Customer Reviews:
Planned my entire vacation - great reference.......2006-01-06
My husband and I took a 18 day trip from Sydney to Cairnes, and used this book for almost all of our motels/B&B's, etc. We were looking to budget less than $100/night for rooms, and all the recommendations in this book were spot-on. The maps of towns are okay, but you'll want a full-size map to get around with and figure distances, too.
I could not have written a better one myself....well, maybe........2003-10-31
This book is perfect for seeing the east coast of Australia by car, but will work just as well if traveling by bus, moped, etc. A friend and I had been planning to drive the east coast, visiting national parks and doing lots of hiking, so when I saw this book I knew it was perfect. As with all titles in the LP family, it lists many places to stay/eat based on price range, which is really nice when you are traveling on a limited budget. There are many hikes listed in the book, along with museums, oddities, and points of interest along this 'classic overland route.' My only complaint about the book is that I wish the authors had listed traveling distances between major cities at the beginning of each section, so the reader doesn't have to add up each little segment on the maps. Otherwise the book is very complete.

Good information, illustrated by stunning photographs........1998-06-14
If you are into bats this is the book to own. Mainly about the bats of Europe, although bats from further afield are mentioned, this book deals with every aspect of the life of bats. It is explained in depth without scientific jargon. The best thing of all are the photographs, the reproduction is second to none, high gloss pictures and illustrations make it look as though the authors have stuck their own personal photos in it. When I first saw this book I just had to have it for the pictures alone. The quality text was just a bonus.

Book Description
Here is a fresh crop of Charles Elliott's pungent, funny, and thoroughly unpredictable essays from that heartland of horticultural fanaticism, Great Britain. Ranging from deeply felt reflections on stinging nettles and giant hogweed to an examination of the English gardener's obsession with privacy, these essays demonstrate once again why Elliott's columns have so delighted readers of Horticulture magazine - along with many others without a trowel to their name. Like his first collection, The Transplanted Gardener - called "delectable" by Allen Lacy in The New York Times - The Gap in the Hedge explores British gardening past and present, as well as some of the odder byways into which a love of plants and gardens has led us. There are accounts of such great plant-hunters as Reginald Farrer and Joseph Rock, master gardeners like Ellen Willmott and Canon Ellacombe, and the undeservedly obscure scientist Jagadis Chunder Bose, whose improbable specialty was research into the emotions of plants. Here too are essays on the difference between gardening and groundskeeping, topiary, mistletoe, orchids, waterlilies, the history of hoses, and much more. Altogether, The Gap in the Hedge is a rich and vastly amusing assembly destined to please anyone interested in Britain, in gardening, or simply in human nature at its least commonplace. Book Description
This book contains a collection of 18 articles written by the author in the last 30 years on methodological, terminological and historical problems concerning the field of his discipline at Leipzig University, namely Religious Studies. Some articles are rewritten, others only revised or complemented. Much influenced at this University in considering the field of Religious Studies as an area based primary on history and philology, independent of theology and philosophy, this work focuses a.o. on terms like Myth, Mythology, Demythologizing, and Syncretism; on subjects like Mohammed, the relation between Jews, Christians and Muslims; and on leading figures of the discipline in past and present. An introductory essay provides the autobiographical considerations, necessary for a good understanding of the collection.

It wouldn't be entirely unfair--or necessarily a criticism--to call this anthology "Biography Lite." Not that the authors or protagonists of the 85 books it covers are by any stretch of the imagination lightweights. Such distinguished scholars as David Herbert Donald and Nell Irwin Painter share space with respected popular historians like David McCullough and Doris Kearns Goodwin; those profiled include no fewer than 23 American presidents (from George Washington to Bill Clinton), such intellectual heavyweights as Albert Einstein, and capitalist titans on the order of John D. Rockefeller. Since the material is drawn from interviews the writers gave on the popular C-SPAN series Booknotes, however, it unsurprisingly tends to be "brief and anecdotal," as Lamb (the show's host) puts it in his introduction. Still, the anecdotes are often hilarious. Readers learn that Rockefeller chewed each bite of food 10 times and that British prime minister Margaret Thatcher saved the leftovers from state dinners and served them at home, and the interviewees do a commendable job of summing up their subjects' significance in very few words. Like the television program, Booknotes: Life Stories cheerfully promotes in a pleasantly populist manner worthy books you might actually get around to reading someday. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Conversations with the most admired biographers of our time on the people who have forged our contemporary landscape
C-SPAN founder Brian Lamb invites readers into a virtual conversation -- via the art of biography -- with the legends and luminaries who have helped define America. This informal dictionary of biography peers into the personalities who have left a mark on our world -- a Who's Who of American history, and the next best thing to chatting directly with the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Walt Whitman, Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt, J. Edgar Hoover, Elijah Muhammad, Amelia Earhart, Katharine Graham, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Frank McCourt, Bill Clinton, and many others.
Based on C-SPAN's popular weekly Booknotes program, this absorbing collection of life stories presents illuminating profiles and often surprising details from our favorite biographers. Booknotes follows the evolution of American history chronologically, and covers the lives of writers and thinkers, inventors and scientists, politicians and soldiers. Lamb reacquaints us with the great figures of our times, in an engaging conversation about America.
Customer Reviews:
What a great teaching tool - nice biographical vignettes.......2004-03-26
I am one of those who loves Booknotes and Book-TV and feels a real loss when my schedule keeps me away from them (yes, I can pick them up on the C-SPAN websites, but it just isn't quite the same). These books are just one of the additional reasons some of us refer to Brian Lamb as Saint Brian. The chapters are digests of the information gleaned during the actual Booknotes broadcasts. Each one is from an individual author and in this case, it is on the lives of famous Americans.
There are something like 80 to 85 of these biographical vignettes. Some of them are autobiographical when the author being interviewed about their book was also a notable American in their own right. We all know Mr. Lamb's unique style of quantum interviewing (one can never predict the precise location of his next question). These edited and assembled pieces have a somewhat more organized and focused feel, but there is still a bit of the Cooks Tour approach to each subject.
Having watched many of the shows from which these articles were made and also having read several of the books by these authors, I can still say that even when the material here is familiar it is still fun to dash through because it is so concisely presented and decently edited. When the material is unfamiliar it is very delightful and an invitation to more study and investigation.
I am not only happy to have this dandy book, I am actually grateful for it. It is a marvelous tool for introducing children to biographical subjects!
The book also has an index and a list of all the Booknotes programs through the publishing date of the book.
A great place to start.......2000-02-18
Though this anthology does in no way substitute for the biographies themselves, the book points you toward wonderful biographies of famous and important Americans. A bit uneven , exerpts range from unsatisfying (George S. Patton), to appetite-inducing (George Custer), to concisely authoritative in themselves (Eleanor Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson). Certain omissions, such as Douglas MacArthur, scream out, while inclusion Anita Hill but not Clarence Thomas seems woefully outdated.
An impressive compendium that belongs on your bookshelf.......1999-06-11
Brian Lamb, host of C-Span's Booknotes, has pulled together a collection of short, enjoyable, highly personal biographical glimpses into the lives of famous Americans - political notables ranging from John Adams to Lincoln to Edison to Bill Clinton.
Booknotes Life Stories contains more than 75 four-to-eight-page profiles, reflecting the informed, entertaining, and controversial opinions of scores of leading biographers and historians, as told to Lamb in his decade of Booknotes interviews.
While other available biographical references are more detailed, the charm of Booknotes Life Stories is its tendency to cut to the chase, presenting only the relevant points of the historical figure's life in an informal, enlightening, and sometimes irreverent style.
This impressive compendium belongs on the bookshelf of writers, history buffs, students, teachers, politicians, and those who just plain enjoy a good, educational read. (Reviewed by Angelo Parra, award-winning writer and dramatist, who also writes and edits personal and family memoirs.)
Nice to meet you.......1999-04-14
The origin of this book weighs rather heavily on its content. Some of the pieces are a bit superficial and many tell less about their subject than one would have wished. On the other hand, this book is a great opportunity to get acqainted with people you would not ordinarily read about. Who would ever have thought that Henry Clay was a funny person to be with or that Paul Revere was not the only one on the road that famous night? And there are many surprises: I ,for one, didn't know that Sojourner Truth's first language was not English but Dutch( she grew up in the Hudson Valley). Among the pieces that dig deeper are those on Whittaker Chambers and Harry Truman. For every reader this book will have its eye-openers and discoveries. It does best what it was meant to do: getting you to read more books.

Irish Childhood.......2006-02-12
"In this highly original genre-defying book, the author remember her childhood in Dublin in the 1930s and 1940s as a poor Protestant living among even poorer Catholics. She tells of her strange home in the gate lodge of Jonathan Swift's hospital for the insane, and of her increasingly strained relationship with her devoted but undemonstrative father. Reading was her salvation, and in novels like Jane Eyre, Hard Times and Anna Karenina she found her own inarticulate experience better understood and better expressed. Pithy, illuminating commentaries on the emotional truth of great literature alternate with chapters of strong personal memoir to make this unique book as universal in its reach as it is individual in its telling." "This is not a book of fluff or feel-good case studies. It's a handbook for organizational change. The instructions are specific, potential pitfalls are highlighted, and the appendix provides a detailed discussion of outside evaluation tools." -GREEN MARKET REPORT
"The Sustainable Company offers some genuinely practical insights into what it really takes to improve stakeholder impacts." -ETHICAL CORPORATION
"Laszlo endeavors to translate social and environmental concerns into the language of marketing and corporate strategy...well-meaning executives will find much food for thought here." -PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
"What Mr. Laszlo calls 'Planetary Ethics' or the integration of economic, environmental, social and high ethical objectives into long-term business strategy, is the new price of entry for corporate survival. Those who 'get' this and do it best will enjoy increasing shareholder value. I believe this book carries a critical message for today's corporate executives."-DEBORAH D. ANDERSON, PH.D., FORMER VICE PRESIDENT, ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY WORLDWIDE, THE PROCTER & GAMBLE COMPANY
The Sustainable Company shows how to create value for shareholders while balancing responsibilities to society and the environment. Its step-by-step approach and tool-kit for managers make this book the solutions manual for the twenty-first-century manager.
Customer Reviews:
Worst book ever written?.......2007-04-26
This may be the worst book ever written. The "arguments" are not only circular, but contradict one another. Terms are poorly defined and lack continuity. The focus for change is inappropriately placed on the business side of the business/consumer relationship. I'm dumber for having read it.
informs as well as it entertains.......2006-09-08
Chris "CC Storm" Laszlo has done it again! Another best seller that informs as well as it entertains. He makes compelling arguments promoting environmental sustainability via fuel cells operating on a Slim Jim and Mellow Yellow mixture rather than Hydrogen. The author is no doubt a briliant business and social strategist, but he is a really nice guy, good looking and available too! I can't wait for the sequel coming in December: "Son of Sustainable Company". Happy reading!
A great primer.......2006-05-31
This book is an effective primer on this important cultural trend and is divided into three parts:
(1) The basic ideas behind sustainable development and value
(2) Four examples of sustainable companies
(3) Some business tools for creating and measuring stakeholder value
In Part I, Chris Laszlo presents the key concepts, history, importance of developing an increasingly conscious, sustainable and responsible business. He covers all the major elements of sustainability (such as triple bottom-line, various stakeholders, measurements, ethics etc.) but in language that does not reduce these exciting topics and trends to dull, academic abstraction. Most interesting is Part II on successful corporate models of sustainability (such as Patagonia clothing, ARCO) which give a real human face to the concepts. Many managers will find most useful the charts, graphs, models for creating, communicating and managing an effective sustainability program. Its not an MBA-level of detail, but a solid, conceptual starting point that will be appreciated to those newer to these ideas. However, I found his language a more academically labored in Part III, reducing its effectiveness to engage. Other popular books on the topic worth reading are "Natural Capitalism" and "Cradle-to-Cradle."
The business value of sustainability.......2003-10-03
This landmark work helps managers assess the business value of sustainability. Many companies are keen to show that they are responsible corporate citizens. They are taking lots of actions on the environmental and social front, but have no idea which ones are important for their businesses. This book offered me a structured management process for thinking about "stakeholder" value-at-risk and value-opportunities. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a set of practical guidelines to integrating stakeholders into their company's core activities. It helped me to make the business case for greater corporate responsibility in a language that other managers could understand

A simple, practical guide to help not-for-profit organizations lobby local, state, and federal legislative bodies
Only a fraction of not-for-profit organizations take advantage of the legislative process in representing their members and their organization's goals. Yet lobbying is an important way to gain visibility, attract members, and find new sources of funding. This book is designed to help the modern not-for-profit develop and implement an effective lobbying program without jeopardizing its tax-exempt status. Dr. Pidgeon and the contributers he has assembled provide in-depth analysis of all the major issues of the lobbying process, including:
- The basics of lobbying
- The structure of local, state, and federal government
- Using the mass media to spread the message
- Political action committees (PACs)
- Marketing and communication strategies
- Strategic partnerships
- The legal aspects of government affairs and lobbying
- When and how to use outside consultants
- A strategic, step-by-step plan for success
A CD-ROM with a wide-ranging array of tables, forms, and checklists as well as a complete model strategic plan is included. When used in conjunction with the CD-ROM, The Legislative Labyrinth is a comprehensive guide that explains and simplifies the process of developing and maintaining an effective, efficient government affairs program. This wealth of wise and insightful advice will help executive directors, board members, consultants, and lobbyists find creative, effective ways to earn the attention their organizations deserve.

For Beatle Scholars.......2005-08-07
This book is sure to delight those who have extensive knowledge about the Beatles. This book has fresh, new information and provides sources for quotes. Nothing is left as vague "hearsay." This author has done his homework!
In addition to citing all sources, this author clearly knows his Beatle history and follows it thoroughly. The choice of photographs are startlingly apt; the photo on the back of the book showing the locked gate to Strawberry Fields (kind of makes you think of George's song, "Behind That Locked Door") signifies the end of the Beatle Era; a bittersweet note. This very compelling book is worth adding to your Beatles' literary collection.
A Great Second-Tier Reference.......1999-11-05
If you are searching for a good biography on the Beatles, I'd steer you toward Davies, "The Beatles." This book, however, is excellent supplement to primary reference biographies such as Davies and contains some outstanding insights from George Martin and others who played critical roles in the development of the band.
A delight from start to finish, Great Stories and people!!!.......1999-06-07
Best Beatle book, PERIOD!!!
The Beatles in the words of those who were there!.......1999-03-16
Here you will find The Beatles story straight from the mouths of the people who experienced it! A thoroughly enjoyable history. Put on a Beatles album. Turn up the volume. And sit back and enjoy.
Amusing gems.......1999-02-03
This is not a definitive story of the Beatles, but rather a collection of insightful quotes from primary sources about every phase of their careers. My only historian's regret is that we do not find out when or where most of these quotes were taken from. Good stuff nonetheless. An alphabetical table of participants is helpful.

Book Description
Hannah Szenes grew up in a loving home filled with books, plays, and music. Unfortunately the rise of the Nazis in her native Hungary forced Hannah to emigrate to Palestine, where she became an ardent Zionist pioneer. Haunted by the murder of the Jews by Hitler, she risked her own life to become a resistance fighter, vowing to save as many Jewish lives as possible.
Customer Reviews:
A Hero to Remember.......2000-04-11
Hannah Senesh is the symbol of virtue, valor, and compassion. She risked, and lost, everything she ever had to save others. This book deserves an accolade of praise, and should be recommended to young adult readers. Not only does it give the reader an understanding of this dark time in history, it also presents a sense of hope. For even in the darkest of shadows, there is a light like the Hannnah Sensesh. Highly recommended!
