Book Description
For the businessman, newcomer, or visitor, "A Marmac Guide to Houston and Galveston" provides information on population, services, recreation, accomodations, restaurants, and main attractions.
Comprehensive information in an easy-to-use format on the area's past, transportation, lodging, dining, nightlife, entertainment, shopping, sights, and more highlight this volume. While Houston holds tight to its traditions, economic development and cultural diversity are rapidly molding it into the international city of the twenty-first century. And this newly updated edition is the perfect guide with which to explore it.
The list of attractions that includes the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Space Center Houston, the Astrodome, Six Flags AstroWorld, the Port of Houston, and the Downtown Pedestrian Tunnel System is essential for anyone seeking something new and fun to do.

GUIDE TO THE BAYOU CITY.......2006-05-12
For whatever reason this guide is not nearly as thorough as the Marmac guide to Dallas. Houston, though larger, seems to get the short shrift. Having said that the guide is well put together and most of the reviews hit their mark, but it does not have all the great gossip and trivia the Dallas guide has and frankly Houston has just as much dish. Houston is a great town, with lots to do and deserved a better tour, but if you need some history and a solid travel guide to H Town, then I do recommend this book, but Big D gets the better workup.

Book Description
This informative and easy-to-read book is the most comprehensive and current overview of the behavioral traits of horses and ponies. The book integrates the research of hundreds of international equine experts. Full references and carefully indexed, it is a most valuable reference for animal scientists, veterinarians, ethologists, horse trainers and horsemen. The text contains numerous tables, illustrations and photographs
Customer Reviews:
Good academic book.......2007-09-21
It is a very good book for college students, it is full of research references. However, the lay out is not fantastic, most of the photography, drawings and charts are the same as the first edition (1984) so the visual quality is poor. A bit dry, and the section about vices and bad habits is just a chart of listing them.
From Eventing USA Magazine, April/May 2003.......2003-09-04
"One of the people out there studying horses is Dr. Waring, a professor at Southern Illinois University. He uses big words such as polyphasic, but defines them, "The daily sleep cycle of horses is polyphasic, that is, with more than one period of sleep occurring per 24-hour period." He gives the academically correct citations of studies, yet describes the results in language the rest of us can understand. I dare any horseperson of any experience level to read it and not learn something."
Easy-to-Read..Packed with Useful Information.......2003-05-23
This is a great source book for veterinarians, students of animal sciences, especially those interested in animal behaviour and researchers needing a reference book. Every topic has extensive references from both the recent and older literature. If you want to know some fact about normal horse behaviour such as how long a foal suckles, duration of copulation, how much an adult horse sleeps - the experimental data will most likely be in this book. There are numerous tables, illustrations and photographs and a comprehensive index and bibliography.
The first edition of this book as published in 1983 and this second edition has been updated in every section. There are new sections on ecological influences on activity patterns, habitat utilization, social behaviour and reproduction. An expanded section on applied ethology and behavioural considerations for management, horse well-being and health is a useful addition.
The book is in seven parts consisting of three to five chapters. The index in the front of the book gives a clear understanding of what subjects are covered in each part. Part I covers the ancestry, special senses and motor patterns of the horse with a useful table on horse taxonomy and related species of living equids. There are detailed line drawings and definitions of all the motor patterns. In the discussion of the special senses, the horse's use of them is put into the ecological, morphological and physiological contexts. There is also detailed descriptions, including good drawings of the different gaits. Part II includes the development of behaviour patterns: play, post- and peri-natal development, learning, memory and often difficult to find data on foal development. The section on learning covers useful information on habituation, classical conditioning and instrumental conditioning (operant conditioning). Maintenance activities (resting, sleep, ingestion, elimination, comfort behaviours) are discussed in Part III. A term used that I found in appropriate, was `self-indulgent' to describe sunning, shelter seeking, licking, nibbling, scratching and rubbing - these are maintenance behaviours. An interesting section is included on the symbiotic relationships of horses with birds, such as cattle egre, and humans.
The section on reproductive behaviour (Part IV) is full of useful data which covers the sexual behaviours of mares and stallions and a detailed account of maternal behaviour. Both normal and abnormal behaviours are discussed. The stimuli that can affect sexual behaviour are commented on, including age, colour and sexual signals.
Social behaviour in Part V covers herd behaviour, social attachment, home range and territoriality, social dominance and agnostic behaviour. Mare-foal and foal-mare attachments are discussed and there is a small section on interspecies relationships. The excellent line drawings of facial expressions, head and ear positions add useful information. Part VI, the interaction of horses and their environment, includes an excellent section on the influence of native horses on various environments. However, the destructive effect of introduced feral horses in countries like Australia is not mentioned - this would have completed the discussion. The chapter on ecological influences and the effects on reproduction and social behaviour is a useful addition.
The expanded section (Part VII) on applied ethology provided behavioural considerations for management and insight regarding behavioural indicators of horse health and well-being. An appendix after this chapter categorizes many equine behavioural signs and possible problems they may indicate. The behavioural signs include facial expressions, posture, changes in motor co-9ordination, changes in maintenance behaviour and social behaviour.
There is no specific section devoted to behaviour problems -these are discussed in the appropriate chapters along with the normal behaviour. This arrangement works well and gives a good understanding of how the normal behaviour has changed.
This is an easy-to-read, hard-back book, packed with useful information written by an author, who not only has conducted research, but is also an educator. I am lucky to have it on my shelf - Associate Professor, Animal Behaviour and Welfare, School of Veterinary Science, The University of Queensland -- Australian Veterinary Journal April 2003
Recommend (to) all horse owners and horse professionals.......2003-04-05
Understanding horses' behavior is something that all people who own or work with horses want to be able to do successfully. Our own observations have taught us that horses remember their experiences and make associations that can stay with them their entire lives. George Waring, a founder of the Animal Behavior Society and an educator at Southern Illinois University, explores a horse's ability to learn and remember as well as examines all aspects of horse behavior in the wild and in the managed stable environment. Although written by an academic, Horse Behavior, 2e is an enjoyable and accessible book that takes the reader from the horse's ancestry to behavioral manipulation and everyday horse concerns.
I particularly enjoyed the sections on learning and memory and would recommend that all horse owners and horse professionals read Horse Behavior, 2e, if not in its entirety, than simply for these chapters. Waring has thoroughly researched the available data in this area (from the late 70s to the 90s), all which is beneficial to horse people working with (and building trust with) horses. Although worthwhile for all, Horse Behavior, 2e is a must for horse breeders, Waring presents a comprehensive study of sexual traits, behaviors, and anomalies in feral herds as well as at home in the barn. Horse Behavior, 2e is one of the first books that I have read that freely explores and identifies stallions' and mares' sexual behaviors and parenting patterns.
The first edition was published in 1983, the second this past fall. There are several new sections including chapters on horse management, ecology, habitation, and social behavior. I read Horse Behavior, 2e straight through, but each section stands independently and can be used easily as a reference text. The only downside to this book is that the photographs are not of the highest quality. Those photographs depicting feral herds are understandably insufficient but others illustrating animal husbandry could have been better and more numerous. That aside, I strongly encourage all horse people to give Horse Behavior. 2r a place of prominence on the bookshelf.
...
An excellent reference.......2003-01-23
Horse Behavior, 2nd edition, is a very well researched book that
addresses a through review of normal horse behavior. Dr. aring brings together references from a wide variety of disciplines, often from very difficult to get sources, and integrates them with his own research into a comprehensive picture of the horse. Each chapter is well orgainzed in its contents, resulting in a book that will be an excellent reference. This is a "must have" for any serious student of horse behavior and for those who just enjoy the animal.

Pretty pictures, AWFUL directions and specifications.......2004-08-18
The projects are beautiful, and if you just want to look at pretty pictures of furniture this book will deliver. Also, if you are sufficiently skilled--sufficient skill meaning that you are a lifelong professional woodworker--to duplicate a piece based solely on sight, this book might give you a few ideas for your next project. However, if you are anywhere in between--if you are a casual or hobbyist woodworker hoping to build these pieces, be forwarned:
1.) The book explicitly assumes ownership or access to an array of woodworking tools and equipment that would cost tens of thousands of dollars and fill a three-car garage.
2.) The descriptions and scant mechanical drawings misstate or, more often, simply omit critical dimensions.
3.) Directions for fabrication and assembly are jargon-filled and casually gloss over details that can be accurately inferred only by a furniture maker with sufficient experience as not to need the book at all.
Anyone who has ever been given driving directions which would only make sense to someone who already knew the route will instantly recognize the style of this book.
Well they look good........2001-05-16
I bought this book a while ago and thought it was wonderful - beautiful pieces! But then I actually tried to build one. MANY of the measurements were just plain wrong - to the point that the shelves wouldnt have been wide enough to reach the sides and the molding wasn't long enough to fit the sides and front. This may explain why they took it off the market so quickly - but disappointing nonetheless. Don't buy a copy unless you plan to redo the plans yourself!
A modern rendition of traditional Shaker style furniture........1999-05-23
It is unusual for me to find a furniture design book where I like one of the designs offered. Out of the 30 designs offered in this book, I can easily see myself building 12 of them. While not exact reproductions of any work, they are modern tasteful designs true to Shaker functional simplicity. Clearly the best of any Shaker book I've seen.

Simple Facts about Evergreens.......2000-08-16
This book is a true encyclopedia of Evergreen Trees and Shrubs. Unfortunately, it has very little information on gardening or transplanting Evergreen Trees, although "Successfull Gardening" is part of the book title. Additionally it makes no mention of the Pine trees most common in the Rocky Mountain region, the Lodgepole Pine, and no mention of the costly pest, the Pine Beetle, which are two of the reasons I purchased this book.
For the best gardeners.......2000-05-15
This book about the plants that you can use in your gardens. If you are a landscape architect or a student you can need this book in your whole occipation life. This book is about the trees and shrubs.
Praise for A-Z of Evergreen Trees and Shrubs!.......2000-03-30
I have recently purchased the aforementioned book, and have found it to be extremely informative. I am a new homeowner, the lot of the home that I purchased 1 1/2 years ago was completely barren, and I wanted to make it beautiful! I wanted year-round color, especially in my backyard, and this book provided me with many ideas for plant material that would accomplish this goal. In addition to beautiful photographs, there was additional information provided, such as plant maturity height, spread, best soil types, etc. This book will be a wonderful resource for years to come!
Product Description
The need for a new English version of Iamblichuss De mysteriis, an important attempt to give Neoplatonic theurgy a philosophical basis, has been a pressing issue for many years. This distinguished and reliable new translation by the team of Clarke, Dillon, and Hershbell, based on the excellent Budé text of Des Places, is a very careful and idiomatic rendition of the original and will certainly remain the standard and authoritative edition for years to come. Each page of the translation faces the corresponding page of the critical Greek text of Des Places. The book includes an important introduction and many helpful textual annotations. Every student of late antiquity will want to have this significant volume in her or his library.David E. Aune, Professor of New Testament, University of Notre Dame
Customer Reviews:
Exoteric Manual of Theurgy receives a much needed updating.......2004-05-05
Before this English translation of Iamblichus' only surviving defense of theurgy, scholars and those few others, curious about such matters had only Taylors' version to refer to. (While I am aware of A. Wilders' translation it suffers from far too many errors to be of much real value). Now Clarke, Dillon, and Hershbell have gifted us with what is sure to be the standard for years to come. That is not to say that Thomas Taylor was not a super-Damion among men. His translation no doubt will remain for years. This due to the fact that Taylor truly understood Theurgy as few other scholars.
So why the need for a new critical translation? Besides the fact that more extant manuscripts were examined than ever before in its preparation, this is a near transparent reading of Iamblichus' intent with clarity and fidelity. Unlike Proclus and many other Platonic fathers, Iamblichus according to Eunapius did not possessed a silver tongue. His writing is at times both tortured and unconventional. Somehow our current team has managed to negotiate many of the traditional Iamblichean hurdles.
The De Mysteriis is a brief examination of noetic or abiding principles of the soul together with proceeding and returning principles. Add to this that based upon the the focused questions from Porphyry, Iamblichus takes on some of the more difficult questions left unanswered by Plotinus. Questions such as the descent of the soul; whether or not the charioteer or One of soul remains undescended. In adddition Iamblichus deals with material sacrifice and its relation to the unmovable Gods, appearances of sound and light and their relation to the quale of beingness, epopteia and the art of Telestai. All these thorny questions and still more Iamblichus tackles in De Mysteriis.
An absolute must for all Scholarch-mystae!

Customer Reviews:
Sober scholarly objective new look at this important document........2006-01-30
Scholarly yet easy to read, detailed yet fascinating, this short book helped me to fathom Iamblichus' difficult text. The author extracts key passages and content to create a description of Iamblichus' pratical ideas about religion and spiritual practice as essentially a consitent form of magic, contrary to attempts to portray him as either a rationalist on the one hand or merely superstitious on the other.
Iamblichus' work from about 300 A.D. is a defense of pagan religious theology and worship against rationalist/materialist attacks. However, it is a hard read for a contemporary person trying to understand his ideas of religious practice. Clarke slices it up and chews it for the modern reader.
One quibble: in the introduction, Clarke seems to have a Christian reference frame and attributes aspects of Iamblichus' ideas she sees as positive to Christian influence, e.g. the emphasis on experience of the divine over philosophy and learning.
I believe this is patently false, that pagan religion had a long history of divine revelatory experience, as in the mystery religions that strongly influenced neo-platonists including Iamblichus. In fact any examinition of history shows Christianity inherits ideas from the ancient mystery religions and the Platonists, and not the other way around. Clarke seems to be writing with the agenda of a Christian polemicist who approves of Iamblichus because he appears to echo some Christian values and so show the influence of Christianity on the pagans.
Nevertheless, this agenda does not intrude on the clarity of the reading of Iamblichus, and Clarke's apparent faith enables her to take seriously Iamblichus' supernatural beliefs in a way a sceptical scholar might find difficult.

Compact, but a pleasure to own; nicely presented.......2002-10-13
Often books written about popular film celebrities are thinly
disguised means of making a buck by publishers
who contract people to write a story about a
subject they so obviously care little about.
But this title is a wonderful appreciation of Chaplin by someone
who appears to at least be a fan.
The small but attractive book is packed with b/w
photos and anecdotes that span Chaplin's entire
career; printed on thick glossy paper and beautifully
designed, it is not the usual slapdash mass market
pulp cheapo that will crumble to dust
in six months. This is a permanent little gem
that will sit very well on the shelf next to a more
text-heavy volume such as Chaplin's autobiography.
There is enough story here though to give anyone
with an interest a basic outline of Charlie's whole life.
Highly recommended.
Invaluable small book on Chaplin.......2002-01-17
David Robinson is an historian and film critic who produced a massive definitive biographical study on Chaplin. A short time afterward Robinson did this small volume for the Abrams Discoveries series, a line known for its smooth paper, compactness, and illustrations.
The book is as excellent an overview of Chaplin's career as anything published. While only 143 pages, it is packed with information. Robinson was given access to the Chaplin archives by Charlie's family for the production of his earlier study, and his wealth of knowledge is on full display here. The book follows Charlie from his very rough childhood and early success in vaudeville through to his rise as a star in the Karno and Keystone comedy groups. Robinson details Chaplin's ethic of hard work and inventiveness, which lead him to eventually take full control of his projects and propel his fame to an international level. The story of the comic genius' life is never far away, and we are given facts about Chaplin's first love, his marriages, the creation of his famous "Little Tramp" character, and his friendships with other actors and directors.
Robinson successfully communicates to the reader Chaplin's inestimable influence on the motion picture. Chaplin is shown to be a perfectionist and artist at a time when films were not considered for anything other than pure entertainment value. Chaplin's unique sensibilities, his creativity, and the combination of comedy and pathos deepened the overall lure and texture of early 20th Century cinema. Along the way we also learn about behind-the-scenes toils undergone by Chaplin during shoots, his participation in forming United Artists, even his pursuit by the F.B.I. and eventual self-exile from the United States.
The information here is communicated in a lively, lucid style, and there are included throughout significant quotations from Chaplin's autobiography as well as some of his other writings to emphasize important points. There is a documents section which adds perspectives on Chaplin and his work by some of his contemporaries and followers, as well as an indispensable filmography, listing Chaplin's work from his first picture, 1914's _Making a Living_, to his final, 1967's _A Countess from Hong Kong._ Despite all these useful features, the book's greatest asset are the illustrations. From full color to black and white, there is a photograph, drawing, or film still on almost every page, bringing to life Chaplin and his era beautifully and respectfully.
I recommend this book highly to Chaplin aficionados new and old, as well as to someone who is curious what the fuss is all about. For those who would like to see the major events of Chaplin's life portrayed onscreen, I recommend the 1990's biopic _Chaplin_ starring Robert Downey Jr.

Da.......2007-01-03
Hugh Leonard, an Irish playwright and journalist, was born in Dublin in 1926. He spent fourteen years working for the Irish Civil Service, before he was able to concentrate fully on his writing. Leonard - known in 'real' life as John Keyes Byrne - received the Tony Award in 1977 for the play "Da", which was largely based on his own youth and his relationship with his adoptive father. (It was also made into a movie, with Martin Sheen playing the Hugh Leonard role). "Home Before Night" tells part of his life story in prose form.
This is a hugely enjoyable book - it's very easily read, though some might say it's a touch sentimental. Parts are told from Leonard's own perspective ("I choked and retched, and the wind knifed through my wet clothes"), though other parts are written about Jack ("Jack's da was too slow to take Sonny's meaning"). It's a bit strange to begin with, but it doesn't interfere with the story at all. In fact, some of my favourite parts involve Jack and his pet dog - also called Jack ! Not surprisingly, it's also a little old-fashioned in places - though it's worth pointing out that certain words and phrases didn't mean then what they mean today. Definitely recommended, as is its follow-up "Out After Dark".
A must read..........2001-10-22
Hugh Leonard writing heals the soul the way a crackling fire warms a body on a winters night. His skill at capturing a life in Dalkey, a place I am so familiar with albeit a more modern one, is unique, setting in place a slice of historical life for generations to come. His settings and story capture a more simple Dublin yet one that we are all familiar with. It breathes life into a lovely town set in a beautiful part of Ireland. This book is my favourite...ever.
Nostalgic and loveable........2000-08-18
This is the tale of a boy growing up in Dalkey in the 1940's and 50's. It is autobiographical and gives an intimate view of Leonard and the influences that effected him in his youth. The book is a collection of cameos of life in a small Irish village just south of Dublin. Dalkey is now part of the greater Dublin Sprawl, but this book captures a time when it was only a village. Leonard regales us with hilarious tales, the dog who attacks priests and policemen, his job interview in a pub where he learns the one great truth in life ( in a pub toilet incoming traffic has right of way). If you know Leonard through his plays (Da and a Life especially) you will have seen some of this material. Even so, the impeccable writing and a real feel for prose makes this book worth a read.
