    Book Description

Mexico's Yucatan peninsula offers a spectrum of attractions: dazzling tropical beaches in Cancun and along the Caribbean coast; luxuriant coral reefs; charming colonial cities like Merida and Campeche; the world-famous ancient Mayan cities of Uxmal, Palenque and Chicen Itza. Cadogan's guide covers these celebrated sights in full, but also goes deeper to out-of-the-way hotels with miles of empty beach, to ruins still half-buried in the forest, into the quirky way of life of sleepy country towns and Mayan villages, and on adventure trips into jungle reserves. It gives you all you need to know - whether you want to enjoy the local culture or just mellow out in a hammock by a palm-shaded beach. This guide includes practical travel advice; 400 carefully selected places to stay; over 600 restaurants, bars & cafes; details of newly excavated Mayan sites; 44 maps & site plans; stunning color photography; essential information on diving, snorkeling and watersports. (5 1/2 x 8 1/2, 540 pages, color photos, maps, illustrations)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for visiting Mayan sites.......2005-04-03

I have just returned from a two week driving vacation that visited 23 Mayan ruins and several museums and cities between Cancun and San Cristobal de Las Casas. I used it for hotel reservations as well as Mayan site and city visits and found it to be excellent, much better than the Moon guide or the Kelly guides to ruins. It let me down only once, in Cuidad de Carmen, where it had no map of the city, and its hotel recommendations were incomplete and misleading. Otherwise it was accurate and up to date. I recommend it highly to travelers who want comfort but not luxury, and who like to travel fast and intensively.

5 out of 5 stars What a guidebook should be.......2004-09-30

I'll add my voice to the chorus of praise, with one very small caveat. Comprehensive, in-depth, great historical background to put everything in perspective. We traveled with this and the Lonely Planet, but eventually just left the Lonely Planet in the car at all the sites, as Nick covered things so much better. But this is starting to get a bit out of date - published in 2002, so much of the info is now 4 years old. While there was more practical information (restuarants, hotels, etc.) here than I expected, it's worth the few extra bucks to get another, more updated guidebook as well.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Excellent Book.......2003-11-17

I took this book on my trip to the Yucatan, and it proved to be an absolute gem. The itemized, unreadable lists of hotels, restaurants, and sights that comprise most of the other guide books here are kept to a reasonable length. Instead, there is vivid -- and very readable -- prose, organized logically. What you can see by driving down southward along the Mayan Riviera, with histories of the region, histories of every little town. It's all put in context, like a novel. The detailed walkthrough of Chichen Itza made me a bigger expert on Mayan history, architecture etc. than the guide we hired. Overall, I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Jam Packed with Great Information.......2003-04-08

This book is jam packed with in-depth information about the Yucatan including a full chapter on the Maya, another chapter on the history of the region, on top of all the important travel-related information that you usually see in travel books. I have a few books on the region and I think this is one of the best!

4 out of 5 stars Very good book for the independent minded travler!.......2002-12-31

I spent 3 weeks in the Yucatan this fall and this book helped make my trip very enjoyable. I traveled to Merida, campeche, cozmel, cancun, plus many of the ruin sites and this book proved to be an acurate and reliable friend! If you like to travel on your own and seek out those outta the way places this is the book for you. I also enjoyed "Tourist in the Yucatan" fun thriller adventure novel set in the yucatan.

3 out of 5 stars I dedicate this review to Mojo........2006-01-24

Alright, I think it's important to note that I bought this book as a dog owner/lover, not as a breeder or veterinary student; so, I might have a different impression of it than the average buyer.

The Dog is a textbook. No doubt about it. It's hard-bound, relatively expensive, black-and-white, and doesn't contain nearly enough pictures. It's dry. It's the epitome of the school textbook you hate. The one that when trying to do homework, you feel like it hates you back.

That said, I like this darn book. The information in the first chapter detailing the evolution, domestication, and history of the dog sold me on the book right away. The entire book is densely packed with information. I like the line drawings. It has a great glossary. Also, if the info in this book isn't enough for you, there's a large section detailing references and suggested readings.

Basically, although The Dog might not be a fun book, it is definitely an informative one.

At last companion animal professionals, dog owners, and adoption counselors have a superb comprehensive reference source for canine development and physiology, learning theory, behavior, health and disease, and nutrition, all in a single volume. Previously it was necessary to have on hand several books, each covering one or at most two of these topics. While the primary audience for The Dog is undergraduate students in animal sciences programs and other students in professional programs, the book readily serves a broader audience of breeders, trainers, kennel operators, humane society personnel, and veterinarians, and it is entirely accessible to the general dog-owning public. Separate sections on the benefits and responsibilities of dog ownership and factors to consider in selecting a dog make the volume particularly valuable for shelter personnel, adoption counselors, and anyone considering acquiring a dog.

Case combines academic credentials as a specialist in companion animal nutrition (her previous book is Canine and Feline Nutrition: A Resource for Companion Animal Professionals, 1995) with training and long experience as a behaviorist, dog trainer, and college educator. Not surprisingly, the chapters on nutrition are thorough yet concise, offering important information otherwise unavailable to the non-specialist interested in the nutritional needs of dogs and in industry practices of dog food formulation and production. The sections on behavior provide cogent explanations of developmental stages, communication signals, social interaction, the principles of learning, and training techniques, as well as an excellent overview of behavior problems. Case's balanced and incisive discussion of the dominance model of social interaction (and its misuses) is particularly welcome.

At $34.95, the volume is priced between a college textbook (many of which now cost twice this price) and a trade book. In fact, we can be grateful to the Iowa State University Press for keeping the cost of this excellent volume within reach of the general public. Separate works on canine behavior, nutrition, and health would easily exceed the cost of this publication. The Dog is hardcover, beautifully illustrated with line drawings, and includes an extensive bibliography of recommended readings, a glossary, and an index. Volunteer adoption counselors at the Champaign County (IL) Humane Society are highly encouraged to read The Dog to expand their knowledge of topics frequently raised in the course of counseling adopters. A companion volume on cats is reportedly in the works, and we at CCHS eagerly await its publication. --Mary Stuart (Mary Stuart is a former member of the CCHS Board of Directors and has taught adoption counseling to shelter staff and volunteers for the past 10 years.)

The rose has always been a popular flower; ancient Romans, Egyptians, Greeks, and Chinese cultivated rose gardens and used the blooms in festivals and funerals. Yet the roses we grow today have generally been in existence for less than a century, and English roses--in spite of the traditional-sounding name--have all been developed since the 1950s by rosarian David Austin in an effort to combine the fragrance and beauty of old roses and the frequent blooming habit of modern hybrids. 100 English Roses for the American Garden presents those English roses best suited to the diverse North American climate. As the curator of rose collections at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, author Clair G. Martin knows his roses. With a large section devoted to general rose care (mulching, composting, container growing, and cutting) and individual pages (each, of course, depicting a single perfect rose) detailing the availability, stature and habit, usage, and disease susceptibility of each variety in various climates, this is an enjoyable and useful introduction to a fragrant subject.

5 out of 5 stars my first counsel.......2003-03-18

This is the book I check first when I have a question about an English Rose. The organization is great, the photography is beautiful, and the plants are described by someone who has grown them in the US. This book is therefore best for those growers who live in Southern California, but still, it's better than if it was written by an English grower. This book also describes the negative aspects of varieties, which is one of the most helpful things. One thing that would improve this book is a photo or description of the plant habit so to provide information on where to plant in the garden. E.g. is Abraham Darby staunchly upright, graceful, floppy? This book isn't all-inclusive, and of course there are new roses being released every year, but if you've got to have the latest, does it matter? Check out also 100 Old Roses for the American Garden, by the same author. Also a great book.

              5 out of 5 stars Nice book..........2000-06-17

I stumbled onto this book because it was featured in the Washington Post in a column written by Adrian Higgins (Henry Mitchell's sucessor). A photograph of the Austrian Copper rose accompanied the article (the cover), and I'm a sucker for burnt-orange, so I followed up on the book. I am very pleased with it.

Although the cover is paper, it's a plasticized paper and a sturdy book. I mention this first, because I will refer to the book often, it feels pleasant to hold in the hand, it's easy to carry, and it can get a little moisture on the outside and not crumble.

I'm tired of having my roses eaten alive every spring, so I decided to pull out all the hybrids and fall back and regroup. This book takes me back to the old roses that are a little more hardy and can put up with Washington DC weather patterns.

The book is nicely laid out. A front section entitled, "What Makes an Old Rose" describes how old roses came to be. The next section is a "field guide" to help you distinguish roses at the nursery. This is followed by 168 pages of roses and text from 'Alba Semi-Plena' to 'Zephrine Drouhin.'

What makes this book unique as well as useful is the layout. Each rose is covered in a two-page section. A text description is on the right-hand page, and a closeup photograph of a specimin of the rose showing the bloom, buds, and leaf and branch structure is on the left-hand side. Because it's an actual photo, one can identify the rose in question more easily.

The text is useful. Not only are you provided a nice historical write-up on the rose, you are given the 'demographics' including the uses, fragrance, and suseptibility to diseases. Many of the roses appear to be relatively disease free and fragrant--and I found all of them except the "green" rose beautiful.

The back of the book contains a list of mail-order houses and gardens where the specimins can be viewed. Since I live in the DC area, I have acces to the U.S. National Arboretum and Woodlawn Plantation, but locations for viewing old roses are located in most states.

5 out of 5 stars A NEW DIRECTION FOR GARDEN INFORMATION BOOKS........1999-10-14

The day has finally come when an ergonomic, comfortable yet informative, easy-to-read garden information book has hit the bookshelves, and my workbench! For the first time, I don't feel like I need a botanical dictionary or Harvard degree to get some down and dirty tips on how to make my rose garden shine. Mr. Martin brings himself into my garden when I take the book with me along with my gloves. I'm able to learn more than just latin botanical names as I go through the histories and anecdotes Martin shares from his years of experience. Makes me feel like I have a little deeper connection with the plants in my border when that happens. His insight and humor make this field guide the tops for everyday use. I had to buy a second copy just so that I wouldn't have to worry about the rips and soil smudges on the original one. Can't wait for the next in the series; hear it's supposed to be coming out soon. Thank you Mr. Martin!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful introduction to nature's classiest roses.......1999-01-18

If you ever wanted an approachable guide to English roses, this is it! Each variety includes a wonderful full page closeup photo that makes you want to order more and more Austin roses! Interesting history of each variety and great practical tips on how they'll perform. Handy size makes it an easy companion on shopping trips too. Good ideas on rose care but could use a few more illustrations on pruning, for example. Overall, very well done....and a visual treat too.

4 out of 5 stars Beautuful book, perfect for a coffee table.......1998-11-23

This book gives you general information on popular English roses. Many books of this kind are too specific on growing the plant and unattractive for a non-enthusiast,but well-balanced descriptions in this book are fun to read for everybody. The author gave a short explanation on the name of each rose, and you will not be bothered to try to remember a Shakespearean character whom the rose was named after. The reason I did not give 5 stars is that the visual info on the bloom is not enough. Most of the photos show only the plant in full bloom and does not help you to imagine how they appear in the process of blooming.

Larry Hagman's autobiography is as entertaining as an episode of Dallas, and he seems a whole lot nicer than J.R. Ewing, his second star TV role (the first was as Barbara Eden's "master" in I Dream of Jeannie); he's candid about the drugs and drinking that led to a 1994 liver transplant. The emphasis, however, is on good times and friends ranging from Keith Moon to Carroll O'Connor. He was born in Fort Worth in 1931, when his mother was only 17. Mary Martin soon divorced his father and departed to claim the stardom she was destined for. Hagman is frank but nonjudgmental about the fact that he had a cool relationship with his mother until after the death of her second husband and manager, Richard Halliday, who gets the book's only hostile portrait. Generally, the mood is sunny as he relates adventures like shooting deer with Dad ("three cases of hard liquor, thirty cases of beer, and something like forty packs of cigarettes ... were the most important ingredients of a good hunt"); military service in London, where he met Swedish clothing designer Maj Axelsson (his wife of 45 years); and a respectable Broadway career in the '50s and TV fame in the '60s. Hagman is refreshingly unpretentious about his place in the scheme of things. "I help keep [TV audiences] sedated," he remarks, "and at the same time I help sell cars, aspirin, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products. So far I've been pretty good at it." --Wendy Smith

                            Book Description

On November 21, 1980, over 350 million people worldwide tuned in to find out: Who shot J.R.?

In portraying the scheming, ruthless J.R. in Dallas during its entire run, from 1978 to 1991, Larry Hagman reached a level of fame and recognition that is rare, if not unique. Now the man behind J.R. tells his own story in an autobiography that is at once rowdy and moving, self-searching and scandalous, juicy and a "recovery story" -- and often outrageously funny.

Though Larry Hagman is best known for his starring roles in two hugely successful -- and very different -- television series, I Dream of Jeannie and Dallas, his life has been a star act from birth.

Born to the theatrical purple as the son of the legendary Mary Martin, Larry Hagman received his first exposure to the heady world of show business through her -- as well as experiencing a childhood that was lavish and glamorous and full of problems. His father was a tough, smart, wealthy Texas lawyer (sound familiar?), his mother Broadway's most beloved leading lady, and the young Larry Hagman was torn between their two very different worlds. After his parents' marriage ended, he was shunted from one boarding school to another, trying to satisfy his father's expectations by working as a cowboy, hunting, and raising hell and still to live up to his mother's expectations in the world of the theater.

In the end, theater won out, and, following his mother's example, he began to pursue a career as an actor. Following a stint in a soap opera, he got his big break with I Dream of Jeannie, and from that came instant fame and celebrity, from which he never looked back. Weaving hilarious (and often scandalous) stories about his early years in show business into a personal story that is breathlessly engaging, Larry Hagman shares his behind-the-scenes life with the reader, his star-studded cast of characters including Linda Gray, Victoria Principal, Barbara Eden, Jean Arthur, and Joan Collins, not to mention George C. Scott, Burgess Meredith, Joshua Logan, Jack Nicholson, Sidney Lumet, and Valerie Perrine, to name only a few.

But with the success came many temptations, a few of which Larry Hagman succumbed to, and about which he writes candidly and unsparingly in this memoir, including his battle with drugs and alcohol and his subsequent recovery.

It was as J.R., however, in the phenomenally successful series Dallas (the second longest-running TV drama in history), that Hagman earned his greatest fame. Taking the reader behind the scenes, he shares many stories of ego clashes, offscreen relationships, and flamboyant behavior durning his work on that series -- and the pain he experienced as drugs and alcohol began to take their toll. In fact the greatest drama in Larry Hagman's life -- after his long, loving, and successful marriage to his wife, Maj -- came when he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and entered into a race against time to find a liver donor.

The "recovery" side of his story is not something he takes for granted, having overcome two addictions as well as undergoing a liver transplant in 1995 and a subsequent near-fatal motorcycle accident. His account of these difficulties is at once unflinchingly courageous and matter-of-fact and will be a source of inspiration to many readers. Despite problems that would have stopped most people, Larry Hagman continues to work on television and in film (he made a brilliant appearance in Mike Nichols's film about presidential ambition, Primary Colors) and enjoys life hugely.

Dishy, witty, frank, and unsparing of Larry Hagman himself and of others, Hello Darlin' is, like its author, destined for international fame -- a rare memoir by a show-business celebrity that not only makes us laugh, applaud, and cry, but also leaves us with respect and admiration for a man who can not only tell a good story about others, but reveal something of himself.

4 out of 5 stars Major Nelson's Long Strange Trip.......2005-08-22

Someone left this book in my house last summer and I kept it around for months waiting to see if anyone wanted it back. If no one's coming to claim it, it must not be very good, I thought. One day, when I was bored, I picked it up and read it out by the pool, and you know, contrary to my expectations that this wouldn't be my sort of book, it was pretty darn good.

Actor Larry Hagman is a cool guy. He's funny, surprisingly spiritual and deep, and boy has he ever lived one amazing life. In this memoir, he talks about growing up in Texas, son of a good old boy rancher and the famous actress Mary Martin, then discusses his assorted misadventures in the years before he first found fame playing Major Nelson opposite Barbara Eden on the '60's sitcom I Dream Of Jeannie. Hagman went on in the '70's and '80's to play the iconic bad guy J.R. Ewing on the massively popular prime time soap opera Dallas, and fans of that series will especially delight in his behind the scenes tales of the making of that drama. In among his wisecracks and jaw-dropping stories, and especially anecdotes of his trademark elaborate practical jokes, Hagman also strikes into his serious side when he waxes philosophically about death and dying, and is brutally frank about the lessons he painfully learned from his own brush with oblivion following his liver transplant in the 1990's.

Before I read this short, fast-paced autobiography, I had little idea who Larry Hagman was, but for fans of his or the series he helped make famous, this is a treasure trove of facts and tall tales. Like I said, it's a pretty funny book.

                            4 out of 5 stars Sleeper Hit.......2005-06-16

I found this book quite by accident and enjoyed it a great deal. I'm surprised that this book did not get more play in the media. It is honest to the core and gives a candid insight into the man who played JR and Major Nelson. The best parts of the book deal not with acting but with Hagman's relationship with his mother. It is truly moving to read. I also found it interesting how fond of and close he ramains with Dallas co-star Linda Gray (Sue Ellen). Evidently his mother loved her just as much. When the great actress Mary Martin died, Hagman had a photo of Gray placed inside his mother's casket.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Story about an Excellent Man.......2005-04-21

I loved this book... It was true and honest and a joy and a pleasure to read made me love Larry Hagman more than just as J.R. Ewing and as Jeanie's master... It was awesome it made me feel good to learn what all he has done and how he is doing I am sure he will be great however long he is still alive.. I love him... He is a great actor and a great person.

5 out of 5 stars More to life than just being J.R........2005-03-15

I received this book as a gift from someone who new I enjoyed the television show Dallas, and I can really say it was a treat.

I must say that Mr. Hagman had a very interesting life that goes way beyond what we know him best for: playing the merciless J.R. Ewing on Dallas and his other hit I Dream of Jennie.

From the get go, Larry speaks about his youth, being the son to Broadway star Mary Martin (famous for being Peter Pan), his father and tenuous relationship with his step-father Richard.

The book reads in a chronological order from boyhood, through his stint in the military (where he met his one and only wife Maj), to his first movie roles, through his television career and wraps up with his last series 'Orleans' and his liver transplant.

He has many stories which are entertaining and fun reads. So fun in fact I wanted more and was disapointed only in the fact they weren't long enough or more of them. Mr. Hagman had some fascinating quips and stories regarding such people at Burgess Meredith, Carol O'Conner, and other tv and silver screen legends.

But not everything was picture perfect....There were times of poverty, illicit drug use, and confronts his drinking issues which led to his liver transplant head on.

I was amazed at what a world traveler he was, even before his most memorable character of playing oil tycoon J.R. Ewing. He had seen more of the world before his 20th birthday than most people do their whole lives, and many times early in his youth, he did it with no job or no money, but always had a positive outlook on life.

A very inspirational autobiography where Larry does show you the silver lining on all dark clouds.

Again, for me the trouble with this book was it just seemed to short....I would have loved to read many more of his 'tall, but true' tales, many of them with a martini or bottle of champagne in his hand.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT "Light & Easy" READ.......2003-09-25

I loved this book...but I may be a little prejudiced, cuz I love Larry Hagman! I was lucky enough to have met him when he autographed my copy. I must say, he's very personable, not one bit stuck-up. He also signed my 1980's can of JR Beer and couldn't believe someone still had a full JR Beer from the 80's!!! A real genuine kind of guy...which I imagine is a little rare of such a long-time celebrity. I only regret his wife, Maj wasn't there...I'd have loved to meet her too. She must be SOME LADY to have put up with Larry all these 45+ years! If you want a good, funny, light-hearted read about some of Larry's antics thru his life, this is the book for you! My only negative about the book? I wish it had been longer...I couldn't put it down and finished it in two bedtime reads. THUMBS UP!

                              Book Description

During his brief political career, Archibald Campbell, 5th earl of Argyll (1530-73) played a crucial role in the mid-century upheavals in Scottish and British politics. This definitive study on Argyll is a major contribution to Scottish political history, and a significant new contribution to the history of the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. The study of his career changes significantly the axis of mid-Tudor studies as well as the study of the dynamics of Scottish history. Important European contexts and resonances are also explored.

Early modern historians have theorised about the nature of the new 'British' history for a generation. This study examines how British politics operated in practice during the age of Mary, Queen of Scots, and explains how the crises of the mid-sixteenth century moulded the future political shape of the British Isles. A central figure in these struggles was the fifth earl of Argyll, the most powerful magnate not only at the court of Queen Mary, his sister-in-law, but throughout the three kingdoms. His domination of the Western Highlands and Islands drew him into the complex politics of the north of Ireland, while his Protestant commitment involved him in Anglo-Scottish relations. His actions also helped determine the Protestant allegiance of the British mainland and the political and religious complexion of Ireland. Argyll's career therefore demonstrates both the possibilities and the limitations of British history throughout the early modern period.
