Book Description
Based on a similarly named meeting in December 1999 organized by the British Society for Plant Pathology, this book considers the biology of interations between host plants and the pathogens that infect them. This important topic has seen some significant advances in the past ten years, especially through the application of molecular techniques which are extensively covered in this book.
Book Description
Lists, alphabetically by state and city, all campgrounds where overnight camping fees of $12 or less are charged. It provides its buyers with an opportunity to save significantly on their travel costs when current overnight camping fees are typically $25 to $50 per night.

not worth the money.......2007-05-11
first of all the old edition we had was the whole country and I do not see why they split the country other than to sell two books instead of one. There are more fee campgrounds than free campgrounds and while i have not taken it out on the road yet there were a few places I looked and it remains the same that the directions are weak and obviously not tested. I had hoped with the dawn of computers and the ease of editing things they would have stepped up and made the book better and more accurate. I would say stop by a AAA and get a camp book b/c most of the campgrounds are fee based
not worth the paper printed on.......2006-10-18
We are traveling the US for almost a year and have purchased the East as well as the West edition before we started. Besides the fact, that we found only a few nice spots described in those books so far, our comments are as follows:
1. The contents of both editions are outdated - certain camgrounds do
simply not exist any more for years!!
2. The directions are awful if not wrong
3. We spent more diesel on finding the described campgrounds than we saved
not to mention the hazzle, driving around in circles
4. Lots of directions seem to be copied from other books we have and are
as wrong as they are in those
5. Campgrounds indicated in the maps by numbers (icons) are not part of
the book anymore
6. The icons in the maps are close to impossible to read (use a
magnifier)
Overall we can absolutely NOT recommend those books to anybody.
Handy to Keep Camping Costs Low.......2006-04-07
Maybe the title should be "Free and Almost Free Campgrounds." I have an earlier edition of this and am glad to see it updated.
It's arranged by state and then by town names. The directions for each campground are pretty detailed.
It gives some details (tbls, toilets, no drkg wtr, no ground fires). Then it tells what natural or historic interest there might be. Some have additional travel tips or fishing tips.

Handy and Helpful.......2007-02-22
A handy guide to those free or very low cost camping and RV sites offering somewhat more pleasant amenities than 'boondocking' in a Walmart parking lot. Used together with a local road map, the guide's maps, descriptions and indexes are clear and helpful for quick on-the-go decision making, and it's FAR less cluttered with ads and other nonsense than the more comprehensive Woodall's guides (though those are also useful).
Anyone could easily plan a lovely RV road trip or vacation using this guide alone, and it's well worth the money. My only real suggestion for improvement to this guide might be to include phone numbers in more of the listings, wherever possible, so that one could more easily call ahead to check for availability. Otherwise, it's damned near perfect as far as I'm concerned.
Title a misnomer - Includes states West of Missisippi as well!.......2005-07-02
This is a great series, but it screwed up my vacation big time when I grabbed the "Western Edition" for a trip to Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri, only to find that these are actually in this, the Eastern Edition, as are Arkansas and Louisiana.
Ideally, I would give this book five stars for the info it contains (heck - ten! It's as good as everyone says it is) but zero stars for the copy editor, publisher, and whoever else that allowed such a basic, major error through.
This book will pay for itself very quickly.......2004-12-12
The maps and information are easy to follow. The only shortfall here are the tiny numbers. The print could have been larger and easier for the co-pilot to read while attempting to make a frugal camping choice for the night.
For the visually challenged it could be a problem.
Great Books!.......2004-06-01
Best books on the planet if you are going camping! I spent 2 1/2 months on the road through 48 states and I would have never been able to do it without them (this one and his western edition). A must have for the low-budget traveler who wants a surefire way to find a campsite when you need one. Excellent directions and although some of the descriptions are a bit misleading, it is very easy to see where they came from. Warning: Some of the campsites are no longer usable! We found a couple that have been flooded or overrun with cows (yes, cows).

Book Description
Acclaimed as the greatest racehorse of all time, and more than half a century after his death his legend continues to grow. Mentioned with the same reverence as Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, and Red Grange. Winner of twenty races in twenty-one starts. His sons and daughters continue to influence the Thoroughbred breed today.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-07-11
This was a good book. But if you want to read a better one on Man O' War then read MAN O' WAR - A LEGEND LIKE LIGHTNING has a lot more info and facts.
Great.......2006-04-30
I really enjoyed this book. It not only told the story of Man O War but also the people that made him a legend. Man O War was voted number one on the Blood Horse top 100 horses of the 20 century. This book is a must read!
Volume 1 of the Eclipse Press's Thoroughbred Legends.......2005-05-19
Edward L. Bowen is an Eclipse Award-winning Turf writer, formerly editor-in-chief of "The Blood-Horse" magazine, and currently president of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. I believe his most recently published book is "Nashua," which is volume eight of the `Thoroughbred Legends' series.
In "Man o'War", Bowen ambles gently through the races, sales histories, and breeding record of 20th century America's greatest Thoroughbred. There are also black-and-white photographs and a chart of all of Big Red's races, where he was first twenty out of twenty-one times.
Of course, the race that Man o'War lost gets the most print. As Bowen puts it, "Few events in sports have been recalled as often as the 1919 Sanford Memorial." Consensus finally blamed the loss on the jockey, John Loftus although a fictional account I read of Man o'War's life had the two-year-old chestnut stumbling to his knees at the start of the Sanford. Bowen has tracked down another theory in the newspapers of the day: Man o'War was sideways at the start and when the barrier was sprung, he had to play catch-up for the rest of the six furlong race.
Upset beat Big Red. We Man o'War fans have to accept that. However, the big chestnut stallion by Fair Play out of Mahubah was still voted the best American race horse of the century by the "Blood-Horse" magazine, and again in another poll conducted by the Associated Press.
I don't think Upset left much of a record behind at stud, although the breeding shed was another arena where Man o'War excelled. Bowen spends some print defending Samuel Riddle's rather eccentric breeding theories. By today's standards Man o'War was not bred very often or to the cream of the mare crop, but his few progeny did exceedingly well. His son War Admiral "was a major link in guaranteeing the ongoing influence of Big Red insofar as successful producing daughters." His son War Relic sired only fourteen stakes winners, but several of his progeny kept the Man o'War sire line alive into the 21st century, mainly through In Reality, and later through the 1990 Kentucky Derby winner, Unbridled.
Bowen is an unhurried, knowledgeable writer and although this book isn't as exciting as some that come later in the series, his retelling of the legend of "The Mostest Hoss" is still worth reading.
GOOD, BUT COULD OF BEEN BETTER........2004-09-19
I REALLY ENJOYED THE BOOK, IT IS WORTH BUYING, BUT IT IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE BOOK MAN O' WAR BY PAGE COOPER AND ROGER TREAT.
WHICH IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ.
Out of the mouths of babes...........2002-12-29
I am adult age and fully agree with the 11 year old reviewer; this book was a huge disapointment! There is too little detail about the horse and no real feeling involved. Man O'War was an all-time marvel; is it too much to ask for some of that story? Was this a designated project with historical reasearch or time limited? I had planned to purchase the entire series, this is the end of that idea.
Book Description
Man o' War didn't run in the Kentucky Derby because owner Sam Riddle thought the distance was too long for 3-year-olds that early in the year. But nearly two decades later, Riddle had a change of heart. In 1937, he agreed to run War Admiral, a son of the great Man o' War, in the Derby. War Admiral swept the Triple Crown and established himself as Man o' War's best son. Author Edward L. Bowen, biographer of Man o' War, chronicles the exploits of his son, including War Admiral's historic battle with the great Seabiscuit.

Great ADDITION to the LIBRARY which includes zones to 9!.......2001-07-23
This book is GREAT once you have your design in mind- when you are looking for the right plants, at the right height, with the right growth pattern in just the right color THAT WILL ACTUALLY GROW where you plan the planting!
It seem most people have the easiest time choosing their specimen plantings but become lost choosing the ground cover that accents their other plantings. Many choose the same old things time and time again. This collection will allow variety and help plan for the finishing touches that accent your special plants.
I would not want to part with this resource.
The pictures of the individual plants are for the most part- close up to show the growth pattern, texture and color of these plants.
This would make a nice gift for someone struggling with an existing landscape of trees and sod! Give the gift of INSPIRATION!

Book Description
Across the centuries and from many lands, women have set forth on journeys of exploration. Visionaries, adventurers, artists, and scientists, these women challenged the limitations, both physical and social, of their times and, in the face of formidable challenges, expanded the world's body of knowledge.
Yet despite their extraordinary achievements, they have remained unknown and unsung for too long.
No longer. The stories of more than eighty extraordinary explorers and adventurers are vividly recounted and stunningly illustrated in
Women of Discovery. Here for the first time are gathered the tales of early voyagers, such as the valiant tenth-century Viking adventurer Unn the Deep Minded and seventeenth-century Spanish conquistadora Catalina de Erauso. Intrepid explorers like Mary Kingsley in Africa, Alexandra David-Neel in Tibet, and Freya Stark in the Middle East traveled fearlessly into the blank spaces on the map. Artist explorers, including the great botanical painter Anna Maria Sibylla Merian in Surinam, writer Zora Neale Hurston in Haiti, and photographer Ruth Robertson in South America, captured in their art the beauty and mystery of exotic lands. Many brave women have ventured into extreme environments to bring back knowledge, whether they were aviators like Amelia Earhart, mountaineers like Annie Smith Peck, or Arctic explorers like Irina and Valentina Kuznetsova. And the annals of science would be far poorer without the work of such women as primatologists Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, ethnobotanist Nicole Maxwell, and ichthyologist Eugenie Clark.
This is truly a gathering of heroines, full of tales of courage, talent, intelligence, and sheer determination. With a foreword by renowned journalist Christiane Amanpour,
Women of Discovery is a remarkable book, an achievement in its own right, and certain to thrill anyone captivated by the world-changing drama of exploration.
Customer Reviews:
Carole Herdegen editor of TravelSITE.com. .......2005-03-08
You can read more of Carole Herdegen's book reviews at http://www.travelsite.com/carole/reviews.htm
I have been waiting for a book like this to come along for a very long time. Milbry Polk and Mary Tiegreen's Women of Discovery is truly a celebration of intrepid women down through the ages. Women who conquered fear, resentment, discrimination, finance or lack of education in face of the then prevailing conditions that intimidated and inhibited them from having an unobstructed opportunity to pursue their dreams. Some of these women faced incredible challenges and most of them contributed substantially to our knowledge of the world. . The authors of this book have given us a chance to read about 82 brave but very different women beginning with the early Christian pilgrims in the Middle Ages. Women such as Elizabeth Van Der Woude, Catalina de Erauso, Jeanne Baret and Isabel Grandmaison y Bruno Godin who received no mention during the age of discovery in the 15th to the 18th centuries while their male counterparts, Cortez, Magellan and deGama received fame and glory. The book brings us to the present with the achievement of Louise Hose, an American geologist who, because of her passion for discovery, lead her into the dark, unexplored caves of Mexico and the finding of new life forms.
The book also obviously identifies familiar names like Amelia Mary Earhart, Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Mary Leakey, and Margaret Mead. The written biographies range from 500 to 1500 words and almost virtually "come to life" by the authors' use of photography, cartography, watercolors, and drawings.
After reading this book, one could never forget the story of Sue Henderson, the fossil hunter and explorer, who from a very young age chose the pursuit of outdoor nature. At seventeen, she dropped out of school and made a living by finding incredible things underwater. Many pieces of her amber collection reside in the American Museum of Natural History. She is best remembered as a woman who discovered the fossilized Tyrannosaurus Rex in The Badlands of South Dakota in 1990. Appropriately named "Sue" by her colleagues, this 67 million year old creature is one of the world's best examples of dinosaurs and earned $8.36 million at auction.
Another chapter is devoted to Stephanie Schwabe, a geomicrobiologist who, after losing her world-renowned scientist husband in a diving accident, continued his work of discovery in underwater caves formed some ten million years ago. She wrote that "the human race has forgotten what is valuable in life. That true wealth is not money and material things, but the health of your environment and the understanding of it." In her continuing exploration of underwater caves called Blue Holes or the much deeper Black Holes of the world's oceans, Ms Schwabe is credited as discovering totally new species of bacteria.
This book is the perfect gift for every young woman. It is certainly a well- researched tutorial about the brave women who have paved the way for today's modern woman to pursue and achieve her dreams. .
As an admirer of Christiane Amanpour, a CNN broadcast journalist, I can think of no other woman more qualified to be called upon to provide the foreword to this most remarkable and inspiring book.
FINALLY A BOOK ABOUT WOMEN.......2003-09-09
It was so good because I learnt a lot about women lifes and so on. Sorry for my reasons, but its so hard to explain. Thank you.
Great for young girls.......2002-10-04
This is a terrific book and should be given to all girls over the age of 10. My life could have been different if I'd known there were so many wonderful women over the centuries pushing the limits in a multitude of authentic ways. This book is inspiring, motivating and a tear jerker all at the same time.
Much needed subject finally in print.......2001-12-01
I've looked for years for a basic book about women explorers and women who have been adventurous through the ages. Finally here is something that is beautiful, readable, and a great introduction to a group that has been overlooked by most historians. A must read especially for young women/teens who are influenced by the social and cultural values still pushed upon them in society. Great illustrations, photos and layout as well.

A Brilliant Memoir.......2006-07-27
A friend of mine from the Bronx told me about this book, and I'm glad she did. This if a beautifully written story that gets at the truth of both the time and the heart. The Bronx is a place that seems mythic and all too real to me and this writer keeps both of those images alive.
We are all dreamers.......2003-07-24
I loved this book. It gave a shape to Pearson's life and let me understand that there is a shape to all of our lives. It's just up to us to find the meaning that is there for us notice.
A Memoir that Reads like a Novel.......2003-01-25
For me Dreaming of Columbus read more like a novel than a memoir. I mean that as a compliment to the writer. The story had the feel of fiction to it, as if you could see inside the characters lives and enter the story for a while. I loved it.
Rambling Reminisces about a Childhood in the Bronx.......2002-12-30
Michael Pearson has the right idea, but the ideas that are gathered into the book are a little disjointed and fractured. If he could smooth out the stories so that blend one into the other, the entire book would read better.
On the positive note, Dreaming of Columbus would definitely stir memories of the neighborhood for those growing up in that part of New York. He does have some descriptive stories of people, places and landmarks in the book that are entertainingly delightful.
If you are a Bronx native, I would recommend this book so you can remember things you may never see again.
Familiar Themes in Dreaming of Columbus.......2002-06-17
Despite the images of sea voyages inspired by its title, Dreaming of Columbus is not the story of a young man spending his salad days in exotic, foreign settings. Instead, Michael Pearson takes the road less traveled and keeps his story closer to home. The reader looking for journeys will not be disappointed, however, in the imaginative way the Pearson uses literature to break away from the confines of the Bronx and the unpredictable, bourbon induced, violent outbursts produce by his father's rage to live. Although Pearson engages in excessive epigraph dropping, the means by which literature provides an avenue for escape adds a universal element to his narrative from which we call all learn something about the art of bridge building.
