      Book Description

In the Middle Ages, St. Francis of Assisi listed dirtiness as a sign of holiness...
But by the mid 1800s clean was in.

The early Greeks and Romans were among the first to build public baths and toilets. One of the biggest Roman baths held three thousand people at once -- and everyone went naked! But when those empires fell, so did the standard for cleanliness. It would be 1,400 years before bathing came back into style.

Newbery Honor-wining author Patricia Lauber and artist John Manders team up again to tackle the dirty business of getting clean in their latest book, What You Never Knew About Tubs, Toilets, & Showers. In this hilarious how-to of bathing and bathrooms, readers can take a trip through the stalls of history and learn not only how bathrooms came to be, but who used them and why.

5 out of 5 stars "But, where did they go to the bathroom?".......2007-09-22

The question, "Where did they go to the bathroom?" is asked at living hsitory museums all the time! Both adults and children want to know the every day details of basic human needs. At the Royal Governor's Palace, the jail, the courthouse, and the homes of signers of the Declaration of Independence -- THAT'S the question whispered by blushing adults or blurted out by curious children.

This book answers all these questions in an honest, entertaining and accurate manner. The illustrations are appropriate for both children and adults. They are less revealing and/or "inapproprate" than classical art.

      I heartily recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Most hilarious and resourceful book.......2006-07-13

I loved it! I thought the colorful illustrations were hilarious. The book not only entertains, it provides the reader with useful research information. Amusing sidebars poke fun at the primitive waste-disposal methods that prevailed through the ages. Readers will also be amazed to discover that baths were considered unhealthy during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It was not until the discovery of germs in the mid-1800s that the importance of cleanliness was recognized, and it wasn't until 1851 that the White House had a bathtub with running water. My only concern about the use of this book within the classroom would be the colorful illustrations of naked peoples backsides. The language of the book was very easy to follow and comprehend, which would benefit students ages 5 - up.

      2 out of 5 stars Factually Interesting...but Inappropriate .......2006-03-31

While I found much of the information interesting, I thought the author and especially the illustrator crossed the line.

I do not find this book or its illustrations appropriate for elementary age children.

      * Nudity
      * Illustrations of men and women bathing together
      * One illustration actually shows a woman's nipple

VERY INAPPROPRIATE and I am disappointed that my children's elementary school has this in its library.

5 out of 5 stars A quick history of cleanliness........2003-04-07

A quick history about plumbing, bathing, and attitudes towards cleanliness! Lauber takes us on a jaunt through history starting with the cave man and his ideas about bathing. She then jumps to the ancient Middle East, and then moves on to Greece and Rome. Then she covers the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Lauber then moves to the United States, and the rest of the book focuses on modern bathing. The book is illustrated by John Manders (who does an excellent job adding bits of humor in his drawings), and does not include any photographs of ancient ruins or artifacts or the like. But there is still plenty of information--did you know that ancient Romans used a sponge on the end of a stick instead of toilet paper? The stick was rinsed in salty water after they used it. And that a flush toilet was invented in 1594? This is a readable nonfiction book that makes learning about the history of cleanliness fun.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by this author/illustrator team!.......2001-08-19

After I had read their book on the history of dining, I couldn't wait for this one. Tubs, Toilets and Showers handles the awkward subjects of what you do in the bathroom and how people used to do it. It has vignettes from several cultures and time periods.

Many children (and some adults) will be surprised to learn that the Europeans came to value cleanliness much later than did many other cultures. They may laugh to imagine how certain historical figures might have smelled.

Since the book deals with bathing and eliminating, some of the illustrations do involve nudity. However, the illustrator has drawn the cartoons in such a way that genital areas are hidden. I would not find the drawings objectionable for young children.

Baths and hygiene are often areas of conflict between parents and children. A book like this could give some perspective, and its humor could soften the family bathroom struggles.

        Book Description

Stone Age people invented the first knives...and also the first spoons.

In the Middle Ages the first books of manners told readers to wipe their greasy fingers on the tablecloth. And in 1669 King Louis XIV ordered that table knives should have rounded ends because there'd been too many stabbings.

In What You Never Knew About Fingers, Forks, & Chopsticks, Patricia Lauber and John Manders serve up a hilarious and informative look at how ways of eating and manners have changed through the ages. This well-researched tour of social history makes the subject of how we eat more fascinating and fun than you ever imagined it could be.

5 out of 5 stars Taught me a thing or two!.......2001-12-28

I did not realize the history of eating utensils was so interesting. I did become intrigued when I lived in Thailand and learned to eat their way with a fork and spoon or watched Europeans with their forks and knives. I am still not good at eating sticky rice and accompanying dishes with my hand. My favorite situation was watching Thais describe the way Chinese eat with chopsticks. The Thai think that the way Chinese eat is barbaric. Little do they know that most Americans think they eat with chopsticks too!

5 out of 5 stars Gave my kids a new appreciation for utensils.......2001-08-19

This book takes a humorous, illustrated look at the history of eating habits. It educates, while simultaneously poking fun at ancient and modern affectations associated with the dinner table. It starts and ends with a primitive family who are just beginning to make use of fire.

It gives brief descriptions of eating customs and utensils in different cultures over the centuries. The evolving dining and feasting customs of medeval Europe are particularly amusing. Children will have a new appreciation for their spoons, knives and even forks after reading the author's amusing take on their introduction into our popular use.

This is a book that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in our family--from the six-year-old to the adults.

        Book Description

Simple and satisfying answers to questions young children love to ask -- and it's a picture book too!

        Why is the sky blue?
        Why is soap so slippery?
        Why do stars twinkle?
        Why does my stomach g-r-r-owl?
        Why do cows moo?

These are just some of the charming questions that are answered in this generous and richly dynamic collection of the six books from the Question and Answer storybook series. Everyday childhood activities, such as an excursion to the park, splashing in the bathtub, or fixing a snack in the kitchen, prompt so many questions for young children. Why? provides easily understood explanations for dozens of these everyday mysteries.

A delightfully buoyant storybook approach takes young readers inside the kitchen and out to the park; from the farm to the supermarket; and from bathtime to bedtime. Along the way, the simple question and answer format reveals much valuable and fascinating information about science, nature and the world around us.

Bright, playful illustrations are the perfect complement, telling the story behind common questions that curious kids ask-and explaining the answers that parents and teachers want to know. Perfect for reading aloud at bedtime or for use in a classroom setting, Why? combines the best qualities of educative nonfiction and joyous storybook to delight young readers.

        4 out of 5 stars pleased.......2007-03-08

I would have given 5 stars but it isn't what we expected,we thought it would be more like a textbook. However, our daughter just turned six and is learning to read- she really likes to read the questions so daddy can answer it- for this reason we appreciate the time together and she learns how to read in question format. I was a little surprised at how infomative it is while easy enough for our four year old son to comprehend. (he sits and listens too). We love the book and would buy again.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, except not as complete (big)as I would have liked.......2001-11-21

My 3 year old has already asked me many questions in this book,
so it hits the mark on being full of real questions that a real child would ask. The explanantions are short (about 1 paragraph)
and easy to understand - although I found the vocabulary sometimes a bit tough for my 3 year old. I often used simpler words while reading to her. I expect therefore that the rated age range beginning with 4 years is probably accurate from the point of view of understanding the explanations completely. The questions are arranged in groups such as "bathtime questions" and in a "story" order revolving around a child in that particular situation (ie. the child is getting a bath and is asking questions that start with "how does hot and cold water run out of the same tap" and ending with "why do my hands get all wrinkly after I've been in the bath a long time"). Each question and it's associated exaplanation and illustration cover a full two-page spread of the book. My only complaint is that the book does not actually contain as much detailed "science" content as I had hoped to find - since it is based on questions that children ask, not on concepts someone wanted to include purely for the sake of completeness. I would guess that 8 year olds might be left wanting more information that is given in the answers (which could be considered a good thing, spurning them on to further research). Certainly for the younger ages though, this is a great book. (More questions from the book: "Do the doors at the grocery store open by magic?" "Why do stars Twinkle?" "Why does it smell so good outside after it rains?" "Why do I have to use the toilet and where does it go when I flush?")

                Book Description

The artists of the Italian Arte Povera movement took as their common goals the use of simple, humble materials; an appreciation of the processes of daily life; and the blurring of the boundaries between art and nature. Giuseppe Penone, the youngest member of the group, which began in the 60s, explores these principles primarily through the act of drawing. Penone's poetic and indexical approach to this simple act finds him extending his fingerprint through hundreds of lines painstakingly handrawn in concentric rings, millimeter by millimeter. Or enlarging the lines of his forehead and eyelids in related gestures and techniques. The Imprint of Drawing examines large- and small-scale works created over the past 25 years, accompanied by essays and an interview with the artist by The Drawing Center Director Catherine de Zegher.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Fine Documentation of a Masterpiece.......2000-06-17

Certainly one of the most overlooked works of modern architecture, the Saarinen house, which this book documents in splendid detail, is perhaps the crowning work of Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen during his years at Cranbrook. Thanks to the recent restoration of the house and garden, we can now see his vision of TOTAL design; from the flatware to the tapestries to the furniture to the door handle to the landscape...

There are about 100 pages of rich, color photographs of the restored house and garden, but this is more than a coffee table book. The authors provide good historic background and lend their authoritative commentary on this masterpiece of residential architecture and its restoration.

Photographs of the house and garden are sumptuous and capture the original splendor of the house's rich interior and its many sophisticated details. Contemporary black and white photographs documenting Saarinen's career and the history of the house are included.

5 out of 5 stars The true saint.......2005-08-26

I grew up in India but never really got to know Gandhi until I read this book. It is the story of a man and how he grows into a saint - the force that got India its freedom.
But Gandhi wanted more than just the freedom of India from the British. He wanted each man to be free of all evils. His aspirations were greater than any other Indian freedom fighter - and so were his ways. In the struggle for freedom, he did not want to corrupt the individuals. Gandhi proved that you could wrestle with a pig and yet remain clean.
Louis Fischer has done a great job describing Gandhi and his life. He writes without any bias. It is an easy read and is truly inspiring.

3 out of 5 stars enlightening, but convoluted .......2005-06-11

Fischer's recount of Gandhi's life does a satisfactory job of providing facts and commentary on the Father of Modern India. Though this book may seem more approachable, however, because it is considerably shorter than several other biographies (and indeed Gandhi's autobiography), the facts of Gandhi's life and the Indian Nationalism movement are presented anachronistically and often without sufficient context. Thus it is often difficult to have a complete understanding of where, when, how, and to whom Gandhi was applying his peaceful resistance techniques.

Notwithstanding Fischer does an excellent job of elucidating Gandhi's worldview and the religious implications behind Gandhi's contrubitions to the shaping of 20th-century world history.

5 out of 5 stars Great for fans and neophytes alike........2004-03-23

I find it a little odd that I just wrote in the title that people can be 'fans' of Gandhi. Like he is a rock star or famous model. But in essence that is what most people who admire influential people are. And I admit that I am a fan of Gandhi.

Being such I decided it was time to learn something about him that was not a movie (though the movie is very good; truncated but good) or a magazine article or some old handout from high school I found in a dark corner of my closet. So I chose Louis Fischer's short little biography. And I am very satisfied.

Mr. Fischer does not make any excuses for being a fan of Gandhi either. Like another biographer of Gandhi mentioned, it seems everybody whoever saw Gandhi and spoke to him felt the overwhelming need to write something, preferably a biography, of him. Mr. Fischer met Gandhi twice, stayed in his Ashram for a week as a guest, and he documents it in this biography.

I fear I will sound repetitive with my biography reviews, but once again this is a great introduction to Gandhi. Just over 200 pages, full of important details, but never drowning in the complications of them (though it gets close to such when dealing with the creation of Pakistan, which is admittedly complicated and difficult to explain).

Louise Fischer writes with emotion. This is not a straightforward academic account of the life and times of Gandhi, but a thank you letter to the spirit and power that Gandhi was. For one rare moment I let the emotion sway me as Gandhi's death was recounted and I felt a very rare sympathy that I have rarely ever experienced with the written word; a remarkable achievement.

5 out of 5 stars His life is his monument........2002-01-14

The perfect introduction. This is the perfect book for someone who wants to learn the essentials about the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi without having to wade through some of the larger books that have been written. This one is under 200 pages, and is laid out in three easy to read sections (From Birth To Greatness - Gandhi In India - Victory and Tragedy). Fischer does not bog down into political minutiae, post-assassination trial stuff, or hair-splitting Gandhi-isms (on this latter point for instance, Gandhi's own autobiography devotes four consecutive chapters to his internal agony over whether or not to include goat's milk in his vegetarian diet)! Fischer's book is more of an OVERVIEW of the profound world-shaking life that was Gandhi. Yet it is immensely informative, and well-paced. The author personally met with Gandhi in 1942 and again in '46, and his book shows that he had a wonderful understanding of the Mahatma's faith and convictions. Those who want to know more about Gandhi should, however, go on to read the autobiography (subtitled "The Story of My Experiments With Truth") and also Yogesh Chadha's "Gandhi: A Life".

The book ends abruptly with the three shots, the smile fading from Gandhi's face, and his final words on earth "Oh God."
"His legacy is courage, his lesson truth, his weapon love.
                                                His life is his monument.
                                                He now belongs to mankind."
We turn the page, and hope that something is there... but it isn't. The world since, has not seen anyone like Gandhi.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, detailed and accurate........2001-04-23

Through this book Louis Fischer successfully presents the Mahatma of India to the English speaking world at large and especially to the Americans. The soul of Mahatma Gandhi is well captured here in words. The author takes pains to elaborate the political movements in Britain, the varied struggles of Indians in South Africa and the complexities of the socio-political situation in India in order to paint an accurate picture of one of the most remarkable human beings of the 20th century. The philosophy and witness of this Indian saint shall continue to influence and enrich the lives of millions in the years to come and Fischer's deeply moving story of his struggles shall go down into history as a worthy testimony to his life and message.

The book does inevitably contain Indian words and concepts, which could stand in the way of making it a leisurely reading. But the author has a great advantage since he has a familiarity with the Indian situation and a personal acquaintence with Gandhi himself. Anyone who is intereested in working for the advancement of humanity should learn about Gandhi and this is the book to begin with.
