3 out of 5 stars Covers more of Florida than competing guides.......2000-04-12

The most useful aspect of the Fodor's Guide for Miamai and the Keys when compared to other guidebooks is that this book covers the areas north of Miami, all the way up the Atlantic coast to Sebastian. My past few trips to Florida have been to Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach and Vero Beach as well as Miami and the Keys. It's nice to have the basic information in one place.

However, I always feel that Fodor's guidebooks tend to be a little superficial. The last five or six I've read haven't included the hotels I've stayed at (for example a Hyatt that has been open for at least ten years). I also don't care for the type of paper stock that Fodors uses. I like to take a highlighter to my guidebooks and you can't use them on this paper because it bleeds through the pages. I will continue my quest for the perfect guidebook!

Great places to stay in Key West. Never disappointed...however, it forgot to mention the great cuban coffee, cafe con leche, that Frommer's went into detail with and had mentioned as a must have. Great restaurant's, esp. the cuban ones.

          Book Description

Common Sense and a Little Fire traces the personal and public lives of four immigrant women activists who left a lasting imprint on American politics. Though they have rarely had more than cameo appearances in previous histories, Rose Schneiderman, Fannia Cohn, Clara Lemlich Shavelson, and Pauline Newman played important roles in the emergence of organized labor, the New Deal welfare state, adult education, and the modern women's movement.

Orleck takes her four subjects from turbulent, turn-of-the-century Eastern Europe to the radical ferment of New York's Lower East Side and the gaslit tenements where young workers studied together. Drawing from the women's writings and speeches, she paints a compelling picture of housewives' food and rent protests, of grim conditions in the garment shops, of factory-floor friendships that laid the basis for a mass uprising of young women garment workers, and of the impassioned rallies working women organized for suffrage. From that era of rebellion, Orleck charts the rise of a distinctly working-class feminism that fueled poor women's activism and shaped government labor, tenant, and consumer policies through the early 1950s.

          5 out of 5 stars a great book on a powerful topic.......2000-12-18

This book chronicles the lives of four working-class Jewish immigrant women from their common start as survivors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire through their careers as labor leaders. These women are absolutely astounding American heroes just waiting to be discovered. In addition to her awe-inspiring subject matter, Orleck also employes a readable and interesting writing style that is true to life and avoids becoming bogged down with useless facts. This book reminded me how much one person really can make a difference simply through conviction and perseverance.

            Book Description

From the perspective of historical sociology, Richard N. Juliani traces the role of religion in the lives and communities of Italian immigrants in Philadelphia from the 1850s to the early 1930s. By the end of the nineteenth century, Philadelphia had one of the largest Italian populations in the country. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia eventually established twenty-three parishes for the exclusive use of Italians. Juliani describes the role these parishes played in developing and anchoring an ethnic community and in shaping its members' new identity as Italian Americans during the years of mass migration from Italy to America.

Priest, Parish, and People blends the history of Monsignor Antonio Isoleri—pastor from 1870 to 1926 of St. Mary Magdalen dePazzi, the first Italian parish founded in the country—with that of the Italian immigrant community in Philadelphia. Relying on parish and archdiocesan records, secular and church newspapers, archives of religious orders, and Father Isoleri's personal papers, Juliani chronicles the history of St. Mary Magdalen dePazzi as it grew from immigrant refuge to a large, stable, ethnic community that anchored "Little Italy" in South Philadelphia. In charting that growth, Juliani also examines conflicts between laity and clergy and between clergy and church hierarchy, as well as the remarkable fifty-six-year career of Isoleri as a spiritual and secular leader. Priest, Parish, and People provides both the details of parish history in Philadelphia and the larger context of Italian-American Catholic history.

"While Priest, Parish, and People is in itself a rich ethnographic story about a most unusual priest, a particular Philadelphia parish, and the growth of parishes to meet the needs of a rapidly growing immigrant population, it is also an important story of the struggle between Irish and Italian cultures in the assimilation process, and an interesting insight into church politics and the workings of the Roman Catholic Church." —William V. D'Antonio, Catholic University of America

"This is a well-written, in-depth study of Philadelphia's Italian Catholic community. Focusing on a parish and its remarkable pastor, it chronicles the progress of an Italian immigrant parish from its earliest days in the mid-nineteenth century to its emergence as the social and religious center for the Italian community in the early twentieth century. For the author, writing this history was clearly a labor of love. He has provided all of us with a chapter in the history of Philadelphia Catholicism that was long overdue." —Jay P. Dolan, author of In Search of an American Catholicism: A History of Religion and Culture in Tension

"Rich in detail and culled from an array of primary sources, including the extensive writings of the second pastor of St. Mary Magdalen dePazzi, Richard Juliani weaves a masterful story. By tracing the nuanced interconnections between this first Italian national parish in the United States, its formidable pastor, and the growing immigrant community in South Philadelphia, this book provides new insights about Americanization and the formation of ethnic identity. Priest, Parish, and People is essential reading for scholars of American religion, immigration and urban history, and for anyone wanting to understand the Italian American experience." —Joan Saverino, Ph.D., The Historical Society of Pennsylvania

            Book Description

The Little Immigrants is a tale of compassion and courage and a vivid account of a deep and moving part of Canadian heritage. In the early years after Confederation, the rising nation needed workers that could take advantage of the abundant resources. Until the time of the Depression, 100,000 impoverished children from the British Isles were sent overseas by well-meaning philanthropists to solve the colony's farm-labour shortage. They were known as the "home children," and they were lonely and frightened youngsters to whom a new life in Canada meant only hardship and abuse. This is an extraordinary but almost forgotten odyssey that the Calgary Herald has called, "One of the finest pieces of Canadian social history ever to be written." Kenneth Bagnell tells "an affecting tale of Dickensian pathos" (Vancouver Sun) that is "excellent ... well organized, logical, clearly written, [and] suspenseful" (The Edmonton Journal).

5 out of 5 stars Full of heartache and hope.......2004-09-29

I didn't know much about the immigrant orphans (except for a bit about Dr. Barnardo's). There were some incredible stories in this book--the kids who were abused so badly that the community advocated their running away. I also enjoyed the story about the boy who ends up at the home of the brother and two sisters who are very old, but they show him some affection which is a turning point in his life. I use this story in my American Freshman History class and the kids just about start crying every time.
Mr. Bagnell also follows up on their later lives. This fabulous, sad book is important social history. It dovetails perfectly with the whole Progressive Movement hits and misses--the reservation schools, the temperance movement etc.
Mr. Bagnell allows the immigrants to "tell their own story."
This is one of the most memorable books I've read.

This is a very well written, objective look at Britain's Child Immigration Scheme. It is a must read for any Home Child's decendant... Finally the plights and hard ships of our loved ones have been acknowledged. I'm looking forward to reading the 2001 release...

                      Book Description

This little book of quotations, which is intended for immigrants and prospective immigrants to America, is a natural by-product of "The Complete Success Guide for the Immigrant Life." It has evolved into a full blown, feisty companion book that many readers will enjoy.

This presents a mother lode of treasure found in the wisdom of the ages embedded in quotations. The words of the wise have always helped those of us who are genuine seekers desperately searching for ways to meet the challenges of a new and somewhat perplexing way of life.

There are 1001 plus quotations in this collection. These have been carefully winnowed to reflect the ideas and streams of thought that are true, timeless and relevant to most immigrants to America. Not all are serious. A smidgen borders on the hilarious. A few are loaded with the sharp wit and humor that every immigrant must have in his survival kit. Like its companion book, "The Complete Success Guide for the Immigrant Life", this quote book is meant to help the immigrant through the seasons of his life so that he may survive, even thrive and know what it feels like to be fully alive. To survive is triumph enough. But to finally dwell in that state of grace of living fully and with purpose and meaning in America - still one of the world's amazing places to be at this time- is a rare privilege and a wondrous gift from God.

I think the average immigrant in America today may not
have a lot of time to read because of the demands of
making a living. But to appreciate the immigrant

few minutes a day to read, read, read - even in tiny
                      doses at regular intervals.

Highly focused, meaningful reading can be done by
reading quotations. This book has selected the best
thoughts put into words by great men.

This quote book is just right for those with little
time to spare. It is also perfect for older children,
even teen-agers in immigrant communities who are just
beginning to figure out their roles in life.

I think every library in America should have this book
on its shelves together with "The Complete Success
Guide for the Immigrant Life", a book which The New
York Times" has called a "remarkable new book."

I'm drawn to quotations. They speak to the soul, provide guidance in good times and bad, and give glimpses into the past. I have built a collection over the years, which I carry with me each workday. What pulled me especially to Ms. Maglaya's book was a quote cited on the back, The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated by quotations (Disraeli). I couldn't have said it better.

This is a companion book to Ms. Maglaya's *The Complete Success Guide for the Immigrant Life.* Scan it and you quickly realize that, like The Success Guide, the quotes she selected are useful to everyone, not just immigrants. Those looking to immigrate to America, along with those already here, will find this book particularly useful for the insights it gives to significant parts of our cultural heritage. Everyone will find wisdom and practicality in these quotations. Some quotes will make you smile; many will make you pause and think.

So, good show, Ms. Maglaya! This little book is a winner.

                          Do Animals Go To Heaven?

The search for the truth of many questions, besides whether animals have souls, is what author Ben Garwood has tried to do in this book. Each person will come away from the book with his or her own beliefs, but I hope everyone that reads this book, will at least consider the possibility that there is, indeed, answers to be found- regardless of your chosen religious affiliation or current beliefs.

There are many interesting antidotes to be found in this book; such as, early church elders wondered if women had souls and even if they were human beings! Imagine that! That alone, is worth reading this book to discover how they decided that yes, women were human and had souls. Women were blamed for everything from plaques to natural calamities, of being substandard, with malfunctioning mental and physical facilities. Nearly one million women were burned as witches in the 17th century. There are many fascinating facts in this book that makes you wonder how we as a people actually survived.

The author's main goal with this book is for people to become truth seekers: to think and ask the questions that have not been addressed before. He says that for every person to become a truth seeker they must ask five questions of oneself - Who am I? What am I? Where did I come from? Where am I now? And where am I going?

His mission with this book is to share everything possible within the given realm of knowledge regarding each subject and what is related to it, while encouraging the reader to grow from there - not to accept what is being taught at face value, but to utilize the entire datum at their disposal while continuing to challenge, accept reject and search - To pursue truth through examination and analyses.

Ben Garwood has presented a vast amount of exhaustive research from all religions, history, quotes, adages, proverbs, maxims and sayings. Having been a educator in the public school system for forty years, Mr. Garwood, in my opinion is not only a tremendous author, but he must also be an outstanding teacher and man. I wonder if his students ever realized that they had a teacher of such a grand caliber. He has fairly presented the reader with facts from both sides, and it is up to the reader to decide.

This book is definitely not a quick read, rather it is a book to be pondered, savored and digested over a period of time, a couple of chapters at a time. To read this book quickly would not give it the justice it deserves, and one would miss much of its essence and the true flavor of this stimulating book.

I congratulate Mr. Garwood on writing this book in an extremely well written, fascinating, thought provoking, extensively researched, and a some times tongue-in-cheek manner. I thoroughly enjoyed my voyage into awaking consciousness through the pages of this book, which I consider a must read for everyone.

Do animal's have souls? Well I know what I believe, but it up to each individual to read this book and decide on this and all the other questions the author ponders throughout this compelling book.

Those of us who love our pets all go through the wonder of if we will see Buster or Beau or whoever in Heaven. Indeed, often it might seem to our hearts that Heaven could only be Paradise if that would be the case.

Ben Garwood also wondered, and in this book sets out to answer that. While his answer is comforting, it is not one that is not well thought out. He finds the majority of his research in a book that is without question authoritative, the Bible, and also uses the work of noted saints and apologists. Not to leave anyone out, however, the theories presented by non Christian religions are given attention.

***** At the close of this touching and often laugh out loud funny book, the reader will have the reassurance, as much as it is possible to on this side of the veil, that they will once again see the four legged friends who have brought this life joy. In fact, you will be surer of seeing them than of some humans. *****

                                          Book Description

Jet Li is part of a crew of new Asian stars taking Hollywood by storm. Along with Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Jackie Chan, and Maggie Cheung, Jet Li has kicked and punched his way out of the cult-film underground and into mainstream superstardom. With his performance in The One, Li becomes the first to prove his power as the top-billed draw. Jet Li, the first book published in English about the thirty-eight year-old “Gene Kelly of the action film,” follows him from his days in Hong Kong as an extraordinarily successful actor in classics like Once Upon a Time in China and his overlooked work as a director and producer. Special attention is given to his Hollywood debut alongside Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon 4; his recent star turns in the gangland fable Romeo Must Die and the sci-fi blockbuster The One. Jet Li looks at the actor’s fiercely protected private life and explains the broad appeal of Hollywood’s new Bruce Lee to fans of all ages—from Hong Kong chop-socky cultists to Blockbuster families, to the new Hollywood that has eagerly embraced him. A complete filmography of Jet Li's screen work in Hollywood and Asia as well as 30 never before published color and black-and-white photographs are included.

A solid biography of Li up to the year 2002. ("The Shaolin Temple" to "The One")
It is the best bio on Li written so far...it is probably the only one so far.
Author James Robert Parish chronicles the ups and downs of Li's personal life and film career, giving plot synopsis and a behind the scenes looks at how the film projects came about and were recieved by the public. The book is an easy read and provides an interesting look at Li's life and film career from his youth in Beijing to his big break in Hollywood. Bios written about people who are still active become dated quickly. This book will just have to do for another 15 years or so when, hopefuly, more detailed and complete bios can be written about Li's life.

Recommended for huge Jet Li fans and huge fans of the kung fu film genre.

This biography offers an indepth look at Jet Li's life. We see a humble little chinese boy from a poor family who through rigorous wushu training transforms from a martial artist into an action movie star. We also get an overview of his films and situations that lead up to him filming them. The book even manages to reveal personal things about this famous yet somewhat shy man. The only part I did not enjoy was when it implied some sort of rivalry between Jet Li and fellow martial artist turn movie star and friend Jackie Chan. Based on commnents from Mr. Li on his official website Jackie Chan is a friend of his and they socialize regularly. However overall this is a good book to buy if you want to learn more about this amazing man.

3 out of 5 stars Good overview marred by sniping at other HK stars.......2002-09-01

I found this book to be basically well written and a good overview of the career of Jet Li. While not as in-depth as a reader could wish, career highlights are covered and each of his films discussed briefly, including box office success, Jet's views on each and a run down of critical reaction.

The author has a tendency to snipe in his narrative which is highly unfortunate and which is completely at odds with Jet Li's personality and philosophy as described. An example: he claims (regarding Li's turn as a villain in Lethal Weapon 4) "unlike such peers as Jackie Chan and Chow Yun Fat, Li had no qualms about playing a screen villain for the first time". Jackie has based his career in action/comedy playing "average joe types" to great success--if it ain't broke don't fix it! More mystifying is using Chow Yun Fat in this example as Chow HAS played "villains" frequently in his Hong Kong films--as often playing a triad gangster or hitman as he does a cop or straightforward, stereoptypical hero. That his "villains" are not stereotypical, but are complex and conflicted makes this breezy comparison odd and seems to reveal the ignorance of the author about any other HK stars than his current subject. They are also jarring and not particularly relevant.

Jet Li, a gracious, spiritual man would certainly not approve of this type of cheap shot. Likewise Parish's insistence that Chan and Chow are somehow Li's "rivals" is strange. Chan has long since carved out his unique comedy niche, Jet Li is forming his own as a martial artist ... action star--and Chow Yun-Fat (who will cheerfully tell you he is NOT a martial artist, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon notwithstanding,) holds the distinction of being the first Asian star who has broken into Hollywood on the strength of his acting alone. Different strengths, different men, none better than the other.

While this may seem a minor point and isn't belabored by the text, it creates a subliminally contentious picture that can only serve to mislead the casual reader.

Otherwise this is a slick volume which can serve to introduce the casual fan to the life of a fascinating and talented man. Hopefully it will inspire neophytes to Asian cinema to explore more of the literature devoted to HK cinema in general, and its crossover stars in particular. Once so directed, they can then form their own opinions about all the parties in question.

This is a fascinating look at, not just an action star, but at the prolific Chinese and Hong Kong film industries. Through the life of Jet Li, we see his rise through this colorful industry. There is also a fascinating look at his boyhood in a China dominated by Mae Zedong. Even if you are not a martial arts movie fan, this is an enjoyable book. It is very well researched, including a background on Wushu, the form of martial arts practiced by Jet Li. There are many excellent photos and a complete filmograghy. So read the book, then hit the video store and see some movies that are often overlooked or relegated to the b-movie bins.

The popularity of any monarchy shows peaks and troughs. But when Henry Ponsonby became Queen Victoria's private secretary, her popular image was in such hopeless disarray that even Victoria herself came increasingly under attack. As her private secretary and protector at large, Ponsonby realized that the court had failed to adjust to a shift in the media and political sentiment. Dramatically rewriting the royal message as her most intimate adviser, his ironic take on the monarchy left it in its strongest ever position when he died fifteen years later. This entertaining biography paints a seldom seen, intimate picture of the inner workings of the monarchy. William Kuhn received unparalleled access to the Royal Archives and those of the Ponsonby family. While insider material on the monarchy is hard to come by, Henry and Mary Ponsonby wrote to each other regularly and wittily about the day to day events at the court, and its strategy for survival. Their vivid letters deal with such timeless issues that they could have been written by the Queen's advisers today. Abbreviations Acknowledgements Illustrations Preface Chapter 1.
