I like the restaurant section.......2005-09-03

I swam through the pages while relaxing by the hotel pool. I always like the restaurant reviews and we went to quite a few nice places. For Fodor readers you can expect the same ol same ol. They don't go off the deep end and are rather conservative with their outings. Sampling the restaurants and keeping the listings current is their strong suit.

Good for Drivers.......2005-08-19

This book is a decent guide for trip planning in Hawaii. For each island, there is a general introduction to geography, climate, and history, a map, and a listing of greatest places to visit. Next come suggested itineraries for varying lengths of times, for example, 1 day, 3 days, or 8 days. The main section of each chapter consists of specific suggestions for things to do and places to stay and eat for localities on the island, together with more detailed maps. Relative measures of costs for the recommended hotels and eateries are noted, as well as addresses, phone numbers, and web sites where available. Notes about sports, theater, and shopping are also included. At the end of the chapters are more tips about such topics as airport arrivals, transfers, and transportation, car rental, and sight-seeing tours.

At the end of the book is a collection of articles covering more general information about the state. This section includes a brief overview covering topics from geology, to mythology, to fashion (the famous Aloha shirt). Next is a listing of books and films to enjoy before you visit, then a historical chronology, some general travel information about Hawaii (business hours, car rental rules, what to pack, safety tips, taxes, climate, holidays, etc.). There is also a introduction to Hawaiian phrases, a menu reader, and an index. Metric conversion tables are printed inside the back cover, and vacation checklists inside the front cover. There is a set of color plates covering all the islands at the very beginning of the book.

One of the particular strengths of this guide when compared to others is that it often provides estimated driving times for routes across the islands or to particular attractions. This can be incredibly helpful for trip planning, since it gives you a gauge of what activities might be possible to fit into a single day, or how long to allow to get from one place to another. The suggested itineraries are also quite useful-even if you don't plan to follow them, they do provide a starting point for planning your own itineraries. While this guide book doesn't specialize in pointing out the cheapest places to stay and eat, there are some possibilities listed for all budgets, and including the web addresses is quite useful.

A GREAT VALUE.......2005-07-01

I have to give Fodor's Hawaii a Gold Star. We traveled to Lanai and Maui and Kauai with our golf group and as the days passed we all got a chance to read each other's guidebooks. All of us agreed that this was way over the top for QUALITY and insider tips. Theunissen pulls out all the stops and I'm just rereading it now that I'm home and still find places I want to return to and spend time. Make sure you get the latest copy. They come out with a new one every year.

Adequate, but better guides available.......2005-06-16

We just got back from a trip to Oahu and the Big Island. This book is satisfactory for persons not doing many activites, but the guidebooks "Oahu Revealed" and "The Big Island Revealed" had
a great deal more information about snorkeling, ocean kayaking, beach conditions by season for boarding, etc. The pictures in the "Revealed" series really helps you get a feel for the places you may want to visit. I would recomend Fodors for a person who is not leaving a megaresort or staying only in Waikiki, but the other books have much more helpful info about activities and parks.

Also, the maps in Oahu revealed are the best I've found. Period. Lots of em, well cross referenced, good color schemes, and easy to read.

Remember her -- and this book.......2004-04-28

A handful of artists try their hands at many media -- photography, painting, acting, and just about anything else. Lola Schnabel is one such artist. And she exposes her art in "Remember Me," revealing a scratchy collage of mind-bending photos and paintings. Warning: contents may take a bit of time to digest, but they're worth it.

Schnabel's drawings/paintings are vivid and sharp. Sometimes they're just pencil drawings, minimalistand deliberately smudged in places. Others have thin layers of bright paint on them. Her photographs are quite different -- much softer and blurrier, as if seen through a thick window. They seem much more distant and grounded.

Schnabel (who had a role in the movie "Basquiat") doesn't waste time trying to lure in viewers. Her work is just there, and it has no pretenses. Her work has a rough, exhilarating quality, like a an urban crazy quilt. As an added bonus, Rene Picard wrote an essay to accompany "Remember Me." It serves as a good counterpoint to the artwork, as Picard spins up some poetic prose about Schnabel's art and persona.

Schnabel's work is full of light and color. Specifically, her photos have light and her paintings/drawings have color. Splashes of vivid color spread over her drawings and paintings -- sometimes stylized, sometimes just accentuating the rough pencilwork. And her photographs are simply lovely -- horses in the woods, friends and family, graveyards.

Beautiful and vivid, budding artist Lola Schnabel's work is like a pile of rough diamonds -- unpolished but still precious. The title is a pretty fortunate one -- "Remember Me" shouldn't be forgotten.

This book is great! It is like reading a piece of history. Pictures and lists of all sorts of non-sport cards. Highly recommended!

A Great Synopsis of Jerry's Solutions.......1998-12-05

A great book that lists all of Jerry's tonics and remedies in on place. The book covers everything from how to keep squirrels from eating bulbs to fertilizing plants. Jerry's alternative solutions have worked great in our yard and allow us to avoid using large amounts of commercial week killers and insecticide.

Other than the concoction that I already had the recipe for, this book is nothing but babble and non-sence. Not a picture in sight, at best an occational sketch. It was expensive and I wish I had saved the box so I could send it back. Now I just look forward to my garage sale in hopes that I can get a dollar or two for it. I'm almost tempted to send it back at my expence and tell them to just KEEP IT! Thank you for your time.

A fascinating book about a complex man........2007-08-16

I was just a kid when Have Gun, Will Travel was on TV. I didn't realize how good it was, however, until I recently saw the 1st 3 seasons on DVD. This led to an interest in Richard Boone, the man.

I found the book fascinating. I like the interview format, as I think that gives a more realistic picture of a real, complex human being. Each person knew him in a different context, and often during a different stage of his life.

I highly recommend it.

Is This the Book for You?.......2005-03-22

Tip of the hat to Rothel for putting together such a fine book. if you have ever admired the film career of Richard Boone, this is the book. A biography, lots of photos, interviews reprinted, and a somewhat listing of his film credits. HOWEVER, if you are looking for a book that covers the Have Gun, Will Travel TV show, this is NOT the book. Amazon offers The Have Gun Will Travel Companion by Rayburn and Grams and it's far more retailed. Heck, the first season's episodes list the dates the episodes were filmed. Rothel's doesn't. The Rayburn book is 500 pages thick and covers nothing but the Have Gun program, Rothels is half the number of pages and only spends a part of this book covering the Have Gun program. But, Rothel's book has better photographs. If you want a book about Have Gun, buy Rayburn's. If you want a book about Richard Boone, buy this one.

Courage +Paladin = Richard Boone.......2003-05-24

When I was born in 1953, my first memory of television consisted of Westerns Television shows as well as movies. I loved them at the time but after time, I grew blaise.

Just since last year, I have been faithfully watching "HGWT" each Saturday morning (like a child) and became fascinated and.... admittedly a little enamored of Richard Boone.

This month I have just read "Richard Boone: A Knight Without Armor in a Savage Land" by David Rothel. What a fascinating and complex man Richard Boone was, and I was delighted to have it affirmed how much I suspected that the character of "Paladin" was the real Richard Boone.

The book is filled with interesting photographs, interviews along with summaries of all the "HGWT" episodes. I was astonished to learn that Richard Boone was also starring in three others tv series. I had never heard of "Medic", and wish his anthology series could be televised. I always respect the work of repertory theate. And what a group of performers he had selected! Typically, TV execs aired this anthology series opposite "I Love Lucy"...unfair competition.

It was heartwarming to read of his wife's memories of her 30+ years with Boone. She has alot of guts and staying power!

This is the perfect book for any devoted fan of TV westerns!
I am thankful to the author for this labor of love.

Skilled with a gun, or with his fists, knowledge of subjects as
various as the Menonites to playing the Japanese game of Go, an
expert of fine wines, well tailored colthing, and of course a ladies man about town. James Bond? No Paladin! Paladin was James
Bond before James Bond hit the big time. Here was a series way ahead of it's time. Tell me which western produced in that covered such subjects of the mental illness and the conflict of
being a part of two cultures? Richard Boone brought life to the
roll as Paladin. It is sad that the series lasted "only six years" but maybe it is for the best because those six seasons
was some of the television the world has seen.
