Product Description
A landmark work for teens chronicling the Second Seminole War (1835-1842) and the treachery of the U.S. during that time. A ragged, starving handful of guerrillas, the Seminoles and blacks resisted the invading U.S. Army ten times their number. Meltzer explores the Seminoles' choices and the sacrifices they made by resisting in the longest and costliest of the Indian Wars. The book reveals America's terrible racial history, the consequences of which we are only beginning to understand.

Tells of a desperate struggle by a vastly outnumbered people.......2004-07-17
Drawing its title from a Seminole's leader words in 1842, "I have been hunted like a wolf and now I am about to be sent away like a dog", Hunted Like A Wolf: The Story Of The Seminole War is the riveting true account of the costliest of America's Indian Wars, in terms of both money and human life. Award-winning author Milton Meltzer tells of a desperate struggle by a vastly outnumbered people attempting to retain the land they lived upon. The Second Seminole War was also as much of war over slavery as it was over territory, for living among the Seminole were black men and women - some runaway slaves, some free - ready to lay their lives on the line for those they considered to be brothers. Thoroughly researched, and written in plain terms directly accessible to the lay reader, Hunted Like A Wolf examines not only the events of the war, but its legacy, and the motives of those who pushed so hard for it. Hunted Like A Wolf maintains as much impartiality as it can when describing lynchings, the raw greed for land, the desire to enslave black people, and the funneling of national wealth into the coffers of a state's private militia. In the end, Hunted Like A Wolf proclaims that the Seminole wars - which ultimately removed the vast majority of Seminoles from their ancestral lands, and instilled a pattern of ruthlessness that would poison American government for an era to come - stemmed directly from, in the words of American senators, "A continuous desire to exploit and expropriate Indian land and physical resources and a self-righteous intolerance of tribal communities and cultural differences." Highly recommended.

Illustrates a sad episode of American history that all children should know.......2006-07-02
In this story, Night Bird is a young Seminole Indian girl hiding from the white men in the Everglades swamp. After years of pressure, her tribes had been forced southward from Georgia into the murky wetness of the swamps. Seminoles from all over are gathering for the ceremony of the Green Corn. It is a harvest festival where thanks are given and forgiveness sought.
However, in the middle of the ceremony, a new group arrives and it is revealed that they escaped from bondage and a white man was killed in the escape. All know that this means that the soldiers will be coming and they all will be at risk. They have hiding places prepared for the children and canoes ready for the escape. A canoe arrives and it contains a white man with a proposal that the Seminoles leave Florida and relocate to Oklahoma.
After he leaves, the tribe engages in a furious debate as to whether they should move to Oklahoma. It splits families apart, as the decision seems to be one between two forms of slow death. The story ends with a heart-rending tale of Night Bird being separated from the part of her family that is going to Oklahoma.
While this is a work of fiction, it is an example of the best kind; it could have been true. The only things that would be different are the names. The forced destruction of the Seminole nation is one of the worst examples of genocide in the entire history of the white destruction of the Native American societies. This book, written for the late elementary school child illustrates in an honest and yet non-bloody manner, what actually happened. While not pleasant to read, it is a side of the history of the United States that children need to be exposed to.

"So many promises, so many lies . . . [the treasure] has to be left with people of good hearts. Please, be my storytellers."
An elderly Seminole woman leaves Ashley and Adam with these haunting words and an old pouch. So begins the Arlingtons' vacation in Florida, a trip they thought would lead them to the beach but instead guides them on an unforgettable search for treasure.
When they open the pouch a mysterious, fragile document points the way to Florida's fascinating and multicultural history. The Arlingtons learn of Ponce de León's, Osceola, and others as they search for clues to the document at the Everglades National Park and the De Soto National Memorial. As they gather pieces of the mystery, the siblings discover they may be holding evidence of what was, until now, only hear-say.

Gaah! Disgusting!.......2007-09-25
The content of this book is appalling. Hedren and her husband are apparently vapid, self-indulgent, stupid, and spoiled Hollywood ninnys with more money than common sense.
Hedren encountered big cats on a film set. Bedazzled by their exoticness, she and her husband accumulated and warehoused nearly 100 animals. Hedren is totally ignorant and oblivious of the animal cruelty involved in this.
It is just plain wrong to keep a wild animal for a pet, even if it is beautiful. The big cats are not domestic, not loving, and Hedren has scars to prove it. It can only be ego gratification. "The big cat community" discussed supports poaching and extinction in the wild by maintaining demand for these "pets".
Avoid this book at all costs.
Moving, wonderful story.......2001-07-12
In The Cats Of Shambala, actress Tippi Hedren details the often harrowing history of her association with big (and I mean lion and tiger big) cats. From her first meeting with one, to the collection and saving of cats from various untimely fates, to the many trials and disasters endured during the filming of the ill-received movie, ROAR, through her establishment of The Roar Foundation (a permanent preserve out in Acton, California), she weaves an entralling tale of love for these animals. Many of the big cat subjects we meet here take on interesting and colorful personalities. There's more depth to these big cats than in many characters in today's popular novels!
Moving, absorbing, inspiring, riveting, and never, never boring. You come away with a new appreciation and respect for big cats after reading this book.
Big Cat Chaos!.......1997-11-26
Have you ever dreamt of raising a lion or tiger in your house as a pet? As a throw back to the Joy Adamson and "Born Free" era I dared to dream that dream, and came to the unfortunate realization that there are no books on the subject, until, that is, I found "Cats of Shambala". It is an insightful, funny, and sometimes heart wrenching look at life among the big cats, and what its like to share your home with them. It certainly brings home the reality of the chaos that is caused by these majestic creatures, and anyone reading it would certainly do well to live vicariously through Tippi and bring the book home rather than the cat! For those of you, who like me, have found yourself living with any of the exotic cats as pets, I'm sure you'll find this book answers many of the questions you've been asking.

A must-read for beginning gardeners.......1998-12-08
Serious gardeners need many kind of books, but one of the very first everyone should have is Elsa Bakalar's "A Garden of One's Own." She demystifies gardening so that a newcomer such as myself learns quickly how to do the many tasks that other books consider too rudimentary to explain. Her obvious talent for teaching is invaluable, and having her book at your side is almost as good as having a gardening tutor next to you. I refer to it often, and recommend it to anyone who gardens.

Finally a Biography Fit for the Greatest Voice of All Time.......2007-03-17
Maestro Cesari has done a wonderful service to all those who search for truth about the exciting, magnificent and tragic life of Mario Lanza. His marvelously researched work is splendid and is meticulously documented with facts and figures. What emerges is a clear separation of the man, the myth and the artist. Lanza is not glorified in Maestro Cesari's book. Instead the author creates a mosaic which portrays a tenor who wanted to sing for the people and bring classical opera to all as well as give endless pleasure through his glorious renditions of popular music. It also shows a great perfectionist who knew that he possessed a sacred gift to leave for posterity. Anyone who listens to his finest recordings will understand why five decades after his death millions still listen to him and fan clubs and societies to promote his memory and music span the globe.
Testimonials, carefully documented, by the best and brightest performers of Lanza's generation gave clear evidence that he was the greatest tenor and perhaps the greatest singer of all time.
This is an excellent book and all those who seek a real portrait of Mario Lanza owe Maestro Cesari an enormous debt of gratitude. He devoted decades to preparing this wonderful work and it deserves rave reviews.
Someday a fine movie will be made about Lanza, along the lines of "Amadeus" or "Ray" that will depict the great voice and the great man who possessed it and cared for it enough so we can still enjoy it today.
Bravo Mario and Bravo Maestro Cesari!!
Lanza Takes Your Heart Out And Controls It.......2006-03-22
I am neither music critic nor literary critic. But let me just say ... When Lanza was focused, when he was free to be an artist, when he wasn't destroying himself, there was and is NO one better. And fortunately "Lanza at his best" is NOT a rare thing! Go listen to his work (you can start with the CD in this book, which is worth the price of the book and MORE). Yes you have to ignore some "bad" stuff (musically and personally) he did, but if his magnificent voice and artistry (which does exist OFTEN) doesn't grip your heart and soul if you let it, I suspect not much really does.
The critics can say what they want about artists like Callas and Lanza, but it is their ilk that demonstrate that the words do mean something, and that "passion is the only truth, all else is lies!" Lanza was a gift to the world, yes a flawed one, but a true gift none the less. Others that may have had, or do have, more critical acclaim and/or popular followings, more often than not, cannot come close to bringing you to where Lanza brings you.
I just received the book yesterday so I'm not finished reading it. However so far it's a very good read. And by the way, if those "flattering quotes" aren't true, well they should have been, and only one's feelings of being embarrassingly bested would have prevented their utterances.
A MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-30
WOW, I must say this book Mario Lanza: An American Tragedy (Great Voices) (Hardcover) by Armando Cesari sure ends depressing (but most of the book is a wonderful and fun part to read) and really does show what a great Tragedy both Lana's life and death was and is; (and the ending must be read to get the whole story). I knew of his untimely death and all the myths surrounding his life and death; but I did not know the real story. I just knew I love his voice, the power, the beauty, the range, the breath control, he was just terrific; Maybe the best singer of all time. Read Ceserir's Bio of Lanza and his family you will get his history and also more, you can see how and why he never fulfilled his promise of being a great opera star; and with his talent he could have, arguably, been the best. Ceseri uses quotes extensively of those who know Mario, well, both family friends, actors, singers, hangers on, etc., in relating the events of his life. He also shows the criticisms both good and bad, and he shows why many of the bad ones were unfounded. Ceseri shows how those who really knew music, and opera more so, were enthralled with Mario's voice. he dispells the Myths of any doctoring of Marios voice by RCA, and also dispells the myths of the hollywood rumor mill. At the same time Ceseri shows us all side's of lanza, he does not pull any punches, and he gives us a balanced view of lanza's life, the good and the bad. I would highly reconed this book to anyone who wants to know the real story of Mario lanza.
THE CD that comes with the book is fantastic!!!!!
More of a Tribute than a Biography.......2004-10-05
After having read other books about Mario Lanza's life and death, I must say that while this book is very well researched and very detailed in it's content, it doesn't quite live up to some of the rave reviews presented here.
There are a number of shortcomings with this book:
1. Mr.Cesari seems totaly taken with his subject and shys away from all but the most necessary mention of Lanza's infamous habits and less than complimentry antics.
2. The author spent entirely too much time presenting meaningless facts and trivial details (license plate # of the hearse carrying the tenor's body, draft registration # etc) which in turn makes for less than exciting reading of the entire book.
3. The overall picture presented of Lanza is that of a hapless victim of circumstance with little will or power to control his own fate. Blame for the tenor's fate is shifted to any and eveyone from his accompanist/conductor Costa Calinicos, his managers, his wife, on to the various powers at MGM and beyond.
At no time does the author hold Lanza directly responsible for the ill-fated decisions that led to the tenors' early demise.
Good points about the book include a vast photo collection which is by and far the most extensive offered in any of Lanza's biographies to date and the enclosed CD which is interesting since the song selection seems to try and demonstrate Lanza's operatic genious to his detractors rather than present his best renditions of the arias he is most closely assiciated with.
All in all this book is more of a loving and welcome tribute to a great artist and complicated man than an objective and all encompassing biography of an American icon.
Reclaiming Mario Lanza's Greatness.......2004-08-29
Cesari's book is a reclamation project: it is a successful attempt to reclaim Lanza's artistic legacy in a world that clings furiously to a false dichotomy between art and entertainment. It was an implicit acceptance of this conventional dualism that tore Mario Lanza's soul in two, and that lies at the base of the tragedy that Cesari describes. Despite unfulfilled promise, Lanza made an indelible mark on music, becoming, in effect, one of the first great "crossover" artists, who has inspired generations of singers, across genres, challenging the musical snobs of his time who sought to denigrate his remarkable achievements. Bravo to Cesari, and to the subject of his biography.

Book Description
Why are we here?
How should we live?
What happens after we die?
Why does evil exist?
Religion For Dummies explains how the world’s great religions answer questions that persist through generations. Authors Rabbi Marc Gellman and Monsignor Thomas Hartman are trusted religious advisors known as the God Squad. With wonderful wit and incredible wisdom, they host a daily talk show which reaches nearly 4 million homes in the New York area, and have appeared on numerous TV and radio shows.
This book is not a scholarly theological treatise; it’s a lively, practical, hands-on resource that will help you better understand your own religion and others. You’ll explore:
- Religion's role in the family and in the workplace
- The beliefs and practices of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and other religions
- Religion's impact during major passages in life such as birth, death, and marriage
- How to join a religion and how to pray
- How religion can help you deal with issues in every day life such as conflict, adversity, marriage, divorce, and more
- Religious rituals and ethics
Religion for Dummies touches on lesser-known religions (such as, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Sikhism). It explores how people of various faiths pray, celebrate life and death, and view moral issues. The book does not tell you what to believe, but rather encourages you to live as you believe and let your religion infuse every aspect of your life. It doesn’t give simple answers to haunting, complex questions; it helps you find your own answers and pursue your own spiritual path!

About one member of the "God Squad".......2005-04-22
Rabbi Gellman and Monsignor Hartman are quite a team. Overcoming barriers, showing how Christians and Jews can get along in quite a jolly way. Except that there seems to be an ugly and bigoted underside to the dynamic duo. I just heard Rabbi Marc Gellman on the TV commenting on the election of Pope Benedict. He closed with the witty remark that he didn't think that "being Torquemada's successor" was the best qualification for being Pope. Isn't ecumenism partly about increasing mutual understanding and dispelling falsehoods and stereotypes? The fact is that Pope Benedict is no sense the successor of Torquemada. Ratzinger was Prefect of the "Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith". That body was created in the 1960s after Vatican II to replace the "Holy Office", which in turn was the historical successor of the "Roman Inquisition". Torquemada was the infamous head of the Spanish Inquisition, an insitution completely distinct from the Roman Inquisition in its origin, structure, and methods. It shows great historical ignorance to confuse the two. Moreover, as a young theologian Joseph Ratzinger famously called for the abolition of the "Holy Office". By recklessly tossing about vicious and unfounded allegations against the character of the head of another religion Rabbi Gellman shows himself to be a sometime ecumenist. Shame on him.
A difficult subject.......2004-09-14
This book is taking on an enormous subject and has made a brave effort at giving a brief explanation of many religions and more details on Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
BUT! and it is a big but... in trying to give more information on just a couple of faiths it fails to give a proper, balanced, realistic picture. For example: the Christianity side heavily emphasises the Roman Catholic beliefs - the different Protestant beliefs are but lightly touched on and Anglicanism (Church of England - which is one of the world's biggest Protestant churches) is not mentioned at all. Some of the information is rather odd: for example it is claimed that Protestant Christians rarely celebrate the Eucharist. Well, not in my experience: in the UK most churches celebrate it several times a week!
The same criticism can be levelled at the description of Judaism: reading this book one would never guess how radically different the various Jewish groups are (and how much they are often daggers drawn too). And ditto Islam.
I accept that I am going to see this book differently from an American reader but I could not see why the other religions were so lightly touched on. In the UK there is a substantial population of Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs: I had expected this book to give more information about these faiths and to expand my knowledge of them. It didn't. This book is too heavily orientated towards 'The Big Three' and there are other, better books that cover these.
I was pleased to see that Native American faiths were lightly touched on and a hint was given about Australian Aboriginal beliefs.
As I was aware from my own studies of several spectacular errors and a lot of small misunderstandings (which I accept are inevitable on such a subject) I became doubtful of the veracity of a lot of this book and did not feel that it expanded my knowledge of religion one iota. Why was the book not written by persons of the various faiths and then edited to match the 'Dummies' format rather than wholly written by a Rabbi and a Catholic Priest? The different faiths are not dealt with in separate chapters but mixed up all together: following a thread to get an overall picture of one religion is not particularly easy or obvious.
This book has made a brave attempt to cover a huge subject but the accuracy, detail and layout fail. Still, it would give someone with no knowledge of any faith to get a vague idea of what is what.
Should be required reading - in my humble opinion.......2003-07-11
First of all, I'm not a reader, but I was compelled to purchase and read this book after "The God Squad" appeared on Imus in the Morning on WFAN/MSNBC. I'm glad I purchased the book and here's why: This book breaks the major religeons down to fundamental basics that the layperson can understand. After reading this book, I'm surprised there isn't more religeous strife going on in the world due to the sheer differences in beliefs and theological structures.
I've always been fascinated by religeon, especially since I am of the scientific/realist wing. I am, however, glad I spent the hours I did digesting this material. For the few bucks it costs - not a bad bargain.
I know other reviews are much more eloquent than this, but I wanted to toss my two cents in and give this book a "thumbs up"!
A Handy Reference.......2002-11-29
If you are looking for a theology course, you'll be disappointed but if you have questions about the world's major religions, Rabbi Gellman and Monsigneur Hartman have done a fine job providing the answers. Those reviewers critical of the authors' Judeo-Christian viewpoint are forgetting something - these guys are a Jew and a Christian. You expected them to write from the perspective of a frog worshiper?

Book Description
By the age of four, Paddy Doyle's mother had died of cancer, and father had commited suicide. He was detained in an industrial school for 11 years, where he was viciously assaulted and sexually abused by his religious custodians. After 3 years, he was taken to a hospital and left there, never to see his custodians again. So began his long round of hospitals, mainly in the company of old dying men, while doctors tried to diagnose his condition. This period of his life, culminating in brain surgery at the age of 10, left him permanently disabled. This title is the true story of a survivor, told with a lack of bitterness for one so shockingly and shamefully treated.

The God Squad.......2007-10-04
This is the fascinating true story of a little boy who through no fault of his own is incarcerated in one of the appalling Irish industrial schools in existence in Ireland until 1970. He suffered physical, emotional and sexual abuse and as if this were not enough, he was then taken by the nuns of the industrial school and left to spend years of his precious life in different hospitals where he appears to have been no more than a guinea pig and was left with a permanent disability. Up to this day, no-one within the system has accounted for the brain operations, his eventual disability or any reason why he was in the different hospitals.
The book is very well written and although it describes the horrors inflicted on a small child, the sadistic treatment he received in the hands of the nuns, one can sense a healthy resignation which comes across every page thus making the unbearably sad story a little easier to read.
I found the book an inspiration, an ode to life, for after the total deprivation of affection, protection, a simple toy even, and having had his life taken away from him and practicaly destroyed, he not only survives with sanity but he wins in a superhuman way as he tells with such dignity about the perverse system under which he and so many other children were detained.
It must have been very difficult to relive the horrors whilst writing this very informative book. And for such an effort, I am indebted.
A book before its time.......2007-04-24
When The God Squad was first published in Ireland in 1988, the Irish public were confronted with the reality of life behind the walls of religious-run orphanages and industrial schools. However, perhaps because it was seen as just one unfortunate boy's story, there was no general sense of outrage directed at the perpetrators or at the system which allowed supposedly 'religious' men and women to ill-treat children entrusted to their care. That had to wait until another expose by the journalist Mary Raftery eight years later.
But Paddy Doyle broke the silence and for that we must all be grateful. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the real Ireland of the recent past. Paddy tells his story eloquently and without self-pity. The God Squad will break your heart. Read it.
The God Squad.......2005-08-29
Excellent and a very good read. I have read a few books about Ireland's Industrial Schools and saw the movie "The Magdeline (sp?)Sisters." All are helpful in understanding what the children Of Ireland's Industrial Schools went thru. Although Paddy only wrote about his experiences in "The God Squad," I feel great love and compassion and sadness for these children as well as a sense of great strength coming from them as adults to have the courage to tell their tales. God Bless every one of them and hope that they can find a sense of release and closure from the pain by letting the rest of the world know their stories.
The God Squad.......2003-08-18
"The God Squad" by: Paddy Doyle is an extremely well written book that took me through the whole range of human emotion. I laughed, cryed, was angry and happy as the author led me through his life from 4 1/2 years old through the epilogue. It is a book that I could not cast aside to finish later.....the 236 pages were rapidly devoured in a few hours. I recommend it very highly to everyone. The education, alone, is very well worth the price that one would pay for ANY book!....No wonder that it was a best seller in the United Kingdom. It will hit the USA in a big storm too!
This Book Is Not Out Of Print !.......2000-10-04
I know this book is not out of print because I ordered it and read it in one day. Any intelligent reader knows that the mark of a good writer is the ability to write masterful, engaging narrative, and Paddy Doyle tells the story of his young life honestly and directly. It is this straightforward essential truthfulness which will keep your attention from page 1 through the epilogue. Of particular import in this literary journey is the challenge to see that the beauty of life is not there because of or in spite of what one survives, but because the human spirit, so brilliantly demonstrated in the Irish spirit of Paddy Doyle, is a fire that cannot be damped down. It's also a fine example of what happens when the church and state relationship gets too cozy; something we Yanks take for granted won't happen. Point and click your way to owning this book, it *is* available!

Book Description
At last! A sharp and sexy satire that skewers the absurd methods used by the ex-gay movement to make gays go straight.
In this hilarious send-up of ex-gay treatment programs, a young man named Paul joins Escape, run by the Reverend Sly Slocock. While trying to convert other gays, Paul meets Jimmy, a feisty antagonist from Homo Nation, who sets out to undermine Sly's increasingly bizarre attempts to cure Paul's homosexuality.
The God Squad is a racy, romantic comedy spiced with irony, intrigue, and forbidden passion. By exposing the fraudulent hypocrisy of ex-gay ministries, it also provides a refreshing antidote to the religious right's campaign against gays.
