Book Description
The Pacific Coast has long attracted adventurers, explorers and environmentalists. From the early beginnings of coastal voyaging, which began with Native paddlers in large canoes and foreign explorers under sail, to modern travellers in kayaks, skiffs and private yachts, exploration has always been an integral part of life on the coast. Boat Camping Haida Gwaii, written by a modern-day explorer with environmental interests, is a practical guide for coastal explorers interested in a weekend off-shore adventure or a major expedition to remote and wild areas. With information on ancient native settlements, hidden campsites and everything in between, Boat Camping Haida Gwai offers a fascinating - and comprehensive - look at the wild beauty of the Queen Charlotte coast.
Boat Camping Haida Gwaii is the definitive guidebook for people interested in camping by boat. The book features a wide range of detailed maps of the Queen Charlotte coast, along with numerous photographs, offering a clear sense of the geography - and the majesty - of the area. Detailed descriptions are given of each campsite and special appendices are provided with helpful hints on bear safety, tides and currents. The book also contains information about the history and culture of the Haida, the indigenous people of the Queen Charlotte Islands.
Intended to serve primarily as an on-board reference, the book can be opened flat, and used in conjunction with the Global Positioning System (GPS) and chart references. Its compact size ensures the book can easily fit in kayak cockpit storage sleeves, or tossed in a backpack for day trips. It fits perfectly in zip-lock storage bags for waterproof protection.
This guide's comprehensive information will be valuable to kayakers, canoeists, those in small motorboats and everyone interested in exploring this unique area. Yachters and sailors willing to go adventuring in their skiffs will also find this guide helpful in exploring Haida Gwaii -- as will armchair adventurers.
Customer Reviews:
A must for all lovers of the Queen Charlotte Islands.......2005-10-06
Also if you are not a sailer or not going by a kayak, this is a beautiful and great book for all lovers of these islands. I spent recently one week there and this book would have been an
enormous help for planning the trips. Beside the technical information about kayaking, the book contains a lot of
very interesting information about the history, the people, nature etc. Every time I open and read in this book, far away again from this paradise, all my impressions and pictures are
reviving. Should I ever have the chance to go again to the Charlottes, I would put this book at first in my suitcase.
Review by a Resident of Haida Gwaii.......2001-11-11
As a longtime resident of this beautiful & remote North Pacific archipelago known as Haida Gwaii, I enjoyed Neil Frazier's guidebook very much. It is extremely informative in matters of interest to travellers in this unforgiving marine wilderness, the hard facts of survival. As well, the author shares his thoughts on the ongoing rape of the ancient forests of spruce & cedar for which the Queen Charlotte Islands are famous. His maps are accurate & current, his directions are lucid & easy to follow, and his advice is worth heeding. Very few of Haida Gwaii's 5000 full time residents have been to half of the places that Mr. Frazier has visited. And the author's extensive knowledge of the human history of these islands is evident throughout the text, and is usually reflected through entertaining anecdotes about Islands residents, past & present. The indigenous Haida people especially are portrayed in a romantic light that stirs the imagination. All in all, the book does what a good travel guide should do- it inspires me to want to load up my boat, and head off on an extended boat camping journey of my own, and to once again marvel at the endless majestic beauty that is to be found in every corner of Haida Gwaii.

Much more than maps.......2001-10-19
"Boat Camping Haida Gwaii" guides readers not only through the waterways surrounding the Queen Charlotte Islands, but also through the history of the region, and the policies that continue to degrade these coastal areas. The guide is filled with detailed maps as well as pointers about where to land and where recent clear-cuts preclude camping. Even if you don't own a boat or a tent, you will still find the author's discussion of the past and possible future of these islands to be a useful guide for thinking about the fragility of the few "wild places" that are left, and about the price of ignoring the long-term effects of deforestation and overfishing.
A marvelous comprehensive book.......2001-09-06
This is a trip which my husband and I have always wanted to take. With Frazer's book, we feel confident enough to try it (hoping for good weather) The maps and descriptions of the area are very detailed and clear. The personal anecdotes and history enliven the book and make it an unusually readable travel guide. We appreciate the warnings and safety tips as well as the excellent bibliography and index. Congratulations to the author.

novice book.......2001-11-28
when starting out in aquaria, interests widen and curiosity can get one in trouble. impulse buying is normal and questions arise with every passing day. this book is a quick reference and easily affordable (5 stars) for that first time catfish purchase. everyone graduates to the larger and more in depth books but this is a great starter reference!
This book tried to cover alot but covered very little........1999-01-18
This was a interesting book that gave some information but missed the mark by trying to much with to little. It is a good reveiw of some common species and touches on some which are never seen or can not be found. All in all it was of very little use.Plus alot of the information was in question or was contrary to other publications.

Book Description
"Carefully styled photographs and plenty of good advice illustrate excellent ways to prettify and personalize your home outdoors."--Minneapolis Star Tribune
Country Living's experts know how to furnish a garden as beautifully as any indoor room-and these creative outdoor settings will enhance any backyard. Vintage textiles, ornate iron gates, colorful wheelbarrows, fanciful folk art sculptures: they all appear in magnificent photographs, offering design inspiration. The ideas can be as simple as tossing a few pillows on a garden bench or chair, or as elaborate as an entire garden room with a glass-topped stone capital for a dining table, medley of lanterns, canopy of tree limbs as a natural "roof," plus other appealing plants and accessories that add color and texture. Every exquisite page is a revelation.

Slim pickin's.......2004-10-12
This book had few ideas, none of them noteworthy. I have been trying to find good infomation on landscaping and garden design and found this worthless.
Helpful book!.......2001-07-31
This book is very much like something Martha Stewert would put out. I liked that fact, being I'm a big fan of hers I just had to get this book. This book will help you out so much with your decorating problems. For example if your can't figure out how to set up your backyard for a wedding or a party this book will give you lots of helpful tips. I loved this book and you should too, so get this one if your having trouble decorating and even if your not you should still get it for some fresh ideas.
Book Description
This beautiful and unique reference provides an unrivaled mine of inspiration and ideas for anyone wishing to create a colorful new look for their home or garden! In this stunningly produced guide, internationally renowned interior designer Kevin McCloud puts together over 1,000 color chips arranged in over 80 palettes. Each palette-which includes anywhere from 6 to 16 color swatches-forms a blueprint for a unique decorative scheme. A palette based on old Chinese silk, for example, is seen reinterpreted in a contemporary New York apartment. Plus, each palette features gorgeous photographs that bring the color scheme to life, along with invaluable advice and tips for using the colors to transform a room. Readers will also find manufacturers' paint references and numbers, lists of suppliers, and much more. The ultimate color sourcebook!
Customer Reviews:
Great help for anyone choosing paint colors.......2007-08-17
This was exactly the book I was hoping it would be. It truly helps you choose colors from the popular brands of paint available. I was most interested in colors for a room with only a northern exposure. Every color I tried seemed to turn green on the walls. This book was extremely helpful in this regard. The only reason I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5 is the same reason others have commented on. The paint colors used in palette 28 and 29 were omitted from the reference guide in the rear of the book. It covers blue which is most people's favorite color so the omission is significant. Fortunately, for me, blue is my least favorite color.
good book.......2006-11-06
I used this book before painting each room in my newly purchased apartment.
I am very happy with the colors and received compliments from friends and family.
My husband is also very happy with the choice of colors.
Excellent color resource.......2006-05-18
This book is a great resource for choosing colors - especially if you have difficulty choosing and putting colors together. It provides information as well as inspiration. The pictures are beautiful.
Won't help.......2006-03-25
Even thou I'm a professional Interior Decorator, this book doesn't give me much info I don't already know, also the colour samples are missing the manufacturer names and numbers to be found in stores. Yet the credits do mention which companies were used.
Everyday home decorator won't find any help from this one.
Two stars for the pretty pictures.
This one did not work for me........2006-02-05
I think this book might be helpful for the professional interior decorator. It was just not what I was looking for in a color book. Each section generally starts with a page or two of colors squares, i.e yellow or yellow-orange. It then describes the color (A very 1950's yellow, warm and dense. Look at it with only the colors below and the three to the left). These pages are then followed with photos of rooms using some of the colors. The entire book is arranged this way. The red rooms are almost completely red (page 5-6) and very few of the rooms were my particular taste or style. Some of the color palettes that were used together seemed more jarring than coordinated, except when the author got to the more sedate, calmer colors (pg, 32, 38).
I prefer the BH&G - Color Schemes book which has a more realistic and useable color palette and presents them in beautifully decorated rooms. Again, this one might be more useful to the professional decorator, but for me it was too much text and history.

Book Description
As Blair Warner on The Facts of Life, Lisa Whelchel matured from a snobby prep schooler to a responsible adult. Now the actress recounts the journey she's made in real life, from a shy, small-town girl in Texas to the glamorous life of fame and fortune in Hollywood -- and finally to suburban life as a pastor's wife and homeschooling mother of three. Poignant autobiographical stories reveal the developing trust in God that has enabled Lisa to grow in grace through seasons of pressure, pain, and prosperity.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2004-09-11
This book basically told the story of Lisa's life, from her childhood, to acting, and then about her marriage and parenthood. The chapters were well broken down into various aspects of her life, with her telling us what God has taught her at the end of each chapter. I loved the humor in the book, especially the words of wisdom from Lisa's mother.
I can really relate to her..........2004-07-13
This book was a great read, and I have learned things from Lisa that are actually helping me get through the days. I didn't want to put it down until I finished it, and I want to get a copy for all my friends. She may have been a star, and she's different from me in plenty of ways. But she's also so much like me as a Christian woman, wife, and mother. When I'm having a rough day, I just remember reading about how she went through something similar and how she got through it, whether it be a major life struggle, or just dealing with my kids when they're having a particularly bad day.
I went to one of her Mom-Time conferences a couple of months ago, and there I learned that Lisa is so down to earth. The book shows that about her even more. It has been such a blessing to me already, and it's a book I plan to read at least once a year.
Wonderful book!.......2004-05-07
This book was awesome....it was funny, entertaining, but also very spiritual and uplifting. I've been a huge fan of the TV show "The Facts of Life" since I was very young, and adored "Blair". Lisa Whelchel is a wonderful writer and I highly recommend this book.
The Facts of Life And Other Lessons My Father Taught Me.......2004-02-12
This book is a great insperation for my friends, family and myself. I have shared my copy with a choosen few who have said that something in the book helped them with a problem they were having at the time. I would tell anyone to read this very enjoyable book.
One of the Best Books I've Read!.......2003-12-30
If you want a good read, and it's a Christian book, check out "The Facts of Life and Other Lessons My Father Taught Me", written by Lisa Whelchel. As you may remember in the 1980s, Lisa played "Blair" on the TV Show "The Facts of Life", and is now married to a pastor, with 3 children.
I actually grew up watching that show, along with "The Cosby Show".
This book Lisa had written is actually an autobiography about her own life, and what God did for her. It consists of her being saved at age 10, when she entered the Mickey Mouse Club, her thoughts and then asked to not be in the episode when Natalie (on "The Facts of Life" show) had premarital sex, when she had her wedding, her kids, and many more. It also tells the reader about the miracles and blessings God has given to Lisa and her family. This is not an "In the Face" Christian book...this is a honest, down-to-earth book written by the actress herself.
There is one excerpt that I really like reading about in her book. She learned that she can have a "no-food" diet (she use to binge when she was younger), just by eating everything she wants for the next two weeks, set her alarm clock every morning and spend time with God before she goes to work. Lisa said that then her hormones evened out, and she lost the baby fat. She also lost the emptiness she tried to fill with food. I thought that was really neat!
Personally, I think Lisa was a very good actress as "Blair" during the "Facts of Life" run, and I think she's very talented...it clearly shows in this book. :) This book is highly recommended!
Book Description
Originally published to much acclaim in 1980, this is the story of the legendary German battleship that sunk the pride of the Royal Navy, HMS Hood, on May 24, 1941, and three days later was hunted down and sunk by the British during one of the most dramatic pursuits in naval history. Told by a German naval officer who witnessed both sinkings, the book chronicles the brief but sensational career of what was thought to be the grandest weapon of the Third Reich. Burkard Baron von Müllenheim-Rechberg, the Bismarck's top-ranking survivor, tells the battleship's story from commissioning to the moment when the captain gave a final salute and went down with his ship.
The epic battle between the two great enemy ships captured the imagination of an entire generation and became a popular subject for movies and songs. With the discovery a few years ago of the Bismarck's sunken hull off the coast of France, worldwide attention has focused again on the famous ship. Reprinted now in paperback for the first time, the work presents the human dimensions of the event without neglecting the technical side and includes information on rudder damage and repair, overall ship damage, and code breaking. The book also provides insights into the author's life as a prisoner of war in England and Canada and the friction that existed between the Nazis and non-Nazis Germans in the camps. Such a personal look at one of the most famous sea encounters in the history of World War II makes absorbing reading.
Customer Reviews:
great insight on what happened on the Bismarck.......2007-08-01
I did like the narrative and it gave me a glimpse into what went on inside the Bismarck and her crew. Many of the photograhs were a first for me. I especially liked Appendix D, "The Rudder Damage: Were all Possibilities of Repair Exhausted?". Apparently the Bismarck was doomed from the start, but this may have been hindsight on the part of the author.
As for Appendix F "A Break in the Code", the tome was written before information was released indicating that the British were indeed monitoring most, if not all, communications of the Kriegsmarine. I refer to the two volumes of "Hitler's U-Boat War" by Clay Blair. The Americans were also monitoring the movements of the Bismarck, possibly in violation of international law.
The only reason I gave the book 4 stars is because the author related his opinions on the politics and his superiors possibly after the war. I wonder how he thought during the war. Too many apologies for the Nazi regime for my taste. I agree that the regime was inefficient. This may have been common among many authors who were involved on the German side looking back.
I would recommend this book in addition to the several books that have been written on the Bismarck in the last few decades.
A standout in the crowded field of historical memiors.......2006-08-17
V. Mullenheim-Rechberg executes brilliantly where others have failed. This is one memoir where the author maintains a confident balance between his own personal history and the larger event in which he took part.
Make no mistake--this is his story, yet one where the ship and its crew reamin the focus. An understanding that he was but one, small aspect of each seems to guide his writing throughout. Moreover, he is careful to call out what he can only qualify as recollection and what he has culled from the established historical record. The result is a practically seamless recounting that should satisfy readers who seek personal insights into the short operational history of the Bismarck and those who crave details on the ship's construction, crew composition, and blow-by-blow accounts of Dennmark Strait and the final attack that lead to its ultimate fate.
His chapter describing the last minutes as the crew abandoned ship take on a downright cinematic feel. The clarity there is of moments he could not shake and of people he would not forget. It's deeply personal, yet he provides both himself and the reader emotional breathing space by weaving in views of the operational action around the ship itself. This intensifies every personally-infused vignette that he presents and ensures that none are lost in the wash of mass human loss.
The author makes particularly handy work of his footnotes, sometimes using them to personally answer some of what he believes are significant misnomers about the ship's history--and his own. The footnotes are clearly -his- space, and he does not hesitate to answer some of what he feels are personal attacks that various other authors have made on his character and conduct. Still, he shies away from pettiness and cheap indignancy here. His tone is measured throughout, and he exactingly cites the sources that fuel his commentary--leaving the reader a chance to further explore the issues. After all, he was a lawyer and diplomat after the war. It shows.
Recommended highly for those who enjoy their history presented in a narrative fashion.
WELL TOLD TRUE STORY OF AMAZING PROPORTIONS FROM THE HIGHEST RANKING SURVIVING OFFICER ABOARD THE BISMARCK.......2006-05-26
FIRST THOUGHTS: EMOTIONAL WAR DRAMA OF LEGENDARY STATUS
The Bismarck, like the Titanic before her, went down on her maiden voyage in the North Atlantic with a great loss of life. Though both ships went on to become legends, the Bismarck was one that went down via the concerted effort of a large portion of the British fleet. Due to its being the flagship of the third reich and symbol of its 'superior' achievement the mission to destroy the Bismarck was a vital necessity to the British and a desperate race for survival for its German crew. In the end, there is little to feel good about the sinking of a vessel with over two thousand men aboard, only 115 whom were saved. Worse still, this tragedy followed the sinking of the Hood by the Bismarck just several days earlier with just a handful of survivors from the Hood. All in all a very nasty business, but an epic piece of real human history.
IN A NUTSHELL:
Battleship Bismarck: A Survivor's Story (Bluejacket Books)
by Burkard Baron Von Mullenheim-Rechberg, is another fine 'Naval Institute Press Publication' and a terrific account of the Bismarck's short life. The author, Burkard Baron Von Mullenheim-Rechberg was first, Captain Lindemann's adjutant and later the gunnery officer in charge of the aft range-finder. His rank was 'Oberleutnant zur See', or the equivalent of Lieutenant, in the US Navy. Von Mullenheim-Rechberg was on board before the beginning and was there after the end to become a prisoner-of-war. Both before and after are included in his expanded accounts in this "THE NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION - 1990".
WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT:
Von Mullenheim-Rechberg takes us on-board the Bismarck as he is introduced to his new commanding officer, Captain Lindemann. It is 1940 and he is the Captain's adjutant as fitting out and trials get under way for the newly launched super-dreadnought. These prelimary maneuvers are included in detail. Von Mullenheim-Rechberg does give us insights into his Captain, Lindemann, Admiral Lutjens [fleet commander] and something about Adolf Hitler who did visit the ship. All three men will play an important role in the story that unfolds.
BUT THE STORY DOESN'T END THERE -
A lot happened to the Bismarck its crew, the Hood, and the world in less than a week, and much of it is covered within this volume, first hand.
The real mission of the battleship Bismarck.......2003-05-06
The author, and one time adjutant to Captain Lindermann, the commanding officer of the Bismarck, reveals the real mission of the battleship which is a new concept to most. It was very exciting to read the details from the beginning of the battleship including the sailors and officers, the training, and sailing to the Atlantic. Although it would have been nice if even more details could have been included, but perhaps space and memory prevented it. The author did mention that most of his experiences and service had to be written from memory since he was prevented from recording classified and secret information. Particularly interesting is his description and feelings of being a POW inside the POW camps; his repatriation, a person returning to his defeated homeland, once a proud nation, and how a former POW can fit into the new and recovering society. Lacking many technical details that we would liked to have read about, this is still an excellent book. To be able to read about the battleship from the German side of the ship and war, is invaluable. Excellent book and highly recommended.

Battleship Sailor.......2007-01-09
This is a very well written book about an enlisted man's life in the US Navy before and during World War 2. It really detailed all aspects of Theodore Mason's time as a Navy enlisted man aboard the USS California. It was interesting and exciting to read.
He was there.......2005-09-28
This is an excellent first-person account of the life of an enlisted man aboard an American battleship before and during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Mason, a professional writer, writes from the point-of-view of his youthful self. His writing is organized, logical and unforgiving toward those he feels let him down as a sailor or as a man. One of the best first-person accounts of life in the old Navy, where form was more important than function.
Fascinating behind-the-scenes look.......2004-01-27
This is a great look at life in the Navy just before the outbreak of World War II. Mason provides unique insight to a world that has been obscured by myth and movies over the past sixty years. It really gives a sense of a sailor's life in the old Navy, and his revisitation of the Pearl Harbor attack is simply riveting. A must-read for students of naval history!
My Dad was a shipmate at Pearl.......2003-06-07
My Dad was assigned to the USS California from 1936 until she was sunk on December 7th. The book reads just like the stories he would tell. My Dad past away Nov 2002. He spent 30 years in the Navy and most of the stories he told were when he was on the "Prune Barge". He played football and baseball on the ships team. I always wondered if the sailor Mr. Mason spoke to when he was touring the ship when first assigned was my Dad - he was a MM3 - "snipe" - worked in the engine room. It sure did sound like a response my Dad would give. One of the sailors awarded the Medal of Honor, Robert Scott (Zeke) was my fathers best friend on the California. They were "Battleship Sailors".
An excellent first hand account of the Pearl Harbor attack.......2001-05-12
I really enjoyed this book. There is sure to be a massive wave of new found interest in the suprise attack on Pearl Harbor and the events surrounding it due to the upcoming movie, and anyone who wants to get a feel for what it was really like to be there on the deck of a battleship dodging bullets and bombs, this book is unequaled anywhere. What really makes this an outstanding book is not just the gripping account of the attack itself, but also of the time period just beforehand. Mr Mason does an excellent job of relaying the false sense of security and invincibility that we as Americans held before we were thrown headlong into the most savage and trying war in the history of mankind. Mr Mason's portrait of the life of a sailor in the days of the pre-war "Old Navy" is something to be treasured and preserved especially now that our population of veterans from that period is inexorably fading. I thought that the author could ease off on some of the "50-cent" words, as constantly having to consult your dictionary can interfere with your enjoyment of this book. Overall, a great read, and a must have for anyone interested in Pearl Harbor or naval history.

The U.S.S. Oklahoma during the Pearl Harbor raid........2004-02-08
The author-Stephen Bower Young-served as a gunner on one of the main turrets of the battleship U.S.S. Oklahoma. He was aboard the ship when she was torpeodoed during the surprise Japanese attack. This story is about his personal experiences during the December 7, 1941 attack and the escape from the ship when it rolled over.
Young offers recollections about the life aboard the battleship and the sailors he served with. Many of these sailors would not survive the attack (448 died).
The majority of the book was about the attack and the subsequent escape. I was most interested in Young's successful escape, when other sailors drilled holes into the bottom of the ship so those trapped could escape. A most interesting read.
A "must read" for you and your kids.......2001-06-04
This book is absolutely spellbinding. Once you open this book, you won't be able to put it down. The impact of this first-hand account of being trapped inside the capsized hull of the battleship USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor is resounding. Buy it for yourself but share it with anyone upon whom you wish to impress the courage of what has come to be called the Greatest Generation. The next time you hear someone complaining about how tough they have it (perhaps your kids or grandkids whining about not having the coolest sneakers or the latest Nintendo), give them this book to read. Perhaps the reality of how pampered our current lifestyle really is will sink in. I suspect this book will also help you put your own problems in perspective as well.
A good story, and very well told.......1999-09-19
The author recounts his days in the pre-WWII navy with candor and affection. Honest without being coarse or too sentimental, he talks of his experiences and shipmates, good and bad. The account of USS Oklahoma's sinking and his later rescue is thrilling. I read it in one sitting.
