces on McNeice make that out of fashion figure of interest to the non-Irish and non afficionado. There is a fun profile of Anthony Burgess and much memorabilia of literary youth at Trinity etc. There is everywhere an urbane sense of what the literary life is and how such and such a writer may have come to such or such a bad end or occasional lapse. Solid book reviews which are rewarding to dip into and a civilised, gentle tone throughout. How many essay collections can you say that of?
