3 out of 5 stars Not comprehensive, but a good overview.......2007-04-09

Although I must agree with the reviewer who said this guide should not have been advertised as a "comprehensive" one, it does offer a good overview of many different careers that involve pets. Many jobs are ones that would not normally cross the average pet-lover's mind, such as pet photography. Sure, the book is not so much business-oriented as an overview. But for someone who loves animals and is in search of a meaningful career working with them, it certainly provides food for thought and can act as a springboard from which to do further research into the potential career of one's choice.
            - Nicole Wilde, author So You Want to be a Dog Trainer (2nd edition) and Help for Your Fearful Dog: A Step-by-Step Guide to Helping Your Dog Conquer His Fears

            4 out of 5 stars Not a bad book........2005-03-03

I like this book because the author covers a lot of ideas that one may not have thought of. For example: Becoming a Pet Paramedic and operating a Pet Retirement Home. They're plenty of books that covers insurance, and business setup, such as business plans. But regarding the pet career books out there, I found this one quite refreshing.

1 out of 5 stars The Incomplete Guide to Career Success with Pets.......1998-08-24

This book was a disappointment. Its subtitle is "A complete guide to starting your own rewarding career with pets", but this book is far from complete. It fails to mention some of the most basic considerations, such as liability insurance. While none of the advice was way off base, the danger of this book is that someone may read it and get an oversimplified idea of how easy it is to start their own business. I think that the books also glosses over the experience and education required to start some pet related businesses; for example, the section on pet training suggests that people who have, ". . . a general knowledge of working with animals. . ." may wish to start this type of business. The author never mentions that it would be beneficial to have experience training animals, to have taken a training course, or to have any real, relevant experience. Encouraging people to leap before they look is a disservice to them and to any customers they may have.

                        Book Description

An informed and thorough treatment of Druze history and beliefs that helps elucidate this religion's enigmatic religious identity.

As a small sect that emerged from Islam over a thousand years ago, the Druze religion and society has long been cloaked in a tradition of secrecy. Veiled from the outside world, the religious tenets have been vulnerable to distortion, misunderstanding, and misrepresentation. In this book Dr. Anis Obeid, a Druze layman, provides a penetrating analysis of Druze scriptures and beliefs (Tawhid). Presenting a chronological narrative of the foundation and development of the faith, he explains the historical conditions and religious rationale behind this closed religion.

The Druze faith is the product of Abrahamic monotheism as it coalesced with other philosophies, belief systems, and political structures of the West and the East and, as Obeid maintains, should be recognized for its core monotheism, and not fundamentally different from Judaism, Christianity, or Islam. He argues convincingly, with examples and translations from the Druze scriptures, only now accessible to a non-initiate public, that Tawhid is a progressive and dynamic spiritual process based on freedom of choice. This rich exploration of their faith, the author's appeal for a sincere cultural dialogue will resonate with a wide audience in the West and in the Middle East.

In the first complete account of the Druze, Robert Brenton Betts provides a general survey of the history, traditions, and society of this secretive Arab sect. Betts, who has spent a great deal of time with the Druze, interweaves his firsthand observations with a wealth of primary and secondary sources, describing not only their thousand-year history but also their political significance in today's Middle East. "A deeply informed, brightly written account of the Druze that will be read with profit by students of Middle East history, politics, religion, and anthropology as well as by everyone with an interest in Lebanon, Syria, and Israel."-Michael C. I find this book an objective and encompassing account of a fascinating people. Betts includes excerpts from many references on these people and explains the political and historical context of each statement. He then adds his own perspective from in-depth research and first-hand personal experience. It is concise but covers the subject extensively by addressing historical, social, political, and traditional aspects of it with an interesting section on Druze Women.

5 out of 5 stars History, first hand.......2007-02-13

This is a rather extraordinary eyewitness account of the turmoil in Lebanon from 1840 through 1860, under Turkish rule.

The book is a graphical reproduction of Charles Henry Churchill's account, published in a 1,000 copy run in London in 1862. Despite the 283 page length, the type is large, so it's possible to read this volume in one sitting. It would be considerably shorter in a smaller, modern font.

At the outset the volume gives an interesting background on the Druze faith, though some details from Medieval sources seem rather implausible.

But for its account of the 19th century, the book offers first hand, extremely graphic descriptions of a turgid conflict between the Druze and Maronites, instigated by Turkish rulers, who were eager to regain control of their empire after groveling for European support, and reluctantly implementing reforms at European behest.

Apart from the routine humiliations imposed on Christians and Druze alike by Turkish rulers, the book also gives a remarkably frank description of the political manipulations that initiated the strife, and the complete disinterest with which the Turks watched the resulting conflict rage.

This little book is by no means all encompassing. But it does offer an excellent, eyewitness window onto the events in Lebanon from 1840 to 1860.

                            Book Description

Originally published in Arabic less than a year after the outbreak of the Lebanese civil war in 1975, this is the first English translation of Mahmoud Khalil Saab's Stories and Scenes from Mount Lebanon. Saab's meticulously narrated stories and accounts of people and events in the "small beautiful country," as he liked to describe his native land, convey the character of life in Lebanon as only someone who experienced it can do. Saab traveled around the country by car to interview people who had lived events or heard of them from their elders. Reading his work, it is clear that his central purpose was to preserve for posterity the narratives he had witnessed and heard during his lifetime, feeling that if they went unrecorded they might be lost forever and with them the values they relate. Anyone with an interest in the values, customs, and heritage of the people of Lebanon, and particularly the Druze, will want to read this book.

I am an American of Lebanese descent. My Family is Druze but i never knew what the faith was about having grown up going to a southern Babtist Church. This book was recommended to me by my relatives in Lebanon as the most accurate and well researched of all the books regarding the Druze. It was a quick read and very well done. If you are a serious student of the Middle East - Israel, Syria and Lebanon in particular - this is a must read.

                                  3 out of 5 stars What is a Druze?.......2000-08-04

While living in Lebanon during the civil war I became facinated by the Druze fighters I encountered during my assignment. I was completely ingnorant of the Druze religion, the people and their history. I located Makarm's book in a local book story and devoured it over a weekend.

I had found the Druze to be the most hospitable, friendly but fierce fighters during the war. Their devout faith and social customs out-shone the other sects and revealed a people truly content with their faith, culture and postion in life. Happy.

Makarm's book was like a road map to the notion of Druze spiritual development and faith. Very readable and enriching no matter your faith. Worth the time.

This is by far the best autobiography I have read so far. It was an easy read and extremely expressive. In many ways it is disturbing if you think of what the character goes through. The explicit racism, abuse, pain that Assata had to endure is decribed really well. You get to in fact life in her era, in her life when you read this book. I literally could not put it down and read it in 2 days.

It pretty much gives you and idea of how things were in the 70's, what black people went through especially women, what the black panther party was really all about, the dirty system we call law, explicit racial comments and treatment etc. If you like stuff like that, then you'll love this book.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Eyes opening..........2007-01-10

Wow...When you read this book you feel in another era , in another world but the sad part is that is not, it is our world and what hapened to this woman was real.I recommended to everyone regarding your ethnic gropu, but specially to blacks and whites in this country.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Read.......2006-06-24

The real history of the Black Power Movement will seemingly never be truthfully covered by mainstream historians.

But that doesn't mean the misconceptions and dirty lies should be repeated time and again to those interested in the ongoing struggles by persons of color. You know the drill; when it's said a topic/person is not important or much too radical then it simply is a footnote to history.

And Assata: An Autobiography is a great point to start that sojourn or to continue gaining knowledge from a person passionately involved in the revolution.

Assata Shakur's message cannot be read as simply an historical piece that has no relevance today. By doing so, the reader will miss the bigger picture that Shakur presents. The times change, but the struggle continues.

                                  5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-05-16

The story of Assata Shakur is deep and motivating, after reading the story of her journey I was surprised at the amount of people that had no clue of her story. This book is a great read for everyone, this book will make you think and want to learn so much more. I am so happy that she was able to tell her story.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Must read!.......2006-02-01

The book was great. I felt like using a highlighter during numerous points in the book.

"The less you think about your oppression, the more your tolerance for it grows. After a while, people just think oppression is the normal state of things. But to become free you have to acutely aware of being a slave."

this quote meant a lot to me. Its so true that many of us (including me) have become so passive in the treatment we are subjected to. We must constantly remind ourselves of the injustices because "this" is not normal.

Assata dropped numerous names I was unfamilar w/ so I made a list and I am going down it little by little and getting some background.

There is so much we all dont know. And of course if we rely on "America" to enlighten us we will be clueless for the rest of our lives. And seriously I closed the book numerous times just to think. There is so much to be done and if we could all come together to organize so much progress could be made.

Margo Perkins does a pretty good job at showing her readers the activism with in each of the political autobiographies (Davis, Shakur and Brown). She gives the historical as well as the political situations that sparks these black radicals to write their stories in order that they might set the record straight and speak out against what the government and regular citizens have said about them that was not true (well, not Brown). All though Dr. Perkins' book was good in that it educated her readers, I felt as though she spent a little too much time telling us that Brown fabricated her stories and distorted her facts. I thought that chapter could have been condensed. But other than that it was a good book. You'll definitely walk away much smarter!

College-level students of black history will find this an important study of women and activism, providing a portrait of three black women of the sixties (Angela Davis, Assata Shakur and Elaine Brown) who were the only activists to have published book-length autobiographies. Her study of their books provides an important exploration of activists and biographical writing.

“Any analysis of the American Black experience demands close attention to both the political and the personal, and this extraordinary memoir by Williams … offers just that, as well as making a noteworthy contribution to recent American legal History.”

“Becoming a Children’s Court probation officer … she contended with the political pressures of placing the children of Ethel and Julus Rosenberg … In the early 70’s, the author took on her most important case, defending her niece, Assata Shakur, “leader” of the Black Liberation Army.”

The bicentennial of the failed United Irish uprising against Britain, in 1998, is a fitting time for the publication of a biography of Irish revolutionary Lord Edward Fitzgerald. The distinction between Fitzgerald and his co-rebels is his title. While his compatriots were composed primarily of middle-class barristers and solicitors, Fitzgerald was the son of the most aristocratic of Anglo-Irish families, one which, during the Middle Ages, had essentially ruled all of Ireland. His older brother was Duke of Leinster, his mother, the daughter of one of England's great Whig families. Fitzgerald, himself, began his career in a traditional fashion, joining the British army as a career officer and fighting during the American Revolution at the battle that forced Cornwallis's surrender. After his stint in North America, Fitzgerald returned to Europe where he roomed briefly with Thomas Paine in Paris. At a public dinner celebrating the French victory at Jemappes, he offered a toast to the abolition of all titles and vestiges of feudalism--earning him the designation "le citoyen Edouard Fitzgerald." While in Paris, he met his wife--the illegitimate daughter of the duc d'Orleans and his mistress--who, by virtue of her heritage, represented the dual elements that defined his own life. Shortly after returning to Ireland, Fitzgerald joined up with the already burgeoning revolution and rose quickly through the ranks because of his name and military experience. But the revolutionary ranks were rife with informers and double agents, and on the eve of the planned uprising, Fitzgerald was captured and mortally wounded.

Like his previous biographer, Irish Romantic poet Thomas Moore, Stella Tillyard draws liberally from Fitzgerald's correspondence. Through his letters, which she quotes throughout the book, he emerges as a charming, witty, and genuinely affable character. The one failing here is that most of the surviving letters are those he wrote to his mother, so he is somewhat guarded about his politics and related activities, which form the most interesting element of his character. Still, Tillyard does an excellent job of vividly describing the environment in which Fitzgerald moved--evoking a clear sense of her subject and his times. --Jordana Moskowitz

                                      Book Description

From personal letters and other sources, Stella Tillyard has re-created the life of a headstrong young aristocrat who died a martyred rebel for the cause of Irish independence. Lord Edward Fitzgerald joined the British army as a teenager, but radical sentiments soon prevailed over loyalty to the Crown. In North America in 1787, he spent time with the Iroquois; back in Europe, he became a disciple of Thomas Paine and joined the Irish underground. Even his love life was political-from his tragic affair with the wife of Richard Brinsley Sheridan to his marriage to the daughter of a French republican. Lord Edward was plotting for Ireland's independence when, as the bloody rebellion of 1798 raged around him, he was mortally wounded by British soldiers.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Lyrical History.......2000-05-08

In her writing,Stella Tillyard manages to span the difficult gap that separates fiction from non-fiction. Her style is lyrical - almost like a historical fiction - but without the emotive judgement. I find that it makes her books highly evocative and very easy reading.

However that should not lead people to think she has a flare for dubious tabloid presentation. She is quite ruthless in ensuring that her facts are correct, and in 'Citizen Lord' she has stripped away many of the romantic layers that have concealed the true story of Lord Edward Fitzgerald. These were myths that had been spread by Lord Edward's family following his death, and have coloured his story since. The stripping away of these layers makes this book no less interesting, indeed the true story still very much romantic and tragic.

A younger son of the first Duke of Leinster and his wife Emily, a daughter of the Duke of Richmond, Lord Edward was born into privelege and influence. Tillyard traces his gradual move from this life, to one of revolutionary in Ireland of 1798 without descending into either pathos or into judgement.

I was first introduced to Tillyard's writing with her first book, 'Aristocrats' which is also available at Amazon. I would recommend this book as also worth reading, and gives marvellous background to 'Citizen Lord' - it is about his mother, Lady Emily Lennox, and her three sisters.

I think Tillyard is a "Must Read!"

5 out of 5 stars Lord Edward, hero and mama's boy.......1998-10-03

You'll have to look elsewhere for a full picture of the catastrophic Irish rebellion of 1798, but Ms, Tillyard paints a lovely picture of its most romantic leader. I first heard of Lord Edward as a teenager, dipping into Yeats and reading Lord Edward's name linked to Wolfe Tone and Robert Emmet..."that wild delirium of the brave...". I have read numerous accounts of '98 since, but found little about Lord Edward in them, save for the melodrama of his arrest and death-an extra-judicial murder, if ever there was one.

So I am grateful for Ms. Tillyard's rendering of the man himself. She gives ample proof of the sweetness of his character, showing how his inborn beauty was nurtured and how it blossomed under the doting care of his formidable and unconventional mother. Their tenderness for each other lights what otherwise is a stark and tragic story. More significantly it gives the lie to the masculinist theory that maternal love weakens and "feminizes" male children. True, young Lord Edward had a "strong male role model"-his tutor, who was also his mother's adulterous lover!-but every step of Mr. Ogilvie's tutelege was directed by the attentive and indulgent Duchess of Leinster. The letters between Lord Edward and the Duchess make lovely reading for any mother concerned with the making of boys into men.

Of course, Ms. Tillyard includes the apparently obligatory expressions of horror about "political violence" a phrase used only in reference to Lord Edward's revolutionary enterprise, not to the ongoing repression and dispossession of the native Irish. Taken against the whole of the book, however, this is only a minor stupidity, one so ubiquitous in books about Ireland published since 1969 that Republican readers can pass over it without undue offense.

The main thing is that Lord Edward Fitzgerald lives on these pages as a beloved and loving human being, worthy of all the praise heaped upon him over the centuries. How often does a shining name in history still shine under close inspection?
