Book Description
A guide to the eccentric people, places and events of London for travelers looking for a different kind of guide to touring the greatest city in the world.
Customer Reviews:
A great starting point........2005-12-05
This book I found was really good for inspiring searches for different things in London. I used it quite extensively for a trip a few years ago. I did have some difficulty locating a few things which I originally attributed to inaccuracies on the part of the writer, but upon further investigation discovered that they did exist as he described them but that I was simply unable to find them (viz. Richard Burton's Tomb in Mortlake, the mysterious Hill Garden in Hampstead). I would advise the reader to research some of the items that he wishes to find on the internet before heading on a wild goose chase. A good supplement to this book is Andrew Duncan's Walking London.

Book Description
"We will go to America!"
It is 1868, and Carl Erik's family faces starvation in Sweden. As their hopes fade, they must endure a journey over land and sea to reach a better life in a new country thousands of miles away.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for the Classroom.......2000-08-03
The Long Way to a New Land and The Long Way Westward are companion books that chronicle a family's journey from their Swedish farm, which is suffering from an extended drought, to a new home in Minnesota. The books describe the difficulty and dangers of the journey in a way that is non-complaining and full of optimism for a new life in America. Teachers, these books are wonderful for integrating with other subjects and topics, such as immigration, westward expansion, steamships, trains, geography, and American life in the 1860s.
Book Description
Easy-to-use, reproducible lessons on literary terms, comprehension and analysis, critical thinking, related scriptural principles, vocabulary, activities, plus a complete answer key.
Customer Reviews:
Religious content = inappropriate for public school use.......2004-03-11
This study guide to the excellent book by Joan Sandin has some constructive activities. However, overall the activities are fairly simplistic, and the references to scripture make much of the "digging deeper" activities inappropriate for use in public schools.

Customer Reviews:
for the Grosz fan.......2007-05-22
When I first bought this book it was lower in price than the present price. Many of the sketchbooks are of scenes in New York...the subway ,the street.Grosz was an enthusuastic drawer. Many are in pencil...Sometimes a little color..Like Reginald Marsh he used the pocket sketchbook extensively. This book is better than the Reginald Marsh book of his sketches. It shows the different type of sketchbooks he used.Marsh used practically the same books throughout his career. The skizzenbuchs here cover the years from 1909 until 1958. The text will tell you how he used his sketches for particular works. His style changed from 1912 until the time of the Weimar republic. His early work wasn't biting, that came in after he served in WW 1...I have the (facsimile)sketchbooks of Stuart Davis it is interesting to look at both artists Davis made sketches of Manhattan ,the signs, the elevated etc.Grosz did some of this as well but, he always stuck to the figure. Some of the stick figures appear here. He used watercolor, ink wash,in his books. There is documentation in the back of the book..size,subjects ,description of each sketchbook, techniques. There are essays here of Grosz scholars. Such as Mary Beth Lewis who has written insightfuly of George Grosz.I have a lot of books and catalogues on Grosz and this book is one of the most valuable. If you find the present political situation deplorable ,you will find inspiration in Grosz and this book in particular.

Fun and useful resource -- Very highly recommended.......2002-01-23
Being owned by 24 cats can present quite a challenge. With so many disparate personalities among the cats, I am always looking for books that offer insight, hoping that through understanding harmony can be achieved. While I can't report perfect harmony, I can report that matching the cats' sun signs to their personalities has provided interesting and useful information.
For persons who don't know their cat's birthday, behavior easily will match their sun sign. All humans will find the information useful in gaining a better understanding of their cat's behavior as well as insight into personality quirks. The illustrations are wonderfully drawn, and I admit to being quite delighted when I turned to the Taurus page. Not only does my Dickens match the Taurus description perfectly, but he's the match for the illustration as well, right down to the perfect black beauty mark over his mouth. SUN SIGNS also includes information into making successful matches between cat signs and human signs as well as amusing stories of cats to accompany each sign. A wonderful resource, SUN SIGNS comes highly recommended.
Bright Blessings,
Weaver

Book Description
Presents the complete submissions for the 2004 Display Design, Display Industry, Commercial Space Design and 38th Sign Design Awards.
Book Description
In this major new biography of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and the first to appear in English based on Turkish sources, Andrew Mango strips away the myth, to show the complexities of one of the most visionary, influential, and enigmatic statesmen of the century. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was virtually unknown until 1919, when he took the lead in thwarting the victorious Allies' plan to partition the Turkish core of the Ottoman Empire. He divided the Allies, defeated the last Sultan, and secured the territory of the Turkish national state, becoming the first president of the new republic in 1923, fast creating his own legend.
Andrew Mango's revealing portrait of Atatürk throws light on matters of great importance today-resurgent nationalism, religious fundamentalism, and the reality of democracy.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating biography.......2007-06-29
This is a fascinating biography of Ataturk who rose from the confusion surrounding the end of the Ottoman empire to become the driving force in founding the Turkish Republic. Mango's account is a must read for anyone interested in Turkey.
Authoritative biography.......2007-05-09
The current political disputes in Turkey between secularists and Muslims, between those who look to the West and those who look to the Muslim East, mirror the very similar conflicts that took place in Atataturk's day. This authoritative biography provides a detailed picture of Ataturk and his efforts to bring modernity to Turkey. It took a strong and authoritarian leader to accomplish the task, which remains incomplete. Mango gives as full an account of Ataturk's complex character as is available in English. Ataturk had brilliant leadership and rhetorical talents as well as many personal shortcomings. He drank heavily, had difficult relations with women, and became suspicious, even somewhat paranoid in his later years. His style was often dictatorial. Mango, while providing much enlightening background and insights, sometimes inclines to weigh the scale of judgement too heavily in Ataturk's favor. Nonetheless, this fascinating work is compulsory reading for anyone wishing to understand the creation, culture and politics of contemporary Turkey.
Good bio of incredibly interesting man.......2006-08-27
Ataturk is an amazing man, both for what he accomplished and for his creation of the modern Turkish state. The book does a good job of taking you through what Ataturk did, how he accomplished it, and the changes he wrought to create Turkey from the remains of the Ottoman empire.
I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because the writer is a good biographer, not a great one. He's not bad, he's just not great. So it's more like you are watching the history unfold instead of being there.
With that said, it's an incredible story. It is one of the most amazing transformations in the history of civilization. He started with the remains of the Ottoman Empire that was about to be divided up into pieces by the great powers and ended with a Turkish state that is secular and part of the modern world. And he did this in 30 years.
Simply amazing.
a must read for ppl interested in the history of Turkey.......2006-05-16
Andrew Mango's "Ataturk" is a thorough depiction of Ataturk's life and the circumstances in which it was shaped. While reading this book you will feel that the author did a substantial research on the subject.
Ataturk I The Founder of Modern Turkey.......2006-04-29
Mr. Mango outdid himself. Excellent book. Well researched, well written, easily readable. Very highly recommended.

Warmth.......2006-11-04
I became aware of this book through an article Hemingway wrote about books he would like to read twice. Well I can say that this book is best read in the winter, for it will melt the snow in puddles around your shoe, and warm your heart and soul at the same time. So make haste and buy it now, while the cold winds still blow.
A Naturalist's Childhood on the Pampas.......2006-08-16
As we continue to pave over the beauties of our world and turn them into concrete wastelands, it is good to think back what life was like 150 years ago before we began the process of destruction in earnest.
W. H. Hudson, the naturalist, is revered in Argentina, where they refer to him as Guillermo Enrique Hudson and name streets and towns after him. In simple and stately prose, he writes about his boyhood as one of several sons in an English family that ran an estancia on the Pampas. Despite several failed attempts to school him, he managed to pick up one of the best educations available: by using his eyes and ears to study nature. His skill in language, which is considerable, came from reading his father's books on his own.
Whether writing about ombu trees, plovers, snakes, lightning storms, rheas (Argentinian ostriches), or his neighboring ranchers, Hudson brought a whole world to life with this book.
Hudson published FAR AWAY AND LONG AGO in 1917 while he was living in England -- around the same time that a Frenchman named Marcel Proust was following where that elusive taste of madeleines led him in REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST, and around the same time that World War I was destroying a whole way of life. As he writes in the book:
"It is difficult, impossible I am told, for any one to recall his boyhood exactly as it was. It could not have been what it seems to the adult mind, since we cannot escape from what we are, however great our detachment may be; and in going back we must take our present selves with us: the mind has taken a different colour, and this is thrown back upon our past. The poet has reversed the order of things when he tells us that we come trailing clouds of glory, which melt away and are lost as we proceed on our journey. The truth is that unless we belong to the order of those who crystallize or lose their souls on their passage, the clouds gather about us as we proceed, and as cloud-compellers we travel on to the very end."
FAR AWAY AND LONG AGO is perhaps one of the greatest autobiographies ever written. Although I finished reading it several days ago, I am still feeling its afterglow and get this itch to re-read passages from it. This is, indeed, a book that will withstand several readings.
Recreates the history, culture and geography of Argentina in a way few travel books accomplish.......2006-06-26
The Argentine pampas was a land of freedom and excitement: one literary figurehead W.H. Hudson describes in his memoir FAR AWAY & LONG AGO: A CHILDHOOD IN ARGENTINA. Descriptions of natural history and wildlife abound - and also of politics and interpersonal relationships of the times. You'd think FAR AWAY & LONG AGO would give insights into Hudson's childhood and life - and it does - but more importantly it recreates the history, culture and geography of Argentina in a way few travel books accomplish.
Diane C. Donovan
California Bookwatch
A masterful memoir of growing up.......2005-06-26
I could never make it through Hudson's fantasy __Green Mansions__, but __Far Away and Long Ago__ is another book altogether. Written when Hudson was approaching eighty, more than forty years after he had left Argentina for good, it's filled with the kind of longing you might expect. And even though he's a witness to the mid-nineteenth civil wars in Argentina or, more incredibly still, listens to travelers reciting poems by the eighteenth-century Spaniard Menéndez Valdés, Hudson seems modern; he makes other times, other places, far away and long ago, as he calls them, seem incredibly near.
Hudson's excellent short story "El Ombú" is also well worth seeking out. And, finally, while it's true Hudson left Argentina for England, the US also has some claim to him; it was from New England, after all, that, shortly before his birth, his American family left for Argentina. Just thought I'd make that clear, since people are always calling him "Anglo-Argentine".

Book Description
The first book in a trilogy, A Celtic Childhood offers a collection of colorful characters and humorous memories spanning Watkins's boyhood years. Whether saving his elementary school Christmas pageant from utter disaster when a fire breaks out on stage, or dressing up as a gangster and causing havoc at a gala wedding affair, the roisterous young Liam never allowed for a dull moment. Here we see the origins of Watkins's literary and theatrical talents as he takes us to his family gatherings in Limerick and Wales, where Celtic poetry, history, and song were as lush as the rolling countryside.
"Bill Watkins should receive credit for re-associating the words â~humorous,' â~thoughtful,' and â~educational' with the term â~Irish memoir.' Watkins succeeds at creating a lively, readable account of the first 17 years of his life, because he possesses the skill of an Irish bard: He can mix poetry, song, story and history together to make a pleasing tale."-Missoula Independent
"A Celtic Childhood will appeal to all people who enjoy music and myths and a wee bit of mischief."-San Antonio Express News
"Brilliant and entertaining."-Jim Brooks, Irish Gazette
"Laugh-out-loud funny, with an eccentric cast of characters. . . . Watkins's embellished childhood tales make for pure reading pleasure."-Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Adventure, humour, sadness... Life.......2003-04-24
Reading Bill's work has given me a new outlook on my own Celtic heritage, and I'm finally 'hearing' the songs and stories my grandparents couldn't share with me. In 'A Celtic Childhood', Bill proves himself a true Bard in the modern world, serving his own happiness, tears, songs, stories & wit with the world. And we come back begging for seconds... And thirds.

Drop dead funny, but also bittersweet. I loved this book and recommended it to all my friends
Delightfully powerful, poignant, and witty.......2001-02-22
I was caught up in this first book by Bill immediately because of his warmth, humor, and the amazing way that his unsurpassed storytelling skills vividly draw you into the events of his childhood as though you were right there. A Celtic Childhood reveals the humor and heart and goodnatured view on life that Bill exudes today, in spite of any troubles and hard times. His perspective on life is very refreshing, and not at all bogged down by any self-pity or guilt as others have unfortunately exhibited in memoirs.
It's very difficult to put this book down. There are adventures around every corner which all turn out inevitably funny no matter how disastrous. These are told at an exciting and rapid pace similar to a child's energy and intake of experience. In particular, I love the language and the rhythm -- the ways that Bill questions in his early years the meanings behind common phrases, sayings, and words. His view of the adult lives around him are hysterical and apt!
His inclusion of a glossary and tune lyrics, as well as injection of many insights and facts of Celtic history, lore, and culture all serve to make this memoir an incredibly rich and vital read, that will leave an indelible imprint upon the heart and mind of all who read it.
Rarely have I read a book with such heart, and phenomenal wit and way with words. Bill's a grand storyteller, and a wonderful, generous and multi-talented human being. Looking very forward to reading "Scotland is Not for the Squeamish", and the 3rd book in this trilogy when it comes out next year!

Celtic lore.......2000-05-09
Bill Watkins book is a breath of fresh air with a unique style of prose, seldom, if at all, found these days. Poetic, humorous and delightfully witty, the oral tradition of Watkins Celtic roots opens a door to a rich heritage that even a non Celt can appreciate. All ages will love this many-layered tale of wild adventure, mothers especially.

Book Description
Ireland is home to some of the world's most enchanting myths and tales. But many of these stories would have been lost if they hadn't been recorded and written down. Poet and Nobel laureate William Butler Yeats was one of these fortunate witnesses. In "The Celtic Twilight," originally published in 1893, he collected some of the most delightful myths and folktales of his native land.

She met the spirit a third time in the bogeen. She asked what kept it from its rest. The spirit said that its children must be taken from the workhouse, for none of its relations were ever there before, and that three masses were to be said for the repose of its soul. "If my husband does not believe you," she said, "show him that," and touched Mrs. Kelly's wrist with three fingers. The places where they touched swelled up and blackened. She then vanished. For a time Montgomery would not believe that his wife had appeared: "she would not show herself to Mrs. Kelly," he said--"she with respectable people to appear to."

I had heard of William Butler Yeats, and I must say he is quite an excellent poet. The dreams I had of the old worlds came to life in this.
An Excellent Guide to Understanding Yeats' Early Poetry.......2001-01-28
When Robert Frost (A not very likable fellow, when you read his biographies, despite his excellent poetry.) visited Yeats in Ireland, he made a comment to the effect that, "It's no wonder he believes in faeries." He was responding to the beautiful, mystical Irish landscape Yeats grew up in. This book, even though you're (probably) not in Ireland when you read it, will have you responding much as Frost did. The peasantry have so much of their pagan ancestry in their blood that, despite their ostensible Catholicism, their deep belief in "the little people" comes out as strong as ever when questioned about it. Reading these anecdotes, some of them grafted directly onto Yeats' early poetry, gives them a power they would not have had you not read this book and realized how "here and now" faeryland was to the common people at the time. The Celtic belief that death (into Faeryland)is far more desirable than birth is made beautifully apparent in this book. Hence, by the way, the celebratory Irish wake. Hence also this lovely poem
Heardst thou not sweet words among That Heaven-resounding minstrelsy? Heardst thou not that those who die Awake in a world of ecstacy? That love, when limbs are interwoven, And sleep when the night of life is cloven, And thought, to the world's dim boudaries clinging, And music, when one beloved is singing, Is death?
These sorts of things, as well as Yeats' poetry, are worth deep consideration in this present world where medicine is deemed omnipotent...and yet, nevertheless, we all die.

Quality, not quantity.......2000-12-25
For those interested in an academic study of Irish folklore and specifically, Finn MacCool, this is one of the best books I've read on the subject. Nagy is thourough, rigorous, AND a good writer, a rare-enough combination in the world of academic literature. The subject itself, and Nagy's insights into the character of Finn and his fiana, are also extremely interesting and enlightening. A must-read for the serious student of Irish folklore.
